Delta 3, folded in tradition

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Delta 3 – Space Electromagnetic Warfare’s tradition of folding flags, to be taken on their team’s deployments dates, back over 20 years to one of DEL 3’s predecessor, the 76th Space Control Squadron.

During this ceremony, the audience observes members of the High Frontier honor guard folding an American flag 13 times before presenting it to the Delta 3 commander. The commander then presents this folded flag to the deployment commander, standing with their team to be flown during their deployment.

“DEL 3 performs this ceremony to symbolize the

charge on our troops to carry out the missions they were trained for, while holding our Nation’s symbol close to us,” said U.S. Space Force Maj. Gerardo Lopez, Space Delta 3 - Space Electromagnetic Warfare, Commander’s Action group chief.

Ceremonies like this are a way to gather family and friends with their units to celebrate and honor their team before they are sent downrange to defend our nation. Bringing everyone together further fosters the community our units have, giving leadership and key spouses another chance to check in with deployers and their families to make sure they have and continue to receive all the support they need during the upcoming deployment.

“By conducting a flag folding ceremony, our Guardians

take the time to honor our nation’s most iconic symbol,” said U.S. Space Force Capt Victoria Garcia, DEL 3, Mission Planning cell chief. “This [ceremony] personally signifies a passing responsibility, authority, and accountability, coupled with expectations of performance, which marks the uniqueness of command.”

The flags are taken with the deployment team and it is flown over their location, taken with them outside the wire, carried on convoys and hung in their operations floor. Once the deployed team returns, the flag is retired, encased in a shadow box and displayed in their heritage hallway with all of the other deployment flags.

“The flag is a symbol of liberty and has carried the inspirational message of freedom to Americans, at home and abroad,” said Lopez.

Servicing support for Airmen assigned to Space Force fully operational

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — The Air Force Materiel Command reached Full Operational Capability for its Servicing Major Command support to Space Force-assigned Airmen, June 1, 2022.

As the Servicing MAJCOM, AFMC is accomplishing the roles and responsibilities traditionally performed by a major command for the Airmen supporting the Space Force. These major command functions include, but are not limited to, providing policy guidance; professional development opportunities/guidance; developmental team representation; and functional-specific roles.

AFMC declared Initial Operational Capability on Oct. 1, 2021, and has since been completing final actions and processes identified in a programming plan that outlined the AFMC functional support for Airmen assigned to the United States Space Force.

AFMC reached FOC four months ahead of schedule when all assigned functional areas became fully supported by AFMC, and the organization hired all of the positions required to provide servicing major command support to Space Force Airmen.

Airmen at USSF installations continue to be serviced by their local Military Personnel Flight and Civilian Personnel Office, and the Air Force Personnel Center continues to provide service to all Airmen at Space Force installations.

Approximately 8,000 Airmen assigned to Space Force installations and units are being serviced by AFMC. The Department of the Air Force created this unique and first-time Servicing MAJCOM

structure in October 2020 to ensure Airmen assigned to the Space Force receive the same force development opportunities, functional and administrative support as those at U.S. Air Force installations.

National Reconnaissance Office Chief beats cancer

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — It was a typical autumn day in 2020 when Chief Master Sgt. Tina Timmerman, National Reconnaissance Office senior enlisted leader, noticed a small lump in her breast while doing a self-exam.

Being the hard worker and leader she is, Timmerman put the mission first and delayed getting examined until she felt her office was in a good place.

“I had a couple of mission-critical [business trips] going on; it was the holidays and it was still COVID so I was slow to react because of everything going on,” Timmerman said. “I felt, as a leader, that was what was expected of me. This was a self-imposed process. I had to put myself on hold [to] take care of our people and our mission — [taking care of] myself was last.”

It wasn’t until nearly five months later, in February, that Timmerman spoke with her doctor and requested a mammogram. From there, her providers scheduled a follow-up ultra-sound and biopsy. Timmerman said they wanted to complete all of her exams before she moved from Colorado to Virginia.

