50th FSS hosts Lieutenant Professional Enhancement Seminar

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron hosted a Lieutenant Professional Enhancement Seminar at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, March 9-11. This new course provides junior officers and civilians the opportunity to learn about leadership traits and qualities.

“This course was established [with] the goal of preparing junior officers for the challenges of a successful Air Force career,” said James Driscoll, 50th FSS force development flight chief.

Joining Schriever AFB junior officers to take advantage of the first offering of the course were officials from the El Paso County Sheriff Office. “[The course is] meant for first and second lieutenants, but is also open to early [Department of Defense] civilian supervisors,” said Master Sgt. Kathryn North, the 50th FSS career assistance advisor. “With this new class specifically, we’ve opened it up to the community

for some leaders within the sheriff’s office.”

The Colorado Springs military installations and local law enforcement have strong ties to each other that go back decades. The opportunity to offer leadership and management principles while sharing mentoring experiences is one of many stepping stones for a stronger relationship.

“Colorado Springs has such an incredibly large military community, courses like this one are beneficial for both civilians and military because it helps gain better knowledge of others and strengthens connections,” said North.

With the relationship that 50th FSS has built between Schriever AFB and the local law enforcement, they were able to get two participants from the El Paso County Sheriff Office, Sergeant Kristyn Nordeman, Patrol Division school resource officer and Deputy Josie Haag, Special Operations Division school resource officer.

“We don’t have anything like ALS [Airmen Leadership School], NCO [noncommissioned officer] Academy, Senior NCO Academy, or anything along those lines.

This course is the closest to those that we can attend,” said

Haag. “There may be something that we can learn from you guys, that’s going to help us to help the community.”

The sheriff’s office runs a lot like the military when it comes to how they do things. The lessons learned from this course, can be brought back and implemented with their troops to be used daily.

“I learned a lot about the military life, now when I get a call and end up interacting with military personnel I have a better understanding of what they’re going through,” said Nordeman. “As a law enforcement official working within Colorado Springs, we are always running into military personnel. The lessons will bring us closer together.”

The Lieutenant Professional Enhancement Seminar takes place over two and a half days, with each class being eight hours a day and will be offered twice each year. Due to COVID-19 precautions to ensure student safety, the course was limited to 10 attendees.

TAMPA, Florida — U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Jessup, 23rd Maintenance Operations Squadron, worked as a HC130 maintenance instructor at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia when the Air Force announced a new program designed to boost numbers for its Nurse’s corps.

The Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program launched in 2007 is a two-part process. The first-half is a paid-in-full bachelor-level education with a nursing degree. The second is a bid into the commissioned ranks of the Air Force.

Jessup was one of the first 15 enlisted who was accepted into the program during its first year.

Now, Maj. Michael Jessup is serving on a deployment to the state-run, federally-supported Community Vaccination Center in Tampa, Florida as the vaccination tent’s medical director.

“I’ve been in for about 20 years, started out as a C-130 crew chief and did a lot of traveling,” said Jessup, family nurse practitioner in the family health clinic at the 21st medical operations squadron, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

“My previous assignment before I got picked up for school was at Moody Air Force Base where I applied for the Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program, and they sent me to school and I’ve been at various locations since.”

Elizabeth Turk, who works with Jessup, hopes to follow in his footsteps. Turk submitted her package for the NECP, and needed permission to still deploy and support the Tampa CVC. “As soon as I joined the Air Force I heard about the Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program, so that’s been my goal ever

since,” said Turk. “It’s my passion to take care of people and I want to reach my full potential and have a bigger scope to be able to do more as a nurse.”

Turk says being here and working with other nurses who were prior enlisted has reaffirmed her decision to apply for the program.

“Seeing them and how far they’ve come, hearing how much they love it and how glad they are, I’m very excited about it,” she said.

Turk says she’s also had an opportunity to work with nurses who didn’t use the program that wish they would have. U.S. Air Force Maj. Kelly Tabor, a former Security Forces Master Sgt. and Raven, says he applied for the program but his school didn’t meet eligibility requirements.

“I was enlisted for 15 years and was working at the warfare center in the 421st combat training squadron.” said Tabor.

“I did apply for the NECP but my tuition was over the cap limit, so I decided to go ahead and take care of it myself and finish school on my own.”

Tabor says his job at the time encouraged everyone to pursue school. Though he didn’t go through the program, he says it’s a great opportunity for those who struggle to find time for both school and work.

For those who maybe considering the process, Turk says it’s all about the end goal.

