Senior Airman Dylan Yarbrough

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Dylan Yarbrough is a pavements and construction equipment journeyman with the 50th Civil Engineer Squadron. With the 50th CES, Yarbrough maintains over $1 billion in property, ensuring suitable infrastructure and uninterrupted utilities in support of more than 190 Department of Defense satellites.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he spent most of his childhood in Cheyenne, Wyoming, as his father was stationed at F.E. Warren Air Force Base.

“My father, M.K. Yarbrough, retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant in security forces after 21 years of service,” said Yarbrough. “I had a good up-bringing with parents who I credit for me becoming the person I am today.”

As of February, Yarbrough has been in the USAF for four years; he’s been stationed at Schriever Space Force Base since October 2019. Prior to joining the Air Force, the Yarbrough worked various jobs.

“I had no real interest in the jobs I worked,” he said. “I never made more than minimum wage but had no desire to move up in the organizations. I didn’t have money for school to take me to a higher role or better career. I was lacking a sense of purpose and wanted to do something meaningful, something with value.”

The 50th CES provides fire and environmental protection; project planning and construction management; contingency planning and disaster response, and much more. The personnel assigned to the 50th CES continue the fine tradi-

tion of outstanding performance, garnering recognition and awards since the unit activated in 1992.

The members of the 50th CES get dirty and operate heavy machinery, earning the nickname, “Dirt Boyz.”

“In Colorado, a large part of my responsibilities are snow and ice control — operating snow removal equipment such as plows and push boxes, and the utilization of de-icing materials to ensure safe travel on base,” said Yarbrough. “Other duties involve planning, construction, maintenance, and repair of all travel networks, drainage systems, fences, signs and more.

We also support other civil engineers with our heavy equipment capabilities.”

Yarbrough’s work is important to keep the garrison’s mission alive by providing the maintenance, service and improvements needed to ensure safety and functionality of the facilities the mission requires.

“I get to play with Tonka Trucks in real life,” said Yarbrough. “Who wouldn’t enjoy that? I like that the results of my work leave behind something observable. Most of all, though, it’s the community. The civil engineer and Dirt Boyz community

is family. We’re all close and take care of each other. We get dirty together, and after a long day of hard work, we laugh and smile about it together. To me, that’s the most important thing.”

“Senior Airman Yarbrough directly contributes to the garrison’s mission as a heavy equipment operator assuring roads are safe,” said U.S. Air Force Tech.

Sgt. Levi Blair, 50th CES pavements & equipment non-commissioned officer in charge. “Yarbrough is responsible for ensuring preventative maintenance is complied with. Additionally, he directs a 12-person, $2.5 million equipment fleet in the removal of snow and ice from three million square feet of pavements, ensuring the safety of Team Schriever and 24/7 space operation superiority.”

As Yarbrough’s direct supervisor, Blair continued: “The Senior Airman has worked ahead of his rank for many years. His drive, attention to detail, and ability to lead is second to none. He’s consistently demonstrated his ability to work outside his comfort zone to lead peers and make the mission successful. There is never a doubt when something needs done, he will make it happen.”

When asked how serving in the USAF has impacted him as a person, Yarbrough said: “The Air Force has changed me for the better. For starters, it gave me a sense of pride and purpose, which I was missing before joining. Also, I lacked structure and discipline, and I now see how important those characteristics are — now that I’ve learned them. Communication skills, organizational skills, learning a trade, adopting the Air Force core values, and the list goes on.”

SF releases officer promotion selection board results Staff Report Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

ARLINGTON, Virginia — The Space Force selected 287 active-duty officers for promotion to colonel, lieutenant colonel, and major during the service’s first combined Line of the Space Force officer promotion board held in October 2021.

In total, the boards selected 30 lieutenant colonels for promotion to colonel, 48 majors for promotion to lieutenant colonel, and 209 captains for promotion to major. The Line of the Space Force competitive categories are space operations (LSF-S), information warfare (LSF-I), and force modernization (LSF-F). Promotion boards to lieutenant colonel were not held for the information warfare and force modernization categories as the eligible officers in the promotion zone met an Air Force promotion board in March 2021 prior to their transfer to the Space Force.

Listed are the selection rates for each rank by competitive category, and in the promotion zone or above the promotion zone.

National Nutrition Month

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — When the month of March rolls around, our minds begin to think about the beginning of spring, daylight saving time and the hope for warmer weather. Additionally, March represents National Nutrition Month. It is commonly known that we should try to make half our plate’s fruits and vegetables, but it is less commonly known why.

Fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fiber. For example, berries provide a great source of antioxidants and fiber where peas contain fiber, protein, thiamin, zinc and vitamin k. Beyond vitamins, minerals and fiber, fruits and vegetables are a great source of phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients are compounds produced by plants.

These include lycopene, indoles, carotenoids, anthocyanins and anthoxanthins. Phytonutrients are found in varying plant foods and provide benefits to our health. Watermelon is one of many sources of lycopene, broccoli is one of many sources of indoles and both may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancers. Pumpkins, are a source of carotenoids which help maintain healthy mucus membranes and eyes.

Blueberries are a great source of anthocyanins and

can help reduce the risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease. Bananas and potatoes contain anthoxanthins which may reduce the risk of stomach cancer and heart disease as well as aid in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. These are all just a few examples.

Incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables also feeds the good strains of bacteria in the gut, which positively influences our health. The gut microbiome is a community of bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeast that live in the gastrointestinal tract. Our gut microbiome can influence the immune system, produce neurotransmitters and affect digestion, absorption, sleep, appetite, mood and so much more.

As the gut microbiome is closely related to our health, it is critical to feed and nurture it. One of the best way to do so is through a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Low levels or an absence of the good bacteria strain of Akkermansia Muciniphila is associated with the metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, IBD fatty liver and hypertension. However, polyphenol rich foods such as pomegranate can be influential in raising Akkermansia Muciniphila levels.

At the root of it all, what is important is to incorporate a wide variety of fruits and vegetables into our daily diets. Fruits and vegetables benefit one’s health in a variety of different ways. Additionally, since they

are low in calories and high in fiber, they can assist with weight loss and weight maintenance.

There are four ways to reap the benefits of daily fruits and vegetables.

First, eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

This means eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables from each of the color groups, i.e., red, green, orange/yellow, white, blue/purple.

Second, choose whole fruits and vegetables avoiding processed, juiced or smothered options.

Third, do not shy away from frozen options.

Shopping in the frozen aisle can be great for eating on a budget or extending shelf life.

Finally, prepare your fruits and vegetables in ways that you enjoy. Have fun and experiment.

Do you like certain fruits or vegetables raw? How about roasted, steamed, microwaved, or masked in a main meal?

Bottom line, you should enjoy your fruits and vegetables.

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall visited Thule Air Base, Greenland, Feb. 11, 2022, to thank the Airmen and Guardians for their service and gain a first-hand understanding of the critical missions performed there.

Thule was the final stop after completing official engagements with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa.

The SecAF is responsible for organizing, training and equipping the U.S. Air and Space Forces, directing the Department of the Air Force’s annual budget, providing Air and Space Forces to combatant commanders for global operations and is accountable for the welfare of

nearly 700,000 active duty, guard, reserve, and civilian Airmen, Guardians and their families.

With Thule AB geographically aligned under USEUCOM and USAFE, it is imperative Airmen and Guardians stationed at Thule are aware of priorities in the European and African theatres.

Kendall’s engagements in Europe were largely focused on three key areas that aligned with the 821st Air Base Group’s mission and vision at Thule: training alongside joint and multinational partners, providing support in austere environments and creating Airmen who are versatile and capable of tasks beyond their initial training.

During the visit, Kendall had the opportunity to tour Space Delta 4 - Missile Warning, 12th Space Warning Squadron and Space Delta 6 - Cyberspace Operations, 23rd Space Operations Squadron, Detachment 1, to

meet with Airmen and Guardians and gain a first-hand understanding of the mission and challenges faced by both organizations.

The 12th SWS is responsible for executing missile warning, missile defense and innovative space domain awareness to deter aggression, secure space and if necessary, prevail in conflict. The 23rd SOPS, Det. 1 is tasked with performing telemetry, tracking and commanding operations for U.S. and allied satellite programs in support of national defense objectives.

Additionally, there was ample opportunity to highlight the invaluable efforts of the 821st Air Base Group to address challenges faced in the austere arctic environment with regard to maintaining, sustaining and improving physical infrastructure, communications capabilities, essential power production and generation.

VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif. — The Combined Space Operations Center (CSpOC) recently welcomed its first two inter-service transfer personnel, both of whom transitioned from the U.S. Army to the U.S. Space Force.

Technical Sgt. Justin Young and Sgt. Christopher Cameron joined the CSpOC’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance division in early 2022 and will begin their familiarization training in the coming weeks. They will be a part of a team of more than 17,000 Combined Force Space Component Command (CFSCC) personnel located across the nation who plan, task, direct, monitor, and assess the execution of combined and joint space operations for theater effects on behalf of the U.S. Space Command Commander, directly integrating with ongoing operations in other combatant commands.

