50th LRF keeps Team Schriever prepared

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Logistics Readiness Flight supports Schriever Airmen by managing mobility gear, to keeping Airmen on base safe from potentially dangerous packages.

Paul Hight, 50th LRF mobility technician, said it is important Airmen receive the correct gear in good condition so they are prepared for any situation while deployed.

“We maintain accountability of Air Force assets and ultimately ensure the safety of deploying Airmen by giving them proper protective gear, body armor and [other equipment] that are all in good condition,” he said.

“We support real world missions, preparing Airmen for real world situations.”

While in-processing, Airmen are required to go to the warehouse to get fitted and issued different equipment, such as mission oriented protective posture gear.

“We’re constantly monitoring our gear to ensure it’s in good condition,” he said. “Think of it like dairy, each item has a shelf-life, it’s our job to make sure it’s not expired so Airmen can utilize these items when needed.”

Earl Owens, 50th LRF supervisory logistic management specialist, said the 50th LRF is a silent sentinel for the base.

“Every item shipped to Schriever goes through our cargo screening room,” he said. “We provide protection for restricted area assets by scanning every item [and using K-9 inspections] to ensure there are no harmful substances inside any package, then we deliver each item to each building within the restricted area.”

Owens said the 50th LRF works closely with the 50th Security Forces Squadron to track every delivery, truck and driver scheduled to arrive at Schriever AFB. “We support real world missions, preparing Airmen for real world situations,” he said.

Owens said the 50th LRF embodies “excellence in all we do” by making sure they perform at a higher-lever than expected.

“We’re a logistics readiness flight, a not squadron,” he said. “However, we provide the services of a full squadron with less manning.”

T

he leadership adage “know your people” is so common it borders on cliché. When you hear this, it’s worth thinking about what the advice means and whether it is still sound. The intention behind the saying is meaningful, but I have two concerns with the advice as-is: (1) You can learn about people without interacting with them and (2) it assumes information only needs to flow one direction.

Today, it is surprisingly easy to think we know someone without ever engaging with that person.

When I was on Facebook, I recall feeling like I knew plenty about what was going on with my friends because I saw the updates on my news feed. But as I thought more, I could not remember the last time I saw, talked to, or even texted some them.

In the Air Force, we use official biographies, fact sheets, and records to get a sense of those we serve with, but this research doesn’t require any personal interaction. Though informative, these tools may provide a false sense of knowing someone and actually hinder our decision to connect more with one another. To get past this, consider how much of what you know about others is from interacting with them, and how much of that information comes from an impersonal data source.

Increasing interactions may not be effective if the information only flows in one direction. Usually it is hard to talk to someone you know nothing about, and it is even harder to talk to someone who knows more about you than you do them. The “know your people” adage overlooks the crucial importance of people knowing their leadership. To build connections, people should know more than just a leader’s philosophy, priorities or duty history. They need information that is more personal.

527th SAS Airman named Air Force Space Operator of the Year

Lee’s selection for the award is a testament to his professionalism as an aggressor and CGO.

Nathaniel Lee, 527th Aggressor Squadron chief of future operations, was named the 2018 Air Force Space Operator of the Year in the Company Grade Officer category and received his award during a visit from Col. John Gallemore, 57th Adversary Tactics Group commander, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Aug. 15.

Gallemore, from Nellis Air Force Base, said Lee’s selection for the award is a testament to his professionalism as an aggressor and CGO. “This award highlights his amazing talents and the talents of the men and women who work around him in the 527th SAS every day,” he said.

In his role within the squadron, Lee oversees and coordinates the unit’s threat replication program, which mimics threats to United States, allied space systems and their critical nodes.

“The space aggressors have a critical mission to perform electronic attack against warfighting assets in domains such as sea surface and air, the team I work with focuses more on the space domain,” Lee said.

Lee said the award is the greatest honor of his professional career.

“I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to tackle new and exciting projects for the space community by my leadership, and to have been surrounded by incredible totalforce teams across events such as Space Flag and the Air Force Space Command Weapons and Tactics Conference that made the work that contributed to this award possible,” he said.

For Lee, his award also has a more personal meaning.

“My late father, Capt. Donald Lee was named the Army Aviator of the Year in 1996, the year before he was killed in an aviation accident,” Lee said. “While I have never tried to compare careers or make mine match continued page 5 | SPACE OPERATOR

Although the 527th SAS is located on an AFSPC installation, it is actually a part of Air Combat Command, which is where Lee competed first.

