A1C Lindsay’s journey from pro sports to the Air Force

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Airman 1st Class Leslie Ann Lindsay, 50th Security Forces Squadron response force member, took a unique path to serve our nation.

Prior to enlisting, Lindsay danced for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts from 2015-17 and soon after she joined the NBA’s Indiana Pacers dance team from 2017-19.

“I was drawn toward dance since age three,” she said. “It is taxing on your body and it’s a lot of hard work.”

Lindsay attended Indiana State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. During her freshman year at ISU, Lindsay discovered the school’s dance team, which piqued her interest and rekindled a childhood passion.

The Defender said she cherished her dance experience at ISU, but didn’t want it to end after graduating in 2015. In April of the same year, Lindsay completed a two-week-long tryout for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and made the team.

The process included three rounds of dance routines, interviews with various members of the organization to test sports knowledge and a fitness test.

“You have to know the organization and the history of the sport,” Lindsay said. “You enjoy it, but it’s nerve-wracking because even after you make the team, you have to audition every year after that. It’s easily the most stressful two weeks of my life, but I got through it.”

nessed her dedication to secure spots on both teams.

“She focused heavily on dance and she was told at an early age from a couple of different people, ‘Dancing will never get you anywhere,’” he said. “She put her mind to it and made the Colts and the Pacers teams.”

Though she enjoyed her experiences with both organizations, Lindsay had to boost her income to ensure she maintained her life outside of the sport. Lindsay said the work is like a part-time job with a full-time commitment.

To supplement her salary while with the

Colts, Lindsay worked as a trainer and nutritionist. During her time with the Pacers, her desire to assist others blossomed.

“I worked to get my master’s in medical microbiology because before the military, my goal was to attend medical school,” she said. “In my off time, I’d work with an organization that went to Africa to help with women and children.”

Lindsay valued her work in Africa, but recognized benefitting others’ lives required more than three weeks, which was the duration of each trip. This realization buoyed Lindsay toward a career in the military.

“I knew I could either sit in a classroom for eight more years and wait to do something, or I could try to change something now,” Lindsay said.

In November 2019, Lindsay enlisted in the Air Force as a Defender because she said members deploy often and have the opportunity to do humanitarian work, which aligns with her vision.

“To hear her talk about [her goals,] you can tell that she’s passionate,” said Maj. Timothy Marriner, 50th SFS commander.

“She has short-term goals to get there and she understands it’s a long journey, but she’s willing to grind to accomplish her goals.”

Marriner said Lindsay’s hunger shows with each conversation. If she’s at her post or speaking to a fellow Wingman, Marriner said she moves with a purpose.

“She’s immersed herself and has a passion to get better at her job,” Marriner said.

“Seeing someone who’s new and has that fire in their eyes and wants to learn the job is refreshing. I’m looking forward to see how she progresses during her time at Schriever and I know she’s going to do great things moving forward.”

While in the military, Lindsay hopes to commission in security forces, serve 20 years and set an example to inspire fellow Wingmen and highlight how they can positively influence others.

“I want to make a difference,” she said.

“I’m grateful for my background and coming in at a later age because that helped me with my career. I hope to guide younger Airmen in their careers the way people have assisted me early on.”

OYAL AIR FORCE CROUGHTON, England — Last August, General Brown published his strategic approach titled “Accelerate Change or Lose.” This call to action describes an urgent need to adapt the Air Force to the changes we see across the globe.

One change involves empowering Airmen. He writes, “successful operations and combat support in a contested environment demand maximum delegation, trust, and empowerment of Airmen before conflict starts.”

Delegation, trust and empowerment don’t come easily to an organization known for uniformity. The very first training an Airman receives involves stripping all elements of individuality and choice.

In basic training, the Air Force ensures each trainee looks and acts the same, even going so far as to prescribe exactly how to perform the most mundane tasks such as folding your socks.

This type of training serves a critical purpose but when it is complete, we need to make an extra effort to ensure Airmen understand that there is a time and placeT:9.5" for rigid adherence to technical orders and regulations.

Certainly, you don’t want Airmen getting creative with how they pack a parachute while sending out a combat sortie. Before the conflict starts however, we must ensure there is freedom to innovate and problem solve, to show initiative, and stray from the prescribed way of doing business.

So how do we foster an environment that offers freedom to innovate? For an answer, I look to one of the most innovative organizations I know for ideas. Netflix completely up-ended

Joint Task Force-Space Defense Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Space Command conducted a security inspection April 6-8 and rated its component command, Joint Task Force-Space Defense, superior in their execution of special access program security protocols.

“This is the highest achievement a program can earn and is even more impressive when you consider it was accomplished under the added complications of COVID work limitations,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Tom James, JTF-SD commander. “[The inspector] recognized the complexity of our operations and the unique security challenges we face every day as we accomplish our critical mission.”

