Dorm Airmen stay resilient despite quarantine

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As the quarantine extends and the days seem to drag, Schriever dorm Airmen find ways to stay resilient despite all that is going on in the world.

Among those is Airman 1st Class Billie Fisler, Distributive Mission Operations Center — Space commander’s support staff, who has been quarantined since March 17.

“It’s bigger than the individual at this point —

it’s about keeping other people safe.”

“Despite being quarantined for so long, I’ve taken up new hobbies and started focusing on my mental health,” she said. “I’ve started to cook more, make puzzles and tie-dye.”

At 20 years old, Fisler is the youngest Airman to work in her unit and is currently the only junior enlisted Airman serving in the DMOC-S. “My leadership has been great,” she said. “They’ve checked up on me periodically to make sure I’m OK. They’ve brought me supplies, like pots and pans, and even puzzles. It’s good to know your leadership cares about you.”

Additionally, Fisler said she’s gone on walks and made frequent calls to her family to make sure they’re healthy.

“My concern is something happening to my family or friends,” she said. “It’s important we practice proper hygiene and follow the safety guidance put out by our leaders, like physical distancing. It’s bigger than the individual at this point — it’s about keeping other people safe.”

While some Airmen, like Fisler, are able to telework full-time, others are not due to mission requirements.

Squadron Extremely High Frequency Satellite systems operator, still reports to duty according to his normal crew rotation.

“It’s critical our mission continues,” he said. “We need to make sure we maintain our space superiority regardless of what’s happening here on Earth.”

However, mission enthusiasm can only do so much.

Airmen must practice resilience outside of the workplace to maintain good mental health and morale.

“Life pretty much goes on as normal for me,” Brewington

said. “I play video games with my friends, watch movies and go on the occasional run. I really started to notice the restrictions when I couldn’t go out with my friends or hang out without wearing a mask.”

Practicing resilience is more important now more than ever as Gov. Jared Polis has extended Colorado’s stay-athome order to April 26.

RAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Stress can be fairly terrifying at times and if not managed properly, it can be overbearing and affect your health.

There was a time when I struggled with controlling my stress and it began to negatively affect my eating habits, communication skills and my outlook on life. However, everything changed the day I learned to manage my stress and now I’m a better person and Airman for it.

The first step I took to take control of my stress was acknowledging that having stress is normal and everyone deals with it.

Stress is a part of daily life and in manageable doses it can actually be used as a motivational tool. Stress can be used to help accomplish daily challenges and achieve goals throughout your life. Studies have also shown that some stress can actually help fortify your immune system, improve how well your heart performs and protect you from infection.

It’s when you get overwhelmed and start drowning in stress that it becomes unhealthy. When people deal with too much stress over a long period of time, they can be affected by ailments such as headaches, anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, depression and other mental or physical afflictions.

This is why it is important to maintain control because if you don’t manage your stress, it will manage you.

When taking a break I believe it is crucial you don’t just stop (working), but incorporate something you enjoy doing as well.

When your work day ends, rest is crucial, but having fun is just as important. Some people may want to hit up a club, others may want to go for a drive or sit back and drink with friends.

I struggled for a long time to find the one thing that helped me relieve stress.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve struggled with controlling my stress. It would get so bad I’d have difficulty finishing a simple test because I was so scared of failure. Over time I improved my ability to work under stress, but never learned how to properly deal with the stress inside me.

It wasn’t until I spoke with a counselor in college that I was informed about how stress works and how I can reduce it. When I got off work or finished an assignment, I had to find ways to relax and disconnect during my time. SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2nd Space Operations Squadron initiated the disposal of the last operational GPS IIA satellite, satellite vehicle number 34, April 13 to 20, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

The GPS satellite program currently uses 31 satellite vehicles to transmit precise position, navigation and timing signals to more than 6 billion users around the world. To support the Air Force’s GPS III modernization efforts, 2nd SOPS operators phase out older models to make room for the new GPS III satellites.

The disposal of SVN-34 marks the end of a 26.5 year era in which the satellite outlived its 7.5 year design life by 19 years.

