GPS III SV 2 satellite successfully launched

By Space and Missile Systems Center Public Affairs LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — The U.S. Air Force and its mission partners successfully launched the second Global Positioning Systems III satellite at 9:06 a.m. EDT, Aug. 22 from Space Launch Complex-37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The Lockheed Martin-built satellite, known as “Magellan” (in honor of Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese navigator who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe), was carried to orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta IV (4,2) launch vehicle, the final flight for the Delta IV medium launch vehicle.

The USAF Space and Missile Systems Center, home to the vanguard of satellite acquisition professionals, and the nation’s launch procurer of choice, was responsible for Magellan’s rigorous Mission Assurance certifications and testing leading to full launch- and mission-readiness. SMC also conducted a rigorous source selection to ensure the ULA Delta IV rocket met all mission requirements, which included examining every single piece of hardware that built the rocket. This due diligence enabled the satellite to be reliably placed on orbit to meet civilian and warfighter communications needs.

50th Security Forces Squadron combat arms

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Security Forces Squadron Combat Arms Training and Maintenance section at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, is a mobility and readiness unit responsible for providing in garrison weapons qualification, deployment and proficiency training requirements ensuring Airmen are prepared to handle weapons systems utilized in their duties.

Staff Sgt. Garett Brew, 50th Security Force Squadron combat arms noncommissioned officer in charge said his section’s role is to make sure personnel are comfortable with both overseas and stateside weapons systems.

“We make certain the 50th SFS and 50th Space Wing’s mobility stance is at an all-time high when it comes to weapons, so if we are tasked to deploy we can be out the door at a moment’s notice,” Brew said.

CATM instructors are selected from the Security Forces career field and attend an eight-week training program.

“Even though we are Security Forces, the weapons training is broken down to the most basic components, so we receive the starting knowledge on how to work the various weapon systems and diagnose problems,” Staff Sgt. the students how to work the weapons, walk them through the process, and have the students show what they learned.”

Brew said his section is the first line in the arming requirement for Defenders.

“The Defenders people see at the gate every day, who have their pistols on them, are not even allowed to be armed unless they go through our section on an annual basis,” he said. “Still, we are cops, and we sometimes have to respond to certain things where our lives will be in danger.

We have to be prepared for it.”

Due to the Year of the Defender initiative, Brew said the squadron is ramping up their mobility and readiness

“If we are tasked to deploy we can be out the door

at a moment’s notice.”

“Originally, initial qualification and semi-annual sustainment requirements were needed, now we also have proficiency requirements added over the next three quarters,” he said. “Because of this, there is more involvement with CATM. We have to make sure our Defenders are provided with the approved courses of fire, ultimately making them better responders, better shooters, and more effective as a Defender.”

Bunton added because of the uptick in requirements, Defenders must fire more rounds of ammo than before.

“Right now each Defender fires hundreds of rounds between their M4 Carbine and M9 Berretta, with the addition of the quarterly firing, that number is doubled annually,” he said. “That doesn’t even include what we have to allocate for deployment requirements.”

According to Bunton, the CATM section works with outside agencies to support the 50th SFS. “On a weekly basis, we work with 10th Logistics Readiness Squadron for our ammunition, we work with medical to ensure we are up to date as instructors on our occupational health requirements, and we have four Air Force Office of Special Investigation detachments we do qualifications for. Relationship building is probably one of the biggest parts of our mission.”

Brew said the section helps the 50th SFS and 50th SW innovatively execute today’s operations by being the heart of base defense.

“Without us you don’t have weapons to guard the base,” Brew said. “Our Defenders wouldn’t be proficient in handling weapons to respond to a threat without us. CATM and the training flight are at the core of how important 50th SFS is to the base.”

Brew said the most rewarding part of working in the CATM section is seeing the finished product.

“It’s the one person who was nervous to qualify and you get them up to speed, the next thing you know they are shooting expert,” he said. “It gives me satisfaction knowing I did something to help someone improve.”

In 2017, Danielle McCarthy’s son returned home from college to Montrose, Colo., to care for her as she recovered from complications related to a medical procedure.

At the time, Danielle was responsible for the care of her husband, Air Force Reserve and Army Veteran David McCarthy, Jr. Tragically, David passed in 2017 from the effects of Gulf-War Syndrome. In the wake of tragedy, Danielle was forced to sell most family belongings, cash out her last $2,000 of pension, and relocate to Colorado Springs for medical care and to rebuild her life. In a short time, she launched a new business and now serves on several community boards. However, this past July, despite her best efforts, she was unable to pay her rent and looked to Mt. Carmel for help.

