The importance of progression to the Space Force

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Motocross legend Carey Hart was the first person to ever attempt a backflip on a 250 cubic centimeter motorcycle during a freestyle competition at the summer Gravity Games in Providence, Rhode Island. His execution wasn’t perfect, and he didn’t completely land the trick, but he had forever changed the sport of Freestyle Motocross (FMX).

By definition, Hart’s attempt was innovation.

Carey Hart had cracked the code on the backflip, and set a new standard of expectations in the sport of FMX. Because of Hart’s success, tricks previously viewed as difficult before the backflip were not worth as many points with the judges during future competitions. As a result, his competitors were immediately driven to take action and get after learning the backflip and then improving the skill.

Soon after the 2000 summer Gravity Games, FMX would see competitors executing refined backflips, variations of backflips (‘No Footers,’ ‘Heel Clickers, ‘One Handed’), combinations of other tricks incorporating backflips, and years later even double and triple backflips.

There are even snowmobilers attempting and landing backflips now. The trick once thought of as the “holy grail” of FMX was evolving and expanding. FMX riders continue to add to and advance the now simple backflip that Hart accomplished 20 years before.

By definition, this is progression.

Progression builds off of innovation. Progression is a

core tenet to all action sports like snowboarding, skiing, surfing and skateboarding. In these sports, progression is a requirement for winning. Athletes are judged by their ability to show progression, and their success hinges on how much progression their tricks demonstrate. Examples of how important progression is to action sports are evident in how the athletes describe their tricks, how commenta-

tors evaluate runs and even in team mission statements.

For instance, the Canadian Snowboard Team’s mission statement is, “be at the forefront of progression with a positive and open mindset.” Essentially, when it comes down to it, these sporting communities understand that if you fail to progress, you lose.

Guardians should always be striving to progress. The U.S. Space Force started strong by adopting an innovation mindset as a core tenet. U.S. Space Force Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, issued planning guidance which list one of his priorities is to create a digital service to accelerate innovation. A focus on innovation and new ways of doing business to enable agility is essential, but it is not the only ingredient necessary for success. True innovation doesn’t come around often or easily, and it is typically not a quick process. We should always strive for innovation within our organizations and should also pursue progression in our current capabilities and operations.

Progression promotes enthusiasm for improving and building from established cultures, methods, capabilities, ideas and tactics. Progression is the idea that you never stop improving and building on what you already know how to do, and unlike innovation, it can occur every day with every member of the force. In sports, progression may come from optimizing form, nutrition or increasing the See PROGRESSION page 4

volume or speed of training to improve on an existing skill, such as, adding a twist or another flip to an already established trick. In the USSF, progression may mean mastering a new skill, tactic or procedure and improving on it by adding a new component to the tactic to make it more effective or streamlining a process to shorten a kill chain.

Progression is also something each organization can drive within their span of control. Units can discover new ways to execute their mission or to better utilize

Progression at the unit level sets new expectations for the standards to which we hold our Guardians, expanding the possible horizon for the next generation.

Leaders and supervisors also benefit from a progression mindset. When progression is personal, it is often called having a “growth mindset” or the idea that we can continue improving and growing through focused effort. New leaders in our force may focus on communication skills during one-on-one interactions, then progress to leading larger groups or leading a team in a more complex or ambiguous environment. Leadership, just like technical skills, must be practiced and improved upon. While sometimes new and innovative leadership practices or philosophies arise, personal progres-

sion of those skills is vital. Progression is both an individual and a group activity.

While each member needs to progress their capability, so does a flight, squadron or delta need to advance, improve and align their best practices to the current operating environment.

One area to be aware of is the inconsistent nature of progression. Guardians may experience periods where slow and steady improvements are interspersed with the necessity for rapid adaptions to changes in technology, policy or a new threat. Instead of frustration, someone with a progression mindset understands that there are always new problems to tackle along with challenges and setbacks being a part of the process. When progression stalls, that is when innovation is especially necessary. Likewise, while innovation seeks to explore the best new options or discoveries available, progression primarily helps us optimize a currently existing technology or strategic approach. The refinement of skills, given existing technology, also enables Guardians to remain adaptive when the next innovation occurs.

Embracing a progression mindset is critical to helping our USSF stay ahead of emerging threats and react to changes in the strategic environment. There are always new horizons to conquer in space.

To maintain our continuing strategic advantage in the domain, Guardians must continually progress, regardless of whether that be improvements in tactics, technical solutions, leadership skills or personnel best practices.

The defense of our nation is a race without a finish, an enduring competition for which the USSF must prepare.

Progression helps Guardians and their organizations focus on being the best in their craft, regardless of rank, specialty code or task, ultimately preparing the force to tackle whatever obstacle they encounter, helping to attain an enduring competitive advantage.

In action sports, it is understood that if you don’t progress, you are out of the competition before it starts. The action sports mentality of progression will serve the Space Force well moving forward.

Look to innovate and expect progression because if we don’t progress, we lose.

Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, visits Thule

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — At the invitation of the Mute Bourup Egede, Prime Minister of Greenland, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark paid an official visit to Greenland from Oct. 8 to 12, 2021.

The visit was originally scheduled for July 2021, but was postponed due to a series of COVID-19 outbreaks throughout Greenland.

During the trip, Her Majesty visited Illulissat, (the capital city of Nuuk), Pituffik (Thule Air Base), and Station Nord maintaining a theme of commemorating national history, while also paying tribute to the Danish and U.S. military partnership.

