PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Students from the inaugural U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School Space Test Fundamentals course, Class 21-1, visited Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, recently.

The STF course curriculum included a two-week tour of Schriever AFB; Buckley AFB, Colorado; U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado; Kirtland AFB, New Mexico; and Vandenberg AFB, California, before a final capstone project that tied the whole course together and validated the desired learning objectives.

Since 1951, the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, California has taught students how to predict, test, and validate data gathered from flight test missions using the newest technologies and information. In response to a sharpened focus across the Department of Defense on the space warfighting domain, the first STF course began Jan. 4, 2021.

“TPS trains and educates primarily pilots and engineers to systematically and rigorously evaluate weapons system performance against design requirements,” said Kevin Rhoades, Space Training and Readiness Delta (Provisional) deputy. “The school also evaluates new and innovative technologies to determine their possible application to future weapons systems. At the beginning of this year, the USAF TPS began it’s first-ever ‘Space Test Fundamentals course’ to meet the needs of the U.S. Space Force. COTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. — Who is the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T)? This debate is frequently held especially in the sports world. Is it Tom Brady or Joe Montana? Is it Lebron James, Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan?

Is it the greats of the past or the greats of today? What these arguments miss is the appreciation of greatness each individual had at the highest levels of their profession during their respective eras.

I see the same debate being held over the greatness of the Air Force of the past, versus the Air Force of the present. So often old heads tell “back in the day” war stories about the Air Force of the past and how great it was, how today’s Air Force is “soft” or “weak” or too accommodating or cares too much.

How in the past they had to endure the harshness of bad leadership, bad policies or just poor organizational culture that led to a less effective and less enjoyable Air Force experience.

It is worn like a badge of honor then spun into tales of the “good ole” days. All while making others feel like they missed out, that the best days of the Air Force are far behind and never to return.

Today’s Air Force is enduring a lot of change. From hair regulations, to physical fitness standards, operating during a pandemic, the list goes on. We know that change is hard, and change management is even harder.

Our Chief of Staff’s action orders to “Accelerate Change or

Lose” makes change part of our Air Force DNA to drive mission effectiveness. If we can drive a positive change the Air Force of today will be more capable than the Air Force of the past.

Growing up in the Air Force during what some would call the “good ole” days wasn’t all that it’s made out to be. In the old Air Force, no one cared about work-life harmony, segments of our force felt ostracized for being different, toxic leaders and long hours were part of “embracing the suck.”

Looking back at those times I’m happy they are in the past.

The Air Force of the past was a product of its time, a time long since passed.

“In my eyes, today’s Air Force is the G.O.A.T.” For those of us that have been here a while it’s good for us to recognize the Air Force we grew up in no longer exists and experiences of the past, for better or worse, has armed us with critical information allowing us to positively influence the today’s Air Force, making it an Air Force we always wanted to be part of.

Now is our chance to appreciate the greatness of today’s Air Force and how far we have come and how far we still have to go to become an even more effective fighting force. In my eyes, today’s Air Force is the G.O.A.T.

The crew also represents the “everyday hero” in the world. U.S. Space Force Master Sgt. Crystal Ebert, 750th Operations Support Squadron superintendent was the Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit technician on crew.

She said people don’t need the status of NBA superstar LeBron James or tennis phenom Serena Williams to create change.

“You don’t necessarily have to strive to be the best athlete or pop star,” Ebert said. “What we do here is an everyday career and that’s a more tangible goal for young people to grasp.”

Supporting the 1st SOPS celebration of African American space operators was the 2nd Space Operations Squadron of Space Delta 8.

Carmilya Jones, Space Delta 8 standardization and evaluation deputy chief, said the group is a great representation of the future and she’s grateful to witness such an event.

“For people of African descent to come together in one room is huge,” Jones said. “This [crew] definitely shows the Space Force values diversity and that we have capable people on billion-dollar systems that ensure the nation’s security, accurate position and timing and that our civilian community is well-taken care of.”

Johnson remains grateful the group came to fruition and continues to push forward goals of representation.

“We’re a small segment of the big picture and we’re trying to get the momentum going for others,” Johnson said.

JTF-SD completes collaborative SACT Staff Report Joint Task Force-Space Defense Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Joint Task Force-Space Defense completed its first 2021 Sprint Advanced Concept Training series that featured increased collaboration with sister component Combined Forces Space Component Command/Combined Space Operations Center April 9.

JTF-SD officials conduct three SACTs annually to further Space Command’s task to compete and win by maintaining a continuous and perpetual cycle advancing readiness and lethality of current and future space capabilities and warfighting forces to meet the demands of a dynamic and rapidly changing operational environment. Each training session scales in complexity and collaboration depending on defined objectives. For example they can be narrowly focused on the National Space Defense Center operations or expand to include collaboration throughout the combatant command.