“There are a lot of great organizations that help veterans. But it was nice to walk into Mt. Carmel and just say, ‘I just need this boost up. That’s all I need,’ and I wasn’t made to feel I’d done anything wrong,” said Danielle. “Please understand - it does mean a lot. It is the small, little things that matter. Being back amongst veterans is amazing to me. What you do does make a difference; you made the difference that prevented me and my two sons from being homeless. Thank-you.”

Following a year of medical challenges, in August, Danielle successfully ascended the incline in Colorado Springs, gaining 2,000 feet elevation in less than a mile at grades of 45 to 65 degrees, to 8,590 feet. Mt. Carmel is grateful for the opportunity to lend a hand-up to Danielle and her children.

50th Comptroller Squadron closes out year

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As the end of the fiscal year approaches, Airmen with the 50th Comptroller Squadron financial management analysis flight at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, are preparing for their most important time of the year.

Michelle Strickland, 50th CPTS budget officer, said the end of the fiscal year is Oct. 1, but the CPTS begins closing out Aug. 1.

“The Department of Defense runs on a fiscal year [for accounting purposes] that starts in October,” she said. “It is our obligation to make sure we spend our budget appropriately and effectively in that time frame.”

“It takes a team effort, we’re all in it together or we’re not in it at all.”

Strickland said a financial management board consisting of group commanders makes a list of unit requirements and then chooses their funding priorities.

“We fund everything from toilet paper to mission-essential equipment in the restricted area,” she said. “This includes the dining facility, operations and maintenance. We work tirelessly to ensure the warfighters of Team Schriever have the best facilities and equipment to complete their mission.”

Strickland said her office aims to use all of its budget every fiscal year.

“We work toward yes,” she said. “We do everything we can to get each unit what they need. It’s our goal to ensure commanders know the financial side of their mission will be completed.”

Strickland said Schriever AFB has the third largest budget in Air Force Space Command, only trailing Patrick AFB, Florida and Peterson AFB, Colorado.

“Our budget is $154.5 million dollars,” she said. “We were able to spend all but $96 dollars of it. On top of that, despite our near 60 percent manning last year, Schriever AFB is trusted to receive any excess funds from [Air Force Space Command] bases that don’t meet their [end of fiscal year] deadlines, because of our preparation. If that doesn’t

speak to the professionalism and excellence of our team, I’m not sure what does.”

Manuel Roblesreynoso, 50th Network Operations Group budget analyst, said the 50th CPTS mission affects units across the world.

“What we do here doesn’t just impact the 50th CPTS, it doesn’t only impact Schriever AFB, what we do can be seen across the world,” he said. “All of our geographically separated units rely on us. Additionally, all of our tenant units utilize us for accounting.”

Roblesreynoso said Schriever AFB oversees the budget for AFSPC Defensive Cyberspace Operations, and it falls

on the 50th CPTS to ensure the command’s dollars are spent appropriately.

“It is up to us to come up with enterprise solutions for all of AFSPC,” he said. “The command came to us first with this and it’s important we perform our jobs correctly and at a high level.”

The 50th CPTS works with other units to close out end of the year financials, including the 50th Contracting Squadron, the 50th Program Management Division and the Schriever AFB group resource advisors.

“It takes a team effort, we’re all in it together or we’re not in it at all,” he said.

Inaugural dry tri to challenge Team Schriever

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron will host an inaugural dry triathlon Sept. 6 in the indoor running track at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

The event will consist of a 2,000 meter row, 300 body squats and a 5K run.

Seth Cannello, 50th FSS fitness center director, said the fitness center offers monthly competitions designed to boost esprit de corps, increase resiliency and motivate people to push themselves physically.

“I was looking for a way to offer a challenging workout that was similar to a sprint triathlon and I found a ‘dry triathlon’ online,” he said.

Cannello said a sprint triathlon is a short-distance triathlon (swim, bike and run) ideal for those competitors who are new to the sport.

“We used to host a sprint triathlon annually here on base; however, we no longer have access to the Tierra Vista Community pool,” he said. “The Dry Tri is a modification of a sprint triathlon.

Instead of swimming, participants will start the event by rowing 2,000 meters on a Concept II Rower (level 10). Instead of bicycling, after rowing, the participants will perform 300 body squats. “As someone who grew up running and playing soccer, I love anything fitness, especially if it’s going to be challenging,” she said.

“I’m a runner by heart, but the idea of combining that along with rowing and squats is definitely going to put my endurance to the test, so I want to push myself to see how I’m going to handle that, and if it means doing that on behalf of 4th SOPS, even better.”

Cannello added the Dry Tri is also something Airmen can easily incorporate into their workout routines.

“You don’t have to be registered in order to attempt a Dry Tri,” he said. “Anyone can read how to perform a Dry Triathlon and do it on their own. You can even change the exercises to fit your specific workout needs.”

Although the Dry Tri is full, anyone interested in registering will have to sign up for next year’s competition.

