Air Force selects intel couple for E8 promotions in Space Force

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE, Colo. — Air Force officials selected 1,194 master sergeants for promotion to senior master sergeant, two of whom recently transferred into the U.S. Space Force as intelligence analysts and call each other husband and wife.

“If I weren’t dual service, I don’t know if we would have a bond like that.”

Master sergeants Brianna and Rory Fields both serve as signal analysts by trade and have since they graduated from the same technical school 11 years ago.

Following technical school, they were engaged and married a year later.

In the decade that followed the two have served in Alaska and Georgia, often times competing against each other for awards and promotion recommendations.

“We were always in the same chain of command which was hard,” said Brianna, who currently serves as the Joint Task Force-Space Defense additional duty first sergeant at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo.

“But I will say as competitive as I am, if I have to lose to anyone I want to lose to Rory because I know he’s an amazing analyst and senior NCO.” Serving as a dual service couple can be challenging but it has its rewards too.

but I’m honestly pretty shocked and a little nervous — I want to make sure I do the rank justice and do the best things I can with the new responsibility and influence.”

Her husband shares her humbleness.

“I’m still a little shocked about the whole thing,” Rory said. “It means a great deal to be selected for promotion. It comes as a statement the Space Force has faith in us to be able to develop personnel and make teams better.”

“Space and this assignment was something new and something that would hopefully give us a bit of a breather from the deployed-in-place operations tempo we were experiencing,” she said. “However, after my arrival, I quickly became not only fascinated with the mission, but I also loved the different mix of people I got the opportunity to work with, including multiple career specialties, services and the entire intelligence community.”

This passion for space compelled both to apply and get selected to transfer into the Space Force, which they did in a ceremony in February.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said. “And to be able to help shape and grow a new service was a chance I couldn’t pass up.”

“The number one reason I decided to transfer to the Space Force was because I hoped to be able to shape how this new service looks and how intelligence is done in space,” she said. “I think this promotion will afford me the opportunities to shape things on a greater scale.”

While many think opposites attract, the Fields seem to be in-sync on all levels. Both are described as hard chargers by supervisors, both have filled first sergeant roles for their organizations, both are excited about the space missions they support and both are looking forward to celebrating their upcoming 10th anniversary together.

The Fields are among 13 signal analysts selected for promotion to senior master sergeant across the Air Force this cycle, and eight Guardians across different intelligence specialties.

Military, civil service career is a team sport

ORT WORTH, Texas — When I put my uniform on for the last time in December 2019 at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., I had mixed feelings. I was proud of my more than 28 years of service but I was also a little sad that I was no longer going to serve in uniform.

It was a Friday and I wore my daughter’s U.S. Air Force cadet red squadron shirt. The shirt’s color also happened to be the same as our “Friday colors” at the 940th Air Refueling Wing, so that made it even more memorable.

I was fortunate I still had the opportunity to continue in the civil service field for an Air Force Reserve Command wing as a process manager. I was excited about that opportunity, particularly because my spouse, Brett, is also a member of the career civil service within the same organization. Service, both military and civilian, is definitely a team sport!

During my 28-plus year military career, I was able to serve in all three components of the greatest Air Force in the world, with the world’s greatest Airmen. Brett and I met while stationed in Japan on my first operational C-130 flying assignment.

We enjoyed living and seeing the sights in Japan and then moved back stateside to Little Rock AFB, Arkansas, where our first daughter, now-Cadet 3rd Class Nicole, was born.

Her arrival changed our lives and we began the transition to civilian-Reserve Component life. During that transition period, still flying as a pilot with a small child, I relied on some important teammates in order to be able to serve as a formal training unit instructor pilot.

“The mentors, bosses, peers and colleagues I worked with over 28-plus years were

greatly influential to my service.”

Nicole’s babysitters, who kept her overnight due to my crazy flying schedule, were amazing. I could not have succeeded without them. Once Nicole and I moved to Kansas City, where Brett had a job in construction and I was hired by the Missouri continued page 10 | LEADERSHIP

AF recognizes JTF-SD major with STEM award

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Air Force named Maj. David Archer, Joint Task Force-Space Defense Capabilities and Integration lead, the 2020 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Award winner for the mid-career military category.

