SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Twenty-one was the lucky number as the 50th Operations Support Squadron defeated the 1st Space Operations Squadron 21-1 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Aug. 21.

Korey Kuykendall, coach and pitcher for the 50th OSS, gave his team a pep talk before the game, making it known his goal as

a coach was for the team to concentrate and focus on getting and keeping up the intensity.

1st SOPS was the only team to beat the 50th OSS during the regular season, so it was Kuykendall’s goal to defeat them in the championship game after beating them in the second round of playoffs.

“I wanted to keep that same intensity up and wanted to show 1st SOPS that OSS is the best,” he laughed. “It’s one thing to go out

there and play for fun, but it’s another thing to go out there and win. I wanted to win and playing with these guys they had the same mentality, so it was fun.”

Kuykendall’s last words before the championship game started were, “Let’s start hot, stay hot and finish hot.”

21st Space Operations Squadron commander

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As the commander of a premier space operations squadron with detachments located around the globe (Diego CSMNG Garcia, Guam, Hawaii, Kwajalein Atoll and California) I’m often asked what my most challenging leadership issues are when dealing with dispersed units and how I resolve them. My answer is always the same: communication.

Whether you work with six people or 600 people, in one office or five spread around the globe, every leader will certainly face one challenge: communicating effectively.

As the leader of geographically separated units, I must constantly work towards maintaining communication efforts where all members feel aligned with the unit mission.

Through my experience with managing remote personnel in different time zones and even different international dates, I’ve learned that certain communication challenges will definitely arise but the last thing anyone wants is for geographically separated members to feel out of touch or misaligned with the mission.

Even worse, we don’t want members to begin to feel like outsiders in their own squadron, group or wing. Communication, especially inclusive communication, is similar to most other organizational efforts; it involves cooperation, open lines of support, established guidance and standardized rules.

Communications is much more than just a commander speaking to Airmen.

A large majority of my communication with our detachment commanders occurs via telecom. While I may think I’m providing the greatest guidance in the finest language ever spoken, my commanders may have tuned me out and only hear me repeat “I am Groot” or “Hodor, Hodor” over and over again until they can finally speak those famous four telecom words: “Copy all, no questions.”

To mitigate this problem, leaders must avoid one-way communication and instead invest in a more participative style. This leads to members, even while geographically separated from the unit, becoming more engaged and more involved. Our personnel at remote sites, similar to personnel at home bases, feel they are more value-added to the mission by actively participating in established meetings and regularly speaking with unit leadership.

An effective communication step I have taken is to establish an open forum between myself and the detachment commanders where we share information, experiences, advice and ask tough questions. The road See Communicate page 7

Softball From page 1 game, Kuykendall ensured his team stayed hot and was appreciative of the support the team gave him.

“I’ve only walked two other players throughout the entire season, so it was really great to see the team rally,” he said. “Everybody had a hit and run. It was a total team effort.”

C.J. Thornton, recreation assistant with 50th Force Support Squadron, said the softball season as a whole was a success.

“With every sports season, we have new people meshing with the veteran players and it brings a new level of passion and sportsmanship to the sports,” he said.

Although the fitness center has seen a slight decline in players, Thornton said for the teams that did sign up, they had great player participation.

“A few teams even had fans at every game to cheer on their squadron,” he added.

Thornton began each game day at 7 a.m., driving to the softball shed to get the essentials to prep the field.

“It takes anywhere from one to two hours from start to finish to get the field game ready,” he added.

Kuykendall praised the fitness center staff for their hard work in organizing and executing the various intramural sports for the base.

“The fitness center makes all of this possible,” he said. “We couldn’t play without them.”

Thornton said both teams showed up early to the championship game, warmed up and were ready to go well before the game started.

“Each championship game has different levels of excitement, nerves and butterflies and this was no different,” he said. “For some people, this was their third or fourth championship game in a row, and with that comes a new level of nerves. Championship teams don’t want to break their streak.”

Before the first pitch, Thornton had to prepare the schedule, contact all the coaches about any issues they may have and prep the field with clay and dirt.

“I couldn’t have done the field without the help of the dirt boys from the 50th CES,” he said.

