PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Schriever Air Force Base, Peterson Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station received new names during the renaming ceremony at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, July 26, 2021.

The installations are now named Schriever Space Force Base, Peterson Space Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station.

The bases’ names changed as part of the overall initiative by the Department of the Air Force to establish a unique identity and culture within the U.S. Space Force, and more accurately reflect the important space missions performed by Airmen and Guardians stationed there.

U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, Space Operations Command commander, presided over the ceremony, along with U.S. Space Force Col. Shay Warakomski, Peterson-Schriever Garrison commander.

“Although we are celebrating our new designation as Space Force installations today, we are also honoring the rich history we’ve built here on the Front Range and in the Pikes Peak Region,” said Whiting.

“Our ties and connections to the past are indelible as Peterson, Schriever and Cheyenne Mountain have long served as the heart, eyes and ears of our national security interest in space.”

Peterson SFB’s history, and it’s evolution from air defense to space warfighting missions, dates back to World War II. Peterson SFB has played a central role in U.S. and allied national defense for decades. Today, Peterson SFB maintains a mission centered on the ability to defy gravity for operations in the air and space domains.

Peterson SFB provides mission support to Space Operations Command, Space Delta 2 — Space Domain Awareness, Space Delta 3 — Space Electronic Warfare and Space Delta 7 — Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance.

“It is incredibly important to illuminate our past and to celebrate the accomplishments of those who have come before us,

previous Guardians of the High Frontier, as well as recognize the community relationships both past and present that got us here today,” said Warakomski.

Like Peterson SFB, Schriever SFB has a rich history beginning in 1983. The base was previously named Falcon Air Force Station, an installation intended to provide a back-up control node for support of existing and planned satellite constellations, and to house an operations support center for NASA’s space shuttle.

Schriever SFB’s current mission centering combat power for space is executed

by Joint Task Force-Space Defense, Space Delta 6 — Cyberspace Operations, Space Delta 8 — Satellite Communications and Navigational Warfare and Space Delta 9 — Orbital Warfare.

The history of Cheyenne Mountain dates back to 1956, when the initial mission of Cheyenne Mountain was to protect the country against the Russian threat and has since evolved into what it is to today, serving as North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command's Alternate Command Center and as a training site for crew qualification.

STARBASE Peterson seeks new teachers and administrators

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Science and Technology Academy reinforcing basic aviation and space exploration (STARBASE) at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, has job opportunities available to teach science, technology, engineering and math to 5th graders.

There are two part-time instructor positions, one full-time instructor position and one full-time office manager position. STARBASE is also looking for a full-time administrative assistant. The instructor positions and office manager positions are paid.

All teaching supplies are provided by STARBASE, which means there is no cost. Schools provide transportation to and from STARBASE Peterson for students.

STARBASE was founded in the early 1990’s with the idea that students needed more “hands-on” science and math lessons to keep them excited and engaged.

STARBASE Peterson is the only STARBASE in Colorado and was established in December 2014.

We teach a Department of Defense approved, 25hour curriculum followed by activities after each lesson. We average 1,300 students that come to us from surrounding school districts, private schools and charter schools, as well as homeschool students.

We focus on Title 1 schools, since approximately 75% of their students receive free or reduced-cost lunches. Our target audience is children who fall into high-risk categories. These risks may include: being from a single parent household, changing

schools two or more times other than the normal progression, having Cs or lower grades, being from a low-income family, or repeating an earlier grade.

Students come to our STEM enrichment program either one day per week or Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We also have summer programs and outreach programs; the hours may vary.

Pacheco honored as one of 12 OAY

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Having previously been awarded Airmen of the Year by the Peterson-Schriever Garrison 2020 Annual Awards, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Giovanni Pacheco, 50th Force Support Squadron command support staff, has been chosen as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year for 2021.

“Everyone’s been telling me how huge and crazy this is, but I don’t think I’ve fully felt it — or realized it yet, honestly.”

