SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The L&L Coffee Shop at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, has changed owners, as Linda and Larry Lorenz retired and gave the business to their nephew, Riley Tindle, on May 31, 2022. Tindle now runs the shop along with his fiancée, Jessica, and his mother, Lona. While there have been some hurdles as they’ve taken over L&L, Tindle said there has been little difficulty getting buy-in from his aunt and uncle’s regulars.

“I actually wasn’t able to get on base until two days after I’d taken over the business officially, so we were closed for a few days,” Tindle said. “We came back, and [customers] said ‘thank God, you’re open again!’”

The Lorenzes gave Tindle and company their recipe book, so most of the menu will be familiar, though Tindle has already made a change by adding salads to the daily menu for warmer weather. Lona is the shop’s coffee whisperer, and she brings three years of barista experience, as well as familiarity with the space — she worked in the café before it became L&L, when it was run by a woman named Trina. Lona uses Trina’s recipes for rotating specialty drinks, all using a locally roasted coffee blend called Trina’s Brewed Awakening.

Tindle, too, has prior experience in food service and military contracting. He worked at a Taco Bell in Colorado Springs in his teens before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served for six years. After separating, he spent around a year working at Panera Bread and around 10 years at aerospace and defense contractor Northrop Grumman.

“I’ve tried to reintegrate into the civilian world a couple of times, and it’s never really gone too well,” he said. “Having an opportunity like this to serve the military and contractors was a natural marriage for me.”

Tindle credits his time in service with equipping him to succeed as the head of L&L; the unique constraints in L&L’s physical location demand creativity, flexibility and hard work that other locations do not. Major food distributors’ routes don’t service L&L, so Tindle loads his car up with supplies and brings them in every morning. The L&L team also cannot use industrial kitchen appliances due to electrical limitations. With only one water line for the sinks and no ability to modify the back-of-house area, Tindle can’t install an ice machine, eliminating iced or blended drinks from the menu. They can’t cook on site and do not currently work with a commissary kitchen, so every menu item has to be pre-cooked, limiting what they can offer.

Tindle finds ways to add extra flavor, drawing from his experience serving at Camp Swift, Iraq. There, like at L&L, food came pre-cooked and ready to eat. He recalls that a woman he knew as Mama Tav ran a café there, wherein she would prepare pre-cooked supplies with seasonings and technique to make meals better.

“Our breakfast sausage, because it’s already cooked, you could essentially chop it up and put it in the burrito, and it’d be fine,” Tindle said. “I have a grill in the

back, and I will sear the sausages there. That sear just adds that extra texture and flavor level.”

Going forward, Tindle would like to add more cold drinks, like iced coffee drinks or lemonade. He is actively working on finding a local wholesale bakery so he can bring in locally baked breads.

L&L Coffee Shop is located in the lobby of Building 24 on Schriever SFB, and it is open from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Friday.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — “Take care and recognize each other, be professional, do the right thing, follow values and know that you make a difference.”

These are the legacy and inspirational words that Barry Cardwell leaves as he retires from over 52 years of federal service to the Department of Defense.

Cardwell, the deputy chief, Strategy, Policy and Doctrine Division, Strategy, Policy and Plans Directorate, North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command retired on May 31 at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, after serving briefly as a contractor then as a Department of Defense civilian for 21 years. This is after he retired as a Colonel, United States Army in 2001 after 31 years of service.

Cardwell is a living legacy of USNORTHCOM, being chosen as one of six prior service personnel to originally design and build the concept of USNORTHCOM in the early 2000s.

“In January 2002, the President directed the Secretary of Defense to develop a new command with the main focus being defense of the homeland,” said Cardwell. “I got a phone call and was asked if I wanted to be a part of this new ‘thing’, and from there it was history.”

After considering multiple ideas for a location, the team put forth the concept of USNORTHCOM being partnered and collocated with NORAD at Peterson. It was clear to them that there should be a connection with an organization responsible for the air domain. After collaboration with, and concurrence from Department of Defense leadership, ultimately the determination to collocate the commands was approved. USNORTHCOM reached initial operational capability on Oct. 1, 2002 and established full operational capability on Sept. 11, 2003.