“It’s a very long process and there were a couple times I said ‘I’ll just try again next year’ because it was frustrating” said Turk. “But just remember why you joined, what you’re there for, and that the end goal is to be a nurse. Yeah, it’s tough when you’re in the middle of it — even saying you tried is worth it.” continued page 4 | COMMUNITY

IRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — Not all Soldiers walk on two legs and carry a rifle. The U.S. Military has partnered with canine warriors in every conflict since the Revolutionary War. Chip, a canine sentry of the U.S. Army, was the most decorated dog in World War II. He served with the 3rd Infantry Division in countries like Italy and France and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart. Military Working Dogs here at Kirtland AFB also deploy around the world and many receive awards and recognition similar to Chip.

As a U.S. Army veterinarian, I have the honor and privilege of caring for dogs like Chip. Each day I see evidence of the positive effects of human-animal bonds. These benefits are not limited only to the military, though. Recent research has shown very real physical and social-emotional benefits to owning a pet, and, in particular, a dog.

Physical, occupational therapy addresses injury prevention for MWD handlers

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIOCHAPMAN TRAINING ANNEX, Texas — In a physically and mentally demanding occupation, 341st Training Squadron military working dog handlers are exposed to risks. These risks are typically workplace injuries.

“Dealing with significant injuries, or just every day aches and pains, should not

be the norm.”

Physical and occupational therapy play an important role in reducing such injuries, along with the associated physical and mental stressors.

MWD handlers “experience a lot of physical stress when doing bite work with the bite sleeves” including “arms, shoulders and hands from the leash tension of having strong pulling dogs on a leash,” stated Logan Mordh, MWD trainer.

When two former members of the 341st TRS explored avenues of care and support, they enlisted the help of a physical and occupational therapy team who took a proactive approach to addressing injury concerns.

“MWD handlers have a very physically intensive job in an ever-changing and dynamic environment. Additionally, their daily movements are repetitive which increases their risk of overuse injury,” stated Capt. Brittaney Nores, a physical therapist

and executive officer at the 59th Surgical Operations Squadron.

MWD trainers are further limited in predicting the speed or angle at which a dog may bite or jump from, creating the probability for increased injury. These considerations led physical and occupational therapists to establish a holistic injury mitigation program specific to the needs of handlers.

“Physical therapists are able to identify trends, modify habits, and educate members on self-care and injury mitigation techniques from a holistic approach,” Nores expressed.

Both Jessup and Tabor agree they enjoyed their former careers, yet are happy they went in a different direction.

“I loved being a crew chief. In my first five years enlisted I went to 17 different countries which is amazing considering where I came from and where I grew up,” said Jessup. “But one of the things I always was thinking about was that I’d be the first person in my family to get a college degree. The Air Force provided me that opportunity and I wouldn’t change it.”

Tabor also recommends anyone hoping to apply for the program to start early. The NECP application process is lengthy, and may require applicants to complete program-specific college requirements before being selected.

“I enjoyed being security forces,” said Tabor. “But I felt like I had done everything I could, becoming a

Whether scar massage techniques or desensitization exercises are incorporated, each treatment “better [equips] this team with ergonomics and activity modification in order to reduce injuries obtained on the job” encouraging healthy coping skills, thereby allowing handlers to remain focused, said Capt. KaRena Lehman, occupational therapy element chief.

To be considered for the NECP board, applicants must be U.S. citizens with a minimum rank of Airman 1st Class, should have no more than 10 years total active federal service as of July 30 of the board year, though the requirement is waiverable.

In addition, Airmen must meet time-on-station and retainability requirements, possess current security clearances, be worldwide qualified and commissioned by age 42. Applicants are also required to meet the minimum grade point average requirement of the accepted nationally accredited nursing school.

Ergonomic adjustments, coping mechanisms, and warm- up and cool- down exercises are just a few therapy tools that allow MWD trainers to take proactive steps in job injury prevention.

“Instead of rehabbing after an injury or surgery, we are trying to reduce the number that happen with education and targeted techniques. This approach is an injury mitigation versus injury rehabilitation,” Nores said.

Taking care of one’s health early is critical to lasting success.

“You only have one body for the next 60-plus years and you need to take care of yourself physically and mentally. Address your pain and limitations now so you are able to be functional currently and in your later years,” Lehman pointed out.

The necessity for preventative measures must be considered, so that the passion and efforts displayed by MWD handlers continue with ease.