“As we continue to manage the influx of GPS III (the newest iteration of GPS satellites) and maintaining other vehicles in a residual status, we have to be cognizant of effective risk management,” said Capt. Angela Tomasek, 2nd SOPS GPS mission engineering and analysis flight commander. “As SVN-34 continued to age, we had to manage its aging components and likelihood of having a critical malfunction. We are at a stage where we are confident in the robustness of the overall

GPS constellation to remove the last remaining IIA vehicle.”

Units conduct satellite disposals when a satellite reaches the end of its operational life and no longer requires daily caretaking and maintenance.

“We push the satellite vehicle to a higher, less congested, ‘disposal orbit’ to eliminate the probability of collision with other active satellites,” Tomasek said. “[Then,] the vehicle is put into a safe configuration by depleting the leftover fuel and battery life and shutting off the satellite vehicle transmitters so no one else can access the satellite in the future.”

Once SVN-34 is in its final orbit, 2 SOPS will hand over full tracking responsibility to the 18th Space Control Squadron at Vandenberg AFB, California, where it will be treated and catalogued like every other space object April 20.

“This disposal marks the end of an era in GPS history,” said Lt. Col. Stephen Toth, 2nd SOPS commander. “There are senior leaders and long-time contractors [who] launched and operated the IIA satellites at the beginning of their careers [who] are now here to see it end. It is an opportunity to reflect on the legacy and heritage of 2 SOPS and GPS to see how far we have come.”

50th CONS ‘shines’ in time of need

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Accessing health and medical supplies during COVID-19 continues to burden society, but the 50th Contracting Squadron creates ways to procure the necessary items to complete its mission.

Members of 50th CONS work with the squadrons to ensure they have the items necessary to remain operational and, on April 2, they distributed some of those materials to the 50th Space Wing at the 50th Logistics Readiness Flight’s warehouse.

They’re also contacting commanders around Schriever to determine consumption rate of supplies and how often 50th CONS members need to make orders.

“Getting the necessary supplies when they’re hard to find is basically our whole job,” said Staff Sgt. Arron Riffle, 50th CONS contracting officer. “A lot of units and a lot of people on base don’t understand contracting. Many people look at contracting like, ‘I need to buy office desks or office furniture.’

But times like these are when contracting shines.”

Members of 50th CONS obtained 384 rolls of paper towels, dozens of bottles of hand sanitizer, gloves scrubs and masks other supplies. This required creativity from the Airmen. continued page 7 | SUPPLIES

STRESS MANAGEMENT From page 3 It didn’t take me long to figure out what it is that I enjoy. I play video games with an online community with whom I have grown very close. The games vary from massive multiplayer online fantasy games to action role-playing single player games. When I jump into a game, I can feel any stress that has built up within me just melt away.

I know it may sound childish to say, “I play video games to reduce my stress” but that doesn’t matter. When you clock out for the day your time belongs to you, spend it the way you want. It doesn’t matter if others see your hobby as a waste of time, if it’s what you love doing, then feel free to indulge yourself.

Relieving the stress you built up today will help you better yourself tomorrow. You will find yourself wellrested, able to jump into work better focused on current tasks and discover a more physically and mentally healthier version of yourself free from stress overloads.

I truly believe it’s important that everyone finds that one thing that makes them happy. So get out there and find what it is that you love to do and give yourself the break we all know you deserve.

It’s been a challenge, but I feel like we’re moving in the right direction.”

The unit also relied on their contacts to assist in providing the base with medical supplies and other materials. Staff Sgt. Glinnis Thompson, 50th CONS contracting specialist, “scoured nearly half of America” to find cleaning and medical items in stock.

“Staff Sgt. Thompson is the hero of this,” Riffle said. “That guy has been working long hours and busting his tail to do all of this.”

Prior to minimal staff at Schriever Air Force Base, Thompson and other Airmen combed through Colorado Springs to find supplies. Once they exhausted those resources, Thompson made several calls to secure the necessities.

“Everyone’s expertise and knowledge of companies and people who can get things done really helps,” Thompson said. “Contractors bring a lot to the table when they have a repertoire of people they can go to in situations like this.”

The Airmen worked additional hours to help 50th CONS secure items and supplies necessary to complete the mission. This was in addition to their normal schedule, which Thompson said takes at least 36 hours per assignment to complete their tasks, which includes providing operational and specialized acquisitions guidance and support for the 50th SW. “It’s rewarding to be able to find supplies we can use,” Thompson said. “On a typical day, these products would be easy to source and procure. Now, it’s so much more rewarding to get these items and provide for the base that is crucially in need of what we have. It’s been a great achievement and a lot of hard work.”

