RAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — In April, as much of the world was cooped up indoors, waiting out the first, deadly batch of cases during the coronavirus pandemic, I was binge watching every episode of the classic American TV show “M*A*S*H.” One of my favorite episodes follows the gang at the 4077th through 1951 in a series of chronological snapshots — doctors innovate a machine to treat kidneys, a knitting project evolves from a potholder into a blanket and Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III bets overconfidently on a Brooklyn Dodgers team that lost on the final day of the season.

Revisiting the show was a nostalgia trip from my childhood. It was a respite in what ranks among the most tumultuous years of our lives.

Recently, I looked back over 2020, taking some snapshots of my own.

On New Year’s Day, I hiked up a nearby hill to watch the sunrise. I had no idea how many times I would return to that same spot in 2020.

H JTF-SD members transfer to Space Force H

The Joint Task Force - Space Defense is the latest organization to conduct its transfer ceremony into the U.S. Space Force at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado Oct. 23, 2020. During the ceremony, 11 field grade officers took the Oath of Office, signifying their official transfer from the United States Air Force into the United States Space Force.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Eleven Joint Task Force Space Defense field grade officers transferred to the U.S. Space Force Oct. 23, 2020, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado.

The JTF-SD’s mission is to conduct unified action with mission partners, space superiority operations to deter aggression, defend capability and defeat adversaries through the continuum of conflict.

“This is a momentous occasion for us,” Brodeur said.

“Today is a day we should look back on and be proud of what’s about to happen as some of the first senior leaders we will have in the Space Force transfer.”

The transferees followed General John Raymond, USSF Chief of Space Operations, Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, USSF senior enlisted advisor, 86 U.S. Air Force Academy graduates, junior officers and enlisted space professionals who joined the Space Force in the last few months.

JTF-SD leadership invited the Space Force’s newest members’ friends and family to the ceremony.

“This was a great opportunity for friends and family

to witness a historic event,” said Col. Marcus Jackson, National Space Defense Center deputy director.

“Transferring is a great growth opportunity and I’m proud to be serving in the U.S. Space Force.”

The transfer comes nearly two months after company grade officers and enlisted personnel were able to transfer into the USSF. The process for officers is different as they must resign their commission within the USAF and be reconfirmed into the USSF. “These officers believe in the mission and vision of the Space Force in the future,” Brodeur said. “They get to define the next evolution of the Space Force. They are going to lead us into the next generation and define the space warfighting culture.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — October is Distracted Driving Awareness Month reminding Airmen to focus on the road while driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is anything that diverts a driver’s attention away from the road. This can include texting, talking, eating and more.

“You need to be prepared and ready to react appropriately to different scenarios and you

can’t do that if you’re distracted.”

“It’s important to focus on the road at all times while driving,” said Tech. Sgt. Robert Cook, Peterson-Schriever Garrison noncommissioned officer in charge of occupational safety. “Pay attention to what’s going on around you.”

There were over 15,000 accidents caused by distracted driving in 2019. Additionally, most drivers involved in these types of accidents were 21-30 years old, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

If cited for distracted driving, drivers can receive a class two misdemeanor traffic offense. The first offense will cost $300, but if cited again, a ticket can be anywhere from $300 to $1,000 and may include up to a year in prison.

In Colorado, it is prohibited for drivers under 18 to use a cell phone or hands-free device while driving. Additionally, if a driver is cited for negligent or reckless acts, they can be criminally prosecuted in accordance with Colorado law.

As an Airman, there are more consequences for distracted driving.

even if the conduct doesn’t amount to a violation of the [Uniformed Code of Military Justice],” said Capt. Airmen encouraged to practice firearm safety

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — While owning a firearm is a right to American citizens, it’s important to practice proper firearm storage and safety while on any military installation.

Failing to follow proper firearm safety can result in a negligent discharge, which occurs when a weapon fires without intention.

A negligent discharge can result in serious bodily injury or death, said Tech. Sgt. Brian Litney, 50th Security Forces Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of combat arms.

“To ensure the safety of the base populace, the Schriever violence prevention office provides

free gun locks to Airmen.”

“There are rules and regulations when having a privately-owned weapon on a military installation,” he said. “The weapon has to be registered through pass and registration.

Once it’s registered you can bring it on base after receiving approval from your commander. It must be stored properly — in a safe, locked or out of reach.”

According to the University of California, Davis Health, there were 39,740 firearm deaths in the U.S. in 2018.