Two inspectors spent three days engaging the JTF-SD security team looking at more than 1,400 accountable items.

“This is my second inspection with this organization but I have been through several of these in other positions and this is a huge achievement,” said Paul Helm, JTF-SD director of the office of command security. “We are unique here, with the multiple programs, the dynamic JTF-SD operations and the different agencies operating here.”

Leading up to the inspection, James stressed the importance of doing well.

“We can’t operate in our environment if we don’t manage classified material correctly,” James said. “Our partnership is powerful but it is incumbent on us all doing our part to properly handle and manage classified information.”

Helm’s team of 15 conducted multiple self-inspections, including some with

disinterested party observers, to be sure the organization was ready.

Unlike some security teams which are divided by specialty, i.e. personnel security or industrial security, all JTFSD security team members are multidisciplinary which paid dividends in this inspection as well as during the last year’s COVID prevention measures.

“We had to go to minimum manning but onboarding personnel didn’t slow down,” he said. “Our team developed virtual in-processing, which was a huge hurdle for us, in order to keep the mission going. I’ve heard some say ‘well I can’t help because COVID,’ but that wasn’t our answer here.”

Those same COVID measures meant many staff were also taking on the role of teacher as their children were home schooling.

“It’s just amazing to me what they were able to accomplish,” Helm said.

One month before the inspection, the security team gained a civilian deputy, Charles Shaffer, who spent five years with the inspector general prior to assuming his post here.

“I was blown away by the multidisciplinary approach. I could go to anyone on the team and they had the answers,” Shaffer said. “I’ve never seen a superior rating before and I never gave one.

They’ve set the bar high.”

Shaffer will be charged with maintaining that high bar as Helm transitions to a new position in May. “I am so proud of the team, their cooperation and the way they worked together. I am glad to have been part of it,” Helm said. “Keep building upon this reputation you’ve established, enjoy it but don’t let your guard down.”

JTF-SD is set to be inspected again in approximately 24 months.

Peterson-Schriever Garrison makes light work of heavy snow

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — During heavy snow over the weekend of March 13, multiple mission essential units were snowed in, or had to work around the snow, at Peterson Air Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado.

According to U.S. Space Force 1st Lt. Timothy Horton, 21st Communications Squadron alpha crew commander at Cheyenne Mountain AFS, some crews had to stay 48 to 72 hours in the mountain to maintain around the clock operations to support no-fail missions.

“Contingencies have been in place for operations here at the mountain in cases of emergency,” Horton said. “We are always prepared to button up and stay in the mountain for an extended period of time.”

Cheyenne Mountain AFS provides cots, sleeping bags and meals, ready to eat when necessary, to support hosted combatant command centers and Department of Defense agencies. These assets are provided

“1st SOPS personnel were on the op-

erations floor in [continuous] support of the mission,” said U.S. Space Force Senior Master Sgt. Richard Justice, 1st SOPS senior enlisted leader.

Food was provided to snowed-in personnel by the squadron and previous crews in preparation for the snow.

“The unit spent the week prior to the storm tracking weather updates and ensuring that crews would be prepared for an extended time on the operations floor,” Justice said.

“1st SOPS maintains a cache of storm supplies such as MREs, cots, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets and personal supplies to support crews who are conducting the ‘protect and defend’ mission through the storm.”

At Peterson AFB, one critical operation that can be affected by snowfall is keeping the airfield up and running.

“We work with [the] 21st [Civil Engineer Squadron] heavy shop, who provided the personnel and equipment to clear the snow on the apron,” said U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Phonkamon Gehres, 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron airfield management continued page 7 | ESSENTIAL

operations supervisor. “Airfield management conducts pavement friction reading tests, [which] helps pilots to safely land and taxi. We communicate with Colorado Springs Municipal Airport operations [to] synchronize our snow operations.

We inspect the apron for any hazards and alert [the] proper agencies weather notifications.”

The Airmen on the airfield did not get stuck during the winter storm, however, they faced their own set of challenges in support of the mission.

“Most airfield management personnel live off-base,” Gehres said. “Therefore, some have to drive through hazard road conditions [and] get out earlier to ensure [they] get in on time,” Airfield management and the 21st CES heavy shop have an annually reviewed snow plan to ensure the apron is continually mission ready, according to Gehres.

The 21st LRS also have the responsibility of reporting on and forecasting snow fall.

“We supported all parts of the garrison, sending updates to Peterson leadership as well as Schriever and Cheyenne [Mountain],” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Julian McAlister, 21st LRS weather office flight chief. “We were fielding a large amount of phone calls and sending out regular forecast updates.”