In Illulissat, Queen Margrethe attended the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 5th Thule expedition by Knud Rasmussen by visiting his birth place, while also touring the recently inaugurated Illulissat Icefjord Center, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

(UNESCO) World Heritage Site; which focuses on the Arctic environment.

In the capital city of Nuuk, Greenland, Her Majesty visited the national museum and unveiled a plaque at the memorial stone commemorating the royal visit by Christian X and Queen Alexandrine in 1921.

Queen Margrethe then paid a “private” visit to Thule Air Base where she engaged with United States, Danish and Greenlandic personnel during her first visit since 2015.

The final stop on her Greenland trip was a visit to Station Nord, the northernmost place in Greenland, with a permanent crew who is stationed there year-round supporting Armed Forces’ units across the country.

Thule Air Base was Mikaela Engell, High Commissioner of Greenland. In addition to affording approximately 20 United States, Danish and Greenland personnel the honor of attending two formal dining events with the queen, U.S. Space Force Col. Heather McGee, 821st Air Base Group commander, briefed the royal party on how Thule AB is now supporting the mission of the newly established United States Space Force. During this brief, she highlighted the fact that Thule AB provides significant strategic value for both NATO and U.S., remaining a collaborative space where the U.S., Denmark, Greenland and Canada cooperate on a range of issues including regional security, scientific research and support for our activities in space which includes early warning radar, facilitating communication with polar orbit satellites, and monitoring domestic and international space launches.

In addition to providing a mission-focused update to Her Majesty, McGee took great care in expressing our commitment to the mission at Thule and the continued alliance with Denmark as demonstrated through continued cooperation with the Danish Joint Arctic Command and the re-opening of the U.S. Consulate in Nuuk.

During the visit to Thule, Queen Margrethe received a personal tour of the Heritage Hall

Museum by Michael Boe Nielsen, resident historian, who articulated the importance of preserving the collective history and heritage of Thule AB, celebrating the diversity and accomplishments sustained over the last 70 years.

Furthering this message of continued partnership, McGee described the long-standing community outreach efforts by Team Thule to the villages in northern Greenland which include the 62-year Operation JULEMAND providing annual holiday gift donations to the local kids and schools; the more than 30 year-old cultural exchange called “Greenlandic Heritage Week” where local village families travel by dog-sled to Thule AB for events and cultural engagement; the internships and apprenticeship sponsored by the base maintenance contract; and the hosting of Greenlandic school kids, providing them much needed exposure to various job opportunities.

VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif. — The 30th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department provided assistance to contain the Alisal Fire which started Oct. 11, 2021, at Los Padres National Forest in Goleta, Calif.

The fire consumed approximately 17,000 acres of land, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of nearby residents and ranchers.

The 30th CES Fire Department upheld the front lines, fighting the fire from October 11- 19, while the Incident Management Team continued to maintain a strong presence until October 25, closely monitoring closely for any reminisce of the fire. Demobilizing on October 26, they returned to Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif.

Thanks to the extensive ongoing training of the 30th CES fire department, they were prepared to successfully combat the fire. When at Vandenberg SFB, the firefighters train on a wide variety of events that could occur, such as wildland fires, rocket & missile events, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents.

“We train to extensively to meet local, state and national wildland fire standards. At Vandenberg, we have developed a 2-week Fire Academy for our personnel and we also attend lots of state classes to certify our firefighters,” said Mark Farias, 30th CES fire chief. “Most of our folks have lots of experience. Our senior fire officers all have extensive experience in command positions and are part of the County and State Incident Command Teams.

We don’t allow anyone to combat a wildland fire until they are properly trained and certified. They train as if

their life depends on it because it does.”

The 30th CES Fire Department is a part of the national system called Interagency Resource Ordering Capability, which allows different departments across the country to see and assign resource’s availability and update their readiness status. Since Vandenberg SFB has aid agreements with local, state and federal agencies, when new incidents emerge the 30th CES Fire Department can plan and coordinate accordingly when called upon to help.

“The fact that our first responders so selflessly put themselves in harm’s way, day after day, month after month and year after year, is absolutely extraordinary,” said Farias.

FORT LEE, Va. — The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) recently announced the winners of the 2020 Best Commissary Awards in virtual ceremonies.

The agency held three separate virtual events — one for the East and Central areas, plus Headquarters; one for the Eu-ropean Area and one for the West and Pacific Areas — to celebrate the anniversary and announce the 2020 winners. Attendees included store directors, zone managers, area directors and agency senior leadership.

“2020 was a tough year for all of us, but our store employees once again stepped up to the plate and got the job done,” said Bill Moore, DeCA director and CEO. “We are so proud and thankful for the hard work, service and commitment you all have shown.

Now more than ever, you all have earned these awards.”

Nominations were judged on tangible and intangible qualities such as friendly environment, a well-run store, good work ethic and

Pledges made by Federal civilian, postal and military donors during the campaign season will support eligible non-profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world.

SAFETY 411 Playing sports has both physical and psychological benefits, but can end up in injury if an individual is not careful. Most sports injuries occur due to the lack of education and awareness about safety precautions and potential injury, inappropriate or lack of equipment or poorly conditioned players. Ways to prevent injury during sports are wearing the right safety gear and equipment, appropriate playing environments, enforcing safety rules, staying hydrated and stretching.

• Fires for which a permit has been obtained by the local fire protection district dating after the restriction date.

• The sale or use of fireworks.

It is a two-dose vaccine series and the second dose is required 21 days after the initial dose. Individuals who are ages 12-17 will need a legal guardian present during the vaccination appointment.