“We really want to enforce and stress weapon safety because most accidents that happen [can be] prevented if we follow the proper safety rules,” Litney said.

Airmen who live in the dormitories must register their weapon with the 21st Security Forces Squadron and store it in the base armory. Airmen can check out the firearm when they intend to use it, but must check it back in afterward. Under no circumstances can a firearm be kept in the dormitories.

To ensure the safety of the base populace, the Schriever violence prevention office provides free gun locks to Airmen. Locks can be obtained from any first sergeant on the base.

6 and 50th Space Communications Squadron first sergeant. “We are handing out the gun locks to promote firearm safety.”

Litney offered the following tips for firearm owners: • Clear and secure the weapons system when not in use.

• Keep the firearm out of reach of those who don’t need access.

• Always treat the firearm as if it’s loaded.

• Practice good muzzle discipline and understand where it’s pointed.

Litney said failing to follow proper firearm safety and failing to register a weapon on base is a serious offense.

Punishment can vary and is determined by the garrison commander and the SFS commander.

“Weapons systems are a tool, not a toy,” he said. “People have lost their lives [for] being negligent with weapons systems. We just hope everyone understands the consequences of not properly handling your weapon.”

Air Force encourages energy awareness

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Every year, the Air Force participates in the Nation’s October Energy Action Month initiative.

The initiative is an effort promoting sustainability and energy efficiency while encouraging the smart use of energy, water and transportation resources. This initiative aims to increase attention to energy use and to develop energy efficient behaviors that will continue throughout the year.

Although October is the official Energy Action Month for the Air Force, the goal is that every Air Force employee — Airman, civilian and contractor — incorporates energy awareness into their daily activities and adopts energy-saving habits and practices that enable Schriever’s goal of reducing energy and water consumption.

With cooler weather upon us, people may have already started working on ways to save energy during the fall and winter months.

Now is the perfect time to focus on saving energy. October is a time not only to be aware, but to act.

Energy is critical to Schriever’s ability to accomplish its mission. Schriever’s goal is to foster a culture that prioritizes energy optimization and water management. Part of the base’s mission assurance is through energy assurance. Another mission is to overcome the challenges posed by vulnerabilities to the bases energy security by pursuing the three goals of our energy program: • Improve resilience by ensuring we have the ability to continue operations, recover from energy interruptions and sustain the mission.

• Optimize demand by integrating energy efficient technologies to stabilize and reduce energy demand.

• Assure supply by diversifying the types of energy used and securing the quantities necessary to perform the missions.

Schriever is making progress toward these requirements by implementing energy and water-management projects throughout the installation.

Each October, the Air Force recognizes Energy Awareness Month to promote energy resilience and acknowledge the critical role energy plays in mission assurance. As the battlefield grows increasingly complex, supplying power to our forces safely and reliably remains fundamental to our global mission.

Whether these projects are implemented base-wide or in individual facilities, every action Team Schriever takes contributes toward strengthening the security and resilience of the base infrastructure.

This initiative is designed to increase attention to energy use, and to develop energy efficient behaviors that will continue throughout the year. A simple step everyone on Team Schriever can implement immediately is to turn off your computer monitors and room lights at the end of the work day.

Here are additional examples of ways you can help save energy: • Appliance reduction: Look around your workspace. Do you have a refrigerator or coffee maker in your work area? How many personal appliances can be removed or consolidated in common areas like a break room? Reducing energy usage by reducing the number of appliances and machines you use can yield significant energy savings.

• Computer log off: Since personnel at many installations are advised not to turn off computers, it’s important to log off. This ensures that computers will enter energy-sav-

• Temperature Control: Climate control set points can have a major impact on energy use. Most bases use settings of 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer.

Be familiar with your base’s temperature set point policy. Rather than increasing energy demand with space heaters or fans, dress appropriately for the temperature in your facility. If your building is too cool in the summer or too cold in the winter, the Air Force could be wasting energy.

• Inform your facility manager: Report incorrect temperature set point, leaky faucets, blocked air vents, cracked windows and other problems to your facility manager or civil engineer customer service • Outdoor conservation: If you notice a broken sprinkler head wasting water or area lights left on in a parking lot during the day, report it to your local civil engineer customer service.

• No waste: Don’t turn a blind eye to prob-

lems. If you see something that doesn’t need to be on, turn it off. If you see a problem, report it.

Energy is critical to the Department of the Air Force’s ability to accomplish its mission — to provide the global presence necessary to ensure stability, deter potential adversaries and present options in times of crisis.

