resno Air National Guard Base, Calif. — As you progress in your career and climb the ladder of development, you will inherently acquire greater responsibility and more will be expected of you.

As projects increase and deadlines rapidly approach, stress levels can exceed record highs and other aspects of life may take a back seat. As military leaders, you will need to focus your attention on mission accomplishment, daily occupational requirements, and the well-being of your Airman.

An effective way to mitigate the pressures of daily demands is to practice good time management. By utilizing your time proficiently to maximize productivity, you will decrease the daily tensions and increase time allotted to other taskers. Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency and productivity.

Remember, just because you are busy, does not mean you are being productive. To aid in your efficiency, set daily goals.

This will provide much needed clarity and purpose to your work. Establishing tangible objectives is a key component of

time management. Organizing your tasks into a consolidated list can help bring direction to what may seem like chaos.

Next, prioritize your projects based on urgency and importance. Focus primarily on tasks that are essential and need to be accomplished the same day.

Be sure to shut down distractions. Studies have shown that Americans tend to check their phones up to 96 times a day, or roughly every 10 minutes. Social media can wait, but your

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 25th Space Range Squadron transferred to the United States Space Force from Air Combat Command July 24, 2020, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, as a part of the USSF reorganization.

The 25th SRS is the Department of Defense’s only space test and training range, providing customers with a safe and secure environment to support space control technique development and space test, training and exercise activities.

“We’re here to provide the USSF with an electronic space range to develop lethal, agile and resilient joint warfighters,” said Senior Master Sgt. Harold Wilson, 25th SRS superintendent.

The unit is located at Schriever AFB and was officially transferred to the USSF after the signing of Special Order GD-013.

“Transferring to the Space Force puts us in a setting that better caters to our mission,” Wilson said. “Being in a space-oriented service is going to make communication easier and help us better equip the space warfighters with the training they need.”

The unit is now a part of the Space Training and Readiness Provisional Delta. They are joined by other units such as the Distributed Mission Operations Center for Space and the 527th Space Aggressors Squadron.

“We’ve bounced around the former Air Force Space Command, ACC and now we’re moving to the Space Force,” Wilson said. “This is about finding the

right home, and the Space Force is that home for our squadron.”

While they are running simulations, the SRS acts as referee, creating and enforcing the rules warfighters must follow. Despite the transfer, to an entirely different branch of service, the unit isn’t expecting any impact on operations and is instead looking to the future.

“We’re currently working a project to stand-up an on-orbit range,” said Tech.

Sgt. Alfredo Frausto, 25th SRS Current Projects noncommissioned officer in charge. “We need to be in view of the satellite with our ground stations, but with this new on-orbit range, we’ll be able to conduct our training and testing from anywhere in the world.”

Wilson said the unit expects 50-75% of its Airmen to also transfer to the USSF from the Air Force.

“This is huge,” Frausto said. “The last time we’ve seen a new branch stand-up was in 1947. To be a part of this is monumental. People say the ‘sky’s the limit,’ but here we are, going even higher.”

Schriever STEM program aims to inspire, educate youth

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Schriever science, technology, engineering and mathematics program aims to inspire and educate the local youth by providing events with hands-on learning activities that have a specific focus in educational subjects that could lead to an interest in space operations.

Each year, Moore organizes a large STEM event for local youth, as well as smaller events. At this year’s main event, Moore plans to have different stations children can visit and participate in activities, and to have a science presentation from a local expert.

Due to COVID-19, the event is postponed and might have to occur virtually.

Schriever’s mission heavily incorporates STEM so Airmen here have an increased opportunity to use their expertise and experience to inspire future generations to follow in their footsteps.

“Our goal is to utilize Schriever personnel’s knowledge and experience, and incorporate that expertise to grow the STEM program and spark military-connected students’ imagination,” said Ruth Moore, 50th Force Support Squadron Child and Youth Education Services school liaison.

Last year, the event featured several booths where children participated in hands-on learning activities in basic orbital mechanics, Newton’s laws, Kepler’s laws, virtual reality and more.