“While most people think of AFSPC as being the core of military space professionals, which is certainly true, ACC also has a tremendous amount of very talented space operators, including my fellow aggressors, members of the test community, and the U.S. Air Force Weapons School,” Lee said. “Winning at ACC and then at the Air Force level, I think emphasizes how the entire Air Force enterprise works together to drive space operations forward.”

Lee has been assigned to Schriever AFB since he graduated from technical training school.

“It has been almost six years now,” Lee said. “I have worked seven different jobs across several organizations in that time but all on this base.”

“I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to tackle new

and exciting projects for the space community by my leadership.”

Lee said he did not know he was nominated until he won and he is grateful for the award being pushed forward.

“My leadership at all levels has given me the power to go out and innovate for this community and tackle the kinds of projects that helped make me competitive in the process, so to them I say thank you,” he said.

Lt. Col. Jason Adams, 527th SAS commander, said the award speaks highly of Lee, the space aggressors, the 57th WG and the great work Lee does with the squadron.

“Competition was very tight for this award and it’s great to see one of our own take it home,” he said.

One piece of advice Lee had for his fellow space operators is the space community is changing rapidly and they should strive to understand what it means to be a warfighter.

“Five years from now our work today will be unrecognizable in many areas,” Lee said. “We are only going to be successful in defending our national security interests and protecting our access to space into the future, if our operators at the lowest level are thinking innovatively; pushing boundaries and breaking down old assumptions about what is possible; and focusing on the toughest tactical problems in the community. I hope that every space operator feels empowered to make changes and drive forward every day.”

Schriever leaders host Warrior’s Edge training

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing leadership team hosted Warrior’s Edge training in the base fitness center at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Aug. 15.

The training, part of leadership’s efforts to improve communications and connections across the installation, included 140 mission partner and Air Force Space Command participants.

“We are making an investment in our people,” said Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander. “We have some challenges here at Schriever and within the Air Force. As General [David] Goldfein, [Air Force Chief of Staff] said, ‘we don’t know how to solve this,’ but we are looking at a variety of things that can help.”

Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks head coach; Mike Gervais, sports psychologist; and retired Lt. Col. Jannell MacAulay, Air Force human performance consultant; developed the enhanced performance training.

TRAINING From page 6 “I was part of a high performance team that was regularly ranked first in the world, but I didn’t have joy in the experience, my personal life was a mess, I never trained my mind,” said Davis. “I started investing in myself first so I can be there for others.”

A major portion of the Warrior’s Edge training is introspection and reflection to understand what is happening inside one’s self.

A central theme of the Warrior’s Edge training is mindfulness and

reframing one’s perception of stress.

“The mere act of having a cell phone on a person increases distraction by 20 percent,” MacAulay said. “Our minds wander 50 percent of our awake time.

We have to be aware this is happening so we can focus on the tasks and people in front of us.”

The training identifies focus as a decision, but refocusing as a skill.

“Refocusing takes practice, it’s like muscle training,” MacAulay said. “We have to do the reps and sets to see the results.”

Another key take away, is understanding some principles will have more im-

pact for some than others.

For Davis it’s optimism and she engages every situation or person from a position of gratitude.

“Those who approach life with realistic optimism score higher in resiliency research,” Davis said. “What’s more, those who practice gratitude for just seven days demonstrated increased happiness six months later, even those suffering from depression.”

A simple way to practice gratitude is to write down three good things one witnessed or experienced each day for 30 days.

“If you can train optimism and reframe the narrative, you can increase your resiliency,” she said.

The training session lasted eight hours but was just the beginning of the program. Each participant will be enrolled in an 8-week digital training environment to do more internal exploration to reinforce concepts learned in the presentation.

Additionally, the presenters hosted two 1-hour sessions Friday, Aug. 16, to engage a wider base audience on the importance of mindfulness.

“I can honestly say if we applied everything we learned here today, we can change our culture and the direction of this wing,” Smith said to close the training. “We need your feedback.

Please let us know what you thought of today, how the online training goes and how you see this impacting your teams.”

Col. Jack Fischer, 50th SW vice commander, echoed the commander and reiterated the importance of the feedback.

“We brought people in from across the command, we’re the pilot base for this program within the command,” Fischer said. “Your feedback will determine if this is something other bases should add to their resilience program to help our Airmen.”

