Peterson Airmen support Florida community members

TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Air Force Captain Stephanie McIlwraith promised herself she would never return to Florida after her mother’s funeral in August of 2020.

Earlier that year, just as the nation began to implement COVID-19 restrictions, McIlwraith’s mother was diagnosed with cancer.

“Unfortunately, I allowed my fear of getting her sick stop me from making the trip to see her before [her] passing,” said McIlwraith. “I left Florida in August after my mom’s funeral, and I vowed I was never coming back here.”

Nearly six months later, McIlwraith is currently deployed from her home station at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado to the state-led, federally supported community vaccination center here in Tampa, Florida.

“I was actually very upset when I found out we were coming here,” said McIlwraith, a clinical nurse who grew up nearby in Clearwater, Florida. “However, it has been a very rewarding experience.”

For McIlwraith, being deployed to help fight the virus that prevented her from seeing her mom one last time is only part of the reward. She also gets to help keep her other family members healthy and safe.

Her extended family still lives in the area, and qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine, so McIlwraith was able to personally vaccinate her grandmother and aunt at the center.

“For my family, trying to get an appointment and not knowing how to get transportation was an issue,” said McIlwraith. “So, for them to come here and get the one shot, that was the easy option for them.”

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Linzie Avalos, an aerospace medic also deployed from Peterson AFB, says the experience here is nothing like she imagined.

The 26-year-old is originally from Phoenix and studied criminal justice in college.

“I thought I could come in as a paralegal, but they didn’t need me for that,” said Avalos. “But [being a

medic] was an option so, here I am. This is my first deployment, and I didn’t know what to expect, but it’s been extremely rewarding to be able to serve the community like this.”

Unlike Avalos, this isn’t U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jerrica Wild’s first deployment as a medic. She says she’s deployed several times overseas, including Afghanistan, but this type of deployment is a first for her.

“Whether deployed or at home station, I’m used to working in a hospital environment caring for other service members,” said Wild, also deployed from Peterson AFB. “To be able to help a community in need like this is something I can’t explain. “ Nearly 140 Airmen are deployed to Tampa to support the whole-of-government COVID-19 pandemic response. U.S. Army North, U.S. Northern Command's Joint Force Land Component Command, has overseen the Department of Defense's COVID-19 response operation in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services since March 2020.

Approximately 2,900 military medical and support personnel from the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Forces are currently working, or will soon work, in 11 states and one territory as part of the federal vaccine response to the pandemic.

To date, these military personnel have administered approximately 700,000 vaccines.

This was the greeting from one of my now dearest employees when I took over as the Deputy Commander and Staff Judge Advocate of the 426th Air Base Squadron in Stavanger, Norway.

He did not mean it in any judgmental or condescending way — just matter of fact. He has been with the squadron since its inception in 1996, and in all that time he never worked for a woman. But his comment doesn’t shake me, I was born for this.

My story begins in a Detroit grocery store in 1979 — three years before my birthday. The nightshift manager was a young, ambitious woman whose presence stood at least ten feet taller than her barely five-foot frame.

She was a woman in charge of a bunch of men, rare in those times. They often called her “bossy,” but she was the first one they called when they needed to get things done.

Her story began on a Detroit night in 1968, when her father T:9.5" a wife and five died suddenly of a heart attack leaving behind children. She went from child to provider overnight. There

was no “man of the house,” just a 10-year-old girl who took charge because someone had to. She had her first job at ten, cooked her first Thanksgiving meal at thirteen, and beat out several older men for a coveted management position by the time she was twenty-one.

Her mother’s story began in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1922 — newly born to Italian immigrants; she was known for her trademark smile and sassy attitude. The Great Depression thrust her into the workforce as a kid to help provide for the family.

“Early on I knew women could do anything because I saw her

do everything.”

If it taught her anything, it was how to take care of herself.

When she hit the traditional marrying age, all of the eligible men in her town were off fighting a war.

Peterson-Schriever Garrison NCO wins national award

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kayla Roberts, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron fire inspector, was recognized as the 2020 GEICO Military Service Award recipient in the category of fire and safety for her exceptional service and contributions, Feb. 19, 2021.

The GEICO Military Service Awards Program highlights and pays tribute to the many contributions of our nation's military enlisted members. In support of the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation, the awards program helps spotlight the valuable and lasting contributions that enlisted members of the armed services make within their communities.