“STEM empowers individuals with the skills to succeed and adapt to this increasingly complex, changing, technological world,” Moore said. “STEM is intended

to lead to innovation necessary to sustain our economy. This innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas.”

Over the last decade, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported STEM positions increased by 17%, while other occupations grew at 9.8%.

Between 2018 and 2028, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates STEM jobs will continue to grow by nearly 9%, while other occupations are only predicted to grow by 5%.

According to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, economic projections point to a need for one

million more STEM professionals than the U.S. will produce at the current rate over the next decade.

“STEM is important because it pervades every part of our lives,” Moore said. “STEM activities provide hands-on and [intellectually stimulating] lessons for the student, making STEM both fun and interesting.

Additionally, it helps the student do much more than just learn; STEM activities build children’s critical thinking skills and sense of curiosity.”

Moore said STEM skills relate subject-specific skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to generic skills and dispositions. During her time as

the school liaison, she’s seen STEM related impacts in students: • Creativity • Inquiry Skills • Critical analysis • Teamwork and collaboration • Initiative • Communication • Digital literacy • Problem solving Recently, Schriever’s STEM program began transitioning to include art, soon to be known STEAM. “This is the trend nationwide,” Moore said. “Art is about discovering and creating ingenious ways of problem solving, integrating principles and presenting information.”

Additionally, the Air Force Public Affairs office is planning a STEM education program aimed to target 3rd through 8th graders. As part of this new program, an education outreach plan on air and space topics is being developed to target youth via digital learning.

Topics would range from all career fields and be taught at a level appropriate to the target audience. Schriever is planning to utilize the space topics to engage students, specifically “How GPS Works and Th reats” and “Different Disciplines of Intelligence.”

“It will broaden the impact through STEM education and will improve schools and communities,” Moore said. “Increasing access within our school systems and homes opens doors for all learners. More importantly, this creates opportunities where they previously did not exist.”

Th rough these changes, the Schriever STEM program will continue to provide the local youth with STEM events, hands-on learning activities and new opportunities.

USAFWC, 50th SFS secure wins on the diamond

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The softball season continues to inch closer to the playoffs at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, and Airmen put another two games in the books Aug. 4, 2020 at the softball field.

In the first game, the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center defeated the 50th Operations Support Squadron 24-8 while the 50th Security Forces Squadron earned its first win of the season with a 13-11 victory against the 4th Support Operations Squadron in the finale.

“I’ve been coaching for three years and the past two haven’t been so great,” said Brandon Beisner, 17th Test Squadron project manager and player for USAFWC. “So it’s nice to have [four wins] under our belt.”

The USAFWC’s hot start in the first inning propelled the unit to a 10-0 lead it never relinquished.

The 50th OSS had back-to-back two-run innings, and outscored USAFWC 3-2 in the third to make it 12-7.

The Warfare Center totaled 12 runs in the top of the fourth and fift h and held the 50th OSS to one run the remainder of the game, resulting in a 24-8 win.

“I feel like we have potential to go somewhere this year,” Beisner said. “We’re 4-1 now and I feel like we’re in a good place.”

In the final game of the day, the 50th SFS clawed its way to victory against the 4th SOPS. After 50th SFS built a 3-0 lead in the first inning, it grew to

7-0 following a four-run second inning. But the 4th SOPS responded with a 6-run bottom of the second to close the gap to 7-6.

Both teams scored one run in the third to make it 8-7 but the 50th SFS built a cushion after the fift h, when it outscored the 4th SOPS 2-1 to make it 10-8.

The 50th SFS managed to earn three more runs in the top of the seventh and held 4th SOPS to two runs to give the game its final margin.

Edward Wilder, 50th SFS Plans and Programs noncommissioned officer in charge, said the team didn’t finish as expected last season and was happy with their performance against the 4th SOPS. “It feels really good to be able to get out and get this victory,” he said. “Any time a team starts to rally you get nervous, but we had faith in our defense and they did their part.”

