PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The second-ever class from the Space Base Delta 1 Chaplain Corps’ White Rope Leadership Program, Flight 22 Bravo, was inducted during a ceremony at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, July 8, 2022.

White Ropes can be identified by the white aiguillettes worn around their right shoulder, which highlights them to anyone who may be in need of mental or spiritual support.

Based on a program first introduced at U.S. Air Force technical schools, the White Rope Leadership Program offers Airmen and Guardians, E-4 and below, the opportunity to serve as a chapel-based supportive resource for their peers around SBD 1.

“The White Rope Leadership Program is not only a force multiplier, but an instrumental extension for the chaplain corps mission,” said USAF Tech Sgt. Lathaniel Leigh, SBD 1 non-commissioned officer in charge of chapel operations, as part of her opening remarks. Leigh organized and presided over the ceremony alongside USAF Senior Airman Kaylah Williams, SBD 1 religious affairs journeyman.

“These leaders have acknowledged the need for connection and will foster building healthy relationships with the volunteer hours they will provide in the Eclipse Café,” said Leigh.

To meet that need, White Ropes take on a commitment of either six months or one year, which includes training in confidentiality, leadership development, character-building, sexual assault prevention and response, suicide prevention.

Space Base Delta 1 welcomes new commander

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Base Delta 1 held its change of command at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, July 11, 2022.

U.S. Space Force Col. Shay Warakomski relinquished command to the incoming commander, U.S. Space Force Col. David Hanson.

Prior to taking command of SBD 1, Hanson was the National Reconnaissance Office senior field representative to U.S. Space Command. He was responsible for representing the director of the NRO in senior-level issues and delivering full-spectrum solutions and capabilities to the combatant command. Hanson also previously served as the commander of the 821st Space Base Group, Thule Air Base, Greenland.

“I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to lead such a great organization,” said Hanson. “To the men and women of Space Base Delta 1, the entire nation depends on what each and every one of you do every day to ensure continuous space operations at all of our global sites. We are one team.”

After Lt. Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, commander of Space Operations Command, passed the colors to Hanson, he took a moment to reflect on Warakomski’s time as SBD 1 commander.

“Shay, I want to commend you for all you have done for SBD 1,” said Whiting. “Through the rebranding, renaming and reorganization, you and your team never lost sight of the mission and continued to improve the culture embracing your motto of: this is family business.”

— From the town of Bealeton in Virginia’s Fauquier County, U.S. Air Force Capt.

Alexander Schloe, Family Medicine physician and medical director, 21st Medical Squadron, Schriever Family Health Clinic, wanted to be a doctor from a very young age.

“My parents have pictures of me when I was a three-year-old in scrubs with a little stethoscope running around,” said Schloe.

Growing up, Schloe’s mother had ongoing health concerns and his desire to help care for her reinforced his aspirations to be a physician.

“I was always trying to care for my mom in the midst of difficulty, with providers working to figure out what was going on,” said Schloe. “I knew I wanted to be a physician in family medicine.”

His undergraduate degree is in cellular, molecular and physiological biology with a minor in chemistry. Throughout college, he worked as an emergency medical technician.

“I was an EMT in Isle of Wight, Virginia,” said Schloe. “I once delivered a baby in the cab of a pickup truck because the three of them weren’t going to make it to the hospital in time.”

While in college, he applied to the Health Professions Scholarship Program and got accepted. The HPSP offers prospective mili-

tary medical professionals a paid education in exchange for service as a commissioned medical officer. He continued onto Virginia Commonwealth School of Medicine, graduating in 2018. Schloe completed his residency with the U.S. Air Force Regional Hospital at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

“During residency, I had some really incredible patient encounters,” said Schloe.

“One of my favorites was a World War II fighter pilot. He flew in Normandy and retired as a three-star general. He was inpatient at Eglin and I learned so much from him. He was the humblest guy I’ve ever met.”

Schloe went to the veteran’s 100th birthday, where the retired general showed him World War II relics and photographs of history he had experienced.