Even in preparation for sporting events, the 50th Space Wing vision, “One team … mastering space and cyberspace operations … now and into the future,” rings true.

With the help of base agencies and Airmen, intramural sports are made possible.

“What keeps my passion alive with sports is the camaraderie that I see build throughout the season,” Thornton said. “Sports will always bring out the best in people, for example sportsmanship, passion, aggression and abilities they didn’t know they had.”

Kuykendall agreed, saying he enjoyed seeing the camaraderie between squadrons.

“The 50th OSS is the instructor flight for the various SOPS, so the students get to see what they’re going into and the squadrons get to see what they’re getting. They’re able to build rapport and camaraderie, and we get to see people we don’t see face-to-face.”

Thornton said his favorite part about the job is sharing his love of sports with the base.

“Getting to meet new people that have the same passion I have for sports will never get old,” he said.

New environmental chief shares story, vision

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Lane Meidinger knew landlocked Colorado was going to be a stark difference from working on a small fishing boat off the turbulent Bering Sea as a marine observer, but she accepted the challenge.

“I love being a leader and making a difference,” Meidinger said. “I’m always looking to broaden my horizons.”

She now serves as Schriever’s new chief of the Environmental Management Element with the 50th Civil Engineer Squadron.

Ever since she was a child, Meidinger loved nature.

Growing up in southern Alabama, she and her friends would spend their free time exploring the state’s wooded forests and observing its inhabitants.

“That’s how we entertained ourselves,” she said.

“Trekking through the woods, camping, canoeing and fishing. All that good stuff. I’ve always been very in tuned with nature.”

This passion would carry on into her adulthood.

Earning her Masters of Environmental Management, Meidinger sought to take her work to the frontlines, soon finding herself on a boat with three other fishermen, navigating the coast of Alaska.

While her work was vital in ensuring fishing regulations were met, she said it did not come without its challenges.

“It was an adventure,” she said. “You had to think outside the box while living out in the Bering Sea for weeks at a time. Somedays, I had to tie myself up to the mast in the middle of the boat because the seas were so rough, I could be thrown overboard studying fish.

“The whole experience was eye opening,” she continued.

“It helped make me the independent person I am today.”

Far from the sea at Schriever AFB, Meidinger said she has developed plans for the element in her new leadership role. While she has only served in this role for a few months, she has already expressed her vision for the element’s development on base, including expanding community outreach, archaeological research and renewed site surveys.

and will positively impact the base as well,” she said. “We are looking forward to ramping up these programs, and we are developing a great team.”

Meidinger shared her vision: to uphold a commitment to the environment where integrity leads, honesty is effortless, reliability is constant and positivity always ensues.

“I’ve always held onto this vision regardless of what job I have,” she said. “Integrity, honesty, reliability and positivity, they all go hand-in-hand, but each projects a different ideal. Each makes our mission more effective.”

Schriever AFB’s diverse ecosystem, which features prairie dogs, antelope, burrowing owls and rattlesnakes as well as various types of flowers and cacti, presents a new opportunity for Meidinger to expand her nature knowledge.

Added to this are new considerations such as wildland management in case of fires, and local community outreach to tribes in the area.

“I love the mountains and prairies, it’s a different type of natural environment with a different set of challenges,” she said. “It’s definitely a learning experience.”

Meidinger’s coworkers expressed confidence she would be able to make the program prosper and fulfill her vision.

“We work with her on a regular basis, and she has displayed great work ethic,” said Zakary Payne, engineering flight chief with the 50th CES, who coordinates with Meidinger and the element on many large scale projects.

“She has a lot of environmental experience and has proven to be an immediate benefit for the squadron.”

Meidinger highlighted her excitement to implement her core values and help Schriever AFB’s environment continue to thrive.

“It’s pretty awesome to be chief of the environmental element here,” she said. “It was my ultimate goal, and it’s a great opportunity. Through integrity, honesty, reliability and positivity, I can ensure our mission runs smoothly, and the element can really step up and go above and beyond.”

Payne shared this optimism for the future.

“She brings a great attitude to the position,” he said.

“Her personality and passion for the job will take the element far.”

