CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — To prepare for this commentary, I reflected on my first year in command — all the good and bad. As I did this, one thing stood out in each scenario; I did nothing alone. For each situation and every decision, I had the 4th SOPS leadership team with me. The wise advice and different perspectives ensured I made decisions that were not about me, but what was best for the Airmen and the squadron.

One thing is for sure, any success my team had was because we did it together. Just like in baseball, any teammate could have the chance to hit or catch the ball. However, one action alone will not lead the team to a win, it takes the whole team to accomplish that, much like our actions in a squadron. If one teammate is hitting “home runs,” but the rest of the team is in a hitting slump, that is not the formula for success.

Successful teams support and lift each other up. This can be accomplished through encouragement, coaching and de-

This isn’t only demonstrated in a squadron when bad things happen, but also when we correct and take the time to teach our teammates how to do and be better.

“Lead well, lead fast and make history.”

Schriever chaplains offer counseling, aid

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Schriever Air Force Base Chapel Corps provides spiritual and emotional support to Airmen stationed here to keep morale high and the mission advancing year-round.

The corps is a team of five Airmen who are dedicated to providing counsel to those in need. They are trained in providing spiritual and crisis counseling to support Airmen’s mental and spiritual health.

“The chaplain corps’ mission is to care for others,” said Staff Sgt. Lathaniel Leigh, Schriever Chapel Corps religious affairs Airman. “We’re here for spiritual care, religious support and the overall well-being of our Airmen.”

Although the office is only open during the duty day, the Airmen who work in the shop are available 24/7, 365,

to counsel and help Airmen in need.

“We’re here to encourage Airmen,” said Capt. Ronald Lawrence, Peterson-Schriever Garrison chaplain. “We’re not defined by the work we do, we want to make sure Airmen know their identity. When you know your identity and know your why, it can really make a big impact on yourself and the people around you.”

The chaplain corps is the only agency in the Air Force to offer 100% confidentiality, which means they do not share anything an Airmen tells them with anyone.

“Airmen don’t have to be religious to talk to chaplains,” Leigh said. “I think that holds a lot of people back, [but] Airmen can talk

to us about life questions, relationship problems and confusion at work. The chaplains may not always be the best suited to help with your problems, but they can help guide you in the right direction.”

Seeing a chaplain is completely voluntary, no one can be forced to see a chaplain.

“We’re here to be agents of hope,” Lawrence said. “We want to restore any hope an Airman may have lost.”

The chaplain corps offers a variety of resources and activities for Airmen to enjoy, including the chapel resource room is located in Bldg. 300, Room 146.

Sacred Space is a short series of videos where chaplains aim to inspire Airmen and let them know the chaplains are thinking of them and are available.

“Our office is embedded with the people,” Leigh said. “We want people to be familiar with who we are and comfortable coming to us. Our main mission is the people.”

Schriever’s medical clinic begins “new normal” operations The Clinic’s Schedule:

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Medical Squadron’s medical clinic located at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, is performing new measures to mitigate risk for Airmen coming in for appointments.

As part of the new procedures, Airmen must wear a mask, answer screening questions at the front door and get a temperature check prior to entering the building. The clinic has also staggered appointment times based on patient symptoms and categories of illness.

“The new normal consists of the clinic being divided into separate times when we see patients based upon their presentation,” said Capt. Megan Maxwell, 21st MDS Medical Operations Flight commander. “This is to protect both patients and staff members from cross-contaminating shared waiting areas.”

• The Well Clinic is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. During this time, primary care managers see healthy patients for routine care. Examples of routine appointments are physicals and musculoskeletal related issues.

• Walk-in services are available from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Examples of walk-in services: HIV testing, pregnancy testing, immunizations, suture and staple removal. Urinary tract infection testing is available as a walk-in from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

• The Sick Clinic is open from noon to 4:30 p.m. During this time, PCMs see patients for acute face-to-face care.

The clinic may call the patient prior to the appointment depending on the reason for the appointment to complete additional screening.

Additionally, the clinic offers appointments over the phone

and virtually through video via GoogleDuo. Examples of these types of appointments are COVID-19 questions, lab results follow-up, referral requests and profiles. If a member is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, they should call the appointment line as soon as possible. Symptoms include: Fever and chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing and fatigue.

“Patients need to call the appointment line in order to be appropriately screened and to determine if COVID-19 testing is required,” Maxwell said. “If testing is required, patients will be booked into an appointment at Peterson Air Force Base. To protect patients and staff members, please do not come to the Schriever Clinic without a scheduled appointment.”