50th SC remains mission ready with CTF

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Nearly 10 Airmen from the 50th Space Communications Squadron continued to hone their cyber-attack defense skills during Capture the Flag events hosted by 92nd Space Operations Squadron.

The exercise began March 25 and will continue as long as COVID-19 transmission prevention keeps Airmen practicing physical distancing guidelines.

The CTF exercise, which provides training events held by various information security companies around the world, currently has more than 20 squadrons and nearly 250 operators participating to ex-

compromised network, they find the threat and stop the activity.

Once 567th COG learned COVID-19 delayed their hunt events, the group compiled training for CTF, which took nearly a week and a half to create.

“It’s important because the longer they’re stuck at home and not running usual training events, the harder it is to stay fresh and in the groove,” Wilson said. “We have opportunities like this where we can set up a competition with a wide selection of different challenges. It provides an opportunity for our operators to stretch their muscles and also try things they might not be [able to elsewhere].”

The CTF exercise provides “a Jeopardy-style” training for Airmen with nearly 200 training options where participants use communication, teamwork and individual skills to complete the mission.

“We have several [trainings] that are host-based analysis on Unix and Windows systems where you’ll either log in to a system and look for evidence that a bad guy’s been there or you’ll get logs from a Windows system and identify what the bad guy did when he was there,” Wilson said. “What’s good is this can be used after [COVID-19]. We can use these [trainings] for mission training and incorporate those once we [return to base].”

Through their first three weeks of participation, 50th SCS made its mark. The squadron placed two of its teams in the top 10, March 26-27.

“Without this kind of practice and training, in the future, if something big was to happen, we would need to marry automation and AI-driven technologies with skilled operators who can respond quickly in a timely manner and be lethal on the keyboard as well,” Evans said. “Learning how to operate as a team can make or break an organization.”

Evans discovered throughout his career that his pursuit of knowledge afforded him several opportunities. It allowed Evans to defend Air Force networks and to complete road missions.

“CTF brings a drive to want to do this more,” Evans said. “In the cyber protection realm, those who did CTFs [developed] a greater drive to want to be better at their jobs because we wanted to outdo one another. It’s important for us to develop our [tactics, techniques and procedures] to document them. We need those to be replicated no matter who’s behind the computer.”

“It brings new skills to the table because the cyber terrain is constantly changing; there is always a newer operating system version, applications, and hardware every year, and, in some environments, every month.”

The 50th SCS secured an invite to participate through Ezra Ortiz, 50th SCS cyber operations director, who previously worked with the 567th Cyberspace Operations Group.

“The target group is the 567th, but beyond that it becomes a word-of-mouth type event and squadrons can bring guests along,” said 1st Lt. Robert Wilson, 92nd COS chief of training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. “[Ortiz] is still in touch with a lot of folks over here. Then a lieutenant got in touch with us about our hunt event and we included [50th SCS] on the invite.”

Normally, the 567th COG hosts a ‘hunt’ exercise every two months to keep their operators sharp.

The hunt involves teams of cyber defenders identifying “adversary activities” on friendly networks. If they notice such behavior or recognize a potentially

PUBLIC NOTICE REQUEST FOR COMMUNITY RESPONSE REGARDING ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION ACTIVITIES PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule #3 (UCMR 3) sampling results in public wells prompted additional sampling of private and municipal off-base drinking water wells near Peterson Air Force Base (AFB). Treatment systems have been installed at private and municipal wells used as drinking water sources. In addition, Peterson AFB conducted a Preliminary Assessment to identify any potential on base sources. Based on the results the Preliminary Assessment and follow on Site Investigations, it was confirmed that Peterson AFB had PFOS/PFOA impacts to groundwater. These recent Air Force Environmental Restoration Program (ERP) investigations have identified four sites that warrant further evaluation.

The Air Force’s ERP provides for the environmental cleanup of contamination whose release is attributable to the Air Force, including immediate actions taken to remove imminent threats to human health and the environment. Public involvement is a key aspect of the ERP and is the reason for this notice.

Peterson AFB is seeking public input on its ERP to enable meaningful community involvement and to address community needs, concerns, and expectations through face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews, and an online survey.