“I was trying to cram everything in for my current unit, my family, myself and be prepared for the next opportunity coming my way,” she said. “I was a little stressed, but at the time I was just trying to check every box, make sure I didn’t forget anything.”

It was just days later Timmerman was informed the small lump she felt back in autumn was real — she was diagnosed with stage two invasive ductal breast cancer.

“I was thinking that this is the worst timing ever,” she said. “I’m moving to a new job, new location, and I’m going to be geographically separated from my spouse.

I was mad at myself for pushing for a mammogram but also thankful that I knew my body and knew that something was incorrect.”

After receiving her diagnosis, Timmerman went to the Breast Care Center at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, to meet with a surgeon, oncologist, radiation specialist, mental health care-givers and a nutritionist.

Th rough guidance from her doctors, family and friends, Timmerman opted to receive lumpectomy surgery — removal of breast tissue used as a treatment of breast cancer, and had hoped this would kill her cancer.

Unfortunately, she received a call six weeks later stating she would have to begin chemotherapy.

Timmerman did four total rounds of chemo, going in every three weeks.

“Everyone reacts to chemo differently and I had to

be prepared for any situation. Each chemo round was different for my body and I was never sure exactly how I was going to feel or react after I went in.”

Timmerman said she lost hair and gained weight during the process, which are normal symptoms of the invasive therapy. After chemotherapy had ceased, Timmerman was to receive radiation therapy.

“It is not hard to lie on a table and get exposed to radiation, but it is tedious,” she said. “Everyone sees you and touches you. You have to go every day to the hospital which is draining.

Your body reacts to the radiation in different ways, you can get swollen areas, radiation burns and rashes, all the while your body is still working through the chemo side effects.”

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIOR ANDOLPH, Texas — Total Force Airmen and Guardians of the Air Force’s Personnel Center visited with the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force during an all-call at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph May 20, 2022.

Air Force Chief of Staff CQ Brown Jr. opened up the discussion by highlighting AFPC’s efforts in caring for Airmen and Guardians over the past year, in addition to supporting global operations, including the Afghanistan withdrawal.

“You’re dealing with individuals and their assignments and families,” Brown said. “Getting people in the right place at the right time.”

Brown stated that when driving changes, if we aren’t comfortable, then we probably aren’t doing it right. This statement outlines Brown’s strategic approach when implementing action orders in Accelerate Change or Lose.

“We all need to spend a little time being uncomfortable when we talk about acceleration…we do not want to lose,” Brown said.

Throughout the year, as the Air Force commemorates 75 years of service, Brown warned that we must not rest on our laurels in our basic strategy. He briefed the crowd about mission command, a concept heavily defined in the newly revised Air Force Doctrine Publication 1, The Air Force.

Brown encouraged Airmen to read the 16-page document, downsized from 200 pages, that emphasizes looking forward and how Airmen should think of the future.

The key aspect of mission command is for leadership to use delegation, iteration and toleration to provide intent and trust to their Airmen, said Brown.

During the all-call, Brown and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass jointly recognized four members of AFPC for their outstanding achievements.

with you,” Bass said. “I’m especially honored to be here with Gen. Brown to see firsthand the significance of what this organization does for the U.S. Air Force.”

“The best part of my job is focusing on the people,” Bass said. “Our most competitive advantage is our people.”

Bass emphasized that old policies and processes aren’t going to retain the talent that the force will need in the next 10 to 20 years, reflecting on the changes she’s seen in her 29-year career.

“If you think back to the early 90s, we had at that time almost double the number of Airmen serving in the Air Force,” Bass added. “The status quo then won’t work for us today, and it won’t work in the future. We have to be focused on properly managing the talent we have.”

She outlined how senior leaders are focused on improving personnel programs, such as assignments, promotions, evaluations, inflation, housing and childcare.

