U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Christopher Marler, 50th Security Forces Squadron Protection Level 1 area supervisor, is responsible for managing security forces personnel and incident responses on Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, within the U.S. Air Force’s and U.S. Space Force’s largest restricted area. He also responds to any alarms or incidents on the installation. The squadron provides physical security, force protection and law enforcement services to safeguard 34 protection level resources and over 7,000 personnel. The work Marler and Defenders from the 50th SFS perform is important to the garrison, USAF and USSF missions because it ensures safety and security of the personnel and resources that secure overall mission success.

Despite alignment under the USSF the contracting professionals of P-S GAR remain U.S. Air Force service-members and Department of the Air Force civilian employees, providing a unique opportunity for exposure to cross-service mission focused business leadership. As we approach the one year anniversary of P-S GAR, innovative contracting solutions have been crucial to the successful standup of both the new service branch (USSF) and the DoD’s U.S. Space Command, newest combatant command.

Both the 21st and 50th CONS construction flights have spearheaded rapid, cross-cutting construction capabilities such as the Front Range Multiple Award Construction Contract and Joint Forces Paving Contract, taking the procurement

lead for multi-state and multi-service organizations. These indefinite deliveries and indefinite quantities (IDIQs) build an expansive operational acquisition culture armed with innovation and expedience in execution. Our local mission-focused business leaders who operate these tools, have been vital to the streamlined buildout of numerous secure compartmentalized information facilities (SCIF) and infrastructure crucial to ongoing global space operations.

Another example that highlights the squadron’s global nature of space operations is the work accomplished

by Master Sgt. Mikhail Andrade, 21st CONS, Detachment 1 superintendent, stationed at Copenhagen Denmark.

Andrade’s ability to rapidly procure floating fuel hose assemblies enables success of the sole fuel offload to Thule Air Base in Greenland during port season 2021. Andrade fine-tuned the requirement with the 821st Air Base Group, secured inter-departmental funding,

gained requisite clearances and competitively sourced the long lead items within budget, all while awarding in less than half the normal lead time for a contract action exceeding one million dollars. Without his initiative, the High North mission at Thule AB risked doubling the fuel offload time and incurring additional demurrage costs, as well as the potentially massive environmental and diplomatic impacts of a fuel spill caused by aging equipment.

The criticality of P-S GAR operations has only increased over the previous year as evidenced by activities of private actors and nearpeer adversaries alike in cyberspace and the domain of the ultimate high ground. In May 2021, a group of hackers successfully extorted one of the nation’s largest oil pipelines by crippling its operations via a cyberattack. In space, China’s rocket debris controversy, suspected Russian anti-satellite weapons tests and Iranian orbital aspirations in the past year alone represent just some

of the examples of outer space growing not only congested but contested.

21st and 50th CONS’ acquisition professionals are charged with quarterbacking business solutions to enable the wide-ranging set of no-fail missions from custodial to space based surveillance. Over 7 billion people across the globe rely on the uninterrupted success of these operations for banking transactions, efficient agriculture, weather forecasting and, from a military perspective, the effective placement of warheads on foreheads. These examples barely scratch the surface of the impact United States space superiority has for both our modern way of life and war, all of which is upheld through the success of P-S GAR and its mission partners.

Ultimately, these examples just scratch the surface of the unique opportunities for contracting professionals to exercise cutting edge, mission-focused business leadership with impacts that redefine "aiming high."

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — High Frontier Honor Guard fulfills a key role in the quality of life for active duty, retiree and veteran families by providing the final tribute for deceased service members on behalf of the president of the United States, and both U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force.

The High Frontier Honor Guard supports a vast area including 41 counties in Colorado and eight in western Kansas. The area of responsibility extends from the Utah border to Colby, Kansas and from the New Mexico border to Longmont, Colorado. This area contains two national cemeteries and an area of approximately 93,000 square miles.

