Senior Airman Christopher Thao, 50th Communications Squadron network operations technician, provides core services to Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado. These services include creating printers as well as maintaining, patching and upgrading servers, which enables the 50th CS to administer shared drives. Spouses’ Club supports base through thrift store, formalwear rentals

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — With the U.S. Air Force Ball upcoming, many members of the front range community are already hunting down finery so they’ll look as sharp as an officer’s sword. Unfortunately, such formalwear tends to cost a pretty penny. Thanks to the Peterson, Schriever, Cheyenne Mountain Spouses' Club, anyone with access to Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, can rent a dress and accessories without breaking the bank. Except for what the renter pays to have their dress dry cleaned, renting from Cinderella’s Closet is totally free.

All the money that the Spouses’ Club takes in goes back into the base communities.

Alley Kendall, who runs the PSC Spouses’ Club alongside President Ruben Chavarria, said people come in most often to rent an outfit for balls, award ceremonies, Airman Leadership School graduations or high school proms.

“These last few years were a challenge with all of those types of events cancelled, but we are seeing an increase in the need for dresses again,” said Kendall.

Cinderella’s Closet is located inside of the RePete Thrift Shop, located on Peterson SFB, which is another way the Spouses’ Club keeps the space base communities dressed and supplied, offering an affordable mix of donations and consigned items. Like Cinderella’s Closet, it’s open to anyone with base access.

“Because we offer the consignment program, we often get brand new items and items of higher value than just taking straight donations,” said Kendall. “Anyone with base access can sign up to sell items in the shop for a split of the profit. We take care of shelving, tagging, advertising, and the consigner has the ease of selling items any time rather than waiting for a yard sale day.”

All the money that the Spouses’ Club takes in goes back into the base communities. According to Kendall, the Spouses’ Club and thrift store have around $10,000 to $12,000 in outreach funds each year, which goes to many

places, including charitable events like Thanksgiving gift cards at the commissary, Valentine’s day gifts for deployed spouses and more.

“Our primary focus each year is our scholarship program that awards funds to high school seniors and spouses,” said Kendall.

Ultimately, all that the Spouses’ Club does relies on the generosity of the military community. The extensive wardrobe within Cinderella’s Closet, for instance, has been assembled from years of donations made by service members.

“A few years ago, I had someone reach out [who] was traveling here for a [U.S. Air Force Academy] football game and wanted to bring dresses to donate to the shop,” Kendall said.

Dress rentals through Cinderella’s Closet require an appointment, and Kendall recommends scheduling said appointment around two weeks before the event. All rented outfits must be dry cleaned and returned within two weeks after the event, barring special arrangements, which can be made by phone. — On June 10, 2021, Maj. Gen. Matthew W. McFarlane, U.S. Army Fort Carson Garrison commander, issued an updated off-limits areas and establishments memorandum.

The memorandum applies to all uniformed Armed Forces personnel in the Fort Carson area of responsibility regardless of assignment. This area includes Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever SFB and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station.

All uniformed Armed Forces personnel are prohibited from entering the following areas and establishments within Colorado Springs and surrounding areas.

Violators may be subject to adverse administrative action or punishment under the UCMJ, Article 92 (Failure to Obey a Lawful General Order or Regulation).

Peterson dorms receive new CAC locks

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — A new common access card security system is replacing physical keys for all dorm residents at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado. The project was officially completed at the end of June 2021. Airmen and Guardians can expect to begin using the new system by mid-August.

Increased security is a key benefit of the new system. Dorm managers can now trace if someone has tried to enter a room they have no access to, and record the event.

Dorm residents will now be able to scan their CAC to gain access to their rooms, eliminating the need for individual keys.

Residents will also be able to access day

rooms, laundry facilities and any other areas deemed necessary. Additionally, dorm managers can now remotely open any door if needed, reducing the issues of key control or lost keys.

“We use this system here at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station in a different manner, but it is [also already] used at Fort Carson and other Air Force bases,” said Jeffery Hamilton, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron operations flight chief. “This is now like a hotel key found at most locations around the world, as a physical key has become a thing of the past.”

The 2.2 million-dollar project was contracted through Tribal 1, with contract support provided through the 21st Contracting Squadron.

SECDEF requests mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for military

WASHINGTON, D.C. — By mid-September, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III will request a waiver from President Joe Biden to make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for service members, Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby said Aug. 9.