AFTAC helps break the ‘STEM mold’

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — In 1976, esteemed historian and author Laurel Thatcher Ulrich wrote a book entitled, “Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History.”

The premise of her work was to shine a light on famous women throughout history who challenged the way things were done.

While the title may seem to be a modernday rallying cry for women to go out and break the rules through misbehavior, that was not the premise of her message. Ulrich’s emphasis was to encourage women to do more — to break with convention, make a mark on history and prove that ordinary people, including women, can have a lasting impact on the world by doing the unexpected.

Today, women from all walks of life are taking Ulrich’s words to heart and finding ways to break those proverbial molds as they seek out careers in positions traditionally held by men.

Women make up half the current U.S. workforce, but only 26 percent of them are in STEM — science, technology, engineering and math career fields. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 61 percent of women in STEM are in the social sciences (communication, education, public health, etc.), and only 13 percent are in a hard science field such as engineering.

Communicate From page 3 to mission success is paved with complex problems, complications and difficulties but effective leaders don’t encourage their Airmen to work through problems alone.

Instead, leaders should urge Airmen to use these issues as an opportunity to open the lines of communication. In our sessions, I actively listen as the detachment commanders elaborate on their current situations and concerns and pay attention as each share’ possible solutions and courses of actions.

These items range from onsite personnel actions and operational concerns to personal relationships and career opportunities. When asked for my views or leadership advice on a topic, I go back to a tour guide versus travel agent comparison that was introduced to me a few years ago.

Basically, this comparison asserts leadership isn’t about assuming the role of a travel agent and directing people to go places, try things and participate in activities you may have never attempted. Instead, if one has the experience, he should strive to be a guide and lead Airmen with personal knowledge which highlight the pros and cons of past deci-

sions and discuss the outcome of tackling issues a certain way. I also use my time to remind the commanders while small issues can become a thorn in their side, they must always focus on the mission.

A successful leader always keeps an eye on the big picture, running every item through a filter of how it will help achieve or otherwise affect the mission.

It’s very easy to get caught up in the small things that come up each day but it’s more important for everyone to address issues and move on.

Leaders must focus their efforts on solving the 20 percent of issues that cause 80 percent of the problems. The rest can be resolved after the mission impacting

issues. Our forum assures the commanders I am aware of their issues, provides a way forward for us all and leaves us feeling a little closer although we are thousands of miles away.

In truth, effectively communicating with global units is tough but not impossible. A commander’s ability to develop and maintain inclusive global communications with geographically separated units that goes beyond routine correspondence and tasker monitoring depends heavily on personal interactions and connections.

This relationship may very well determine whether a leader, regardless of time or distance, can take their organization from effective to excellent.

From an Air Force perspective, 64,367 of the nearly 321,000 Airmen currently on active duty are women. Of that 20 percent, even fewer are in STEM-related fields. Air Force leadership is trying to break that cycle.

In a live session with The Washington Post’s David Ignatius last month, Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson discussed new Air Force initiatives aimed at inspiring more women to enter scientific career fields. During the interview, Wilson elaborated on steps the service is taking to recruit more women.

“One of the things we’re trying to do is to encourage more young women to go to engineering school,” said Wilson.

“Sometimes the way in which we talk about engineering is not resonating with our daughters, and it is with our sons. We found that if you look at teenagers, more boys are satisfied by solving the problem.

They get satisfaction out of fixing something. A disproportionate number of girls want to know why the problem matters.

So, if we say, ‘Come be an engineer and you can do cool stuff,’ we’re talking to the

boys. If you say, ‘If you want to make a difference in someone’s life; if you want to have clean water or save the life of a family member you love, or make the environment cleaner, or provide energy to the world, be an engineer.’ Then we’re talking to both boys and girls.”

One Air Force entity has made great strides on making Wilson’s STEM goals a reality. The Air Force Technical Applications Center, headquartered at Patrick AFB, Florida, is a highly-technical organization made up of scientists, technicians, engineers and analysts whose role is to detect, identify, analyze and report nuclear detonations underground, in the atmosphere, underwater or in space. It is the sole organization in the Defense Department charged with this vital international mission. Despite its vital role to national decision makers, AFTAC’s pool of employees skews heavily male. Of its more than 1,000 members who make up the center’s workforce, only 160 are military or civilian women. Even fewer are in STEM positions.