Archer, a Dayton, Ohio native, served with the National Reconnaissance Office when he was nominated for the award. In that position, he led 250 government and contractor team members building a state of the art mission payload.

“My engineering degrees armed me with the ability to deal with problems across multiple engineering disciplines helping to lead the team through the critical design phase which finalized the payload design for production,” Archer said. “Along with my outstanding team, we solved engineering issues with composites, micro-electronics, structural design, electromagnetics, optics and systems engineering.

Delivery of this mission payload is critical to the fielding of a major intelligence capability which will provide 24/7 assured imagery for combatant commanders across all stages of conflict.”

Despite appreciating the challenge of his NRO work, Archer was surprised by the award.

“I am thankful. These are so competitive and I’m proud to share this with my family who has always been so supportive of me throughout my career and especially my daughter who is very interested in science, engineering and math,” he said.

Like Archer’s 8-year-old daughter, his STEM focus started at a young age when he started tinkering with electronics, building antennas and working for his father’s commercial communication business — think two-way radios and such.

“I grew up with it all around me, it was a natural interest,” said Archer.

Academy, figuring he’d enjoy designing and building aircraft weapons systems, not knowing at his commission in 2008, he’d also be instrumental in building systems that orbit the Earth.

“The Academy was very challenging. The combination of academics with physical and military training filled my time and attention,” he said. “STEM degrees are challenging so I

always recommend to people they need to find an area they are passionate about otherwise it will be that much harder.”

Archer’s time with the NRO coupled with his STEM passion prepared the developmental engineering officer for his current position with the JTF-SD. “I have worked in multiple program offices, so I can speak the language, I understand their objectives and I can translate that for our operators here,” he said. “It’s the same type of job but now I am on the other side of the fence, now I’m working the user/operator needs.”

His leaders appreciate his experience as well.

“Major Archer is our cornerstone for protect and defend capability on-boarding and integration at JTF-SD,” said his supervisor Lt. Col. Derek Reimer, Capabilities and Resource Integration director. “His program office experience, technical expertise and leadership ability are the perfect combination for this extremely challenging job.

I was not surprised at all to hear he won this Air Forcelevel recognition. He has been hitting it out of the park since day one.”

Archer appreciates the opportunity to apply his education on a daily basis.

“We get to manage systems to build a better future,” Archer said. “We look at how to integrate new systems and figure out what our operators on the operations floor need to support the current and future space defense mission.”

The office of the Department of the Air Force Chief Scientist and Deputy Assistant Secretary Science, Technology and Engineering announced the winners of the awards in early March, which included a list of 17 other individual and four team awards.

Individual winners receive a trophy honoring contributions to the Department of the Air Force, a certificate, a three-day pass or time off award for military and civilians respectively, and may wear the Department of the Air Force Recognition Ribbon for military members or Lapel Pin for civilians.

50th CES wins environmental award The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, received its first Gen. Thomas D. White Environmental Award for Cultural Resource Management Feb. 19, 2021. Among the 50th CES’s achievements of the past two years were a complete rewrite of its Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan to capture new data and best practices. The base’s cultural resources team also implemented a new Installation Tribal Relations Plan and established strong working relationships with Native American Tribes and the state of Colorado. For the first time in nearly 30 years, walking surveys of the entire installation for archaeological and architectural resources were conducted, discovering dozens of new sites and artifacts from both historic and prehistoric eras. These initiatives enabled the Cultural Resources Program team to remain compliant with the National Historic Preservation Act as Schriever AFB undergoes rapid development and construction.

Vacation includes unexpected intervention

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— For some, no matter where they are they always find a way to be unexpectedly useful or instrumental to some critical operation.

That appears to be the case for Master Sgt. Ryan Herter, Joint Task Force-Space Defense Current Operations senior enlisted leader, who recently vacationed with his family in Hawaii.

“We were celebrating my wife, Jessika, and my eight year wedding anniversary as well as trying to recreate some historical family photos,” he said.

Along for the ride were his 6-year-old daughter along with Jessika’s parents and aunt. The family shares an appreciation for history and set out to recreate photos of Jessika’s great grandparents in similar spots around Pearl Harbor during World War II. “I’m pursuing my master’s degree in American Military History,’” he said.

“At one point in the vacation, I went to visit a former coworker in [Indo-Pacific Command]. He showed me how the military made the conscious decision to keep some of the damage inflicted by the Japanese during World War II.” On the way to visit Turtle Bay, Herter noticed a car ahead sway off the road and started riding the guard rail.