Austin released a message to the troops saying that after consultations with senior civilian and military officials, making vaccinations mandatory is the best way forward. More than 73 percent of active-duty personnel have received at least one shot of the vaccines to date.

President Biden replied almost immediately.

“I strongly support Secretary Austin’s message to the force today on the Department of Defense's plan to add the COVID-19 vaccine to the list of required vaccinations for our service members not later than mid-September,” Biden said in a message released by the White House. “Secretary Austin and I share an unshakable commitment to making sure our troops have every tool they need to do their jobs as safely as possible. These vaccines will save lives. Period. They are safe.

They are effective. Over 350 million shots have been given in the United States alone.

Being vaccinated will enable our service

members to stay healthy, to better protect their families, and to ensure that our force is ready to operate anywhere in the world.”

The Food and Drug Administration is expected to give full approval to the vaccines, possibly by the end of the month, Kirby said.

If that happens, Austin will immediately add the vaccines to the mandatory military list, Kirby said.

The services have time to plan how they will implement the program, and they have been working on how they will vaccinate the rest of the active and reserve component.

Kirby said there is no shortage of vaccine and the department does not think this will be a limiting factor.

A full third of Austin’s message to the force urged service members not to wait: To get the vaccine right away.

“You can consider this memo, not just a warning order to the services, but to the troops themselves,” Kirby said. “We certainly hope that they will take advantage of the opportunity to get the vaccines now that they are available to them on a voluntary basis. That’s obviously the potential effect that we’d like to see achieved as a result of the secretary’s message. But if they don’t, eventually we’re going to get to a mandatory sort of regimen and we'll take care of it then.”

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Air Force Col. David Wilson, 21st Mission Support Group commander, traveled to the 21st Security Forces Squadron for a one day “deployment” as a temporary Defender at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, July 22, 2021.

By going into the field and putting himself in the shoes of the people he leads, Wilson experienced what it is truly like to serve a day as a Defender.

The 21st SFS falls under the responsibility of the 21st MSG and is responsible for the overall security of the people and property on Peterson SFB and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, Colorado. The squadron has many facilities on Peterson, including the visitor control center, main SF facility and armory, military working dog facility, plans/programs, reports and analysis, investigations and anti-terrorism, two logistics and mobility buildings, and a base defense operations center.

Wilson’s deployment to the 21st SFS began with gearing up and acquiring all of the necessary equipment for his day as a Defender. He put on his body armor and checked out his M-18 pistol prior to leaving the squadron headquarters. On-duty Defenders wear body armor to protect themselves from fast, low-surface-area attacks, such as gun fire or knifes.

Before and after checking a weapon out of the armory, Defenders ensure the weapon is safe and free of ammunition.

They do this by clearing the weapon in a device called a bullet trap and putting the weapon on safe.

No matter what the weather is, rain, shine, hot or cold, Defenders are posted at the West [Main] Gate 24/7 to protect the base and it’s occupancy from any outside threats attempting

to enter the installation. Once he was properly equipped to perform his duties, Wilson went to work as an entry controller at the gate. Defenders on gate duty use handheld identification scanners to verify base access authority for military members, dependents, base workers and DoD civilians.

During his training Wilson learned to properly use a radar gun to track the speed of on-base traffic. The base has a 30 mile-per-hour speed limit on most streets and a 15 mph limit on residential streets. Speeding on base can result in tickets and loss of on-base driving privileges.

Wilson joined Airmen from the 21st SFS in a gate runner exercise on the base. Defenders regularly perform exercises to ensure their team is sharp and responsive. Wilson and the Defenders quickly responded to two suspects who drove straight through the gate, gaining unauthorized entry to the installation.

Defenders used their training and strong communication skills to quickly track down and apprehend the suspects.

“The reality is I’m not gonna stand a post tomorrow, but it helps me,” said Wilson. “There’s not a day that goes by that we’re [21st MSG leadership] not talking to somebody about something I just learned. I get to say this is what my folks are going through, this is how they operate. While it is enjoyable, it’s not just for fun, it helps me advocate better for you.”

Leadership working side-by-side with the people they lead can help them understand exactly what their people are going through and help them gain useful perspective on how policies and decisions affect the individuals and organizations they lead.