In February, U.S. Air and Space Force leadership used virtual technology to surprise Roberts, with a Zoom call from leaders including Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne Bass and Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force Roger Towberman, to congratulate her.

“The Zoom call definitely caught me off guard,” said Roberts. “Speaking with them was incredible. Chief Bass asked me questions like, ‘What’s the hardest thing about being a parent?’ It was cool to see that she cares about my family life, in addition to wanting to recognize me.”

Roberts worked tirelessly to complete 139 annual building inspections despite a 60% depletion in office staffing. Due to her work ethic, there was a correction in 85 fire safety deficiencies directly improving the work environment and

safety for 9,000 total force members.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Samantha Beck, 21st CES assistant chief of accreditation and compliance, and Robert’s supervisor, says Roberts is one of the most hardworking and genuine firefighters she has worked alongside.

“She puts her heart into everything she touches and the outcome of her work shows that,” said Beck. “It is so great to work with someone who takes their work seriously and gives 110%, but is also easy going and makes work fun.

She’s always wanting to learn more and receive more training to better understand all aspects of her job. Her drive is truly inspirational.”

Roberts said the honor of the award resonates with her role as a woman in the military and in the fire service.

“Being given the chance to do fire prevention, which is a competitive position to obtain, and then finding out that I won this award feels like a huge accomplishment,” said Roberts. “It’s not easy to stand out and feel confident when you are working as a female in the fire department.

Roberts said that while she is proud of earning the award, she didn’t earn it by herself.

“I feel like [the award] was won by my fire prevention team,” said Roberts. “It started with my leadership giving me the opportunity to work in fire prevention and the team I worked with having the confidence in me to do my job, grow and push me, allowing me to grow.”

As one of the award recipients, Roberts will attend a formal recognition ceremony in Washington D.C.

Promotion ceremony reunites family

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. — Over the past year, the world and the Air Force discovered just how much can be accomplished virtually. Everyday meetings, major life events such as promotions and weddings have all transitioned to digital spaces. More than a year later, the COVID-19 virus continues to ravage our world and the pandemic has personally affected a great many in some way.

However, virtual connections do have their limitations, and for one Air Force District of Washington member, events over the past year made it feel all the more important for her family to be physically present for her promotion ceremony.

Col. Chelsea Bartoe, who now serves as Judge Advocate General Corps Investigations, Inquiries, and Relief division chief in the Military Justice and Discipline domain at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, brought her promotion ceremony hundreds of miles to Minnesota in order for her family to participate. The family has been through a lot over the past year as her father, Bruce Van Beusekom, contracted the COVID-19 virus and fell ill in October.

“I flew back to Minnesota at the worst of his Covid experience,” Bartoe said. “He was hospitalized starting October 1, came home for a couple of days, was re-hospitalized and remained in rehab until after Thanksgiving.”

her father, Bruce, was admitted to the intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. During his hospitalization, the family spoke to him over video chats when they were able to.

“We didn’t know if we would see him again and every time we hung up on a FaceTime call that would go through your head, ‘Ok was that it and what did I say to him? If that’s the end was that ok?’” Bartoe said. “It was just a really hard time.”

Throughout his hospitalization, her father asked for updates about her promotion. As a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army

National Guard, he understood how hard Bartoe worked over the years and didn’t want to miss it.

“So much had happened in the hospital that he didn’t know about and he was worried he’d miss my promotion,” Bartoe said.

Eventually, her father recovered enough to return home, though due to lingering effects from the COVID-19 virus, he was unable to travel.

Much of Bartoe’s family had not witnessed one of her promotions over 17 years serving with the JAG Corps in the Air Force.

“It wasn’t an event I wanted my family to miss,” Bartoe said “It was important to them to see it live, and command understood that, which I really appreciated.”

The day of the actual promotion ceremony turned out to be a blustery 20-degrees near a lake in Minneapolis, Minnesota March 1. The ceremony was a family affair, which included Bartoe’s two brothers, parents Twyla and Bruce, and others attending the event outside to keep the ceremony as safe as possible.

Her husband, Lt. Col. Zach Bartoe was the presiding officer, and her father administered the oath of office. Her children, Noah, 10, and Brooklyn, 8, pinned the rank on her coat, her husband pinned her hat, and her parents pinned the new, colonel-rank epaulets on her blues shirt.

