resno Air National Guard Base, Calif. — A couple months ago, who would have ever dreamed how our lives would change? All around us, news of the novel coronavirus dominates the information we take in on a daily basis. Many of our day-to-day routines have altered dramatically. Anxiety and worry are commonplace as people think about the days ahead.

It is no surprise that our children are feeling worried too. Our children take their cues from the adults around them. Therefore, as parents and adult caregivers, we must find ways to reduce our own stress and anxiety. As adults, when we are calm, it is much easier to reduce the fears of our children.

Dr. Dawn O’Mally from the National Alliance on Mental Illness suggests the following steps to ease COVID-19 anxiety for families, especially children:

Step 2: Establish a Routine COVID-19 is disrupting our daily lives in a lot of ways.

Kids may be going to school online, for example, while parents work from home.

Although the amount of impact is different for each person, everyone is still affected to one degree or another.

Creating a daily family routine can help adults and children alike regain a new sense of “normal.”

“Stay positive. Talk about

all the things people are doing together to help each other and stay healthy.”

Step 1: Get the Facts As the saying goes, “knowledge is power.” In any situation, one way to reduce stress is to know the facts. With COVID-19, though, it seems like information is everywhere.

What we know about this new virus changes quickly, so it’s hard to know what’s true and what’s not.

To find facts about COVID-19, and not become overwhelmed, it’s a good idea to stick with just one or two trusted resources. Facts often can help reduce stress, especially for children with anxiety. If your child is fearful

• Copy the school schedule by switching activities every 30-40 minutes or so.

At “lunch time,” eat lunch together.

Step 3: Engage in Self-Care It’s always important for kids to get enough sleep, eat healthy food and engage in physical exercise. During times of anxiety, these self-care activities become even more essential.

You may want to think about the types of activities that relax your child when they experience other stressful events.

What do you do to relieve fears at the beginning of a school year, for example?

Build those same soothing activities, as well as self-care actions, into your family routine.

Step 4: Stay Connected “Social distancing” measures are meant to keep people healthy. However, children may be sad or even mad about needing to limit their in-person interactions with friends and family.

To keep kids from feeling alone, help

them stay connected with others in new ways. Use technology like Skype, Zoom, Facetime or other apps to set up “virtual playdates.” Let friends play a game or eat together. Go on a neighborhood web page and let kids shop online for groceries for an elderly neighbor. Or, just set up regular times for your children to talk with their friends on the phone.

The same holds for adults, as well.

Meet virtually with business groups, friends or family regularly. Don’t let physical distancing keep you away from your social support networks.

Let kids know that even though there’s still much to learn about COVID-19, it’s up to the adults to figure it out, and they don’t need to worry. Stay positive.

Talk about all the things people are doing together to help each other and stay healthy.

It’s a conversation you may need to have many times over the coming days.

But one of the best ways to reduce anxiety is simply to make time to talk.

Staying fit at home during COVID-19

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — With 50th Force Support Squadron’s fitness center, indoor track and various workout locations closed here indefinitely due to COVID-19, Airmen require alternatives to remain fit while avoiding bad habits.

Gov. Jared Polis implemented a stay-in-place order March 25 suggesting people leave their homes only for essential items and stay six feet away from others. On March 29, President Donald Trump extended social distancing guidelines until April 30.

Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and if you want a snack, limit your snacking to once a day. If you keep a food chart and write down everything you eat, it might help. Having something visual to see how much you are eating will hopefully make you hesitate when grabbing unneeded snacks.”

Ken Wright, 4th Space Operations Squadron ground engineer, developed a routine and continues to exercise despite gym closures.

He previously joined a swim team to help fulfill the requirements of the Lazyman Triathlon — a month-long event where participants run 26.2 miles, swim 2.4 miles and cycle 112 miles — but had to go another route after the pools closed.

“In the morning I make sure to go for a run and in the afternoon, after the kids are done with school, I like to go out for a bike ride with them to make sure they get out of the house,” Wright said. “It’s important for me to have that routine to develop consistency at home.”

To maintain motivation, Wright set a goal to run 200 miles in April.

“This has really rekindled my love for running,” he said. “I started logging my mileage late last month, so we’ll see if I’m able to achieve my goal.”