Wilson will be visiting the 21st Force Support Squadron, 21st Contracting Squadrons, 21st Communications Squadron, 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron and the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Having served in the U.S. Air Force for nearly two years, and being stationed at Schriever Space Force Base for a year and seven months, Senior Airman Christopher Thao, 50th Communications Squadron network operations technician, has found himself already being interviewed for his efforts and accomplishments. Soon after Thao enlisted, he quickly discovered the defining benefits of the Air Force.

“Before I joined the Air Force, I was kind of a free spirit,” said Thao. “I just wanted to hang out and have fun in life, you know? However, that quickly left me feeling lost and wanting more.”

In just a short period of service, Thao found direction within the air service branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.

“I’m part of the backbone of the garrison,” Thao said.

“Our specified work is not at the forefront, but we have our hands in almost everything on base … from security forces scanning IDs at the gates to enabling force support squadron clearance processing, accessibility to payroll services, and to duty phone support for commanders, chiefs, first sergeants and department heads. Our list goes on and on.”

Thao grew up as one of six kids in Warwick — a city in “The Ocean State” of Rhode Island — and is the child of Vietnam War survivors.

“A lot of my family members died in the Vietnam War,” said Thao. “Through their sacrifices — running [in] jun-

gles, getting shot at, evading mines [when] my dad was only 12 years old — he, my father, came to America. Not knowing a word of English at all, and subjected to racism, [my father] was able to strive ahead, get a degree and a good job — allowing us, my siblings and I, to experience the American Dream of him coming from nothing and us living with something.”

The mission of the Peterson-Schriever Garrison is to evolve space and cyberspace warfighting superiority through integrated and innovative operations.

“We contribute to the success of the Space Force and Air Force mission of the Peterson-Schriever Garrison by maintaining and modernizing Schriever Space Force Base’s cybersecurity posture and space mission systems, therefore supporting the newly, [and] overall larger, P-S GAR’s objectives,” said Thao.

With the example of his father coming to the U.S. and making something of himself — and with the knowledge of his elders sacrificing so much for that — Thao, himself, is now making an impact upon his squadron, his base, and for the garrison.

“Senior Airman Thao is a very important member in making the mission of the P-S GAR run effectively,” said Staff Sgt. Vincent Washington, 50th CS network operations supervisor. “Thao’s work ethic and attention to detail in his key duties enable success across each installation.”

Thao works with the Department of Defense’s main interconnected computer networks, SIPRNet and NIPRNet: the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network and Nonclassified Internet Protocol Router Network, respectively

— the latter of the two is for nonsecure communications.

“Specifically, as a network administrator, his contributions keep our networks safe and available by maintaining and defending NIPR and SIPR networks so that the P-S GAR can effectively maintain air, space and cyberspace superiority,” said Washington. “His latest accomplishment was leading the virtual desktop interface implementation base-wide. Due to Senior Airman Thao’s perpetual contributions, he was awarded senior airman below-thezone this year.”

Senior airman below-the-zone, or BTZ, is a program that allows those with the rank of airman to promote to senior airman six months early.

“I appreciate Senior Airman Thao’s positive attitude and motivation,” said Washington. “Everything he sets his mind to he does to the best of his ability. He sets a great example for every member in the work section and we are proud to have him as a part of the 50th Communications Squadron.”

Thao thought he was fine as a free spirit, but he ultimately wanted more. Thao felt lost and wanted discipline and direction, which isn’t something people often admit to — but for Thao, who set aside his pride, it paid-off in dividends.

“I’m very happy with my decision to join. I’m very certain I’m in a much better place than I would be without the Air Force,” said Thao. “I was a ‘free spirit,’ as I like to say, and I was making a decent living, but I needed a disciplined path to live, work and thrive within — and the Air Force gave me that.”

New Boston Space Force Station replaces antenna

NEW BOSTON SPACE FORCE STATION, N.H. — The 23rd Space Operations Squadron, located at New Boston Space Force Station, New Hampshire, received a new radome and tracking system for their 13-meter antenna on July 19, 2021.

A radome is an inflatable cover made from a radio-transparent material intended to protect a radar antenna and its components from harsh elements. They resemble giant golf balls.

Without the ensured 360-degree protection from the radome, moreover, the antenna’s physical orientation would be visible to any passersby and onlookers. The antenna would be vulnerable to conditions such as hurricanes, snow storms, ultra-violet radiation, water, corrosion and other kinds of deterioration.

