OINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-CHAPMAN TRAINING ANNEX, Texas — At the age of 9, my grandmother told me a story I have never been able to get over. She told me this story in frustration because of how I was acting while shopping in a grocery store. I was a rambunctious child, always wanted to touch everything and I constantly had questions. My grandmother was wonderful and always had love for me, but I could tell I was trying her patience that day. She told me a story about when she was a year younger than me. She was smacked in the face by a woman in a grocery store for talking too much. Being inquisitive, I could not understand what she was saying. Who was the person who smacked her? Where were her parents; my great-grandma or grandpa? I asked my grandmother and she explained she did not know the woman and she was smacked because she was translating English to Spanish for my great-grandmother. She said the woman yelled, “You speak English in this country or get out.” I then asked in anger, “Why didn’t you or bisabuela do anything to that lady?” My grandma smiled and said nothing could be done back then.

I started off with this story to explain what a large portion of the Mexican population endured and still endures today. This incident was the reason my grandmother refused to teach any of her children Spanish. Also, she didn’t want them to have an accent that was perceived as “ignorant.” I can attest to this because I have been told numerous times I do not sound Mexican. My mother told me plenty of stories of how she was treated in high school. My father was involved

Schriever showcases diversity, inclusion in Space Force By Marcus Hill Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Since its inception Dec. 20, 2019, the U.S. Space Force continues to set the bar high for diversity and inclusion. “We have a lot of strength in our diversity and we pull from a lot of different walks of life,” said Tech. Sgt. Latoya Walker, Schriever Air Force Base equal opportunity specialist and advisor. “When different demographics are able to come together as one, we build our strength within that diversity and inclusion frame.”

The Department of the Air Force, which supports both the Air Force and Space Force, stood up a diversity and inclusion task force in June. The task force addresses racial, ethnic and other demographic disparities and their impact on personnel, according to the U.S. Space Force website. In June, Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, USSF Chief of Space Operations, addressed the importance of having an experienced force as well as a diverse and inclusive one. “We have an opportunity to get this right from the beginning and we are committed to doing so,” Raymond wrote in June in a letter to service members. “We must build diversity and inclusion into our ‘cultural DNA’ — make it one of the bedrock strengths of our service.” The Space Force showcased its talented members, no-

crew of space operators gain satellite control authority of GPS satellite vehicle number 76. “I’m all about female empowerment, so it was so cool to be a part of that,” said Airman 1st Class Larissa Contreras, 2nd SOPS satellite systems operator. “I remember [our 2nd SOPS, all-female crew] going around and speaking about [that moment] and it was such a great thing to be involved with.” For Contreras, who is Mexican-American, the moment held other historical value as it also showcased diversity. While many of Contreras’ family members represent the various Armed Forces, she said she’s the first one to join the Space Force. She said being Mexican-American in the Space Force offers the opportunity to become a beacon to other MexicanAmericans who consider joining the military. Airman 1st Class Daryl Griffin, 4th SOPS space-ground link system operator, shared similar sentiments when he became one of the first African-American Airmen to transfer to the Space Force. The move not only affords Griffin the chance to show his talents as a systems operator to leadership, it allows him to be an example and highlight a vast selection of career options within the military. “I feel like this gives me purpose and I hope that it can be motivation for all kids who look like me,” he said. “Joining the Space Force is a moment that will live on forever and I hope it can help someone else write their story.” Walker believes it’s important younger people and those who consider joining the military understand the inclusion Space Force provides. Space and system operators typically aren’t familiar career fields to minorities and Walker said she’s grateful that is changing. “Anyone can [succeed in] what they strive to do. As long as they remain consistent,” Walker said.

Pumpkin patch, activities providing sense of normalcy By Marcus Hill Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Child Development Center’s pumpkin patch on Oct. 23 was the first family-involvement event since March. The coronavirus pandemic stymied numerous events at the 50th Force Support Squadron’s Child Development Center and stifled many programs offered its children. Tara Archuleta, the CDC’s training and curriculum specialist, said the pumpkin patch provided a sense of normalcy for parents and kids. “We had to do something to make the families feel more involved and to boost morale,” Archuleta said. “The [events] toward the end of the year — Fall Fest and our events in December — are our popular ones. We wanted a bit of normalcy for the start of fall.” During the event, kids painted pumpkins and performed experiments with them such as filling them with baking soda and vinegar, which caused a chemical reaction that made the pumpkin fizz from the mixture. Parents also selected pumpkins to either take home to paint or carve.