The team is composed of service mem-

bers from three Colorado installations: Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Peterson Air Force Base and Schriever AFB. The Honor Guard is looking for highly motivated and sharp Airmen and Guardians to help support their mission. All incoming members are tasked to complete 80 hours of basic protocol during the Honors and Ceremonies Course. The course tests prospective guardsmen in military bearing and overall endurance. It also provides detailed instruction on performing a guardsman’s ceremonial duties.

USSF selects 2 JTF-SD Sailors to be Guardians Staff Report Joint Task Force-Space Defense Public Affairs

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Space Force working with the Army, Navy and Marine Corps have selected 50 active-duty volunteers from those Services to transfer into the Space Force beginning July 2021. This initial group of Soldiers, Sailors and Marines will test out the integration efforts established by the Services to pave the way for a larger group of volunteers transferring in fiscal year 2022.

Among the first 50 are two Joint Task Force-Space Defense Sailors: Petty Officer 1st Class Samantha Stafford, information systems technician originally from Weirton, West Virginia, and Petty Officer 1st Class Lindsey Conley, target analyst originally from Glastonbury, Connecticut.

“After coming to this command I fell in love with the space community,” said Stafford. “When I learned they were allowing inter-service transfers, I knew in my heart that I had to do it.”

Fellow ‘Space Trooper,’ JTF-SD leadership’s reference for their collective force, Conley was also unexpectedly inspired to seek transfer.

“I was not about space when I first got here,” said Conley. “I missed talking about submarines. But everything about space is unknown, every day here it’s history in the making.”

The Space Force has changed the horizon for at least one Sailor.

“I love the Navy. I accomplished all of the goals I set out to here,” said Stafford who has served for nine years. “The Space Force has widened the aperture and I’m looking forward to new goals and accomplishing them as a Guardian.”

These transfers are the latest in a series of collaborative efforts amongst the Space Force, Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps since the creation of the new service

in December 2019. More than 3,700 officers and enlisted members from the Army, Navy and Marine Corps submitted transfer applications during the month of March to compete for this transfer opportunity.

“We are overwhelmed by the number of applicants, and the outpouring of support our sister services have provided as we’ve partnered together to design the Space Force,” said Gen. David D. Thompson, Vice Chief of Space Operations. “We are excited to have Guardians from these Services join more than 5,200 Air Force transfers, and look forward to the new experience, perspective and culture they will bring as we continue to build the Space Force.”

In addition to the 50 just selected as the initial group to “beta test” the transfer process, approximately 350 more will be selected for transfer in July; each will be matched to positions in specific Space Force specialties– space operations, intelligence, cyber, engineering and acquisition. Members who previously applied do not need to take any action to be considered in this next selection board. Those additional selections will be announced in the coming months.

“The competition for selection has been tough. So many of the applicants are top performers with experiences and skillsets well-suited for the Space Force,” said Patricia Mulcahy, Space Force Chief Human Capital Officer. “With help from our sister services, we had the tough job of reviewing the applications to select the 50 candidates for this first transfer opportunity, and will use a similar process for the remainder.”

“I am so grateful to Master Sgt. Stephen Compton, Master Sgt. Brianna Fields, Chief Master Sgt. Jacob Simmons, Lt. Col. 5th SPCS Airman earns award for community outreach volunteering

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Andrew New, Space Delta 3 – Space Electronic Warfare, 5th Space Control Squadron mission assurance f light chief, received an Outstanding Enlisted Award from the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corporation’s Military Affairs Council in Colorado Springs, Colorado, May 14, 2021, as part of the chamber’s annual Armed Forces Awards.

New was one of seven local service members in consideration for the award in the mid-grade enlisted category, which encompasses the E-5 and E-6 pay grades — at the time of the award, he had the rank of technical sergeant.

“I didn’t do anything that everyone else hasn’t done," said New. “I just did what I wanted to do to give back to the community.”

Examining New’s record, though, marks him as humble as well as community-minded — he logged over 500 hours of volunteer work in his first eight years in the Air Force, earning himself a Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medal in 2018.

Since arriving at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, in November 2019, New has organized a variety of charitable efforts, despite the COVID-19 lockdown conditions over the past year. On two occasions, he arranged for around 20 volunteers to help a local food pantry organize and

process its donations and supplies, replace old shelving, and prepare grab bags for families. Looking forward, New hopes to work with Read Across America and link up with local schools to volunteer as a mentor, opening the door for other service members to give back as well.