Radomes have a minimum 20-year life expectancy for proper protection of equipment. For the 23 SOPS to upgrade the antenna’s automated Remote Tracking System to a hybrid RTS they needed to remove the radome protecting their antenna to access and replace the tracking system. With the antenna’s radome cover already removed for the equipment’s refurbishment, the 23 SOPS turned the upgrade into an opportunity, replacing the aging 17-year-old radome.

“The antennas at New Boston provide access to space that allows for the command and control, and health and safety of over 200 satellites a day,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. David Zesinger, 23 SOPS commander. “These satellites serve a variety of missions like weather, communications, intel and navigation.

Without New Boston’s coverage, the satellite control network would lose a significant portion of their ability to service the space assets that America and our allies depend on every day for our modern way of life.”

Without the 23 SOPS replacing and upgrading equipment to keep it fresh, up-to-date and ready to gather information, they would not be able to provide U.S. Space Command with critical satellite command and control capability to the more than 190 Department of Defense operations that keep us safe and protect our way of life.

Air Force Materiel Command takes on role as servicing major command for Space Force Staff Report AFMC Public Affairs

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — Air Force Materiel Command is adding on a new role as the designated Servicing Major Command for the U.S. Space Force.

Recently the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force took steps to define AFMC’s role as the designated Servicing MAJCOM for the U.S. Space Force. These actions included a memorandum of understanding providing a strategic overview of support provided to the USSF by the USAF. And a programming plan outlining the functional support AFMC will provide to Airmen assigned to USSF who are supporting USSF installations and missions.

This unique and first-time Servicing MAJCOM structure was created to ensure Airmen assigned to the USSF receive the same force development opportunities, functional and administrative support as those at USAF Installations.

The USSF derives almost all its support from the USAF and its Airmen, including infrastructure, logistics, se-

curity, medical services, and a host of other common capabilities to support the mission.

AFMC, as the Servicing MAJCOM, will accomplish the roles and responsibilities traditionally performed by a MAJCOM for the Airmen providing base operating support for USSF installations. These MAJCOM functions typically include, but are not limited to, providing policy guidance, interpretation and, where applicable, waiver authority; professional development opportunities and guidance; developmental team representation; and functional-specific roles. Approximately 8,000 USAF Airmen assigned to USSF installations and units will be serviced

by AFMC. Airmen at USSF installations will continue to be serviced by their local Military Personnel Flight and Civilian Personnel Office; and the Air Force Personnel Center will continue to provide service to all Airmen at USSF installations. The primary difference will be when most Airmen at USSF installations need MAJCOM interaction, Headquarters AFMC 2-letter staff will assist them. Their MAJCOM Functional Manager will be at HQ AFMC.

USSF Guardians are not affected. Professional development and functional-specific support for USSF Guardians will be provided through the USSF Field Commands.

The Department of the Air Force is working toward a criteria-based initial operational capability in Fall 2021, working toward full operational capability in Fall 2022.

“We’re honored to be able to provide support to the outstanding Airmen who are helping advance the U.S. Space Force mission,” said AFMC Commander Gen. Arnold W. Bunch, Jr. “We’re all in to ensure the success of the space mission and the Airmen assigned to the U.S. Space Force.”

The USSF mission is to organize, train, and equip space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. USSF responsibilities include developing Guardians, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power, and organizing space forces to present to U.S. Combatant Commands.

This action aligns with the USSF organizational structure for echelons below the service headquarters and is designed to support a mission-focused force.

SAFETY 411 Heat-Related Illnesses Heat Cramps: Are painful, brief muscle cramps.

Muscles may spasm or jerk involuntarily. Heat cramps can occur during exercise or work in a hot environment or begin a few hours later.

Heat Exhaustion: There are two types of heat exhaustion. 1. Water depletion- Signs include excessive thirst, weakness, headache, and loss of consciousness. 2. Salt depletion- Signs include nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, and dizziness.

Heat Stroke: Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. Heat stroke can kill or cause damage to the brain and other internal organs.

Heat stroke results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures — usually in combination with dehydration — which leads to failure of the body’s temperature control system.

Safe Work Practices to Prevent HeatRelated Illnesses: • Allow for acclimatization to a hot environment before any strenuous work begins. It takes roughly two weeks for an individual to acclimate to a hot environment.

• Drink plenty of water during strenuous activities especially in hot environments. An average person sweats between roughly 27 oz. to 47 oz. per hour during intense labor. To put that amount into perspective, an average water bottle holds 16.9oz.

• Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors where there is AC.