Staff Sgt. Megan Aycock, Colorado Springs Regional Command Post emergency actions controller, had the opportunity to allow her daughter, Mabry, 1, to enjoy something outside of their home. “Going out in town, I know I wouldn’t necessarily feel as safe as I did with an on-base event,” Aycock said. “My daughter is an only child, so it’s important for her to get out and have those interactions with younger people.” Archuleta realizes the importance of the pumpkin patch, not just for adults, but for kids to have a sense of normal life. Allowing kids to release their energy outdoors allows CDC caregivers to do their jobs efficiently. It also gives kids the chance to communicate with other children, Archuleta said. “It was nice for kids to interact with their peers,” Archuleta said. “The [caregivers] are so passionate about taking care of those kids and treat the kids like they’re their own.” The CDC continues to slowly implement more family involvement events as well as playground activities such as riding tricycles and scooters. The CDC is scheduled to host a recyclable art day in November and will hold a gingerbread house building day in December.

not come far enough. The first instance was a high school party I was invited to by a girl from another school. Two of my cousins and I were there a little over 10 minutes when I was faced with a shotgun. We were called a racial slur and told to get out. I kindly apologized, we put our hands up and walked away. I wish I could say this was the only time it’s happened and I wish it was the only time I could say I had to deal with racism; but it wasn’t. I was confronted with racism multiple times in the military, too. I was selected for a deployment to Ecuador in 2007. I was excited and thought I was chosen for my skills as a mechanic. A few senior mechanics who were also going on the deployment later told me, “You’re going to be the translator for us.” I told them I do not speak Spanish very well and they responded with, “That’s the only reason we put you on this trip.” Again, I wish that was the only time I faced racism in the military, but sadly it wasn’t. After that incident, my grandmother’s story came to mind. I then realized what she meant when she said, “You couldn’t do anything about it then.” My heart sunk when I realized how far we have to go as a culture. After

that point, I told myself I would not stand for off-colored remarks; but the past has left me a little scarred. I was stuck with being “too brown” and “not Mexican enough.” It hurts that my subconscious knows to keep my guard up when I’m around white people. It saddens me that one of the first thoughts I had when I saw my daughter for the first time was, “I’m glad she came out with more of her mother’s color.” Her mother has a light complexion. I just want people to understand my story is not unique. Your minority brothers and sisters in arms can most likely echo my story. If you take time to know their past you can better understand their current emotions during this turbulent time. Pains of the past are passed on and knowing this will help you know your troops. Hopefully, one day I can reflect on my grandmother’s story as just that; a story of the past. The military has shown me racism but it has also armed me with the tools and resiliency to overcome those transgressions. I want to echo the words of Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria, “There is a better idea… the power of diversity… if you can’t treat someone with dignity and respect, then you need to get out.” I have hope in my heart and I can see the change happening. I know that I won’t stand for racism and I won’t ever standby and allow what happened to my grandmother to ever happen again.

El Paso County reverts to Stage I fire restrictions

El Paso County reverts to Stage I restrictions and will remain in this stage until conditions and resourcing warrant a change. Stage I’s guidelines are: • Outdoor blasting, welding and torches: Allowed with caution. • Campfires in developed campgrounds: Allowed in permanently constructed fire grates, charcoal frills and wood burning stoves. • Model rockets: Not allowed. • Public prescribed burning: Not allowed. • Outdoor smoking: No smoking outside unless in an enclosed building or vehicle. • Sale of fireworks: Not allowed. • Outdoor cooking (private property): Allowed if smaller than 3 feet in diameter and less than 2 feet high. • Outdoor fires at residence: Allowed if fire is contained within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, indoor fire places or wood burning stoves.

November 1-8 is “Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 100,000 police-reported vehicle crashes each year are caused by drowsy driving, resulting in 1,550 deaths and 71,000 injuries. Here are some tips to help prevent you or someone you love from becoming a statistic. • Get adequate sleep (7 to 9 hours a night). • Schedule proper breaks — about every 100 miles or 2 hours. • Arrange for a travel companion, if possible. • Avoid alcohol and sedating medications.

ON BASE Dependent ID shortage at MPF

The Military Personnel Flight is experiencing a shortage of dependent IDs. The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs, only new dependents who have experience a change in status will be issue a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided by MPF. Once the Next Gen cards are functional, MPF will start issuing them based on priority and availability. For more information, call the MPF at 719-567-5900.

Force Development Flight relocates

The Schriever Force Development Flight and Education and Training Center is now relocated throughout Bldg. 210 as their office is undergoing renovations. To mitigate disruption to the shared customer service spaces that the Force Development Flight will occupy, members are encouraged to call ahead for all services, e.g. career assistance advisor, education counseling, tuition assistance and GI Bill.