No one was injured in the incident and the Herter family was able to get the man the medical attention he needed.

it, but I drove up alongside and could see the driver was slumped over the wheel,” he said.

The driver then bounced off a bridge and crossed the oncoming traffic lane before resting on the other shoulder.

“My mother-in-law, Paula, is a nurse so she went with me to check on the driver while my wife called 9-1-1,” he said. “We could see the car was still in drive. I started knocking on the window and tried to get him to unlock the doors. When he finally came to, he attempted to drive again.”

At this time, some locals who had also witnessed the accident turned around and returned to park their car in front of the stopped vehicle. They provided Jessika the location information for emergency responders and were able to pull the emergency brake.

“While they were able to reach the emergency brake from the passenger side, I was finally able to remove the keys from the ignition so he wouldn’t be able to attempt to drive again,” Herter said. “Paula, then took over and started to assess his condition. We

just kept talking to him to try to keep him coherent until first responders arrived.”

Based on the conversations at the scene, it’s believed the driver was experiencing a diabetic attack which can lead to incoherence, becoming anxious, fatigue and weak as well as shock.

“When I hear stories like this I’m always impressed. It seems like a simple act of looking out for someone yet I’m sure there were a number of cars that just drove on by,” said Maj. Benjamin Herring, National Space Defense Enter deputy chief of current operations. “Undoubtedly if the man had resumed driving he would have placed himself and others at grave risk.”

Following the dynamic situation, the Herter family continued on their way to Turtle Bay and to see other island sights and stage their recreated generational photos.

For Herter, this situation resolved much better than the one he experienced in Colorado Springs nearly two decades earlier.

“I was driving home from Schriever and came upon an overturned car off Barnes by the then Sky Sox Stadium,” he said. “It appears they were drag racing before they overturned. Unfortunately, when I climbed into the vehicle to check the driver I took his pulse and realized he was deceased.

Similar to my recent encounter in Hawaii, the vehicle was still running and I was able to kill the ignition. I found the passenger ejected and provided first aid.”

Herter directed the people gathered to call 9-1-1 and attended to the injured passenger until emergency responders arrived on scene.

“I think the military has trained me to the point where my instinct now is to react,” said Herter. “I am happy I was there to help.”

Faces of Space: Nathan Lancor

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — What started out as a conversation with friends in high school, turned into an unexpected journey for Nathan Lancor, Space Delta 6, 21st Space Operations Squadron chief of security. He didn’t just find himself leaving his hometown of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, but found himself in the midst of a whole new frontier: the U.S. Space Force.

“I was hanging out with friends, and one said he wanted to join the [U.S.] Air Force and work on jets,” said Lancor.

“He asked if anyone wanted to go to the recruiter with him. A month later I was going to basic training.”

Lancor started his U.S. Air Force career in security forces, and soon rediscovered his love for woodworking and building after cross training into civil engineering. His shop would often volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, cleaning yards, building wheel chair ramps and reroofing houses. The skills he learned through his job and volunteer work evolved into a personal passion. He often spends his free time on projects around the house, his favorite being the night tables he made from reclaimed materials.

“I’m currently remodeling my master bedroom and bathroom, so they might be my new favorite once it’s done,” said Lancor. “Overall I enjoy building or remodeling something; turning it from old to new.”

After 12 years on active duty, Lancor decided to leave the USAF. He accepted a job with the American Red Cross as a disaster program manager, supervising

and coordinating disaster relief efforts, and providing hands-on emergency response.

“The human kindness and compassion I saw is something that I always carry with me,” said Lancor.

As impactful as that job was, Lancor found that he still had a desire to be a part of military life.

“I originally didn’t intend to join the [U.S.] Army Reserve,” said Lancor. “But after a year of being out I really missed

the comradery. The reserves had the best options for me based on job options and locations of reserve centers.”

Shortly after joining the reserves in 2011, Lancor decided he wanted to serve in a full-time capacity again, but as a government civil servant. Originally taking a job with the U.S. Army Reserve 63rd Readiness Division in Mountain View, California, he took a job with the 21st SOPS at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California in 2019.

