JTF-SD awards space domain awareness contract via marketplace

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo.

— The Joint Task Force-Space Defense awarded ExoAnalytical Solutions with a contract to provide space domain awareness data via the Space Domain Awareness marketplace following their participation in a recent Sprint Advanced Concept Training series.

Threat-focused SDA is critical to the JTF-SD’s mission to, in unified action with mission partners, deter aggression, defend capabilities and defeat adversaries throughout the continuum of conflict.

JTF-SD conducts three SACTs annually to advance the readiness of current and future space capabilities and warfighting forces to meet the demands of a rapidly changing operational environment. During these SACTs, the JTF-SD has interacted with more than 50 commercial industry companies in the past two years and many are repeat participants.

“Through these SACTs we are able to see the resources that are available and how we can integrate them to meet our mission requirements,” said Lt. Col. Stephan Cummings, JTF-SD chief of current operations and space reconnaissance.

This is a new approach to learning what’s possible and is driving down costs at the same time.

The Joint Task Force-Space Defense recently awarded ExoAnalytical Solutions with a contract to provide additional SDA data via the Space Domain Awareness marketplace following their participation in a recent Sprint Advanced Concept Training series.

“We used to generate requirements and then put them out for bids, not knowing what those capabilities were or how we could integrate them into our operations,” said Cummings. “With ExoAnalytic Solutions, the capabilities proved valuable in a SACT and were subsequently available at a

much cheaper price via the Space Domain Awareness market-place.”

Space Systems Command operates the marketplace to give companies a venue to compete and allow users to take better advantage of non-traditional data sources.

Additionally, the marketplace is synchro-

nized with the Unified Data Library that ensures provided data is “delivered where it needs to be securely, reliably and normalized for easy consumption,” according to their website.

Bids are loaded anonymously into the marketplace as are the responses, preventing favoritism and potentially be-coming vendor locked while taking advantage of industry innovation at the speed of need.

“This [process] proves competition matters,” said Cummings.

Once on contract, those capabilities feed the JTF-SD Commercial Operations cell that improves commercial integration and mission effectiveness enabling operators to share indication and warning information, which includes commercial partners, through commercial sources that are inherently shareable.

“Through our JCO we are working with tens of commercial companies at any given time to compound our space domain awareness sight picture,” said Col. Scott Brodeur, National Space Defense Center director of operations. “We are excited about growing these partnerships to mitigate potential gaps and allow for increased sharing of indications and warning.”

Space Force detachment opens at Academy with high-altitude celebration

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Guardians at the Air Force Academy hiked to the top of Eagles Peak Nov. 5 to celebrate the activation of a Space Force detachment at the school.

The group displayed the Space Force flag at the summit to herald the opening of Space Force Delta 13, Detachment 1 — the first Space Force unit authorized at the school, also displaying the detachment’s flag at the peak.

The Academy is the top commissioning source for Space Force officers, and roughly 200 Space Force officers have graduated from the school since 2020.

“The expectation is that roughly 10% of every graduating class will commission into the Space Force,” said Dale Hogue, the Academy’s director for manpower, personnel and officer accessions.

Colonel Jeff Greenwood, Det. 1 commander, is a Space Force officer assigned to the Academy. The colonel has been building a team of Guardians to educate Academy cadets, support Space Force officers assigned to the Academy and “form the footprint for the new service so no matter where a cadet goes, they have the opportunity to interact with a Guardian.”

“We have the responsibility to motivate, inform, influence and inspire every cadet about space so they graduate with an understanding of the important role the Space Force plays in future conflict,” he said.

“Cadets must understand the reliance our nation places on space systems and how we fight in this domain.”

Hogue said the detachment’s staff will consist of junior enlisted to field grade Guardians.

“They’ll be air officers commanding [squadron commanders], academy military leaders and faculty members within the cadet wing, athletic department, Center for Character and Leadership Development, and prep school,” he said.

Lieutenant Col. Adam Wasinger, a Space Force officer on Greenwood’s staff, directs

training for the detachment.

“As Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond said, ‘Space is critical to American security and prosperity,’” Wasinger said.

“The establishment of the detachment at the Academy emphasizes how important Space Force capabilities are in today’s operations and tomorrow’s future. It’s exciting to be a member of the Space Force.”

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Trust in me my friend, for I am your comrade. I will protect you with my last breath when all others have left you and the loneliness of the night closes in, I will be at your side.