CJ Thornton, 50th Force Support Squadron recreation assistant and sports representative, is grateful to provide Airmen with the opportunity to play softball.

The 50th FSS staff didn’t know if they’d have a softball season due to the pandemic, but they’re now in their third week of competition.

“I hoped we’d be this smooth and I figured throughout the year there’d be some hiccups,” Thornton said. “I didn’t know what they’d be or when they’d happen, but having everyone out here to let loose outside and hearing the friendly banter among players is great to see.”

Why I wear the uniform Airman 1st Class Leslie Lindsay 50th Security Forces Squadron

CHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Many could say I have been fortunate and successful in my life thus far; college graduate, student athlete, professional dancer, humanitarian, nutritionist, trainer, world traveler and all-around go-getter. But I am so much more than my accomplishments. I am the daughter of a factory worker, the sister of a coal miner, the aunt to a baseball player, horse rider and another 10 sticky fingers full of adventure and giggles. Schriever Airman aims high; pursues Ph.D.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Staff Sgt. William Chorpenning, 4th Space Operations Squadron training manager, knew at age 14 he wanted to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology.

Chorpenning will finish his master’s degree in developmental psychology and personality disorders next October at Denver University prior to working for his Ph.D.

“It’s important Airmen discover their passion and continue to

achieve goals in that field.”

Chorpenning looks to fulfill that goal next October when he starts work toward his doctorate’s degree in developmental psychology and personality disorders.

“It’s hard to describe, but it’s definitely a lifetime achievement,” Chorpenning said. “The goal was to obtain by 31 and I’m on track. Right now, I’m 25 and the earliest I could get it would be 28 or 29. It feels good.”

Chorpenning used the Community College of the Air Force programs, namely, the Air University — Associate to Baccalaureate Cooperative to assist with his degrees.

According to Air Force Virtual Education Center website, “The AU-ABC directs Airmen with an associate degree in applied science degrees from the Community College of the Air Force to a collection of accredited colleges and universities to consider when completing a four-year degree.”

Chorpenning researched educational regulations to see the available benefits for Airmen and mapped his route to a Ph.D.

In October 2021, Chorpenning will begin working toward his doctorate’s degree in developmental psychology and personality disorders.

“Using the program helps shave time off your degree plan,” Chorpenning said. “I was able to go from zero to 60 credits in two months and shaved off two years of college.

I got my bachelor’s degree in [psychology] in about two years and six months. I think the CCAF is great, if you know how you can use it.”

Chorpenning said it’s important Airmen discover their passion and continue to achieve goals in that field.

“My vocation is to teach and help people, and developmental psychology is a way to help out,” he said. “I want to help people who are around my age; in that transition period between 18 and 25. I feel like you make some of the most difficult decisions in your life during that period.

If you make the wrong one, it can affect a long period of your life.”

Master Sgt. Bryan Scroggs, 4th SOPS first sergeant, isn’t surprised by Chorpenning‘s pursuit of a Ph.D. Scroggs said it showcases Chorpenning‘s character. “[Staff Sergeant] Chorpenning’s actions toward progressing his education is absolutely on par with the Airman he is,” Scroggs said. “He is an individual who cares about making a difference. He understands and embodies the importance of education. The steps Chorpenning continues to make are an example of an individual who will never settle for mediocracy.”

Chorpenning‘s work isn’t just beneficial for his future, Scroggs also realizes the positive example it sets for fellow Airmen.

“Excellence in all we do does not just reside in the mission and our official duties,” Scroggs said. “Our education and knowledge has a direct impact on how we accomplish the mission. Our knowledge allows individuals to be critical thinkers. Critical thinkers are never happy just settling for how things are being accomplished.”

When Chorpenning earns his degree, Scroggs said the 4th SOPS plans to celebrate the accomplishment accordingly.

“The most important part is to get him out in front of our Airmen,” Scroggs said. “[We want to] allow him to share his experiences and accomplishments with them.