Out of 35 enlisted Air Force nominees considered, a selection board at the Air Force’s Personnel Center ultimately recognized 12 Airmen based on superior leadership, exceptional performance and personal achievements. These esteemed Airmen represent the Air Force’s major commands, direct reporting units, field operating agencies and headquarters. They have competed up through several levels, from squadron to MAJCOM — all the way to the Air Force branch level.

The Outstanding Airman of the Year Ribbon is the highest personal ribbon of the U.S. Air Force, and is awarded to any enlisted member of the Air Force. It was created in 1968 by order of Secretary of the Air Force, Harold Brown — and the first presentation of the award occurred two years later in 1970.

In October, Pacheco will have been with the Air Force for three years.

“I’m [Airman Pacheco’s] direct supervisor, and I think he is amazing,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Eboni Bailey, 50th Force Support Squadron career development non-commissioned officer in charge. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve seen how he takes initiative — he’s willing to help his peers and set an example for others.”

Beyond his direct supervisor, Pacheco is appreciated and well-liked by his team — and has the attention of leadership. “[And] I am Schriever’s Military Personnel Flight commander, [and] SrA Pacheco is on my career development team,” added U.S. Air Force Capt. Danielle C. Cook. “I work directly with him daily with anything in regards to promotions, assignments, reenlistments and extensions. Pacheco goes above and beyond to help the customers that come into the MPF, and he does it without hope of recognition. He is an extremely humble

and hardworking individual and absolutely someone I trust to go to with any and all questions.”

Pacheco was born and raised in the “Windy City” of Chicago, Illinois, and is one of four children, with an older brother and sister and a younger brother. His father works in the electric and gas industries, and his mother is the vice president of a banking branch. Before joining the Air Force, Pacheco was enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on a full-ride, but zealously worked four jobs.

“In the summer, I would work at a camp as a recreational leader,” said Pacheco. “I would work with youth — a group of around 17 to 20 kids, co-ed. I also worked for a Journey’s shoe store. There’s Journey’s, Journey’s Kids, and Journey’s Underground — I worked at a Journey’s Underground. It’s just a smaller store, but it sounds like we were unlawfully selling shoes under the table. We weren’t.”

Additionally, Pacheco worked for a city council campaign and his fourth job was with an online marketing company.

For ON BASE EMERGENCIES When Not At A Work Station

In college, he was studying business and finance, but felt as though school really wasn’t for him.

“I was performing well, but I was bored and tired of the same old, same old — over and over again,” said Pacheco. “I didn’t feel like continuing with school, but felt that I really wanted to do something with my life.

I didn’t have an immediate family member in the Air Force [or military], but I had two cousins who were in the military, and thought, ‘Maybe I should try the Air Force?’”

And that decision seems to have been the right one.

With his latest honor, it’s obvious that Pacheco is performing not only well in the Air Force, but exceptionally well, excelling beyond his rank and grade. And being named an OAY means you’ve earned several honors and recognitions along the way.

“You have to win at one level to compete at the next,” said Pacheco. “Everyone’s been telling me how huge and crazy this is, but I don’t think I’ve fully felt it — or realized it yet, honestly.”

He may still be a bit stunned by this esteemed recognition, but it’s not a surprise to others.

“It’s not a shock to me that [Pacheco] was named one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year, it was truly deserved,” said Cook. “It shows a lot about his work ethic and drive that he was chosen — only being in the military a few short years. Pacheco would do anything for his teammates, he is one of the most selfless people I have [encountered] in my career. You can see all the work and effort he does, but he makes sure to credit the people around him for their assistance.”

“I love working with him,” added Bailey. “He’s so much fun! He’s full of life — each and every day he comes in. Our office is full of hard work, but it’s also full of laughter as well. We have a good time, but we really work hard too in the MPF.” What does Outstanding Airman Pacheco think of his decision to leave school for the Air Force?

