The Joe English Hill overlooks two radomes with newly replaced tracking systems that provide access to space and allows for the command and control, and health and safety of over 200 satellites a day at New Boston Space Force Station, New Hampshire. NBSFS hosted a Wood-Energy Summit on National Bioenergy Day which was a collaborative forum led by U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. David Zesinger, NBSFS commander, and included four panel sessions that discussed the New Hampshire wood-energy industry; the forest as fuel; federal and state regulatory policy regarding wood energy; and wood-energy equipment.

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Army Gen. James Dickinson, U.S. Space Command commander, and Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Scott Stalker, USSPACECOM command senior enlisted leader, visited Airmen, Guardians and coalition members at Thule Air Base, Greenland, on Nov. 11-12, 2021.

U.S. Space Force Col. Heather L. McGee, 821st Air Base Group commander hosted the visit, which included a coalition session, senior leader luncheon, a town hall meeting and a tour of the strategic assets based in Greenland.

“The United States, as a member of the Arctic Council, is identified as an Arctic nation,” said Dickinson. “The alliance between the United States and Denmark is crucial in the Arctic, which has direct implications for both countries’ security interests.

Geographically, the Arctic comprises the northern approaches of the United States and represents a potential vector both for attacks on the homeland and for U.S. power projection.”

Thule radar is one of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning Sensors assigned to

USSPACECOM that performs missile warning for North American Air Defense and space tracking to provide satellite collision avoidance. Thule’s phased array radar, along with the radars in Alaska and northern United Kingdom, provides complementary early warning coverage over the Arctic region.

The senior leaders also visited various work centers at the 12th Space Warning Squadron and ob-served how service members operate in the Arctic. The 12th SWS supports three mission areas: strategic missile warning, missile defense and space domain awareness by tracking location, direc-tion and identification of objects in orbit.

“Space capabilities are integral to our way of life, national security and modern warfare,” said Stalker. “The more objects there are to track in space, the more difficult the job becomes. Our highly trained Airmen and Guardians are up to the task and provide that space domain awareness to assure there is never a day without space.”

Airman 1st Class Bikas KC

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — After living in the United States for eight years, Airman 1st Class Bikas KC enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2019 and serves as a career development technician with the 50th Force Support Squadron at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado.

KC was born and raised in Nepal, the country “Made of Hundreds of Flowers” northeast of India and south of Tibet. He moved to the States because his wife was pursing her master’s degree stateside. She now works as a historical architect at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

“I get to see my wife about once a month,” said KC. “She came here last for a couple weeks — and our next time together will be here again.”

KC is very family oriented. Although, he has not been back to Nepal since moving to the U.S., both his parents still reside in Nepal. KC now considers the U.S. his home “I love this country,” said KC. “There are a lot of things I value here that you cannot get in any other part of the world. People don’t see that, either because they simply aren’t aware or choose not to see it. I wanted to make a life in this country and thought, ‘Why not start by serving?’ Serving this country is one of the greatest things you can do.”

In February 2020, KC arrived at Schriever SFB and works in the Military Personnel Flight office.

“My job consists of creating, organizing and finalizing permanent change of station orders,” said KC. “I ensure that the administrative requirements of each PCS move are met to the highest quality. My daily tasks consist of verifying eligibility for an assignment based on retainability and requirements — this also includes reviewing official documents, assisting in approval routing, publishing special orders, and handling multiple appointments daily.”

Additionally, KC assists in other career development

areas such as retirements and separations of both Airmen and Guardians throughout the base, while also maintaining hundreds of records.

“Lastly, I took on an additional duty of assisting the squadron personnel systems manager with monitoring Military Personnel Data System reports and granting system accesses to eligible members,” said KC. This detailed work, laid out by KC, is how he supports the overall mission of the Peterson-Schriever Garrison.

His daily responsibilities enable Airmen and Guardians to perform their duties to the highest degree ensuring they can go to work each and every day knowing personnel and administrative actions are taken care of. KC’s efforts enable Airmen and Guardians to be mission ready at all times.