The clinic’s over-the-counter medicine program has been suspended until further notice. The Pharmacy and Radiology hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Thule Air Base coordinates ship rescue, saves 6 “[It was] like a washing machine,” Jensen said.

At first, “Rising Star” provided pumps and generators to pump water from the ship more quickly. But half an hour into pumping, the commercial ship’s main engine died, leaving its crew without power or navigation capabilities. At that point, it became necessary to tow the boat back to Thule.

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Contractors stationed at Thule Air Base, Greenland, responded to a distress call from a commercial ship Aug. 3, 2020, saving all six members of its crew before towing the ship to port at Thule for repairs.

Around noon local time, a Royal Danish Air Force plane that had taken off from Thule picked up the distress call approximately 50 kilometers south and relayed it back to base. The ship’s crew reported the vessel had a leak and was taking on water faster than the onboard pumps could remove it.

Col. David Hanson, Thule AB installation commander, greenlit contractors from Vectrus Services to take Thule’s tugboat, “Rising Star,” to provide support for the ship and its crew.

“The rapid efforts and teamwork of the 821st Air Base Group, Vectrus Services, the Royal Danish Air Force, Joint Arctic Command and the Joint Rescue Coordination Center were instrumental in saving lives,” Hanson said. “This was an absolute international team effort.”

The ship, a 75-foot commercial tour boat, was carrying Greenland nationals who were offering carpentry services to remote villages along Greenland’s coast.

The night prior, the crew noticed a leak in the engine room, said Casper Jensen, Vectrus Services’ civilian operations manager at Thule. Onboard pumps were unable

to remove water faster than it was coming in, so the crew sent out a distress signal, not knowing if anyone would be able to respond.

“Greenland is a big area, and the waters around Greenland are even bigger,” Hanson said. “If that aircraft wouldn't have been flying overhead, who knows who

would have received that distress call?”

Through that RDAF aircraft, the crew of the “Rising Star,” the Air Force’s only tugboat, were in touch with the in-distress crew until they arrived at about 2 p.m. The weather was rough, with Jensen reporting two-meter waves as the tugboat crew positioned themselves alongside the ship.

“[We had to sail at] slow speed for the first three hours because of the rough seas, until we got inside the bay,” Jensen said.

By the time the “Rising Star” and the commercial ship were safely at Thule, it was 9 p.m. Vectrus Services’ contractors have provided fuel and electrician support to get the ship back into good repair.

In addition to the vital missile warning, space situational awareness and satellite command and control missions supported at Thule AB, the 821st ABG there also offers emergency medical care to area Greenlanders through a partnership agreement with the Danish government. Thule AB is located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle where it provides an important view of the northern hemisphere in order to maintain the safe and responsible use of space.

Chaplain Hughes enjoys one last laugh

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Capt. Lauren Hughes, Schriever chaplain, capped her time at Schriever Air Force Base with jokes, July 30, 2020 during her farewell at the Schriever Event Center.

During her more than two and a half years at Schriever, Hughes stopped by offices and told jokes to build rapport and morale.

“Why couldn’t the pony sing a lullaby?”

Hughes asked an audience of 30 Airmen.

“Because he was a little horse [hoarse].”

Some Airmen chuckled, a few jokingly groaned, and all in attendance grinned as Hughes cracked her signature smile following the jest.

Hughes created several events to support Schriever members including ‘A Night of Purposeful Painting’, a painting tutorial hosted on Zoom, organized ‘Walk with Purpose,’ a prayer walk to create spiritual growth and resilience, and a family retreat for Airmen.

Hughes sought to evoke the best qualities in everyone she met and led with her actions rather than words.

“This being my first assignment as a religious affairs Airman, I had no idea, expectations or guidelines,” said Staff Sgt. Lathaniel Leigh, Schriever Chapel Corps religious affairs Airman. “Chaplain Hughes immediately accepted me and took me under her wing. Not only is she a phenomenal chaplain, but she’s a phenomenal leader.”

Hughes learned how to become a leader from her predecessor, Capt. Portmann Werner, who helped Hughes plant seeds that blossomed throughout her time here.

During Hughes’ first week, Werner introduced her to leadership, secretaries and commanders and helped her get to know with Airmen.

“We went to a community event called Geek Lunch,” Hughes said. “We played

old-school video games, board games and that was my first time interacting with the Airmen. That was a huge learning curve because I didn’t play video games and hadn’t heard of some of the board games. But I got into the mix and allowed [Airmen] to show me how to play the games.”