The “Guardians of the Night” poem completed the retirement ceremony of seven military working dogs and began the memorial ceremony of one MWD from the 21st Security Forces Squadron at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, Oct. 29, 2021.

The first mention of dogs being used in war is in 600 B.C. when Alyattes, the King of Lydia, battled the Cimmerians. In the U.S., many centuries later, dogs were first introduced to war zones as pets and mascots. Soon after that, the true potential of canines in war came to light, and dogs started to enlist next to their two-legged counterparts.

Dogs were not officially recognized until March 13, 1942, when the first K-9 corps was established.

On May 1, 1957, the responsibility to train sentry dogs was taken over by the U.S. Air Force from the U.S. Army. The first MWD school was established at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and to this day remains the sole Department of Defense MWD school.

The canine graduates are used for patrol, drug, and explosive detection, with specialized mission functions. The average cost for training a MWD ranges from $40K to over $150K and only about 50% of the dogs make it through the training program.

“Dog teams assigned here provide detection and deterrent capabilities for Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station [in Colorado],” said Staff Sgt. Hannah King, 21st SFS MWD handler. “Teams also provide law enforcement duties for the Peterson [SFB] community, dispatch to alarm responses and additionally to high threat incidents.”

MWDs provide defenders an enhanced capability to secure protection level resources, enforce military laws and regulations, suppress the use of illegal drugs, detect explosives, and protect installations and resources during peacetime, war and in support of operations other than war.

“Obviously it is hard to retire so many dogs at once,” King said. “But the MWD program pushes dogs out across the DoD as fast as they can. Once we submit a retirement package for a dog and it is approved, we can submit a request to get a new dog at the base.”

The retired MWDs: • MWD Brick was born April 4, 2012, and was accepted by the USAF in December 2013. He was certified for drug detection before starting his distinguished 7-year career. MWD Brick completed 1,283 hours and five minutes of narcotic detection time. He is the only narcotics dog responsible for covering three military installations. He currently lives with a MWD handler in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

• MWD Ppual was born Dec. 15, 2012, and accepted by the USAF in December 2013. He was certified for explosives detection in May 2014 before starting his 7-year career. MWD Ppaul completed 1,427 hours and 17 minutes of explosive detection time, four missions, and two deployments. He has a Mohawk hairdo and likes to play peekaboo with a towel after bath time. He currently lives with a former MWD handler in Fountain, Colorado.

honors one fallen MWD explosives detection before starting his 6-year career. MWD Rrudy completed 1,328 hours and eight minutes of explosive detection time, six missions, and one deployment. MWD Rrudy loves hot dogs, horses and cows. One MWD handler stated he has the softest fur in the DoD. He is currently waiting to move into his forever home.

• MWD Dano was born May 30, 2011, and accepted by the USAF in June 2012. He was certified for explosive detection before starting his 7-year career.

• MWD Sultan was born Jan. 5, 2012, and accepted by the USAF in December 2013. He was certified for explosive detection before starting his five and a half year career. MWD Sultan completed 1,251 hours and 42 minutes of explosive detection time, seven missions, and one deployment. He loves to paddle board, eat gelato, and ride his BIG JOE pool float. He splits time living in Vail, Colorado, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

• MWD Jack was born Dec. 13, 2012, and accepted by the USAF in December 2013. He was certified for explosive detection before starting his six and a half year career. MWD Jack completed 1,427 hours and 57 minutes of explosive detection time, four U.S. Secret Service missions, and one deployment.

He hates washing machines, and loves hikes and ping-pong balls. He currently lives with a MWD handler in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

• MWD Rexo was born May 10, 2012, and accepted by the USAF in Sept. 2013. He was certified for explosive detection before starting his 6-year career.

MWD Rexo completed 1,321 hours and 19 minutes of explosive detection time, three missions, and one deployment. He loved running around in the snow and letting his large tongue flop around in the wind. Unfortunately, MWD Rexo never got to go home as he passed away on May 4, 2020.

Many tears were shed as Defenders performed a flag-folding ceremony in honor of MWD Rexo, followed by Rexo’s final roll call performed by the narrator of the ceremony, Tech. Sgt. Konnor Torkelson, 21st SFS MWD handler.

Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soliders, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress amended by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of President Dwight D. Eisenhower this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

The observance of Veterans Day not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

SSC returns for Hack-A-Sat 2 Staff Report Space Systems Command Public Affairs

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Space Systems Command’s (SSC) Space Enterprise Corps Special Program Directorate’s (SSC/ECZ) satellite and ground system experts, along with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate team, is once again gearing up for the second Hack-A-Sat satellite challenge event during the final upcoming competition on Dec. 11, 2021.

Hack-A-Sat is a virtual competition sponsored by the AFRL and SSC. The event made its debut in 2020 during the largest cyber-hacking conference in the world, DEF CON Safemode.

SSC/ECZ is providing integral support and oversight for the event. Hack-A-Sat organizers are designing individual flatsats, which are non-orbiting satellite emulations built-out with sensors hardware and software, for the Hack-A-Sat finalists to compete on.

During the competition, teams who placed in the top eight from this past June’s qualification round will participate in an “attack/ defend” style competition whereby each team will have to attack the other team’s satellite systems while maintaining their own defenses to protect their own space asset systems.

The top teams have a chance to receive cash prizes and the ultimate chance to the bragging rights. There were ten teams who qualified in August, winning $10,000 each, and will compete at the final event in December for a $100,000 prize pool.

SSC and AFRL promoted the upcoming Hack-A-Sat competition at DEF CON’s Aerospace Village from Aug. 6-8, with demonstrations and interactive sessions, allowing cyber security experts to play or “game” on a flat-sat. Much of the SSC effort at DEF CON was on educating various researchers on the importance of the SSC acquisition lifecycle, teaching the cyber community how satellites are designed, and placing a high-level of emphasis on security.

SSC’s Enterprise Corps Special Programs director, Col. Brad Walker, said he is enthusiastic about the Hack-A-Sat concept and this year’s competition.

SSC/ECZ’s ultimate Hack-A-Sat goal is to provide a live on-orbit satellite for the hackers to breach in 2023. This satellite project, named “Moonlighter,” will represent the most current ideas and operational concepts available and offer intentionally-designed challenges based on real satellite operational data.

Capt. Aaron Bolen, the “Moonlighter” program manager, says, “Moonlighter will be a cyber-sandbox for hackers in space.

Think of this as the ultimate cyber challenge for hackers as well as an awesome opportunity for the SSC team to develop, design and launch a satellite.”

The Hack-A-Sat project is led by SSC’s Enterprise Corps Special Programs Directorate and Cross Mission Ground and Communications Defensive Cyber Operations in conjunction with AFRL’s Information Directorate.

The Hack-A Sat event is one of many SSC initiatives, which fosters and embraces new innovative approaches and readily challenges the status quo as part of a deliberate commitment to continuously evolve, improve, and advance in space. With Hack-A-Sat, SSC continues its goal to remain as an interconnected force effectively and efficiently sharing relevant information with a broad array of stakeholders in support of its mission, which encompasses both the people and the infrastructure needed to enable and foster unrestrained exchange of information and ideas, nurturing the development and adoption of new technologies in order to more effectively confront uncertainty in a volatile, competitive space environment.

MANAGING EDITOR Launched in 2019, The Southeast Express is a nonprofit monthly newspaper with a companion digital platform and weekly email newsletter, dedicated to informing, celebrating, educating, empowering and challenging the diverse 80,000 residents of Southeast Colorado Springs.

The Express is part of the 6035 Media, which includes the Colorado Springs Independent, the Pikes Peak Bulletin, the Colorado Springs Business Journal, the Transcript, and two newspapers serving Colorado Springs’ military bases.

Every month, every resident and business in the 80910 and 80916 Zip Codes receives a complimentary copy in the mail.

An additional 6,000 copies are available for free at selected locations throughout the community, still others are given to parents in Harrison District 2.

THE POSITION In 2022, the Express will continue to expand both its print and digital coverage, and as such seeks someone to manage and empower our growing team of dedicated reporters, photographers, freelancers, columnists and designers.

With guidance from the Executive Editor, the Managing Editor will be responsible for assigning stories, editing stories, and overseeing the graphic presentation of the editorial content.

In collaboration with the design department, they will assist in the layout of the publication.

We seek a hard-working experienced journalist who desires a position where they can bring value to a community that is too often ignored.

We need an editor with passion for reporting and writing and who has demonstrated those skills.

We seek a candidate who has an eye for good design and a working knowledge of how newspapers operate. They need to be deadline driven while open to advice.