“In the military, I’ve been able to obtain multiple trainings and job opportunities and such, rather than spend four years being a student graduating with no real-world experience,” said Pacheco. “And if I do eventually separate from the military, the Air Force is a strong, reputable [background]. One of the most important things that I’ve learned while serving is: No matter where you go, there is always leadership — whether there is a rank to it or not — but there’s always people behind those ranks or those leadership roles. Developing relationships with people, whether they are higher ranking than you or lower, is really valuable.”

Congratulations to Pacheco on this prestigious recognition, and for living up to the Air Force core values of: Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence In All We Do.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Medical Group Health Promotion office provides a multitude of programs virtually and at their classes in the Peterson Space Force Base fitness center.

The mission of Health Promotion is to provide evidence-based programs to optimize health and readiness; to foster an environment that values health and wellness, empowers individuals and organizations to lead healthy lives and to improve health, mission readiness and productivity.

“Each class is designed to not only increase awareness of the particular subject, but to also help participants learn how to overcome various challenges, how to establish goals, and how to implement small changes to not only be successful in their established goals; but how to progress in those goals safely and healthfully,” said Minda Parsons, 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron Health Promotion flight commander.

Health Promotion conducts body composition and resting metabolic rate assessments to tailor specific nutrition and exercise programs for individuals. For those with an injury or experiencing joint issues, those who want to get started or improve their fitness per-

formance; anyone who needs nutrition counseling for weight loss or to improve their overall nutrition can make an appointment with the exercise physiologist or registered dietitian.

Health Promotion’s programs include nutrition and fitness optimization, sleep hygiene, stress management, mindfulness, biomechanics of running, cooking classes and more. All classes are conducted by subject matter experts in the different fields relating to the programs.

“This is an organization with untapped potential to affect positive change throughout the garrison by promoting the four pillars of comprehensive Airman fitness,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Joel Foster, 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron commander.

“All of the programs impact more than just one area of resiliency; which is why it is such a smart idea for Airman and Guardians to take advantage of what the specialists here have to offer, whether that includes nutrition classes or a tailored fitness program. Not only is this the share path to unit resiliency and operational readiness, but it helps us to become more effective in our personal live.”

Tired of waiting at a pharmacy to pick up your medications? The Express Scripts mobile app can help you access your TRICARE pharmacy benefit and securely manage the medicine you take.

“The mobile app is convenient, accessible, and simple for you to use,” said U.S. Public Health Service Cmdr. Teisha Robertson, a pharmacist with the Pharmacy Operations Division at the Defense Health Agency.

“It’s like a pharmacy-on-the-go. It lets TRICARE beneficiaries refill and track their prescriptions anytime and anywhere.”

The mobile app is free. You can visit the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to download it.

To get started, log in to the app with your TRICARE Express Scripts username and password. If you don’t have an account, you can register for one. Once you’ve signed in on your phone, you can use the app to: • Order prescriptions. You can view which prescriptions are due for refill or renewal, and reorder medications. If you have any questions about your order, you can connect with a pharmacist 24/7.

• Track orders. You can track your current order’s estimated ship date and then track the order in transit.

• Set up automatic refills. If your medications are eligible, you can set up and manage automatic refills through the app. Express Scripts will refill and ship prescriptions when 25% of your current prescription is remaining. That way, you

never run out of medication.

• Pay bills. You can make secure payments from the mobile app. The app will show your current balance on your account.

You have several payment options as well as the option to set up automatic payments.

• Manage medications. You can set dose reminders that alert you to take your medication. This will help you stick to a steady routine and be less likely to miss a pill.

• Move prescriptions to home delivery.

If you have an existing prescription at a military or retail network pharmacy, you may be able to request home delivery. You can see which medications are eligible for home delivery within the mobile app. As stated in the TRICARE Pharmacy Program Overview, you can get up to a 90-day supply of most medications mailed to you for the applicable copayment with free standard shipping with home delivery. You can also see if your medication is covered through home delivery by using the TRICARE Formulary Search Tool. Keep in mind, some limits on home delivery may apply overseas.

