Outdoor Recreation working from home to complete mission

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— While COVID-19 seeks to take the ‘outdoor’ out of 50th Force Support Squadron’s Outdoor Recreation program, they continue to adapt to the changes.

In addition to the pandemic, the new order forced outdoor recreation to cancel numerous trips, classes and other activities to curb the spread of the virus.

“We’ve moved everything so we can work from home,” said Juli Yim, 50th FSS director of outdoor recreation. “Anything involving the RV lot or questions regarding trips, we’re answering from home. We were supposed to have a ski trip, but all of the mountains are closed. We wanted to get it going, but after a while it wasn’t the smart thing to do.”

Some activities outdoors, however, remain an option, following Governor Jared Polis’ shelter-in-place order March 25.

“I’ve gone for walks every day,” Yim said.

“Hiking is good to do and getting out for fresh air is great. As long as people maintain that distance they should be good to go.”

During those activities, per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, staying six feet apart to prevent the spread of the virus remains the expectation.

Other physical activities don’t require Airmen to leave their homes or stray far from their residences.

“I mostly play outside with my dogs and do yard work,” said Braden Prather, 50th FSS outdoor recreation clerk. “I take them for walks, especially since the weather’s been nice. I make sure to play with them outside to keep them occupied.”

Despite social distancing, families can still use multiple avenues for entertainment while remaining at a safe distance.

“That can include popping out the corn hole set,” Yim said. “You can do that with your household unit. At least you’re getting outside and getting some sunshine, which is great for killing the virus.”

OBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. — The cabin fever is building as the family begins to watch the third version of many movie classics on another soup d’ jour streaming service in the living room. Take the Bill Murray classic “Groundhog Day,” a spoof on the February 2 holiday, when Murray’s character, Phil Connors,is forced to live the holiday over and over again. Since Groundhog Day was the infamous day when the Big Apple’s Health Commissioner told everyone to “go about your daily lives” with New York City’s risk low and the city’s preparedness high. This has played out over and over again across America yet economic lessons remain as novel as the virus itself. Here are seven tips to ensure that we make it through this financially intact as a family and stronger as a society.

1. Utilize the checks that will go out to millions of taxpayers to prioritize basic, absolute needs first such as housing, food, transportation and utilities. If you do have a job, this is a great time to start a rainy day or emergency fund. Some of the goals for savings rate right now are 1.50 percent and above. Use targeted gasoline savings to pump prime savings.

2. If you missed the warning signs about an overvalued market in early 2020, are under age 50 and have the bulk of your savings tied up in a TSP or 401(K), don’t try to time the market. Do that if you have a segregated trading account.

Missing the best five days in the market, like we have seen recently you would have missed 35 percent of the markets

nearly 400 percent gain over the last 11 years prior to February 12, 2020, according to Fidelity. Missing the 10 biggest days would have eaten up half of your return. Stay put, the market is at least a little less overpriced than it was at the beginning of the year. It’s all about time in the market and not timing the market.

3. Downturns happen so keep a positive spin on the fact that the negatives in the market’s performance happen less often than the bull markets do and are typically short-lived.

4. Through regular LES or payroll withdrawals, you can be assured of three absolutes, especially if you withdraw money wisely at retirement. Dollar-cost-averaging assures us that we

Team Schriever adapts to fulfill duties

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The COVID-19 pandemic continues to change workflow here, but various squadrons to adapt to accomplish its mission.

The 50th Comptroller Squadron, 50th Force Support Squadron and Airman and Family Readiness Center continue to operate by appointment and the Satellite Dish dining facility remains open for mission essential personnel.

“As soon as we touch one thing, we’re sanitizing it.”

The 50th CPTS, which manages all pay and travel related services, travel claims, bonuses and collection of debts, currently functions with two Airmen.

Senior Airman Sean Musrasrik, 50th CPTS financial operations technician, ensures customers earn the correct pay on time despite current circumstances.

“Whether I’m mission essential or not, I know I play a part in the mission,” he said. “I already knew that I played a part in the mission before COVID-19, but this reinforces to me that I have a purpose here.”

With numerous essential and non-essential personnel working remotely, Musrasrik and the rest of the 50th CPTS go “above and

beyond” to complete their tasks.

“We know finances are a big part of life,” he said. “We do our best to make sure we give them every detail we can. It holds value for at least two of us to be here and provide the best customer support that we can. ” As is the case for the 50th FSS’ Manpower and Personnel Flight, which cut its hours to 8 a.m. — noon in order to limit face-toface contact.

Tech. Sgt. Susan Gonzalez, 50th FSS section chief of customer service and force management, typically guides the flight’s operations and helps Airmen and civilians obtain their common access cards. The MPF adjusted its methods to continue its service.