“There’s not one thing important to you, your fellow wingman, or even your loved ones that is not important to us,” Bass said.

“The quality of life of our Airmen is directly linked to the mission effectiveness of our Air Force.”

Over the past two years, Bass focused on strategies and plans to help drive growth and development across the Total Force.

Bass spoke about the rollout of the Enlisted Force Development Plan, the Blueprint, and the recently revised Blue and Brown books. These resources are living documents and will be available in digital and hard copies for Airmen to access.

Brown, accompanied by his wife Sherene, closed his remarks by speaking about agile combat employment to multi-capable Airmen, and how cultural shifts and small things help gain momentum for change.

The event closed with an opportunity for Airmen and Guardians to participate in a Q&A dialogue and a photography session.

Bass continued her visit back to the AFPC campus with Maj. Gen. Troy E. Dunn, AFPC commander.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo — One of the Defense Department’s top cyber warfare acquisition professionals said the work of computer science and cyber science majors at the U.S. Air Force Academy will pay future dividends in protecting the department’s vast computer network from bad actors.

“What you’re doing in understanding the cyber risk to the Air Force Academy mission is really cutting edge,” said John Garstka, director for Cyber Warfare within the office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Platform and Weapons Portfolio Management at the Pentagon on April 28. “You are using the same tools that we use to conduct Cyber Resiliency Wargames in support of the Combatant Commands.” The hour-long videoconference in the school’s security operations center featured conversation between Garstka; junior cadets Anna Little and Taylor Metzgar; Col. Harold Hoang, the installation’s chief information officer; Mike Andrews, chief technology officer; and Paul Rumpler, chief of network operations. “I’m really trying to use the academy as a lab for what works and what doesn’t,” he said.

“

Garstka, a 1983 Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force Academy, oversees cybersecurity of weapon systems within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment and is he also responsible for conducting capability portfolio management of Joint capabilities for Cyberspace Operations. He pointed out that cyberspace is a contested operational environment – it is a domain of warfare.

He told the group that the Air and Space Force’s dependency on modern IT applications requires cadets to understand the challenges associated with securing and defending an increasingly large range of application tools, including code, scripted languages and cloudbased networking that make up the cyber terrain that enables the combat power of the Joint Force. Much of the cadets’ work and research in this area takes places in the cadet cyber operations squadron, a group of computer science and cyber science majors and their instructors performing mission essential tasks associated with cybersecurity for the Academy.

Little and Metzgar both said the quality of the Academy’s computer science and cyber science curriculum encourages cadets to think outside the box of traditional IT space. All cadets,

they agreed, would benefit from the curriculum whether or not they remained in a cyber-based specialty as officers.

“It’s not enough for computer people to know what’s going on,” Little said.

“We need people thinking about strategy, security and innovative technology on every base and in every career field.”

Garstka said that the projects Little, Metzgar and other cadets in the cyber operations squadron work on for the DOD are helping them develop the knowledge and skills required to provide a defensive shield against pervasive cyber threats.

“I never thought we were cutting edge or further along than the rest of the Air Force, but it turns out the training I’ve had as a cadet goes beyond what many officers get and that training is invaluable,” Metzgar said.

Little is excited about the effect the Academy’s computer science and cyber science department will continue to have on Air Force and Space Force operations.

“Mr. Garstka said that we are on the leading edge but I just see this as a start,” she said.

Little is a computer sciences major and Metzgar is a computer science and cyber science major.

We need people thinking about strategy, security and innovative technology on every base and in every career field.”

Air Force Medical Service launches ‘Nutrition Kitchen’ program

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The Air Force Medical Service is launching “Nutrition Kitchen”, a series of online nutritional cooking classes geared toward service members and their families.

The goal of Nutrition Kitchen is to inspire healthy meal choices by providing options for service members to make realistic changes to foods they are already eating, while also providing the opportunity to learn the science behind those choices and “level up” their nutrition knowledge.