“I’ve personally seen these men and women go above and beyond in training and caring for our four-legged Airmen. Serving in this unrelenting environment, where the physical demands are high, requires a heightened focus on the well-being of our MWD handlers and trainers. Anything less could jeopardize their success both personally and professionally,” said Col. Joyce Storm, 37th TRG commander.

“Dealing with significant injuries, or just every day aches and pains, should not be the norm,” she added. “Providing the right resources helps reduce workplace stressors and improve not only morale, but performance. I’m continually amazed to see the teamwork displayed by those organizations who support our proactive approach in taking care of our Airmen (two- and four-legged).”

Swamp Fox fuels experts assist C-5 crew with maintenance problem

MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. — Teamwork makes the dream work, as the old saying goes.

When a C-5 Galaxy transport jet landed at McEntire last week to pack up cargo for the wing’s overseas deployment, the aircrew discovered a fuel leak which could have grounded the aircraft. Fortunately, three Swamp Fox Airmen stepped in with the right expertise to troubleshoot and fix the problem so the jet could take off on time.

On April 7, a C-5 Super Galaxy from the 312th Airlift Squadron from Travis Air Force Base, California arrived at McEntire Joint National Guard Base to load palletized equipment onto the heavy transport aircraft for movement to Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia. After all the cargo was successfully loaded, the aircrew discovered a fuel leak originating on the right wing which would have grounded the aircraft, according to U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Shawn Daley, 169th Maintenance Squadron commander. After a quick call to transient alert, a team from the fuels shop consisting of Master Sgt. Robert Woodard, Staff Sgt. David Viers and Staff Sgt. Anthony Romero was dispatched to assess the problem.

“Only personnel from the fuels shop could work on [the problem]. Being that we had some 7-level type experts available, they were able to assess what was wrong, make a fix according to the T.O. (technical order) and then were able to sign off on the section knowing that it would work,” Daley said.

Woodard, Viers and Romero diagnosed that the problem was with a panel for a fuel pump. They removed the safety wire to re-torque the fasteners and then installed new safety wire, Daley explained. Had the Swamp Fox fuels personnel not been available, the C-5 would have been stuck overnight until the Air Force could have flown in a maintenance team to fix the problem.

Simultaneously, the fuels shop was also troubleshooting problems on four SCANG F-16s to get them ready to leave on the deployment.

“What made this really significant is that we had four broke F-16s on the ramp that we were trying to prep for deployment, all with fuels related issues. So they were working four other [Air Expeditionary Force] jets during that exact time,” Daley said.

Thanks to Swamp Fox expertise and teamwork, mission failure was averted and the jets were able to depart as planned.

Roth praises Air Force contributions to mass vaccination centers

TAMPA, Fla. — Acting Secretary of the Air Force John P. Roth travelled to Florida April 16, to tour an efficiently-run tent city and COVID-19 mass vaccination operation.

The vaccination facility, which is designed to administer 3,000 shots a day (though it hit 5,636 shots in a single day earlier this month), is under the control of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state of Florida. However, a staff of 139 active duty Airmen from 25 bases across 22 states make up the operational engine providing vaccinations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

The Tampa facility, which began offering COVID-19 vaccinations March 3, is one of four, large-scale vaccination centers in the state and one of 171 centers nationwide supported by federal personnel. (There are 440 community vaccination centers in all nationwide that receive some mixture of personnel, supplies and funding from the federal government.)

“COVID vaccines are the cornerstone for the nation and for us as the Department of the Air Force to get past this crisis,” Roth said during the visit, calling the coronavirus pandemic “the existential crisis to the nation right now.”

“I’ve been a proselytizer as I’ve gone around to 13 bases the last couple of months, encouraging Airmen and Guardians to get vaccinated. Getting shots in arms is an important step in the right direction,” he said.

The same is true for the public and the nation as a whole.

With the number of COVID-19 cases spiking in some parts of the country and with new coronavirus variants becoming more widespread, the White House is pushing hard to vaccinate people as a principle defense against the disease.

In that respect, Roth said it makes sense for the Air Force to “bring to bear capabilities” to help in the effort. In addition

“I thought it was important for me to see an example of the support we’re providing FEMA and others in the COVID effort.

I enjoyed it immensely. I got a lot out of seeing the Airmen and speaking to them,” Roth said.

“I was pleased to see how effectively and efficiently the operation was being run and I was particularly taken with the individual Airmen and how enthusiastic they were about trying to help out,” he said.

“One of the reasons I leave the Pentagon is for opportunities like this is to visit Airmen and Guardians and see the great work they are doing. To get out and see Airmen and Guardians is always refreshing and I always come back very optimistic with the state of the force, the morale of the force and the talent we have out there.”