A&FRC stays ready during pandemic

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron’s Airman and Family Readiness Center stays ready to provide Airmen with their helping services, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The services still offered by the A&FRC include: • Information and Referral • Air Force Aid Society • Family Readiness — coordinated via email/phone • Transition Assistance Program — coordinated via email/phone • Survivor Benefit Program — coordinated via email/phone • Relocation Program — coordinated via email/phone • Personal Work Life (Key Spouse) — via email/phone “[COVID-19] has altered the in-person connection we have with the people who come to the center for assistance,” said Andrea Hernandez, A&FRC flight chief. “Now we make those connections by phone or email.”

Despite this obstacle, the flight is dedicated to providing Airmen and their families with the highest quality of care possible. “[You] are not alone,” Hernandez

said. “This situation is impacting everyone. There are so many resources available. Reach out if you are in need.”

The A&FRC is available for limited services via appointment from 8 a.m.

— 4 p.m. Monday — Friday.

“The services provided by the A&FRC are a vital part of any disaster scenario,” said Johnathan Gamer, 50th Force Support Squadron casualty assistance representative.

“From assisting with financial struggles to members transitioning out of the military, as well as, helping members and their families through crises.”

One of the primary programs that can be used to help families through this time of uncertainty is the Air Force Aid Society. AFAS is the official charity of the U.S. Air Force to meet the needs of Airmen and their families since 1942.

“We strive to provide peace of mind and support at all times, but especially during these uncertain ones,” Gamer said. “Just knowing that services never stop and that we will do anything we can in the office still hopefully gives families some comfort.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2nd Space Operations Squadron hosted a digital promotion ceremony to recognize the accomplishments of the squadron’s Airmen April 1.

The squadron hosted the event digitally to protect the health of its Airmen through physical distancing to defend against COVID-19.

“Being promoted is a huge accomplishment, both professionally and personally, and the promotees deserved to be recognized for their incredible achievements despite the current situation,” said Lt. Col. Stephen Toth, 2nd Space Operations Squadron commander. “Despite being physically distanced from each other right now, it doesn’t mean we need to be socially distant. We saw this as an opportunity to bring the team together and celebrate.”

The squadron hosted the event digitally to protect the health of its Airmen through physical distancing to defend against COVID-19.

The 2nd Space Operations Squadron hosted a digital promotion ceremony April 1, 2020, to recognize the accomplishments of its Airmen. Leadership encouraged Airmen to invite family and friends to celebrate with them digitally.

The 50th Space Wing typically hosts a promotion ceremony at the beginning of each month at the base fitness center to recognize Airmen across the installation. Those ceremonies were postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19. The postponement of base ceremonies inspired the 2nd SOPS leadership to host their own ceremony to recognize their Airmen’s accomplishments.

“Traditions are important, so it is even more important in these uncertain times to reinforce them,” Toth said. “It helps us stay connected to each other, the unit, our purpose, and it reminds us that we still have many things to celebrate despite all the negativity that we are seeing around the world and [in] our country right now.”

The promotion ceremony recognized three Airmen in the squadron: Maj. Karou Elliot, 2nd SOPS assistant director of operations.

“This is a big accomplishment for all of us,” Wood said. “It’s nice to be acknowledged and celebrate this with our family and coworkers. I couldn’t have done this without my 2nd SOPS family.”

The ceremony lasted about 35 minutes. Leadership encouraged the nominees to invite their families to join the digital promotion and recognize their accomplishments together.

“Even when things in the world are chaotic, the United States Space Force will find innovative ways to persevere both operationally and relationally,” said Toth. “[COVID-19] can’t stop the 2nd Space Operations Squadron from doing what’s best for our people and our mission.

PUBLIC NOTICE REQUEST FOR COMMUNITY RESPONSE REGARDING ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION ACTIVITIES PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule #3 (UCMR 3) sampling results in public wells prompted additional sampling of private and municipal off-base drinking water wells near Peterson Air Force Base (AFB). Treatment systems have been installed at private and municipal wells used as drinking water sources. In addition, Peterson AFB conducted a Preliminary Assessment to identify any potential on base sources. Based on the results the Preliminary Assessment and follow on Site Investigations, it was confirmed that Peterson AFB had PFOS/PFOA impacts to groundwater. These recent Air Force Environmental Restoration Program (ERP) investigations have identified four sites that warrant further evaluation.

The Air Force’s ERP provides for the environmental cleanup of contamination whose release is attributable to the Air Force, including immediate actions taken to remove imminent threats to human health and the environment. Public involvement is a key aspect of the ERP and is the reason for this notice.

Peterson AFB is seeking public input on its ERP to enable meaningful community involvement and to address community needs, concerns, and expectations through face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews, and an online survey.