“A1C KC is our out-processing subject matter expert,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Danielle C. Cook, 50th Force Support Squadron, Military Personnel Flight commander.

“He is a go-to member for any question regarding career development. If he doesn’t know an answer, he takes time to research Air Force guidance and get a response back by the end of the day.”

As his commander, Cook praised KC for his heart and work ethic: “He is usually one of the first members in the office and one of the last to leave. He tends to hang around to make sure his team members are done with their workload for the day — or if there is anything he can do to assist them so they can leave on time. Outside of normal work functions, he is always the first person to volunteer for anything — last year, he was awarded Volunteer of the Year. He does all tasks with a smile and positive attitude.”

KC reflected upon his time in the Air Force and said it had been a positive journey.

“The Air Force has made me more empathetic, understanding, and helped me look at the world with a bigger view. I’ve become more open-minded and see a larger world.”

A1C KC’s PERSONAL MOTTO: You might not get hurt if you fall but you will certainly get hurt if you fall again and haven’t figured out why you fell the first time.

“It inspires me, as it makes me realize every step in life is a learning experience — and what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.”

Wood energy way ahead at New Boston SFS

NEW BOSTON SPACE FORCE STATION, N.H. — Moderators, panelists and spectators gathered for a Wood-Energy Summit at New Boston Space Force Station, New Hampshire, Oct. 20, 2021.

U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. David Zesinger, New Boston SFS commander, led four collaborative panels for virtual and in-person audiences.

Summit participants discussed using wood as an alternate, greener power source to cut costs to meet the U.S. Space Force and state of New Hampshire renewable energy targets.

The first panel conversation involved industry stakeholder’s viewpoints and how the market for wood energy products would affect the timber industry in New Hampshire and the wider New England region.

Panel two addressed climate change while using wood as fuel and how to manage and preserve the woodlands.

The panel gave a short review of the ongoing research regarding this topic.

The third and final panel considered state and federal environment regulations, the current state of wood

power equipment, and technology advancements for future use.

The state of New Hampshire regards wood as a renewable energy source and recent Environmental Protection Agency policy guidance states wood energy could potentially be regarded as carbon neutral.

Panelists shared their experiences and perspectives on wood energy during each panel and fielded questions from the local audience.

The local audience included personnel from U.S. Space Force, U.S. Air Force, and representatives from the New Hampshire Congressional Delegation.

New Boston SFS, located in Hillsborough County of south central New Hampshire, was established in 1942 as a practice area for bombers and fighter planes before it transitioned into a satellite-tracking station in 1959.

New Boston SFS transferred from the USAF to the USSF in the summer of 2020 and is currently operated by the 23rd Space Operations Squadron, a geographically separated unit of Space Delta 6 — Cyberspace Operations at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Soldiers from the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program visited the Schriever Space Force Base indoor track to teach sports at a Schriever 4-H STEM Club training camp at SSFB, Colorado, Nov. 12, 2021.

The Schriever 4-H STEM Club is for military-connected students ages 8 — 18.

The WCAP Soldiers taught students the fundamentals of target shooting, boxing, taekwondo and track. After the training portion of the event, students had an opportunity to get autographs and pictures taken with the athletes.

WCAP Soldiers are given an amazing opportunity to serve their country in uniform while training and competing throughout the year to represent the United States and the U.S. Army in the Olympic Games. They compete in a variety of sports such as baseball, boxing, cycling, modern pentathlon, rugby sevens, shooting, taekwondo, track and field, bobsledding and wrestling.

the first female active-duty service member to box for the U.S. when she competed in the women’s 75 kg boxing category during the 2020 Olympic Games.

According to the Army WCAP website, “Being a Soldier-athlete means everything to me,” said Graham.

She was also one of the soldiers to teach students during the 4-H training camp.

“I get to show what a leader looks like. I get to mentor on both sides and people look up to me on both sides. I feel I have knowledge to share on both sides that can help someone in the future,” said Graham.