Along with its state and federal partners, the Air Force, and specifically Airmen operating under the 15th Air Force, have made a considerable contribution. To date, the personnel have given more than 570,000 vaccinations across the eight facilities where they are assigned.

Roth said he was impressed by how well the various government entities meshed to move people from the entrance through the eight tents that have stations for screening people, record keeping, providing information about the vaccines, then to later stations where the vaccines are administered and seats for the after-shot waiting period.

While the mix of participants may be unusual, the concept isn’t for Air and Space Forces personnel, Roth said.

“It really is a good example of the idea of ‘joint operations’ but in a different way. It’s very impressive,” he said.

Pets help humans connect with others

Reduced blood pressure

A U.S. study recently published in the American Heart Association Journal, “Hypertension,” followed 48 people with high blood pressure who were given dogs. After six months, their blood pressure was significantly lower.

Other studies show that dog owners have increased immune function and overall significantly fewer health problems. In general, dogs keep us physically active, keep us busy and give us companionship.

Physicological benefits

In addition to the physical and social aspects of the human-animal bond, animals have an important psychological impact on their owners. Pets help reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

Recent studies at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine examined the effects of service dog partnerships on the symptoms of combat trauma.

The studies found that veterans with service dogs had significantly less depression, increased quality of life and higher social functioning.

The work of a program called Warrior Canine Connection has shown similar benefits but uses a different approach. In this program, wounded warriors with post-traumatic stress train dogs to become service animals. Training dogs helps recovering veterans cope with post-deployment challenges, and in the process, the veterans heal themselves.

In addition to physical benefits, animals help create human-to-human friendships and lead to increased social support. A survey conducted by the University of Western Australia, Harvard and Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition found that pet owners were 60% more likely than non-pet owners to get to know people in their neighborhoods. They also found that people who have solid social networks are 50% more likely to live longer than those with limited social networks.

In today’s society, especially with increased usage of social media and COVID isolation, many people have trouble making connections. Pets provide an incentive for people to get out of their homes and a means for them to connect with others over a mutual interest.

Dogs have been part of our society for thousands of years. Having a pet cannot only facilitate a healthy lifestyle but can also provide numerous other psychological and social benefits. While canine Soldiers, like Chip and the Kirtland AFB Military Working Dogs, help keep the country safe, our personal pets help keep us active and bring us together as a community.

21ST MDG ANNOUNCEMENTS MHS GENESIS Patient Portal

The 21st Medical Group will be transitioning from using TRICARE Online (TOL) and Secure Messaging System to MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, April 24. MHS GENESIS Patient Portal is a secure website that allows you to access your health information, schedule appointments, and exchange messages with your care team anytime and anywhere.

In preparation for the new MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, login to milConnect and create your DS Logon. Beneficiaries with an existing DS Logon should upgrade their account to Premium Access. A link to the “My Access Center” is available on the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal landing page to direct patients on how to get their DS Logon credentials. COVID-19 point of testing location

The Peterson AFB COVID-19 Point of Testing location will be open Monday and Wednesday from 8 to 11 a.m. for appointments and tier testing. This time change allows a smoother transition for the afternoon vaccinations.

COVID-19 vaccine is available for eligible personnel

Effective immediately, the 21st MDG is opening eligibility to all patients ages 16 and older. The 21 MDG is administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. It is a 2-dose vaccine series and the second dose is required 21 days after the initial dose.

You MUST have an appointment to receive the vaccine. Walk-ins will not be accepted. To book your vaccine appointment, please visit https://informatics-stage.health.mil/COVAX/ or call 719-5242273, option 1 (patients should anticipate longer than normal wait times if booking by phone).

Individuals who are 16 or 17 will need a legal guardian present during the vaccination appointment.

Safety 411: PMV-2 focus

The Spring PMV-2 Focus runs until May 21, 2021 and is intended to highlight motorcycle safety and ensure all military riders know the requirements. The Motorcycle Unit Safety Tracking Tool (MUSTT) and Unit Motorcycle Safety Representative (MSR's) are vital in helping Airmen mitigate risks inherent to riding a motorcycle.

From novice to seasoned motorcycle rider, proper training can make a difference in the rider’s life and overall safety of those around. Riding a motorcycle is an inherently dangerous activity; however, the risks can be mitigated with preparation and awareness.

If you ride, please contact your MSR to ensure your training is up-to-date. If you don’t ride, look twice for motorcycles while operating a vehicle.