“We met full operational capability on September 11 to coincide with the attacks in 2001 that ultimately established USNORTHCOM,” said Cardwell. “9/11 showed us that oceans and distance no longer kept us safe, so USNORTHCOM was developed to fit that need.”

Cardwell honorably served his country for 52 years, but he did not make the journey alone. In 1969, he met a young woman named Tamara while working a summer job during ROTC at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, a pizzeria and bar, in El Paso, Texas while singing his best version of country-western music.

“We had live music when I was bartending. When the band would take a break, a friend and I would get up on the mic and sing. I’m not sure how good we were, but the crowd enjoyed it,” said Cardwell. “One day, this beautiful blonde woman came in and sat as we sang. We were still singing when she got up to leave, so I hollered at the bus

boy to get her phone number and called her that day.”

Cardwell’s leap of faith paid off as he and Tamara married the next year, and for the next 52 years, she would travel with Cardwell around the globe. “Let there be no doubt … with countless deployments, many with little to no notice, away from Tamara and our two children, their service and sacrifices are never forgotten,” said Cardwell.

TEMPE, Ariz. — The U.S. Space Force and Arizona State University signed an agreement here Tuesday making ASU the newest member of the service’s University Partnership Program.

USSF Chief Technology and Innovation Officer Dr. Lisa Costa joined ASU President Michael M. Crow on the Tempe campus to finalize the agreement and to learn more about ASU space initiatives and capabilities.

Home to the School of Earth and Space Exploration and named U.S. News & World Report’s most innovative university in the nation for seven consecutive years, ASU will now assemble partnerships and models to collaborate with the Space Force on research and education.

“Our partnership today with ASU will pave a path to higher education and workforce development” Dr. Costa said. “With a stellar reputation in space engineering, defense research, and innovation, ASU is the perfect addition to the program and will be instrumental in helping us take the Space Force mission into the future.”

ASU is one of the fastest growing research universities in the nation, topping $677 million in research expenditures in 2021. ASU is ranked 6th in the U.S. for research expenditures among universities without a medical school. The university also ranked 1st in the U.S. in transdisciplinary research, and ranked 3rd nationally for NASA-funded research expenditures.

“We are certainly no stranger to space,” Crow said. “ASU is a leader in exploring the universe, from planets to asteroids and from the Milky Way to the most distant galaxies. We are excited to work with Space Force to continue on this path toward discovery and insight.”

- The Psyche mission will seek answers to how planets are formed by analyzing the metal-rich Psyche asteroid orbiting the sun between Jupiter and Mars.

-Europa Clipper includes the Europa Thermal Emission Imaging System built

by ASU scientists and engineers to investigate Jupiter’s moon Europa.

-ShadowCam is a telescope instrument built by ASU experts to explore and map the moon’s permanently shadowed regions in search of evidence of frost or ice deposits.

“We embrace this new U.S. Space Force partnership and look forward to future collaboration at all possible levels,” Crow said. “Whether we help develop the Space Force workforce through formal education or assist with initiatives to bolster national defense objectives, we are all in.”

ASU’s experience with defense research will be instrumental in creating future programs with the USSF. The university maintains multiple programs, centers and initiatives with the Department of Defense that address current and emerging security challenges —such as cybersecurity, disinformation, artificial intelligence, and homeland security operations.

The UPP’s four goals are to establish opportunities for world-class research, advanced academic degrees, and workforce and leadership development for USSF Guardians; identify and pursue areas of mutual interest with member universities, individually and collectively; establish scholarship, internship and mentorship opportunities for university students and ROTC cadets; and recruit and develop diverse officer, enlisted, and civilian Guardians with a particular focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

RAD enhances efficiency for space launch missions

PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. — A new software program called “Range Application Deployment,” is enhancing situational awareness for space launch missions at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

The system, which is accessible from any networked location in the United States, provides launch control officers with several communication channels, the launch countdown clock and up to 25 video feeds.