According to McAlister, forecasters who had to stay late were able to stay in base

lodging to avoid driving at night through the snow storm.

The 21st Force Support Squadron had their hands full during the snow storm as well.

“Overall we supported six agencies, providing 114 meals, 17 MRE cases, 28 cots and 36 lodging rooms,” said U. S. Air Force Capt. Jamila Edgerson, 21st FSS operations officer. “Additionally, our child and youth facility opened its doors to support the children of mission essential workers on Monday.”

Preserving Wingman culture

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Being a good Wingman is more than showing up to work and checking tasks off a list. It takes initiative, empathy and a willingness to care for fellow Airmen and Guardians to embody the Wingman culture. To recognize and emphasize these ideals, Peterson and Schriever Air Force Bases participated in Wingman Day on April 13.

Wingman Days usually occur twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

“The purpose of Wingman Day is to offer Airmen and Guardians an opportunity to take a pause from normal operations, focus on their individual resilience,

and connect with others and build the social support that is critical when we encounter challenges in our lives,” said Jess Schroeder, Peterson AFB community support coordinator.

Chad Littlefield, co-founder and chief experience officer of We and Me Inc., an organization whose mission is to create conversations that matter, was the guest speaker at the last Wingman Day, held August 2020 at Peterson AFB. Following the success of his first facilitation, Littlefield was invited to return again in April for the garrison.

“Our hope is that participants will be able to create more meaningful connections after the session,” said Mary Devitt, Schriever AFB community support coor-

dinator. “Chad is an expert on creating trust and community within teams, which is what we want for our Airmen and Guardians at all levels.”

Schroeder explained the desired outcome for this event is for Airmen and Guardians to experience a new sense of support from those around them. They should feel refreshed, reinvigorated and motivated to improve their own personal resilience.

After the morning facilitation conducted via Zoom, units were released to conduct their own team building exercises and strengthen relationships within their workforce. Some of the activities Peterson-Schriever Garrison units participated in included hiking, axe throwing, go-karting, miniature golf and a zip-line course.

by acquiring their own content, House of Cards, in 2011. Two strategies from their playbook to create a positive environment for creative and innovative employees include 1) eliminate “bad policy” and 2) lead through “context, not control.”

Rules and policies should exist to either prevent disaster or to capture an ethical or legal issue. Mechanics need to follow Technical Orders to prevent life-threatening accidents. Additionally, we need to make it 100% clear to our Airmen that workplace harassment is absolutely unacceptable. These are examples of “good policy.”

Too often though, “bad policy” sprouts up from otherwise good intentions. It can come from a desire to prevent errors. For example, when an Airman sends an email to a Colonel with inaccurate information, we might put a new rule in place: ”All emails to FGOs require NCOIC review before sending.”

In actuality though, a bad email is a rare thing and even when it does happen, the mistake is entirely recoverable. The “cure,” on the other hand, delays communication and generates excessive work for the NCOIC. Even worse though, it tells the Airman

“I don’t trust you.” It might make sense to have a second set of eyes when the consequences of failure are catastrophic, but in routine operations we should err on the side of trust in order to keep an environment in which our team members feel empowered to own their work.

In another example, I recently heard a story from a friend who bought a shirt for their child and their child hated the color. Only 30 minutes after the original purchase, he ducked back into the same store with receipt in hand and asked if he could exchange it for another color.

The employee shrugged and pointed to a sign that said “no refunds or exchanges.”

This example is a two-fold failure. First, the “bad policy” was created to prevent an incorrect refund or exchange being given, but it fails to take into considerations that there might be exceptions.

Even worse though, it strips the employee of the freedom to apply good judgement. Instead of making hard and fast rules, we should educate our team about desired end goals, and trust them act accordingly.

So how do we fix “bad policy”? Examine your local policies closely and ask yourself, what is this trying to achieve? Does it create extra work, limit freedom or creativity, or have unintended consequences?

What are the consequences if this policy isn’t followed? Is the cure worse than the

SAFB ANNOUNCEMENTS 4-H Stem Club for militaryconnected children

The Schriever School Liaison and the Colorado State University Extension 4-H is offering a 4-H STEM Club at Schriever for all military-connected students (Ages 8-18). The event will take place every second Friday of the month at the Building 210, Dekok conference room (room 302). Hands-on projects and activities include engineering, energy, robotics, rocketry, kitchen science and other STEM opportunities the group is interested in! Special guests, competition and field trips when permitted. The club will elect officers, do STEM-related community service, learn public speaking, and develop leadership and citizenship skills.

50TH CES parking campaign

The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron recently completed a restricted area parking study that will address parking issues serving the north and west portal restricted areas at Schriever AFB.