Traveling from California to Colorado Springs for reserve weekends, managing a full-time job and keeping up with his kids traveling sports teams is no simple task for Lancor. He says it’s all possible thanks to his wife and children and their understanding helps him to maintain balance.

“Life is like a seesaw,” said Lancor.

“Sometimes certain parts of life are heavier, but then when [heavier] parts lessen, I have more time to spend on hobbies. Ultimately, being a father and a husband is the middle of the seesaw, the grounding force that allows me to do what I do.”

Being a part of the USSF is just another adventure for Lancor. He explained how awesome it is to be a part of history and that he’s excited to see what the future holds for his new service.

“My hope and belief is that the USSF will be a leader of all nations in the space arena just like the Air Force, Army and Navy,” said Lancor. “It is human nature to explore, and the world isn’t getting any bigger, so naturally we reach to space for that exploration. As exploration continues to grow, the U.S. needs to protect itself and the Space Force was created to make that happen.”

Air National Guard, our team grew by including child care providers who were also amazing.

Brett, however, was the MVP — working long construction industry hours while taking care of Nicole when I was flying or deployed.

My second daughter, Molly, joined us while we lived in the Kansas City area during my first Active Guard Reserve tour. The AGR program opened new opportunities to us and we walked through the door, which took us to Headquarters AFRC in Middle Georgia.

This move was career-changing for both Brett and myself. There he was able to join the civil service and I was able to gain valuable experience which ultimately led to amazing leadership opportunities, ultimately retiring as a flying wing commander. We both had personal and professional teams during this time who supported our development and sustained careers.

The mentors, bosses, peers and colleagues I worked with over 28-plus years were greatly influential to my service. Our extended families also helped when Air Force life became overwhelming.

Most of all, it was Brett and the kids who allowed my service to be possible. Without their support, including moving three times in a three-year period, none of it would have been possible. Service takes an entire team and I want to give a big thank you to all of those teammates — past and present!

During her more than 28 year military career, Col. (ret.) Stephanie Williams was able to serve in all three components of the greatest Air Force in the world in various roles to include a formal training unit instructor pilot as well as a flying wing commander. It was her family, friends and support system which allowed her to serve-and still serve-as a civil servant.

— Col. James Smith, Peterson-Schriever Garrison commander, signed a proclamation to begin Month of the Military Child for the garrison on April 2, 2021. Activities for the monthlong celebration include a door decorating contest, a masquerade ball, a gratitude garden and community library grand opening.

In 1986, Defense Secretary Casper Weinberg established April as Month of

the Military Child in order to celebrate military children and the sacrifices they make in order for their loved ones to continue to serve our country. A parent’s military career can be difficult on children; from constantly changing schools and having to make new friends, to saying goodbye to their parents for months on end. This requires an underestimated amount of resiliency and strength.

“The official flower of the military child is the dandelion,” said Moore. “The plant puts down roots almost anywhere, and it’s almost impossible to destroy."

The garrison community is also encouraged to participate in “Purple-Up Day” on April 16. When combining the official colors of each military branch it creates purple; which symbolizes support for military families and children.

The 21st Medical Group will be transitioning from using TRICARE Online (TOL) and Secure Messaging System to MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, April 24. Since Feb. 24, the 21st MDS Immunizations

will begin a temporary hours of operation change.

Until further notice, immunizations will be open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Covid-19 point of testing location The Peterson AFB COVID-19 Point of Testing location will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8-11 a.m. for appointments and tier testing. This time change allows a smoother transition for the afternoon vaccinations. Tuesday and Thursday curative surveillance testing hours are from 8-11 a.m.

Dependent ID extension memo Due to COVID-19, the policy for dependent IDs has changed and allows dependents to use their IDs through June 30, even if they are expired.

There may be some agencies that still request these members with expired IDs to have a copy of the policy memo included with their expired ID as ‘proof’ that their ID is still valid. Air Force Marathon Air and Space Challenge application The Air Force Marathon takes place Sept. 16-19, at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The Air and Space Challenge is an important part of the 2021 USAF Marathon. Each MAJCOM and USSF may field one full marathon team and one half marathon team to participate in the challenge. MAJCOM Teams are open to all Active Duty Airmen within their respective command. The USSF Team is open to all Active Duty Space Force Guardians and Airmen assigned to USSF installations, including the NRO. Application Deadline is June 3, 2021.