“He’s since passed, unfortunately,” said Schloe. “Early on, he told me he made cookies for the kids in his neighborhood every Saturday for 20-plus years. He was upset the first Saturday he was at Eglin because he couldn’t.”

Knowing that, Schloe brought the veteran some of his wife’s homemade chocolate chip cookies, sneaking a bag to him one morning during rounds.

“He had the biggest smile,” said Schloe. “I came back 30 minutes later, and he was in his recliner with crumbs everywhere. It was See MEDICAL page 8 sfspaceorbital.com

9-8-8: A new lifeline for mental health care

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — In 2020, Congress designated a new 988 dialing code to operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s network, paring down a 10-digit number (800-273-8255) to simply three, similar to the emergency dialing code, 911.

The U.S. will make the transition, implementing 988, on July 16, 2022.

“Two years ago, it was congressionally decided that we needed something to standardize mental health services the way we standardize emergency response services, a simple, universal way for every person to contact really amazing resources networked across the country,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jessica Ditson, Space Base Delta 1 violence prevention integrator.

Despite this being a congressional decision on a nation-wide scale, the three-digit mental health dial will connect callers with assistance on a local level. 988 is an entry point to reach a trained crisis counselor no matter where you live.

“When you call 988, you’re going to be connected to people in your own community, people who can help you,” said Ditson.

The 988 dialing code is a step forward in transforming mental health care in the country. Moving from an 800-number to an easy-to-remember dial removes a major obstacle between someone in distress and the care they need.

“That’s the big part: it’s something more readily available,” said Ditson. “I don’t remember life before 911. 911 was always the thing I was taught as a child for when you need help.

It was internalized and normalized, like ‘stop, drop and roll.’ I’m hoping that this starts to normalize for a whole other generation.”

Ultimately, 988 is a connection to compassionate care and accessible support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress, whether it’s thoughts of suicide, substance abuse or any other kind of mental or emotional distress. Additionally, people can dial 988 if they are worried about a friend, family member or loved one who may need support.

“You don’t necessarily need to be actively suicidal,” said Ditson. “You can be depressed; you can be experiencing panic or anxiety or any number of life experiences where you want the support of someone outside of the situation who can give feedback, guidance or connect you with a local resource in your area. We have some amazing resources here in Colorado.”

Currently, Schloe is stationed at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, working for the Schriever Family Health Clinic. He sees an average of 18 patients a day, performing physical exams, interpreting lab work and radiology studies, and coordinating diagnostic treatment plans. In addition, he oversees a team of five providers, three nurses and six technicians.

“I appreciate the medical knowledge and support Captain Schloe provides our clinic — his positive attitude, innovative way of thinking, compassion for people and being a spirited team player,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. SSC’s next Industry Day to focus on Space Domain Awareness

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Space Systems Command (SSC) officials and other agencies involved in Space Domain Awareness (SDA) will meet with traditional and non-traditional space industry professionals July 28 in Colorado Springs to exchange ideas and methods to execute SDA missions at the next SSC Industry Day. “Strengthening partnerships with industry and having valuable dialogue is critical as the space acquisition community seeks the most innovative and creative solutions in order to get after the threat and challenges facing the nation today in space,” said Col. Rich Kniseley, Chief of the Enterprise R e q u i r e m e nt s and Architectures Division, at SSC’s Space Systems Integration Office.

“By listening to our industry partners and understanding their approaches and technologica l abilities, it provides us better insight on how to focus our investments and we can take advantage of the best the commercial space industry has to offer,” Kniseley said.

The unclassified event later this month will follow SSC’s traditional Industry Day approach with a full agenda of government presentations from around the SDA community, including but not limited to SSC Acquisition Deltas, U.S. Space Command, SSC’s Front Door and Commercial Services Offices, the JTFSD Commercial Operations Cell, the USSF 19 Space Defense Squadron, Air Force Research Laboratory, and many others.