This was not an easy road and there were sacrifices that had to be made. Airmen need to hear personal stories and accomplishments from other Airmen. This allows our Airmen to understand they are no different and can accomplish anything with dedication and hard work.”

527th SAS crosses over to USSF

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 527th Space Aggressors Squadron transferred to the United States Space Force from Air Combat Command July 24, 2020, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, as a part of the USSF reorganization.

The 527th SAS’s mission is to prepare joint and coalition forces to fight in contested space environments by analyzing, teaching and replicating realistic, relevant and integrated space threats.

“Our ability to quickly identify and assess capabilities of near-peer adversaries and non-state actors,” said Master Sgt. Kendra Williams, 527th SAS intelligence flight chief. "This is critical to ensuring our warfighters

can effectively plan, execute and succeed in any 21st century battlespace they encounter.”

The unit is located at Schriever AFB and was officially transferred to the USSF after the signing of Special Order GD-013.

“The transfer [to Space Force] will enable us to shift our mission to align more succinctly with USSF’s training objectives,” said Lt. Col. Jennifer Hodges, 527th SAS commander. “It will allow us to focus on adversary threat replication that is critical to developing a space warfighter equipped with the knowledge necessary to maintain operational capabilities in a contested, degraded, operationally limited environment.”

The 527th’s role in the USSF is to play as the ‘bad guys’ during trainings. The unit replicates space threats so operators can train against their adversaries before encountering them in the real world.

“We are the only space aggressor squadron, which distinguishes our squadron from all the other squadrons in USSF,” Hodges said. “The aggressors are a unique and selectively manned unit and will provide the USSF with an indigenous capability to train against a thinking adversary space threat.”

After falling under Air Combat Command since 2006, the unit is now a part of the Space Training and Readiness Provisional Delta. They are joined by other units such as the Distributed Mission Operations Center for Space and the 25th Space Range Squadron.

“As space operators, we don’t want the first time we encounter the threat to be in a conflict,” Hodges said.

“The space aggressors will provide an avenue for space warfighters to hone their expertise and optimize space weapons system capabilities against the adversary in controlled environment.”

50th CONS time to shine:

FISCAL YEAR CLOSEOUT

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— When it comes to appropriated funding, the U.S. government operates on an annual cycle designed by Congress.

The fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 — Sept.

30, so the end of year closeout references the ending of the current fiscal year and the transition to the next fiscal year. As the year comes to a close, the Federal Government works to ensure funds are used on mission essential goods and services before the funds expire.

Th is means the 50th Contracting Squadron works to ensure Schriever has everything it needs to continue the mission before the next fiscal year begins.

“Toward the end of the [fiscal] year, organizations loosen the purse strings and feel more comfortable spending,” said Tech. Sgt. Sean Holder, 50th CONS contracting officer. “This means the 50th Contracting [Squadron] is working overtime to get all the money obligated before 30 September.”

Most units have a budget designed to last the entire fiscal year so they can properly support their mission. This typically leads to a reserve of funds going into the last two quarters of the fiscal year.

Holder, who analyzed contract spending and conducted Air Force wide data analysis as an Airman, said the difference in the amount of contracts awarded at the beginning or middle of the fiscal year versus the end of the fiscal year is significant.

“Air Force wide, over 90% of yearly spending happens in the last three months of the fiscal year,” Holder said.

“While contracting has steady requirements throughout the year, the end of the fiscal year is when we award the most contracts, by far.”

A successful closeout for yearly funding is when the 50th CONS obligates all the funding the Garrison has to spend.

“At the end of the day, Airman all across the base need supplies and services to make the mission succeed, and if contracting can ensure no dollar is left behind, then it was a successful year,” said Staff Sgt. Arron Riffle, 50th CONS contracting officer.

In order to ensure a requirement is awarded a contract before the end of the fiscal year, the 50th CONS sends out a memo to the base identifying the deadline for submitting a requirements package.

“If they [don’t meet the cutoff ], we do our best to leverage all of our contract-

ing tools to turn the impossible into the possible,” Riffle said.