One of the ways AFTAC is looking to increase the number of female employees in technically-skilled roles is hosting its annual Women in Science and Engineering Symposium. For the past four years, AFTAC has invited the best speakers from various industries — academia,

defense, corporate and commercial — to share best practices on how to recruit, engage, employ and encourage women into hard science career paths.

Rose Day, AFTAC’s chief of civilian recruiting, believes the best way to “break the mold” is to expose girls at an early age to the sciences.

“One of the messages I like to relay to students when we travel for recruiting efforts is very simple: I tell the girls, ‘You are needed.’ Everyone wants to hear those words because it makes them feel like they are a valuable, needed contributor,” Day explained. “We have to be advocates, we have to set the example and we have to collaborate. But we can’t do this alone. We also have to partner with the men in the room because their advocacy is a critical part to the partnership. That’s how we break the mold.”

Parveen Kapoor, the Atmosphere and Space Operations Flight chief, 23rd Analysis Squadron, also believes talent in STEM fields must be groomed early in the school system.

“Recently, there has been a major emphasis placed in this area for young girls, and while I’m completely on board with that, I believe there needs to be encouragement across the board for both boys and girls in STEM,” Kapoor said.

Math and science have always been a passion of hers, and she applies her knowledge in her everyday responsibilities at AFTAC. As the center’s satellite technique alert officer, she is a qualified national expert in analyzing and reporting global nuclear detonations to national decision makers in accordance with ratified nuclear treaties. She is also responsible for monitoring state-of-the-art health and configuration control of more than 200 sensors on 38 orbiting space vehicles.

“This means I’m not only concerned with ensuring and optimizing current sensor performance; I also advise the treaty monitoring community of future constellations and make recommendations for sensors that will be used well after I retire from the Air Force,” Groth said. “Any career field may seem like a challenge, but the secret is to embrace and learn from the differences. STEM has so many different kinds of people, including really smart women, but the one thing that we all have in common is our passion for science.”

Managing resources key to successful UEI

— With the third quarter in full swing, the time before the 50th Space Wing’s Unit Effectiveness Inspection in February is growing shorter.

As “game day” approaches, the 50th SW Inspector General office reminds units of the major graded areas: managing resources, improving the unit, leading people and executing the mission.

“Essentially, we’ve given people the questions that are going to be on the test in the form of the Commander’s Inspection Handbook,” said Capt. Joseph Villalpando, exercise program manager for the 50th SW IG. “The exact same questions inspectors will be asking are in that handbook.”

While all the MGAs are equally important throughout the year, the inspectors are emphasizing the importance of managing resources during the third quarter.

Managing resources is broken down into two sub-MGAs: adequacy and stewardship.

Adequacy

Within adequacy, inspectors look to see if units have the right amount of manpower, funds, equipment, facilities and guidance to fulfill their mission.

“Adequacy is all about asking the question, ‘what do we have and do we have enough of it,’” Villalpando said. “If you take away any one component of the adequacy or don’t have enough of it, it can be hard to impossible to accomplish your mission.”

Tech. Sgt. Martin Howard, exercises section chief for the 50th SW IG, said manpower is a key concern for many units.

“We see it everywhere we go,” Howard said. “We’re the best in the business at doing more with less, but sometimes there just isn’t enough to be able to properly get things done.

When that happens, it’s important units and commanders have honest, open dialogue as to what has to be done and what has to give, because the mission can’t not get done.”

According to Villalpando, honesty is key when evaluating adequacy.

“Most of the time, getting new or more resources for a unit is something a commander has to ask for and isn’t always guaranteed to get,” he said. “So, as units self-evaluate with the CCIP handbook, they need to be honest, because sometimes the combined voice of a commander and the IG can be advantageous in prioritization and allocation of resources for units.”

Stewardship

“The two sub-MGAs complement each other perhaps more so than any other group within the MGAs,” Villalpando said. “Each has all the same components: manpower, funds, equipment, etc.”