While the July event follows the traditional Industry Day format, SSC’s Industry Day series also includes “reverse industry” style events, where SSC officials and subject matter experts meet with commercial companies to talk about different problem sets facing the U.S. Space Force. Industry input helps to shape how the USSF pursues those problem sets, and helps identify what needs to be purchased, said Lt. Col. Vinny sfspaceorbital.com

In addition to active participation from the U.S. Department of Defense and the intelligence community, Pande said there has been growing interest in the Reverse Industry Days from non-traditional companies, who might not have the robust business development teams and networks of former government officials that larger, defense “prime” contractors have.

A Reverse Industry Day, held in May in partnership with the Aerospace Industries Association, focused on tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). Industry Days scheduled for Aug. 24-25 will focus on Tactically Responsive Space on the Aerospace Corporation campus in El Segundo, said Capt. Nathan P. Weiss, SSC’s Space Safari program manager.

“In some areas, the commercial space industry has innovated faster than the government, and often there’s a commercial solution for the Space Force’s needs,” Weiss said. “There’s certainly some efficiency to be gained using the buy-before-build approach and often, we can get what we need by bringing on a commercial provider rather than a traditional Government procurement.”

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Strength through partnerships was a key theme delivered by Space Systems Command (SSC) during speaking engagements directed at military service branches, government officials, industry and academia throughout May and June.

“With the increasing threat, it’s very important to recognize that no organization, agency or allied partner is going to be able to build (a resilient Space Force) alone,” said Lt. Gen. Michael A. Guetlein, SSC Commander, addressing What’s Next for SSC at the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) in May. Speaking to both a live and virtual audience, Guetlein explained that SSC was stood up to enable a single unity of effort across government agencies as well as facilitate greater collaboration with academia, commercial industry and even foreign allies.

“There’s been a tremendous amount of change in both the space environment as well as the acquisition environment over the past year,” said Guetlein. “(Public) dialogue … helps us get the word out about the things that are changing…how we are getting after the threat, and how we are embracing commercial industry as well as allied partners in the protect and defend mission area of space.” (View the entire CSIS conversation with Lt. At the third annual Military Space USA Conference in early June, Dr. Stephen Pluntze, SSC Executive Director of International Affairs (IA) Office, echoed the call for engagement with allied nations, academia and commercial industry to maintain and advance U.S. capability and security in space.

“The first thing to remember is, it’s OK and it’s understandable for the other nations of the world to catch up to the United States,” noted Pluntze in a recent MilSat magazine article. “As they make progress and we can make them our partners, we then become a much more powerful unit.” (Read more from the MilSat article here.)

mercial space industry, Maj. Adam Burnetta, SSC’s Space Enterprise Consortium (SpEC) Program Manager, participated in the Association for Corporate Growth’s annual Aerospace & Defense Summit. Burnetta provided an overview of SSC’s organization and shared solutions for companies navigating the space acquisition labyrinth hoping to pitch “the next big thing” in front of the right people.

“We want to be that front door for industry to ask any questions, to not get lost in the email riff raff of shifting offices or people, which the military often does,” said Burnetta in his keynote address at Space Tech Expo, a leading showcase for the commercial space industry. At the Government Contract Pricing Summit, SSC Executive Director Joy White made the point that tax payer defense dollars can go further “when we buy off the shelf, repurpose, adapt or modify what’s already commercially available.” With $5.4B of satcomm contracts already in place, White said SSC is now looking at opportunities to buy space domain awareness data, weather capability services, and even GPS or PNT services. Cybersecurity is another area in which SSC is seeking to bolster its pool of solutions by engaging with commercial industry. Delivering the keynote address at the CyberLEO conference in Los Angeles, Col. Jennifer Krolikowski, SSC Chief Information Officer, addressed the threats to low earth orbit satellites and the need for resilient technologies to protect and actively defend against the increasing threat of cyberwarfare and its impacts on everything election outcomes to power grid interruptions.