Airmen observe Days of Remembrance, recognize Holocaust survivors SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Schriever Airmen observed Days of Remembrance at the fitness center, Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Aug. 16, to recognize Holocaust survivors and the more than 6 million European Jews and 11 million others who died as a result of Nazi persecution in World War II. Schriever AFB hosted the event to increase awareness of the Holocaust and encourage thoughtful discussion. Although it is typically observed in April, Schriever AFB observes it in August to coincide with Diversity Day.

“Today’s event helps us to remember not only the oppressed, but also those who ultimately helped with the liberation of the concentration camps, and

the defeat of tyranny.”

Maj. Michael Bram, U.S. Air Force Academy chaplain and rabbi, began the event by reading a prayer. He said though his prayer focused on the European Jews who endured the Holocaust, there were other victims.

“It is important to remember this wasn’t just a crime against Jews, though we were the prime target. It was a crime against humanity,” Bram said. “I’ve been told only about 41 percent of Americans are aware of Auschwitz, and if that is close to accurate, it should be 100 percent.”

Col. James Smith, 50th Space Wing commander, followed Bram with opening remarks that emphasized the importance of recalling the tragic event, the victims and those who fought against Nazi persecution.

“Today’s event helps us to remember not only the oppressed, but also those who ultimately helped with the liberation of the concentration camps, and the defeat of tyranny,” Smith said.

Todd Hennessay, Colorado Holocaust Educators director and educator, and guest speaker for the event, provided an informative presentation on the history of the Holocaust and the work happening to record the accounts of survivors to preserve the information for future generations.

He also said more historical evidence has surfaced in the last five years than in the previous 45 years.

“The greatest generation is passing on and a lot of service members from that time collected photographs and documented meeting survivors, or in some cases perpetrators, and when they came home all of that would go into a box,” Hennessay said.

Hennessay explained because these boxes are being opened, stories are being found and it has shifted the focus of

how information is being obtained and preserved.

“What we are starting to focus on now is not the killing process, but the personal process,” he said. “One of the most poignant pieces to this history is looking at the individual. We can talk about the big numbers: how many were murdered, how many were in this camp, how many were in that ghetto — but when you look at the individual, there is so much to learn.”

“Victims would take their personal items, the most prized items they could still hold, and throw them into the forests and fields rather than let the Nazi’s get ahold of them, hoping that someday we would find them,” he said.

Senior Airman Rodnecia Perry, 50th Security Forces Squadron entry controller and event volunteer, said she got involved with the event to learn more about the Holocaust.

“I feel the team who put the event together and the guest speaker did a great job,” Perry said. “Before, all I knew was [the Holocaust] was a mass murder of Jews. Through this event, I learned about the views that led to the mass murders and the human aspect of the victims and survivors,” she said.

Airmen respond to crisis, donate blood

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Airmen from the 50th Operations Support Squadron donated blood in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in response to recent mass shootings in the United States.

Second Lt. Charles Cooper, 50th OSS student, organized the event, which he described as a personal matter.

“Recently there have been mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio,” he said. “My girlfriend and her family live in El Paso and I’ve been there frequently. I thought this was a great opportunity to help despite the distance.”

Cooper said 18 Airmen from the 50th OSS attended the event and donated a pint of blood each in support of the victims of the shootings.

“Donating blood is a pretty selfless act,” he said. “The fact we had 18 people come out on such short notice really shows our Airmen embody ‘service before self.’”

Cooper said being active in the community is a good way to give back and helps strengthen unit camaraderie.

“Being in the military makes it easier to participate in events like these,” he said. “You’re surrounded by people who are willing to help accomplish whatever you’re wanting to do. However, you don’t have to be in the military to give back, it’s really something I think everyone should be doing, and it’s very rewarding.”

Airman 1st Class Sophia Carbajal, 50th OSS student, was one of the 18 Airmen who donated blood.

“There’s been a high demand for blood donations and with everything going on I thought this was the perfect opportunity to give back to the community.”

Airmen are expected to the live by three core values, integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do.

“In the Air Force, we associate the core value service before self with our mission,” she said. “The 50th OSS decided to demonstrate this core value by donating blood to support the communities recently impacted by mass shootings.”

Carbajal said participating in something bigger than yourself is important.

“Take advantage of any opportunities you can that allow you to make a difference in the world,” she said. “By helping others, whether it’s donating your time, money or even blood, your actions can go a long way and make a difference.