“I think people want to be inherently good, and they’re always looking for ways to give back to the community,” said New. “Everybody wants to help, they just don’t always know how to.”

New comes from Portage, Pennsylvania, a town he described as small and economically disadvantaged; it had only two stop lights during his upbringing there, and he recalls the construction of the first McDonald’s in town as a major event. Volunteers and mentors who came into his school gave him role models and showed New and his classmates that they could strive for more than they had.

Later, New moved to St. Cloud, Florida, where he attended high school, and he enlisted in the Air Force after graduation. He pinned on master sergeant July 1, 2021, and intends to commission as an officer in either the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force.

“I couldn’t really do anything without the support of the local community,” New said. “I’ve been in [the Air Force for] almost 11 years now, and we really have to look [at] who’s coming in and what we’re going to hand them… make sure we’re taking care of the local community as they’re taking care of us.”

This inter-service transfer program is separate from a second effort to identify space missions and units from the other Services to realign to the Space Force in fiscal years ’22 and ‘23. Several hundred members currently assigned to those units will also be offered an opportunity to volunteer to transfer to the Space Force.

For one select, this transfer led to a touching family moment.

“My family is super excited, my dad cried tears of joy when I told him,” said Stafford, who said her cat is really happy too.

Air Force “What a Wonderful World” photo contest launches perience, or those who operate as professional photographers.

Youth categories, based on the age of the photographer at the time of submission: Children for ages 6-8, pre-teens for ages 9-12 and teens for ages 13-17.

Starting July 1, photographers can submit up to two original images in JPEG format at https:// forcesupport.awardsplatform.com. Images must be at least three megabytes and not exceed nine megabytes. As part of the Air Force’s Arts and Crafts Program, the contest is open to all authorized patrons of Air Force morale, welfare and recreation programs.

“The photo contest itself is a small part of our overall goal, which is to support and connect our Air Force photographers with each other,” said Johnson.

When the contest closes July 31, expert photographers will evaluate each entry based on impact, creativity and technical excellence.

Winners will be announced a few months later with the top three photographers in each category winning Amazon gift cards of $500 for first place, $400 for second and $200 for third.

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas — Photographers of all ages and experience, get your cameras ready for the annual Air Force Photo Contest.

The theme for this year’s contest, which runs July 1 — 31, is “What a Wonderful World.”

“We are excited for this year’s theme as we all have dealt with uncertainty and changing times this past year, and we find that many may see things through a different lens,” said Darlene Johnson, community and leisure programs manager at the Air Force Services Center.

“As our world begins to open up again, we invite our military communities to share the world they see,” Johnson said. “It’s as simple as a picture from their back yard, their pets, exploring old places haven’t been visited in a while or maybe a new place, the creativity in this year’s submissions should reflect new beginnings.”

The photo contest, highlighting and celebrating the art of photography created by Airmen, Guardians and their families, is open to ages 6 and older, in five categories: Adult Novice and Accomplished categories, for those 18 and older at the time of entry: Novice for new photographers and Accomplished for those with knowledge based on training or ex-

EXPIRED DoD ID EXTENSION

On June 25, DoD extended the exception to policy for certain expired Uniformed Services Identification (USID) cards to be accepted for access to DoD installations.

The extension applies only to the USIDs listed below that have a printed expiration date between Jan. 1, 2020, and July 31, and only until the date listed for each type: • Aug. 31, for foreign affiliates and their dependents; • Oct. 31, dependents of Active Duty personnel, and for Reserve and National Guard personnel and their dependents; • Jan. 31, 2022, for retirees and their dependents, and all other populations.

The staggered end dates listed above will allow for the gradual replacement of USID cards. Cards that expire after July 31, will not be accepted for physical access after their printed expiry date. This extension does not permit the acceptance of expired Common Access Cards. Any expired USID card accepted under this exception must be verified using an electronic physical access control system.