For the second year in a row, the Air Force’s Energy Action Month theme is “energy able… mission capable.” It serves as a call to action for Team Schriever to practice energy efficient habits in their daily lives.

While individual efforts may seem small, when combined with others they can have big impact across the installation and the Air Force.

Saving energy eliminates the use of resources that are valuable in sustaining the mission. Some form of energy is used to produce everything we use in our work day.

The paper we print or write on is derived using energy. The computers most of us use in our day-to-day business use energy.

So, any reduction of resources used during the work day contributes to savings for the Air Force. These reductions or conservation efforts eventually translate into financial opportunities for the Peterson-Schriever Garrison, Air Force and United States government.

Diversifying energy supplies to incorporate alternative energy sources, like renewables, increases the base’s resilience so operations can continue in the event of a commercial grid failure.

Schriever plays a critical role in promoting readiness, generating the force structure necessary for mission success and enabling combat operations. Transforming energy usage and innovating base systems improves our energy resilience, reducing vulnerabilities to Team Schriever and providing a reliable source of energy and water to Schriever facilities.

In February and March, Travis AFB was among the first places in the nation to confront the coronavirus pandemic as Americans quarantined at the base’s Westwind Inn hotel.

When the pandemic began uprooting all of our lives in mid-March, putting many out of work and leaving others telecommuting, our plans for the future turned into question marks. A goal I set at the end of 2018–to hike to the summit of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park this summer–vanished.

In April, as I stayed indoors and watched “M*A*S*H,” I realized so much about the pandemic was beyond my control: the economic turbulence, working from home, the closure of parks and trails I enjoyed and the vacant Bay Area concert venues in which I’ve spent so much time.

I focused instead on what was within my control. It’s been a time for self-reflection and introspection. I’ve poured my energy into my mental, emotional and spiritual health. My friend called life during the pandemic “the indefinite temporary.” We don’t know how long it will last, but we know it won’t be forever.

In March, April and May, I hiked trails close to home, such as my New Year’s Day spot, watching the lush, green landscapes of winter recede into dry yellow and brown hills.

I grew tired of hiking the same areas, but worked to appreciate the fact that I could take refuge in the trails, that I was healthy and that I had a safe place to be during a pandemic.

The summer months were a time to connect with my values after the death of

George Floyd, and the nationwide Black Lives Matter marches and protests. I read and learned, working to evolve my ideas and viewpoints in the same way I was my own internal life.

As the protests lasted into late summer, the yellow and brown hills through which I hike became prime real estate for a voracious and deadly fire season.

I limited my hiking because of the poor air quality, but that sacrifice is minimal compared to others, some of whom lost so much more.

The fires and smoke meant even more time inside. This time, I watched

the Stanley Cup playoffs. Unlike Maj. Winchester, I thankfully did not bet on my own “boys of summer,” the Colorado Avalanche, who were a favorite to play for the Stanley Cup, but instead exited the postseason earlier than expected.

I’ve been fortunate that I have not felt the impact of the calamity of 2020 to the same extent as others. I feel as though I’ve hit the accelerator pad on years of emotional, mental and spiritual progress. My time out on the hiking trails creates a space similar to meditation, a place to get distance from the plethora of problems 2020 presents, to clear my mind and reflect.

I don’t know what lies on the other side of our “indefinite temporary,” but I feel like the work I’ve done in 2020 has prepared me for it. It’s made me discover resources and depths within myself I didn’t know I had.

It’s given me gratitude and perspective.

And it’s given me resolve. Half Dome is not going anywhere. I don’t know when it will happen, but I remain committed to standing on top of it.

As we look ahead to 2021, Col. Sherman Potter’s words from the “M*A*S*H” episode convey my hopes for us all: “Here’s to the new year. May she be a damn sight better than the old one.”

New avenue for P-S GAR commander questions If you have questions or concerns for the garrison commander and you would like to communicate anonymously, use the new “Questions?” feature on Schriever’s Air Force Connect app. The commander will answer the questions on a regular basis through Garrison wide emails and social media.

Air Force reduces tuition assistance The fiscal year limit for Military Tuition Assistance has decreased from $4,500 to $3,750, effective immediately.

The credit hour limits remain the same at $250 per semester hour and $166.66 per quarter hour. All TA applications will be routed using the standard procedures on the Air Force Virtual Education Center, and can be submitted up to 45 days in advance of the start of the course.