This particular SACT provided the environment to collaborate with CFSCC/ CSpOC to further integrate the JTF-SD Commercial Operations cell.

“The JCO model developed in 2020 Sprint Advanced Concept Training series significantly improves commercial integration and mission effectiveness by maximizing operational flexibility and innovation across a multitude of commercial partners,” said Space Force Col. Scott Brodeur, JTF-SD director of operations and NSDC director. “I am really proud of the team and their efforts to get us to this point. They proved we can generate a wide range of protect and defend notifications through commercial sources that are inherently shareable.”

The cell’s unclassified environment enabled the operators to share indication and warning information with commercial partners and to the CFSCC/CSpOC who then coordinates with allies and other international partners.

This SACT validated the ability of the NSDC and CSpOC to work together to quickly disseminate space domain awareness from the JCO to our allies, including Australia, Canada, Great Britain and France, at the unclassified perspective.

The cell’s efforts also serve as a prototype deployment floor, allowing rapid data and application integration at unclassified levels prior to on ramping and integrating with classified data streams.

“The JTF-SD Commercial Operations cell is realizing our vision and actively contributing valuable operational space domain awareness augmentation data to the JTF-SD/NSDC through daily collaboration,” said Army Brig. Gen. Tom James, JTF-SD commander. “We are excited to see how we can build upon their successes and further integrate this construct across our operations.”

SACTs have been a key component since this organization originally stood up as the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center in 2015, renamed to NSDC in 2016 with the JTF-SD established as its headquarters in 2019.

As competitors started fielding counter-space capabilities, leaders thought it prudent to create a center that would be focused on protecting and defending while bringing together the Department of Defense, the intelligence community, the National Reconnaissance Office, and representatives across the services with space domain equities to plan, test and experiment in an unprecedented unity of effort.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron recently completed a Restricted Area Parking study that examines parking issues in the North and West Portal restricted areas at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

They are launching a campaign with hopes of educating personnel on available parking at both portals and how to best use each area based on their specific work location.

Engineer, said between both the North and West portal parking lots, the base has adequate parking for personnel working within the RA, but people rely too heavily on one.

“Our study shows a large portion of the population traditionally parks in the North Portal [RA] parking lot regardless of where they work,” O’Gallagher said.

“This has created additional stresses on the availability of parking spaces within the North Portal lot while, at the same time, reducing the demand in the West Portal parking lot.

parking is going to once again become a perceived problem and we want to proactively begin to change the mindset before manning returns to 100%,” Cullen said.

The North Portal RA parking lot contains 1,810 spots, about 45% of available slots, while the West Portal RA lot has 2,180 stalls, or 55% of parking.

The 50th CES studies showed the

North Portal is typically at 100% usage while the West Portal lot sits at 75% occupancy.

“During normal non-COVID[-19] operations, the North Portal parking lot was chronically full,” O’Gallagher said. “One of our civil engineers studied the parking lot demands as compared to the number of personnel that typically would be expected to work within individual buildings. This evaluation indicated Schriever personnel would be better served by parking in different

lots based on their duty location within the RA.” The 50th CES suggested personnel in blue shaded building blocks, displayed in the graphic, park in the North RA parking lot. Personnel in the green shaded building blocks should park at the West Portal lot.

The suggested moves would put usage at the West Portal around 91% while the North Portal would drop to 80%.

Parking in the appropriate section would be less than a 10-minute walk

to and from personnel’s respective locations.

“We are all creatures of habit and we do things a certain way because we may not know the alternative,” Cullen said.

“The purpose of the parking campaign is to “bust” such myths. Depending on the specific building, walk times or travel distances could be reduced by simply parking in a different lot.”

Air Force unveils new mission statement

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Air Force released its new mission statement: To fly, fight, and win … airpower anytime, anywhere. This change emphasizes the primary competitive advantage and capabilities airpower provides to the nation and joint operations.

The ability to fight and win with airpower is key to facing emerging competitors and near-peer adversaries, according to service leaders.

“As we developed this new mission statement, we consulted Airmen from across the entire spectrum — enlisted, officers, reservists, guardsmen and civilians,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr.

“Every Airman, from every career field, is directly responsible

for delivering, supporting, launching and driving airpower.”

Since the domain of space falls under the Space Force, the Air Force can now focus solely on airpower and maintain a sustained focus on core air domain missions.

With a Total Force of more than 689,000 personnel, Airmen work to support all aspects of airpower, which includes five core missions: air superiority; global strike; rapid global mobility; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; and command and control.

