Motorcycle riders, safety on the road

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Riding the winding mountain roads of Colorado can be dangerous, especially when gravel is on the road. Around every corner a hazard can present itself without warning.

A way to avoid wiping out due to gravel is to take corners wide and at an easy pace. This will increase vision through the corner and allow you to assess the situation.

Another major hazard for riders are potholes.

A rider often comes into contact with a pothole when they are following other vehicles too closely and are unable to maneuver out of the way. To avoid damage, riders should leave enough space between them and the car in front of them to allow enough time to maneuver.

Another tip is to avoid staring at the pothole. Staring at the pothole while riding can cause target fixation, which inhibits people from getting out of the way. It is best to look forward and maneuver to avoid it.

When riding on base, all riders, both military and civilian, need to have all the appropriate personal protective equipment; this includes a helmet, eye protection if the helmet is not full faced, a long shirt, long pants, over the ankle shoes and leather gloves.

Newly named Space Force bases to continue partnership with AF Academy

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.

— Cadets commissioning into the Space Force after graduating from the Air Force Academy could find themselves at three new Space Force bases in Colorado Springs.

Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station is now a Space Force station and Peterson and Schriever are now Space Force bases, the end-result of an Air Force initiative for the burgeoning Space Force to establish its own culture and identity.

“Many of our main space missions are conducted at those three locations and will continue to,” said Col. Jeff Greenwood, the Academy’s Space Force liaison and head of the space detachment at the Academy. “The fact they moved from "Air Force base" to "Space Force base" simply realigns the name to the critical space missions conducted there, but it does not change mission, jobs or assignments cadets can pursue in the Space Force or Air Force. Nothing changes

with regard to the effect our cadets continue to have on space warfighting.”

Peterson’s history ranges from air defense to space warfighting and dates back to World War II. The base played a central role in U.S. and allied national defense for decades and continues to provide mission support to Space Operations Command and its tenant units.

Schriever centers combat power for space and Cheyenne Mountain serves as North American Aerospace Defense Command and Northern Command's alternate command center.

“Although we are celebrating our new designation as Space Force installations today, we are also honoring the rich history we’ve built here on the front range and in the Pikes Peak Region,” said Lt. Gen Stephen Whiting, commander of Space Operations Command at Peterson during a July 26 renaming ceremony at the base.

The Space Force opened in December 2019.

Wanted: Innovative ideas for Spark Tank 2022 Staff Report Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — Spark Tank 2022, a Department of the Air Force annual competition in which Airmen and Guardians pitch innovative solutions to operational problems, will accept submissions in early August 2021.

Spark Tank is co-sponsored by the Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for Management (SAF/MG) and AFWERX. “Spark Tank is a crucial part of the Air Force’s relentless search for innovative technology,” said Col. Nathan Diller, AFWERX director. “The operational skills and knowledge our Airmen and Guardians possess give them the expertise not only to identify problems unique to their jobs, but also solutions.”

This is the fifth year of the Spark Tank competition. Spark Tank 2021 drew more than 300 submissions with five finalists.

finalists have offered improvements from smart weapons loading checklists to robotic process automation for personnel records and everything in-between.

As a bonus, SAF/MG and AFWERX are introducing Spark Tank innovation awards to recognize innovative solutions proposed and developed by Airmen and Guardians

across the enterprise. The awards are designed to encourage innovation development, talent retention, and speed up adopting emerging, game-changing technologies that impact the Air and Space Force.

“Spark Tank offers a great opportunity to highlight the innovative spirit of our Airmen and Guardians,” said William Gautier, Spark Tank director. “These risk-takers, idea makers, and entrepreneurs reject the status quo, instead they seek inventive answers that improve how our jobs are done.”

To enable participation, interested members will submit ideas through the recently launched Guardian and Airmen Innovation Network portal. GAIN allows personnel to share ideas, critique submissions, and vote on the most promising solutions.

Innovation submissions are due via GAIN no later than close of business, Oct. 1, 2021.

Finalists will be announced in January 2022. The pitch-finals competition will take place on March 4, 2022, at the Air Force Association’s Aerospace Warfare Symposium in Orlando, Florida.

— The Air Force Academy reopened to the public August 2, nearly 17 months after closing to all but official business to safeguard its community during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re excited to welcome the community back to the U.S. Air Force Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Richard Clark, the school’s superintendent. “I’m proud of our Academy team for their incredible work to ensure a safe, successful environment for our cadets, faculty and families.

Cadets have been back since last fall and we’ve learned to work in an environment focused on reducing COVID risks.”

In keeping with Defense Department guidance, all service members, federal employees, onsite contractor employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status, will wear a mask indoors at the Academy, according to Col. Christopher Leonard, commander of the 10th Air Base Wing — the Academy’s host unit.

“El Paso County, Colorado is designated an area of high community transmission,” Leonard wrote in a memo sent to all cadets and staff members at the base, July 29.

The 10th Air Base Wing is responsible for the health and safety of service members, families, faculty and cadets who live and work on the base.

With the reopening of the base, the Academy begins a gradual transition to normal operations in hosting the public.

Masks Required Academy gates open to visitors 5:30 a.m. — 10 p.m., Aug. 2. Visitors are require to have a state-issued ID, Defense

Department ID or passport, and random vehicle inspections may be required.

Current Defense Department and Academy rules require all individuals to wear a mask inside Academy facilities.

Masks are required for all visitors while on the Academy, regardless of vaccination status and in accordance with DOD guidance.

Heat-Related Illnesses Heat Cramps: Are painful, brief muscle cramps. Muscles may spasm or jerk involuntarily. Heat cramps can occur during exercise or work in a hot environment or begin a few hours later.

Heat Exhaustion: There are two types of heat exhaustion. 1. Water depletion- Signs include excessive thirst, weakness, headache, and loss of consciousness. 2. Salt depletion- Signs include nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, and dizziness.

Heat Stroke: Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. Heat stroke can kill or cause damage to the brain and other internal organs.

Heat stroke results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures — usually in combination with dehydration — which leads to failure of the body’s temperature control system.

Safe Work Practices to Prevent HeatRelated Illnesses: • Allow for acclimatization to a hot environment before any strenuous work begins. It takes roughly two weeks for an individual to acclimate to a hot environment.

• Drink plenty of water during strenuous activities especially in hot environments. An average person sweats between roughly 27 oz. to 47 oz. per hour during intense labor. To put that amount into perspective, an average water bottle holds 16.9oz.

• Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors where there is AC.