“Both of these non-commissioned officers bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table,” said Maj. Gen. DeAnna Burt, CFSCC commander. “They’re not only going to help strengthen the CSpOC team and CFSCC’s support to U.S. Space Command and our allies and partners, but they’re also going to be at the forefront building up our U.S. Space Force culture.”

The U.S. Space Force was established on Dec. 20, 2019, and initially the only personnel to transfer into the new military branch were about 6,000 U.S. Air Force Airmen.

Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023 are when the first inter-service transfers from the Army and Navy are scheduled to take place, and both Young and Cameron were part of the first tranche of Army transfers.

Young’s previous assignment was with the 1st battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), in Okinawa, Japan, where he worked as the geospatial/imagery intelligence non-commissioned officer in charge.

him in his selection to join the Space Force.

“I was ready to join the Space Force as soon as I could,” said Young. “I came to the Space force to understand more about space operations and contribute whatever I can to its benefit and defense.”

Cameron was a signals intelligence analyst during most of his 10-year career in the Army, although he says that most of his previous duties did not exactly match with his specialty. In fact, his last assignment as a command and control operator for the Multi-source Intelligence Ground System at Fort Carson, Colo., was the first exposure he had with working in the space field.

“In the Army, we don’t really go to school to specialize in space operations,” Cameron remarked. “It’s more based on you getting lucky and getting it as a duty assignment.”

Young and Cameron see how critical space is to both national security and to the daily lives of people throughout much of the world, and feel like they can really contribute to the fledgling service.

“I remember learning about how different cultures around the world would use space as a tool to determine direction and time in my college anthropology class,” said Young.

“Now, I believe it’s even more fascinating that our actions in space enable us to look back down to the Earth and characterize the world we live in, whether it be deep learning AI using satellite imagery for crop health, tracking soil erosion, or looking at an image of nearly anything on demand.”

“Much of my 7-year career has been working with joint and multinational partners, and I’m very interested in applying it to space operations,” Young added. “It looks like the Space Force is focused on information sharing, and I am excited to be able to be a part of that.”

Cameron says he is curious to see how the Space Force plans unfold and he looks forward to being a part of that.

“By joining the Space Force early on, I think I’ll be able to shape the service while it’s still growing,” he said.

HOME CHECK LIST IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT SELLING

Even though it’s still a seller’s market, if you want to get the very top dollar for your home, think about the following:

ENTRY OR MUD ROOM: Install hooks for coats and a boot jack for shoes, a door mat inside the entrance will help keep the floor clean when showings start. Have your Realtor supply booties for them to wear and a sign asking them to either remove their shoes or put on the booties.

BOOKSHELVES AND DECORATIVE SHELVING: Only put items that belong there. Stack books or magazines in groups and add a potted plant, vase or decorative dish for a little color and aesthetic appeal. Always keep spaces open so the buyers can subconsciously imagine their personal possessions in your space.

WINDOW COVERINGS: Make sure to open blinds, shades or curtains so the home is filled with inviting light. It also provides a little free sunshine to help keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

PERSONAL PICTURES: Don’t have a whole wall of family pictures because it will distract the buyers and they will be looking at your family instead of the house. I do disagree with most professional stagers who will tell you to take down all family photos. Buyers want to see who lives there (it makes the process more personal). Just like having too many picture, not having any can distract from the home. If the buyers are hunting to see who lives there, they will be distracted and could miss some really nice features of the home.

BATHS: Check to make sure there is no mold or mildew. If there is, scrap it away, clean it, and/or re-caulk. Make sure bathroom mirrors are clean and not spotted and that the toilet seat lid is down (people’s eyes will automatically go to the hole), which is not the most appealing place in the home.

KITCHEN: Remove things from your countertops that are not absolutely necessary so that the kitchen seems more spacious, and again, the buyers can subconsciously place there own things in the spaces in between your things. Make sure dishes are washed and put away and counters are clean and neat. If you put things on top of your refrigerator, it will give the impression that there isn’t enough storage space in the kitchen.

WALLS AND DOORS: Make sure there are no dirty smudges or finger prints anywhere, even on window sills and around light switches.

CARPETS AND FLOORING: Make sure the flooring is clean and in good shape and there is nothing that the buyers could trip on (you don’t want them suing you for damages and getting your house for free).

CURB APPEAL: Make sure grass is trimmed as well as bushes and that the walk way is clear and easy to walk on. Re-paint any chipped or peeling paint. Stand across the street and pretend it isn’t your house and see how it would look to a stranger. This is the first thing the potential buyers see and it sets the mood for their visit.

dollar in the shortest period of time.