Ruth Moore, SSFB School Liaison, coordinated and set up the WCAP training day for the 4-H STEM Club students.

“I wanted to provide the military-connected students an opportunity to meet the WCAP Soldiers because they provide positive role models, and motivate students to get active and live a healthy life style,” said Moore.

Aside from of the athletes’ numerous achievements and medals, these WCAP Soldiers can add the accomplishment of training and mentoring Schriever’s youth to their lists of successes.

392d CTS provides training during Coalition VIRTUAL FLAG 22-1 The DMOC at Kirtland AFB received exercise data from DMOC-S in real time. The transfer of data allowed the Kirtland team to forego issuing a notional event which further strengthened the command and control of joint and coalition forces during the virtual, large-force exercise.

In addition to missile-warning data, the 392d team also provided GPS data to the DMOC at Kirtland using their GPS Environment Generator for the first time in CVF. This allowed pilots using DMOC flight simulators to deploy precisions weapons in a simulated GPS-degraded environment.

“I’m really proud of our DMOC-S who built and tested the network connections with the 705th CTS, allowing us to bring a unique training opportunity directly to Space Delta 4,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Albert “AC” Harris, 392d CTS commander. “DMOC-S and the entire 392d team continues to innovate and deliver relevant advanced training, and I’m excited to see what other advanced training opportunities they build for the Space Mission Force.”

The 392d CTS previously aligned under Space Training and Readiness Delta (Provisional) Operating Location — A. STAR Delta (P) served as the precursor organization to Space Training and Readiness Command — one of three Field Commands under the U.S. Space Force. STAR Delta (P) OL-A was deactivated on Aug. 23, 2021, and activated as the 392d under STARCOM, Space Delta 1.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Personnel from the 392d Combat Training Squadron teamed up with the 705th CTS for Coalition VIRTUAL FLAG 22-1 using their Distributed Mission Operations Center — Space at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, Oct. 24 to Nov. 5, 2021.

CVF is an annual two-week exercise designed for joint and coalition forces to practice real-world tactics, techniques and procedures together in a computer-generated combat environment.

The theater-level exercise is structured to cultivate partnerships between four nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. Cohesive multi-domain operations were conducted remotely at 20 locations across eight different time zones.

The DMOC-S, modeled after the 705th CTS DMOC at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, postured a digital training environment for the 2d Space Warning Squadron and the 8th SWS of Space Delta 4 — Missile Warning.

“Participating in a large exercise involving units across the country, all done virtually, is pretty cool,” said U.S. Space Force 1st Lt. CH-47 Chinook lands at CMSFS

A CH-47 Chinook assigned to Fort Carson’s 4th Infantry Division did a site survey test landing at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, Nov. 5, 2021. — In the next year, approximately 960 personnel will transfer into the U.S. Space Force from other U.S. Armed Forces or government agencies. To ensure a smooth transition, the Guardian Orientation Course was created to foster a welcoming and intimate experience similar to U.S. Air Force major command courses and chief orientation courses.

“The Guardian Orientation Course is intended to orient all military and civilian inter-service transfers to the Space Force, making them feel welcomed and accelerating their contributions to their new service,” said Chief Master Sgt. James Seballes, Space Training and Readiness Command senior enlisted leader.

Each week-long course provides 50 students with 29 hours of instructor contact over a 40-hour period. Students will be presented with information about USSF structure, its relationship with the U.S. Air Force and combatant commands, the Space Capstone Publication, and the Guardian ideal.

“Our competitors are increasing their activities such as the recent Russian ASAT [anti-satellite weapons] test which was a significant event,” said U.S. Air Force Brig.

Students will also hear from senior leader mentors, participate in tours of Space Force facilities and receive briefings on a wide variety of topics including Space Force culture, promotion systems and history.

“This is the first time a branch will have been created with members from all armed services,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Ryan Durand, National Security Space Institute provost. “We have the unique opportunity to build and define what our culture will be.”