Airmen also recommended movies for Hughes to watch which started with a slew of superhero movies, which Hughes obliged and carved out time in her schedule to view.

“At that time, the only movie I had watched was ‘Black Panther,’” Hughes said. “But when I heard them talking about (Avengers) Infinity War, I asked the Airmen

if I needed to watch all of these movies to understand. They said, not really and gave me a list, and guess what I did? I binged watched those [Marvel] movies. I didn’t watch all the movies when everyone else watched them, but a few weeks after I watched them all, I had a conversational piece to relate to with them.”

Airmen and leadership noticed her dedication to assist Airmen and the relationships she established during her early months began to grow — most notably during a quarterly awards ceremony. Hughes didn’t remember the exact title of the award, but she did recall the reactions of her Wingmen.

“When I heard my name, someone had to tap me because I was in shock,” Hughes said.

“But that’s not why I felt like I succeeded [as a chaplain]. I felt like I succeeded because people were saying, ‘that’s my chaplain.’

Then someone said, ‘No, that’s our chaplain, that’s ‘The People’s Chaplain.’ And I think at that moment, I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, people know that I care.’”

To display that affection, Airmen presented Hughes with a makeshift World Wrestling Entertainment title during her farewell that read, “The People’s Chaplain, Ch. Capt. Hughes Mar. 2018-Aug. 2020.”

Leigh, who worked with Hughes for nine months, also noticed the bond Airmen shared with Hughes.

“She is so well known and trusted that because she brought me in, I was equally accepted in the units,” Leigh said. “If Chaplain Hughes is bringing me around I must be OK. To be able to work with her — the time has been too short — but we’ve become closer and there is so much love shown and shared in our relationship.”

Hughes heaped praise on her chaplain team, not only for their work to lift spirits, but to keep her balanced. Hughes said she experienced personal losses while at Schriever and because of the energy exuded by her team, many people did not know about her turmoil.

She hopes everyone — from young Airmen to leadership — continues to pay it forward.

“Please take the initiative to ask: ‘How are you?’ ‘Would you like to have lunch with me today?’ ‘I’ve never seen you before; how long have you been stationed at Schriever?’” she said. “It seems to take a lot of energy, but those questions could potentially lead to lifelong friendships. So please take care of each other, please be uniquely you. Allow that uniqueness to add value to the United States Space Force. Thank you for allowing me to serve you for these years.”

The 50th CPTS’s mission was to provide timely and accurate financial decision support and customer service to team Schriever. The former squadron was absorbed into a larger 21st CPTS as part of the U.S. Space Force reorganization.

“We’re changing the squadron name, but we’re not changing the outstanding work that you do or the benefits or contributions you will have to our mission,” said Col. James Smith, Peterson-Schriever Garrison commander, addressing the squadron’s Airmen in attendance at the ceremony. “I have faith you will continue to exceed all expectations, you will continue to take care of all of our personnel, including both Space Force and Air Force members.”

The unit’s history dates back to Hahn Air Base, Germany, where it was stood up as one of eight in the Air Force in 1983.

The unit deactivated in 1991, only to be reactivated as comptroller flight in 2003, and then back into a squadron after the Pentagon deemed it critical in 2004.

In its recent history, the squadron won

two Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, one in 2009 and one in 2016. Smith said they’ve managed a $154.5 million average budget while simultaneously assisting 22 Schriever base partners. Additionally the 50th CPTS oversaw the stand-up of the Defensive Cyber Operations budget for the entire space enterprise.

“CPTS is a crucial function for our bases,” said Smith. “You all do amazing work — not only ensuring our mission is fueled through dollars — but that all of our people are correctly in-processed, compensated and accrue their much deserved leave. As a side note, your expertise also keeps me, as a commander, out of trouble.”

The 50th CPTS was at one point the smallest CPTS in the Air Force with only 23 members at its smallest, despite serving a base population of more than 7,000 Airmen.

“From paved to lined roads, functioning elevators, food options, renovated work areas, portal phone storage, acquisition of augmented reality and much more — Schriever is looking good and the mission is advancing at unprecedented rates,” said Maj. Justin Gabbard 21st CPTS commander. “This team is truly phenomenal.”

Although the squadron stood down, its legacy will live on at Schriever through the Airmen who have served in the squadron and the Airmen they have helped.

“Many teams have carried the guidon over the years,” Gabbard said. “We can furl this flag and know we have done our part to ensure the mission sets and Airmen that comprised the 50th had unrivaled support and we did our predecessors proud.”