“Since we moved to appointments only, it’s definitely decreased the amount of people in our lobby,” Gonzalez said. “We usually would have a full lobby. It’s still close quarters because of the nature of getting your picture taken and getting fingerprints, but we’re cleaning every 30 seconds to make sure that everything stays sanitized and is good to go.”

The virus presents challenges to Airmen, but leadership provides methods to keep everyone on base safe.

“We have to be a little more cognizant with people coming in, not just ourselves,” Musrasrik said. “We still maintain our distance and clean where we are. As soon as we touch one thing, we’re sanitizing it. It’s a different lifestyle, but we’re still committed to fulfilling our duties.”

R2D2 activities to protect Schriever

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Space Wing stood up the Rapid Response Decontamination Detail in response to COVID-19 and hosted a training session March 26, in the wing headquarters building.

The training lasted about an hour and highlighted the importance of having a crew on standby to keep the mission essential operations centers clean and functioning.

“It’s a 24/7 team trained and equipped for rapid response to support operations inside the restricted area,” said Capt. James Selix, 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron weapons officer and R2D2 officer in charge.

In order for operations crews to request R2D2 services, a squadron commander must call the team and they have 15-30 minutes to respond and initiate the cleaning operation.

“We’re expecting Airmen do the preventative portion of their cleaning,” Selix said. “We’re not there to do it for them. We are activated when there are folks showing symptoms of COVID-19 or have positive tests.”

The crew has a priority system should they need to deconflict requests.

“We want to be rapid to support operations,” Selix said. “[Airmen] are continuing their missions 24/7 and if their crews are doing deep cleanings, that’s pulling them away from doing supports, contacting satellites or protecting the restricted area.”

The detail will be operating in eight-hour shifts to ensure their 24/7 availability. They will be on standby to provide terminal cleanings and supplies to squadrons as needed.

“This is a new enemy,” Selix said. “This is a new fight for all of us. We’re developing teams that make sense in the fight against COVID-19, it takes all of us building the road as we walk it.”

The crew will have hydrogen-peroxide, disinfectant wipes, protective gear such as goggles, facemasks and boot covers, and cleaning sprays and solutions to ensure the operation floors are sanitized and operational.

“In order to get ahead of this pandemic we need to flatten the curve,” said Capt. Megan Maxwell, 21st Medical Squadron medical operations flight commander. “That is going to come from us working with the squadrons directly.”

Despite the worldwide COVID response, the 50th Space Wing continues to execute its critical operations, making it important to ensure the proper steps are taken to maintain Airmen’s health and well-being.

“Wash your hands, using hand sanitizer and wiping down dirty surfaces are just a few of the things we can do to slow the spread of this virus,” said Maxwell.

This initiative is currently available to 50 SW units, however mission partners can contact Selix to develop a similar capability for their mission essential operations.

Space Force accepts control of

GPS III SATELLITE

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2nd Space Operations Squadron accepted control of GPS III Satellite Vehicle Number 75 March 27 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

The vehicle is the second GPS III satellite to be accepted into the program, but the first to be accepted during a global pandemic.

“We’re continuing to make major strides even while working through this pandemic, and we continue to expand our capability to further the program along,” said Lt. Col Stephen Toth, 2nd SOPS commander. “This is a huge, momentous occasion for us, that we’re reaching this milestone, that our programs are being delivered, that they’re being executed and the systems are performing as expected. Ultimately, we’re all very excited that we’ve accomplished this major milestone in the program’s

history, and we’re very excited for the next things to come.”

The new generation of GPS III vehicles have a 15 year design life and signals that are three times more accurate than the current generation. “[This means users will have] better accuracy anywhere in the world, with a user’s device being able to determine their location more reliably,” said Capt. Ryan Thompson, 2nd SOPS assistant director of operations.

Additionally, the new satellites have eight times improved anti-jam capability, allowing the military warfighter to operate better in contested, degraded, and operationally limited environments.

The vehicles are designed to be forward and backward

compatible, which allows them to adapt to the future while remaining fully adaptable to the previous generation of vehicles.

Eight more GPS III satellites are scheduled to launch from now until 2025.

Despite any challenges that may arise, 2nd SOPS remains focused on the mission and continues to make history in space.

“As we’ve moved forward into the Space Force, we’ve taken a bigger mindset approach toward being warfighters,” said Toth. “What COVID has actually brought out of us is the full understanding of what it is to operate with a warfighter mindset. We may not be at war with an enemy per say, but we are definitely at war with the virus. My job is to ensure we continue to provide position, navigation and timing to the world. And we take that very seriously, so despite the virus, we’ll ensure that our mission continues.”