Senate confirms Kendall to be Air Force Secretary

WASHINGTON — Frank Kendall won confirmation from the Senate July 26 to be the 26th Secretary of the Air Force, placing an official with decades-long service in defense issues in the top civilian job at a time when the department is navigating new global challenges and wide-reaching modernization efforts.

The vote reflected both Kendall’s well-known record in previous active duty and policy jobs and his philosophy for leading the Department of the Air Force.

With his confirmation, Kendall will be able to more fully articulate his priorities and policy preferences for how best to position the Air and Space Forces to contend with China, Russia and other strategic competitors, as

well as continue to modernize the force and adapt to budget pressures.

The broad strokes, however, are already known.

“If confirmed, my priorities would be straightforward and mirror precisely those articulated by Secretary of Defense (Lloyd) Austin as they apply to the Department of the Air Force — taking care of our people, mission performance and building teams. Our military is people first and foremost,” Kendall told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing May 25.

“With regard to mission performance, I believe the range and severity of the threats that we face and will face, the rapid pace of technological innovation, and the need to rapidly harness that technology in new operational concepts demand a sense of urgency and a like focus on getting our choices right,” he said during that hearing.

Kendall also committed during his confirmation hearing that he would ensure the U.S. Space Force’s continued growth and evolution.

The two-year-old Space Force, Kendall said in May, is “a critical contributor to our national security. If confirmed, I’ll be honored to have a role in making it a success.”

While the Senate’s action marks the first time Kendall

will work directly within the Department of the Air Force, he is hardly unfamiliar with the mission, the Department of the Defense and national security.

He previously served in a number of senior positions for the Department of Defense, including as the Pentagon’s No. 3 official for four years during the Obama administration.

Kendall assumes the seat occupied by John Roth, who has served as Acting Air Force Secretary since Jan. 20.

A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, Kendall served 10 years on active duty in the Army, a tenure that also included a stint teaching engineering at West Point. Kendall spent time in the Pentagon as director of the tactical warfare program before moving to become assistant deputy undersecretary for Strategic Defense Systems. Kendall also worked in the private sector in defense-related jobs, most notably as Raytheon’s vice president of engineering during the mid-1990s.

In addition to graduating from West Point, Kendall earned a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from The California Institute of Technology. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center as well as an MBA from C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

On June 25, 2021, DoD extended the exception to policy for certain expired Uniformed Services Identification (USID) cards to be accepted for access to DoD installations.

The extension applies only to the USIDs listed below that have a printed expiration date between January 1,

2020, and July 31, 2021, and only until the date listed for each type: • August 31, 2021, for foreign affiliates and their dependents; • October 31, 2021, dependents of Active Duty personnel, and for Reserve and National Guard personnel and their dependents; • January 31, 2022, for retirees and their dependents, and all other populations.

The staggered end dates listed above will allow for the gradual replacement of USID cards. Cards that expire after July 31, 2021, will not be accepted for physical access after their printed expiry date. This extension does not permit the acceptance of expired Common Access Cards. Any expired USID card accepted under this exception must be verified using an electronic physical access control system.

Heat-Related Illnesses Heat Cramps: Are painful, brief muscle cramps.

Muscles may spasm or jerk involuntarily. Heat cramps can occur during exercise or work in a hot environment or begin a few hours later.

Heat Exhaustion: There are two types of heat exhaustion. 1. Water depletion- Signs include excessive thirst, weakness, headache, and loss of consciousness. 2. Salt depletion- Signs include nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, and dizziness.

Heat Stroke: Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. Heat stroke can kill or cause damage to the brain and other internal organs. Heat stroke results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures — usually in combination with dehydration — which leads to failure of the body’s temperature control system.

Safe Work Practices to Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses: • Allow for acclimatization to a hot environment before any strenuous work begins. It takes roughly two weeks for an individual to acclimate to a hot environment.

• Drink plenty of water during strenuous activities especially in hot environments. An average person sweats between roughly 27 oz. to 47 oz. per hour during intense labor. To put that amount into perspective, an average water bottle holds 16.9oz.

• Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors where there is AC.