Senior leaders at then Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station began developing a virtual computing environment in 2018 to allow the Capabilities Development Division to work innovation projects geared towards modernizing legacy range systems, said Sonia Holmquist, Space Launch Delta 45 Capabilities Development Division chief.

“We established a lab environment with the information technology architecture and internet protocol network to enable this work and integrated various products through small, quick projects that would provide a virtualized operator workspace, enabling operators to access all the tools and mission information needed from one console, increasing flexibility to access tools from various locations,” Holmquist said.

In November 2020, the Capabilities Development Division researched what it would take to transition the lab environment into an operational capacity, Holmquist said. The soft ware received operational acceptance approval May 9 and was used to support Boeing’s Orbital Flight Test-2 mission to the International Space Station May 19.

Peterson teen wins Youth of the Year 2022

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Zakary Stewart, son of U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Stephen Stewart, U.S. Space Command Geospatial Intelligence Division superintendent at Schriever Space Force Base, won the Boys and Girls Club of America Military Youth of the Year Award 2022.

Since 1947, Military Youth of the Year has been the BCGA’s highest award and celebrates the achievements of club members. Winners are recognized for their leadership, community service and academic excellence.

Stewart has been part of the BCGA for eight years. He has completed 80 hours community service this year and won the Billy Mitchell award at the Colorado Military Academy, earning the rank of 2nd Lt. “It’s an honor to win [Youth of the Year],” said Stewart. “I care a lot about the people here at the program.”

Stewart will be participating in regional competitions against other club members, who have also won at the local club level, across the state of Colorado in Dallas, Texas on June 10. Stewart enjoys the leadership opportunities the BCGA has afforded him, and aspires to attend the Air Force Academy to study aerospace engineering.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness (PTSD) Month. Space Systems Command has a Community Support Program, managed by Bryan Blue, at Los Angeles Air Force Base.

“PTSD is not inevitable following a traumatic experience or experiences,” Blue said. “Studies have shown many actually experience post traumatic strength, when they survive a tough or unpleasant event.”

Several factors play a role in developing PTSD, such as individual personality, the severity of the event, proximity to the event, the people involved, duration of the trauma and the amount of support the person receives afterward.

“Many feel a sense of victory, knowing they survived and they become more resilient as a result,” Blue said. “If on the other hand, one has difficulties processing stress, getting professional help early, is key to building that resilience.”

AF Academy celebrates service of grads who became chaplains

By Office of Public Affairs Air Force Materiel Command

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — A plaque unveiled in Fairchild Hall late last month lists the names of the 22 U.S. Air Force Academy graduates who went on to serve as chaplains in the Air Force.

The plaque was uncovered in a ceremony hosted by Chaplain (Col.) Julian Gaither, the Academy’s command chaplain, and featuring comments from Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Randall Kitchens, Department of the Air Force’s Chief of Chaplains, May 22.

“Th is memorial plaque will serve as a reminder to all of our cadets, present, past and future, that there is a possibility to serve your faith and country in our chaplain corps,” Gaither said.

Kitchens said the event commemorates Academy graduates who became chaplains to serve the needs of Air Force and Space Force families.

lot,” he said. “Now you come to the United States Air Force Academy to become a leader.”

The event also honored Chaplain (retired Col.) Robert Browning, the first Academy graduate from the first graduating class of 1959 to become an Air Force chaplain, who retired from the Air Force after starting his Air Force career as a B-52 navigator. Browning served in the chaplain corps at several U.S. and overseas locations before retiring at the rank of colonel.

“The real question is who will be the next name on the plaque,” Kitchens said. “What awesome things will they do? Who will be that next name to care for Airmen, Guardians and families?”

The plaque, currently exhibited in the Academy Chaplain’s legacy hallway, will be displayed in the Cadet Chapel once workers complete the Cadet Chapel renovations.

As chief of chaplains, Maj. Gen. Kitchens is the senior pastor for more than 770,000 active duty, Air National Guard, Reserve and civilian forces in the U.S. and overseas.