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIOLACKLAND, Texas — As part of an ongoing contingency response to COVID-19, and with restriction of movement protocols for new recruits already in place at U.S. Air Force basic military training, the service has implemented a revised approach to how recruits enter the training pipeline here.

In order to ensure the health and safety of trainees and instructors and to preserve dorm capacity, new recruits will be brought in based on a four-week repeating cycle that includes stringent restricted movement guidelines, dedicated time for deep cleaning between rotations, resetting the instructor cadre and the testing of an alternate BMT location at Keesler AFB, Miss.

“These changes are part of our operational mindset to fight through COVID-19 and

mitigate force health risks.” https://projecthealingwaters.org Project Healing Waters is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of veterans and active military members with disabilities through introduction to the sport of fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.

All services are at no cost to the participant. Additionally, the organization welcomes volunteers who can help tie flies.

Under the phased plan, normal student loads of 650 to 800 students will report for basic military training during the first two weeks and immediately enter into the 14-day restriction of movement protocol.

Trainees will prepare for full-scale training and complete administrative tasks and limited training objectives, while practicing social distancing and small group contact during the 14 days.

The first week of the initial iteration of the plan began March 17 when 653 recruits reported to basic military training. The next arrival of trainees, planned for March 31, will be rescheduled. From that point onward, approximately 460 trainees will arrive at BMT each week, while implementing COVID-19 mitigation measures. Precautions include deepcleaning dormitories, dining facilities and other BMT infrastructure, in line with CDC guidance, as well as will help reset

Plans are also underway to send 60 trainees to a Keesler AFB-based detachment under the direction of the 737th Training Group to demonstrate proof of concept to generate the force at multiple training locations during contingencies.

“We are deliberately developing options to disperse the delivery of BMT during contingencies to provide surge capacity and introduce agility into the training pipeline construct,” said Maj. Gen. Andrea Tullos, Second Air Force commander. “This will also help provide relief to the military training instructor staff and ease the strain on our BMT infrastructure.”

The contingency option is designed to be implemented along a 180-day surge timeline and is sustainable for longer periods, but is not intended to be an enduring construct with force structure implications, Tullos said.

Additionally, all BMT graduation events remain private and closed to the public, with Thursday graduation ceremonies being livestreamed on the USAF Basic Military Training Facebook page.

“These changes are part of our operational mindset to fight through COVID-19 and mitigate force health risks,” Tullos said “We continue to carefully balance the need to deliver mission ready forces to our operational commanders with the force health protection measures we must responsibly take to preserve the welfare of our families and the extensive network of communities across our nation we call home.”

Located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Keesler AFB is home to the 81st Training Wing, who train, develop and inspire premier warfighters in training for over 160 career field specialty training courses in addition to eight operating locations in the continental United States. The base also is home for the 2nd Air Force and the U.S. Air Force Reserve 403rd Wing. Training more than 28,000 students annually, with an average daily student load of more than 2,700, the 81st TRW is a lead Joint Training Installation, instructing personnel from every military service branch including the U.S. Coast Guard.

The wing also trains civilian federal agency personnel.

AEHF-6 satellite completes protected satellite program

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Advanced Extremely High Frequency vehicle number six launched March 26, completing the planned protected satellite program.

The 4th Space Operations Squadron maintains and commands the protected satellite constellation and will fully integrate AEHF-6 into their family.

“AEHF satellites were engineered to provide global, secure, survivable, jam-resistant communications for the American warfighter and our international partners 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said 2nd Lt. Janelle Rogers, 4th Space Operations Squadron satellite engineer. “They support both strategic and tactical missions.”

Strategic missions include: submarine and bomber report back, integrated tactical warning attack and assessment, emergency action message dissemination, missile defense and warning and near real-time targeting.

Tactical missions include: range extension, fire support, special operations, air defense and joint task force enabling.

“As it stands today, the 4th SOPS protected engineering maintains 10 satellites around the clock, performing nominal tasks during the day and providing on-call support after hours,” Rogers said. “Adding an 11th satellite to the constellation will increase our workload, but we are more than ready and proud to take this on.”

Once AEHF-6 is ready for operational use, the protected satellite program will be complete. This is a process which has taken more than 26 years, since the first Milstar satellite (the first of the protected satellites to go into orbit) launched February 1994.

“It greatly enhances our capability to support the warfighter,” Rogers said. “AEHF operates in the same family of satellites as the Milstar series, but AEHF is able to operate off of an extended data rate. While they operate off of XDR, they are still backward compatible with Milstar’s low data rate and medium data rate communications. This allows continuous, uninterrupted communications for our sea, air and land forces.”

Extended data rate is a wavelength that pulls transmission speeds at a quicker rate than LDR and MDR, making the AEHF-6 satellite quicker and more powerful than the Milstar program.