Villalpando said stewardship starts at the most basic level and is every Airman’s responsibility.

“It starts with the little things like keeping your desk and area clean,” he said. “That may seem small, but it’s important that mindset be woven into everything that you do, because the details matter. Chances are if you’re taking care of your workspace in a clean, responsible manner, you’re probably taking care of major Air Force assets the same way.”

According to Howard, taking care of Air Force assets is important for two reasons.

“One, things break if you don’t take care of them,” he said. “Two, if you’re asking for more resources but aren’t taking care of what you have, you’re probably not going to get them.”

Howard also said stewardship is a category where people sometimes miss the mark in a well-intentioned way.

“It’s about using the right resources for the right job,” he said. “That’s where we can help with an outside perspective for units

who think they may not have enough of something. We can help units develop best practices to optimize the resources they have and potentially eliminate a need they think they have.”

While the questions inspectors ask within adequacy and stewardship nearly mirror each other, one key difference is the category of “Airmen’s Time” in stewardship.

“The question we ask is, ‘are the unit’s leaders good stewards of Airmen’s time,’” Villalpando said. “However, while senior leaders are accountable, this is every single Airman’s basic responsibility. What do you do with your time every day?”

Howard said time management is critical as the wing’s “Super Bowl” approaches in February.

“We’ve known this inspection is coming for a long time now, so if you’re waiting until now to start preparing, your execution on game day is going to reflect that,” Howard said. “We are one big family in this wing, so if we’re failing to prepare, we’re hurting our mission and our people. Everyone needs to be ready for game day.”

Brazil, USSTRATCOM share SSA, data

By U.S. Strategic Command OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. — U.S. Strategic Command signed an agreement with the Brazilian Ministry of Defense to share Space Situational Awareness services and information.

Rear Adm. Richard A. Correll, director of plans and policy for USSTRATCOM, signed the agreement as part of a larger effort to build a closer defense partnership with Brazil that will enhance each nation’s awareness within the space domain increasing the safety of their spaceflight operations.

“Cooperation and partnerships such as these are vital for the United States and our allies to maintain effective space situational awareness and for everyone to continue to benefit from the critical domain that is space,” Correll said. “These agreements build our relationships and provide insights to allow us to be more effective in space.”

Sharing Space Situational Awareness fosters openness, predictability of space operations and transparency in space

activities, enabling all nations to realize the benefits of space.

“For Brazil, partnerships in space activities are highly valuable. The signing of the agreement to share Space Situational Awareness services and information will allow us to operate with the support from USSTRATCOM, which represents an important instrument to foster a sustainable use of outer space. Moreover, it is a joint commitment to space operations safety that will further build on the close relationship between both countries,” said Lt. Gen. Jefson Borges, Chief of Operations for the Brazilian Air Force General Staff.

Brazil joins 14 nations — the United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea, France, Canada, Italy, Japan, Israel, Spain, Germany, Australia, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, Norway and Denmark — two intergovernmental organizations, the European Space Agency and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, and over 70 commercial satellite owner/operator/launchers already participating in SSA data-sharing agreements with USSTRATCOM.

“Space Situational Awareness sharing is a foundational capability that affects all future space operations and projects. The U.S. government will continue to partner with space-faring entities to promote the responsible, peaceful, and safe use of space,” Correll said.

SSA data-sharing agreements enhance multinational space cooperation and streamline the process for USSTRATCOM partners to request specific information gathered by Air Force Space Command’s 18th Space Control Squadron at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The information is crucial for launch support, satellite maneuver planning, support for on-orbit anomalies, electromagnetic interference reporting and investigation, satellite decommissioning activities and on-orbit conjunction assessments.

USSTRATCOM has global responsibilities assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence, nuclear operations, space operations, joint electromagnetic spectrum operations, global strike, missile defense and analysis and targeting.

TAPS to host Good Grief Camp

The Tragedy Assistance Program will host a Good Grief Camp Sept. 8 — 9 in Denver, Colorado. Children are able to share and learn coping skills through games, crafts and other activities in a fun and supportive environment. The 5th Annual Creek Week cleanup to begin