Since typical funding is only available for that fiscal year, units must ensure they get the funding obligated on a contract; otherwise their needs will have to wait until the next year’s funding is available.

“The uncertainty of an Oct. 1 budget and the reluctance to spend money until September adds stress and our mission partners [worry they] won’t receive their necessary goods or services,” Holder said.

Aside from contracting, the 21st Comptroller Squadron and the Schriever AFB Legal Office also play important roles in the closeout.

“Both units are absolutely crucial,” Riffle said. “You can’t write contracts without funding, and legal provides overwatch.”

A successful closeout for yearly

funding is when the 50th CONS obligates all the funding the Garrison has to spend.

The 50th CONS also credits what they’re able to accomplish to their mission partners.

“Nothing contracting does is done alone,” Holder said. “We work closely with our mission partners to understand their requirements and find the best way to get them what they need. For this to occur, we have to be in sync.”

While this time of year is typically busy for 50th CONS and 21st CPTS, COVID-19 added an extra challenge to the process.

“We essentially lost the last few months of preparation time as we switched from traditional home station contracting to actively participating in a state-side contingency,” Riffle said. “Now, with the contingency efforts converting from a sprint to a marathon, the end of year closeout timelines are smaller than ever.”

Despite these challenges, the 50th CONS is still executing their mission and is on track for a successful closeout.

“Fortunately, I work with a squadron of amazing people and even with COVID-19, nothing has faltered their ability to execute the contracting mission,” Riffle said. “That only happens because individuals all across the squadron are spending late hours, weekends in the office and teleworking from home to ensure that happens.”

Space Force releases 1st doctrine, defines “spacepower” as distinct form of military power

WASHINGTON — Fewer than eight months after its creation, America’s newest military service published its first doctrine, the U.S. Space Force’s Space Capstone Publication, entitled Spacepower.

The SCP, which is the first articulation of spacepower as a separate and distinct form of military power, serves as a foundation upon which to build additional doctrine as expanding challenges are continually addressed in the changing space domain.

“One of the principles of an independent service is the creation of doctrine,” said Gen. Jay Raymond, chief of space operations, USSF. “The Space Capstone Publication explains why spacepower is a vital element of U.S. prosperity and security — now and in the future — and guides its employment in multidomain operations. As the USSF continues to grow and mature, we will continue to evolve our doctrine to stay on the cutting edge of defending our interests in space.”

The SCP embodies the Department of the Air Force’s continued commitment to establishing the Space Force in a manner that minimizes cost and bureaucracy and maximizes focus on space doctrine, training, and capability.

Covering a series of topics to include unique aspects of the space domain, the relationship between national and

military spacepower, and the employment and development of space forces, this foundational doctrine serves as a key guidepost for the ethos and values of the nation’s newest armed service.

While existing joint and Service documents provide space-related doctrine, they were authored when space was still regarded as a benign domain. The new capstone publication is tailored to the present reality that our adversaries have made space a warfighting domain.

“Agility, innovation, and boldness have always been the cornerstone traits of military space forces,” Raymond said.

“We must continue to harness these traits as we build our new service and a new professional body of knowledge.”

The work to write this doctrine began as a grass roots effort among a small team of people. “It was a coalition of the willing,” said Col. Casey Beard, commander, Space Delta 9. “We started work in August 2019 and met every two weeks — brainstorming, debating, building an outline, and assigning sections to draft.”

The team ranged in rank from Technical Sergeant to Colonel and also included a space professional from the U.S. Army.

In February, the USSF hosted a summit to develop the initial framework for Space Force doctrine. During the summit, representatives from all military services and exchange officers from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia offered additional recommendations on the scope and key ideas in the proposed publication.

Given the emerging state of spacepower, this doctrine will inevitably evolve over time as it is applied, evaluated, and refined.

As the USSF defends the nation’s interests in the space domain, it will leverage the strategic foundation of the Space Capstone Publication to support the development of operational and tactical USSF doctrine, intended to guide the development and employment of military space forces.