The next fitness center event is the annual half marathon scheduled for Oct. 4.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Coalition partners from Australia, Canada, Great Britain and the United States recently participated in a Space Flag exercise for the first time at Aerospace Corporation’s facility, Aug. 12-16.

Space Flag 19-3 integrated approximately 160 coalition participants, observers and distinguished guests in Air Force Space Command’s “Fight Tonight” exercise focused on using current capabilities to deter, deny and disrupt adversarial actions in the space domain.

U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Stephen Wilson and each participating nations’ top space military leaders met with Space Flag personnel to learn more about the exercise and its criticality in training warfighters in the space domain.

“The threat in space is real, and we must train like we fight — alongside our international partners — to maintain space superiority and deter conflict in the space domain,” said Wilson after meeting with Space Flag players.

SF 19-3 brought new challenges and opportunities to learn from coalition partners, who were chosen based on their current positions through existing agreements with the 21st Space Wing, 460th Space

“Being able to participate in the first ever coalition Space Flag was a privilege,” said Royal Australian Air Force Flight Lt. Gene Elliott, Chief of Training, 460th Operations Support Squadron. “It was a great opportunity to bring our perspectives and talents to the fight given Australia’s relative infancy in the warfighting domain of space.”

SF 19-3 was a critical move to normalize coalition training opportunities with junior and mid-level officers and enlisted members.

“Space Flag is a fantastic opportunity for the U.K. to participate and expand its role in future exercises,” said Royal Air Force Group Capt. Steve Blockley, Director of National Air Defence and Space Operations. “Just as we do for operators in the air, land and sea domains, this is a chance for our space operators to work alongside Allies and create partnerships that will last throughout their entire careers.”

This year, the Schriever Space Scholars Program enrolled its first international student, a space officer from France, and plans to incorporate additional international students in the coming years.

Schriever Space Scholars is the nation’s first year-long, space-centric intermediate-level education program dedicated to developing space strategists for the nation. Sponsored by AFSPC, the program

Schriever Airmen climb Royal Gorge Via Ferrata

CAÑON CITY, Colo. — The Schriever Air Force Base Outdoor Recreation office took eight Schriever Airmen on a guided hike and tour through the granite rock walls of the Royal Gorge Via Ferrata in Cañon City, Colorado, Aug. 24.

Juli Yim, Schriever Outdoor Recreation director, explained the three primary goals of the trip.

“First, to get people outside and unplugged to enjoy the wonderful natural resources we are fortunate enough to have here in Colorado,” she said. “Second, to provide an opportunity for people to meet and build relationships. Lastly, we wanted to provide an opportunity that would challenge all participants whether that was physically, mentally or both.”

The Royal Gorge Via Ferrata attraction opened this summer on the park’s 90th anniversary celebration. According to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park website, Via Ferrata is Italian for “Iron Way.” Via Ferrata is a protected climbing route with steel cables affixed to the granite. Guests secure themselves to the cable using a provided climbing kit to scale the walls.

Via Ferrata is Italian for “Iron Way.” Staff Sgt. Matthew Elder, National Space Defense Center, said this adventure challenged him and his wife and helped them see Colorado in a new light.

“We had a chance to get outside of the workplace and see more of Colorado; we had never been to Cañon City and we enjoyed it,” he said. “We had never climbed a mountain and we both had a slight fear of heights, doing this helped us overcome that and bounce back from that fear, helping our resilience.”

These outdoor recreation trips not only help Airmen experience challenges, they also create an opportunity for Airmen to meet outside of work and share common interests with others.

“This event gave us a chance to meet new people, who work on base, that we wouldn’t have had the chance to meet otherwise,” Elder said.

For Yim, the sense of accomplishment came from watching the Airmen enjoy the tour and learning techniques to climb the walls of the Royal Gorge Via Ferrata.

“Personally, I thought it was a good and challenging introduction to Via Ferrata style of climbing and could definitely see us doing an event like this again,” she said. “I think my favorite part was just watching the other participants relax and enjoy themselves.”

Yim said this and other outdoor recreation events take care of Airmen by providing morale and resilience-boosting experiences.

“I feel when people have these positive experiences, their attitudes becomes infectious when they go back to their sections,” she said.

“I believe those positive experiences and positive attitudes are what provide the catalyst for positive change within any organization.”

Outdoor recreation organizes adventures like this year round, often heavily discounted, to give Schriever Airmen the opportunity to explore Colorado and make friends along the way.

Colorado Homeless Veterans Stand Down

The El Paso County Homeless Veterans Coalition will host a stand down to support Colorado homeless veterans 9 a.m. — 2 p.m. Oct. 15, at the Colorado Springs Auditorium, Colorado.

Several military, veteran and community support organizations will provide a variety of services and products, such as clothing, personal care items, haircuts, flu shots, dental and hearing testing, housing referrals, and help with job searches.