The first course was held Nov. 15-19, 2021, and is expected to be offered to all current and future transferees within a year of their transfer into the USSF. The course is offered 12 times per year at the STARCOM, Space Delta 13, National Security Space Institute, Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado. Up to three additional “mobile” courses may be offered in other locations each year, if necessary.

The Guardian Orientation Course is designed as an orientation only, and inter-service transfers will still need to receive mission specific training by their new units.

Other courses provided by STARCOM will offer training that contributes to specialty code qualification.

USSPACECOM conducts exercise Space Thunder Staff Report U.S. Space Command Public Affairs Office

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Space Command conducted the first exercise designated Space Thunder from Nov. 2-10, 2021.

Space Thunder 22 provided training opportunities for USSPACECOM to exercise its mission areas, with a specific focus on ensuring processes are in place to deliver continuous global space effects to the joint force. Approximately 30 USSPACECOM headquarters staff, in collaboration with its components and subordinate units, also sharpened com-mand relationships to ensure USSPACECOM can execute its supported role: to protect and defend the space domain.

“Space Thunder 22 tested U.S. Space Command’s ability, in unified action with mission partners, to conduct space superiority operations to deter aggression, defend capability and defeat simulated adversaries throughout the continu-um of conflict,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Damon Feltman, mobilization assistant to the director of Operations, Training and Force Development. “The diverse, joint

and total force approach USSPACECOM warfighters applied throughout the exercise demonstrated how fast the command is progressing towards achieving full operational capa-bility.

Space Thunder is integrated with U.S. Strategic Command’s exercise Global Thunder, which is designed around real-istic training activities against simulated adversaries with the goal of evaluating areas to further improve nuclear read-iness and strategic deterrent capabilities.

During fiscal year 2022, USSPACECOM will also conduct exercises with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and U.S. European Command to further develop advanced concepts for joint planning and employment, while building durable supported and supporting relationships for globally integrated operations.

In each exercise, USSPACECOM will refine its global responsibilities, which include satellite communications and sensor management, as well as the ability to plan, integrate, conduct and assess global space operations in order to de-liver combat relevant space capabilities to combatant commanders, coalition partners, the joint force and the nation.

With approval from the CDC and the FDA, the 21st Medical Group is offering Pfizer Biontech and Moderna COVID-19 booster shots to the high-risk population at the Women’s Health, Peterson SFB Main Clinic.

The high-risk population includes ages 65 years old, ages 18-64 with medical conditions, ages 18-64 with increased risk for infection due to occupation or institutional setting or residents of long-term care settings.

To receive the COVID-19 vaccine booster, beneficiaries must have completed their series at least six months prior. Completed series include two shots of Moderna, two shots of Pfizer Biontech, or the single shot of the J&J Janssen vaccine.

Pfizer Biontech will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting Nov. 15, and Moderna will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays.

THE POSITION In 2022, the Express will continue to expand both its print and digital coverage, and as such seeks someone to manage and empower our growing team of dedicated reporters, photographers, freelancers, columnists and designers.

With guidance from the Executive Editor, the Managing Editor will be responsible for assigning stories, editing stories, and overseeing the graphic presentation of the editorial content.

In collaboration with the design department, they will assist in the layout of the publication.

We seek a hard-working experienced journalist who desires a position where they can bring value to a community that is too often ignored.

We need an editor with passion for reporting and writing and who has demonstrated those skills.

We seek a candidate who has an eye for good design and a working knowledge of how newspapers operate. They need to be deadline driven while open to advice.

QUALIFICATIONS • At least 5 years of journalism experience, preferably in print.

• Past successful experience managing reporters, freelancers and designers is critical.

• Knowledge of Southeast Colorado Springs is strongly desired, but experience working for a news organization serving a majority minority community would also be acceptable • Experience with digital content, photography, podcasting and, or video projection would be a big plus

COMPENSATION • $42,000 to $50,000 range, with potential for both performance & longevity bonuses.

• Good health and dental benefits provided, 401k, along with a generous and flexible PTO. • Relocation allowance possible.