“I think really the best moment of the whole [event] was having my dad there. It meant so much to us considering his prior military experience,” Bartoe said. “It’s been a very challenging year so for him to actually be there was just a fantastic moment.”

Bartoe thanked her leadership for supporting her vision and recognizing the rigor of earning such rank — the third highest of field grade officers. Currently less than about 2% of the Air Force wears the silver eagle denoting the title.

“We didn’t always think that day would look how it did,” Bartoe said. “Everything felt perfect about it, and it was a great way to transition to the next rank.”

better believe when she did (IF she did), she was not relinquishing any of her independence. One day a man saw her pass by the window of a barber shop. He said he wanted to marry her. She said marriage to her came with some terms.

They were married by thirty. When he died at forty-five, it was hard for an olive-skinned Italian woman with five kids to find work. So she went door-todoor looking for enough houses to clean to put food on the table. This was her life’s work well into her seventies. She never remarried. Her daughter kept her company.

That daughter became a manager at a Detroit grocery store, and married a man who stocked shelves. He wasn’t intimidated by her position. He respected it — and her.

In fact, when they had two daughters of their own, he used to take them to the store to see her in action, “Look at your mom — she’s the boss!” When the grocery store went out of business, leaving them both unemployed, they pooled their resources together to send her to college.

In their home there was no “man’s place” or “woman’s place.” There was simply a partnership, centered on two little girls.

This is my story.

At 8 years old, I attended my mother’s college graduation, seated between my dad and my little sister. It was my mom’s achievement, but it was a milestone for the entire family. Her mother — my nana — was also with us that day.

I can’t imagine how proud she was to see my mom walk across that stage. Let people think cleaning houses was lowclass, look at what scrubbing floors on her hands and knees allowed her to provide her daughter. And my nana didn’t care what people thought of her anyway.

My mom was the first college graduate in both her and my dad’s blue collar Italian families. For me, the culmination of her graduation was by far my most formative experience. I watched her balance children, a marriage, a job, a mortgage, and a full-time school schedule — all before she was 30. And through it all she barely missed a gym day.

I remember the morning she left the house for her last final exams, she was covered in hives because the fate of our entire family hung in the balance. Early on I knew women could do anything because I saw her do everything.

Last year, my mother retired as a partner from the seventh largest public accounting network in the world. Her portfolio spread from Detroit to Brazil to Milan to Prague. She earned a living that allowed my sister and me to go away to college full time, and to eventually become the primary breadwinners in our own homes.

At her retirement, employee after employee raved about her as a leader.

She credited everything she knew about taking charge to her mother. I stood in awe of the extraordinary women who came before me.

There was no “man of the house,” just a 10-year-old girl who took charge because someone had to. That may be true, but it was generations of women who carried me here.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Spring is here and the region’s black bears are leaving their hibernation and looking for meals.

If bears found food in trash containers near your home or office last year before hibernating, it's probably the first place they will return to this spring. If it happens to be a returning sow with cubs, she’s educating the next generation of dumpster divers.

Access to your trash and food habituates bears to being comfortable around people, so close and latch the doors to your bear-resistant dumpsters or tote-receptacles. This protects you and the bears, as medicine,

chemicals, plastics and other household trash can injure or kill a bear.

Residents without a bear-resistant dumpster must secure their trash in a garage, or other enclosed area until collection day.

Immunizations Hours — Schriever AFB Since Feb. 24, the 21st MDS Immunizations

will begin a temporary hours of operation change.

Until further notice, immunizations will be open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Covid-19 point of testing location

The Peterson AFB COVID-19 Point of Testing location will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. for appointments and tier testing. This time change allows a smoother transition for the afternoon vaccinations. Tuesday and Thursday curative surveillance testing hours are from 8-11 a.m.

Dependent ID extension memo Due to COVID-19, the policy for dependent IDs has changed and allows dependents to use their IDs through June 30, even if they are expired.

Air Force Marathon Air and Space Challenge application The Air Force Marathon takes place Sept. 16-19, at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The Air and Space Challenge is an important part of the 2021 USAF Marathon. Each MAJCOM and USSF may field one full marathon team and one half marathon team to participate in the challenge. MAJCOM Teams are open to all Active Duty Airmen within their respective command. The USSF Team is open to all Active Duty Space Force Guardians and Airmen assigned to USSF installations, including the NRO. Application Deadline is June 3, 2021.