Airpower also requires people and resources dedicated to unit readiness, base

infrastructure and talent management.

The chief master sergeant of the Air Force emphasized that all Airmen, no matter what Air Force specialty code they serve in, play an important role in generating military airpower for the nation.

“As the new mission statement was formulated, it was important to us that all Airmen see where they fit in,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “Every Airman, from every career field, is directly responsible for delivering, supporting, launching and driving airpower, which is the culmination of our diverse specialties, expertise and capabilities that make up our great Air Force.”

Brown also underscored the importance of the Total Force in making American airpower a reality.

“Delivering airpower for our nation requires more than just aircraft,” Brown added. “It requires Total Force Airmen — active duty, Guard, Reserve, civilians — in all Air Force specialties working together as a seamless team to operate, maintain and enable our mission and bring the unique capabilities and effects of airpower to bear.”

In order to accomplish the mission of airpower, Air Force leaders call on Airmen to accelerate change and to think about future challenges before they are in front of them.

“Our national security is not just on the shoulders of the chief of staff of the Air Force or other service chiefs,” Brown said during his 2021 Air Force Association Aerospace Warfare Symposium fireside chat. “It’s all of us together that have an interest in this; and the way we work together on this, and make progress together and understand what’s out there in the future, and really appreciate that, will help all of us move faster.”

The 21st Medical Group will be transitioning from using TRICARE Online (TOL) and Secure Messaging System to MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, April 24. MHS GENESIS Patient Portal is a secure website that allows you to access your health information, schedule appointments, and exchange messages with your care team anytime and anywhere.

In preparation for the new MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, login to milConnect and create your DS Logon. Beneficiaries with an existing DS Logon should upgrade their account to Premium Access. A link to the “My Access Center” is available on the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal landing page to direct patients on how to get their DS Logon credentials. COVID-19 point of testing location

The Peterson AFB COVID-19 Point of Testing location will be open Monday and Wednesday from 8 to 11 a.m. for appointments and tier testing. This time change allows a smoother transition for the afternoon vaccinations.

COVID-19 vaccine is available for eligible personnel

Effective immediately, the 21st MDG is opening eligibility to all patients ages 16 and

older. The 21 MDG is administering the PfizerBioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. It is a 2-dose vaccine series and the second dose is required 21 days after the initial dose.

You MUST have an appointment to receive the vaccine. Walk-ins will not be accepted. To book your vaccine appointment, please visit https://informatics-stage.health.mil/COVAX/ or call 719-524-2273, option 1 (patients should anticipate longer than normal wait times if booking by phone).

Individuals who are 16 or 17 will need a legal guardian present during the vaccination appointment.

Vaccine appointments are limited at this time, but will expand as more vaccines become available. We appreciate your patience during this process.

Safety 411: PMV-2 focus

The Spring PMV-2 Focus runs until May 21, 2021 and is intended to highlight motorcycle safety and ensure all military riders know the requirements. The Motorcycle Unit Safety Tracking Tool (MUSTT) and Unit Motorcycle Safety Representative (MSR's) are vital in helping Airmen mitigate risks inherent to riding a motorcycle.

From novice to seasoned motorcycle rider, proper training can make a difference in the rider’s life and overall safety of those around. Riding a motorcycle is an inherently dangerous activity; however, the risks can be mitigated with preparation and awareness.

If you ride, please contact your MSR to ensure your training is up-to-date. If you don’t ride, look twice for motorcycles while operating a vehicle.

Tricare Selectee Group A notice

As of Jan. 1, 2021, TRICARE Select Group A retirees are required to pay enrollment fees each month, with the exception of those medically retired (and family members) and survivors of deceased active duty service members.

Group A retirees who were dis-enrolled from TRICARE Select due to nonpayment have through June 30, 2021, request reinstatement of coverage back to Jan. 1, 2021, and pay enrollment fees back to that date. For the TRICARE West Region, beneficiaries can request reinstatement using HNFS’ TRICARE Select Reinstatement Form or by calling their customer service line at 1-844-866-WEST (9378).

Fee payments must be made via allotments, when feasible. Those who do not receive retiree pay or whose retiree pay does not cover the enrollment fee may set up electronic funds transfer or recurring credit/debit card payments.

Terrance McWilliams fell in love with Colorado Springs while stationed at Fort Carson in 1996. He knew it was the place he wanted to call home when he retired — and he made it so in 2007. Following his military retirement, he joined El Pomar Foundation to oversee military and veteran services, and he also serves on several prominent state and community boards, including with Mt. Carmel Veteran Services Center. McWilliams will discuss how his core values have shaped his career and will share his personal observations on how the community addresses issues surrounding race.