Each episode introduces different options to “level up” a classic meal, starting with simple ingredient substitutions and ending with a chef-curated recipe option, taught

by Chef Tech. Sgt. Opal Poullard, culinary instructor at the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence at Fort Lee, Virginia. Following each cooking episode, Sahra Pak, registered dietician at Travis Air Force Base, shares the science behind the nutritional choices made.

“Nutrition has a profound impact on the health, performance and readiness of our active duty personnel,” said Maj. Gen. Sharon Bannister, Director of Medical Operations, office of the Air Force Surgeon General. “Combatting unhealthy weight gain and obesity and the detriment of poor nutrition is obligatory to improving warfighter readiness.”

Beyond maintaining a healthy weight, improvements to physical and mental performance and underlying chronic health conditions are among some of the benefits.

Giving nutrition the spotlight it deserves is a key tenet of the rapidly growing lifestyle medicine field.

“Nutrition Kitchen is lifestyle medicine at its best,” said Col. Mary Anne Kiel, Air Force Medical Home chief, Air Force Medical Readiness Agency, who chairs the Lifestyle and Performance Medicine working group. “Food has an enormous potential to harm or to heal, but it’s surprising how infrequently we consider the types of foods we are eating every day. It is time for that to change. It’s time to empower the members of all our military services to upgrade their nutrition by making choices to keep them ready for the mission and to improve their health.”

The Nutrition Kitchen series aims to make the sometimes difficult process of both selecting and cooking nutritious meals more engaging, approachable and fun.

The recipes for this series were developed to be tasty, easy to prepare, and low cost all while providing the fuel necessary to “level up” service members’ health.

Service members can look forward to a number of delicious recipes heading their way over the next few weeks. The chef-curated dishes range from banana pancakes with date

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Medics at David Grant USAF Medical Center on Travis Air Force Base, California, are being trained monthly during a week-long course on tactical combat casualty care in an Air Force-wide initiative to standardize medical readiness training for all service members.

This standardization consolidates all TCCC training as the standard of care for first responders (medical and non-medical). It replaces trauma skills previously taught in Self-Aid Buddy Care, according to the Department of Defense Instruction 1322.24, Medical Readiness Training.

At its core, the TCCC course is about providing medical care on the battlefield, but Master Sgt. Victor Figueroa, 60th Medical Group TCCC program director, says that on top of the curriculum require-

ments, they’ve also incorporated a set of Medic-X skills to equip non-clinical medics better to support emergencies.

The skills could be used both at home station if we have a pandemic, or it could be used in combat zones where we have an increase of patients that we need to take care of,” Figueroa said.

Figueroa said that the COVID-19 pandemic spurred an “all hands on deck” scenario to maximize the number of personnel available to support a mass casualty event or emergency.

To better augment such situations, Medic-X skills equip all medics with the ability to assist with activities of daily living; perform oral care; assess pain level; measure bodily intake and outputs; perform universal precautions such as the proper use of personal protective equipment and principles of infection control; assist with post-mortem care; skills involved with respiratory and skincare; the measurement of vital

signs like blood pressure or pulse rate; and specimen collection like with what was seen during COVID-19 testing.

Once trained, these skills enable non-clinical Airmen to perform them autonomously, but astute clinical specialists are ready to assist when necessary.

“My experience so far with the course has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Capt. Andrew Garcia, 60th Medical Group biomedical laboratory officer. “I’ve learned a great deal of skills that are outside of my normal wheelhouse.”

“Even though I’m not a traditional 4N (aerospace medical service specialist) or traditional nurse, I feel like I can help where I need to. It’s important for all of us to be able to do that,” Garcia said.

This training ensures all medics has the ability to support all kinds of emergency situations, furthering the multi-capable Airmen proof of concept.

Keeping our NATO allies strong: TACP specialists save Polish boy

POZNAN AVENIDA, Poland (AFNS) — U.S. Air Force Airmen are sworn to protect the lives of their own countrymen, and the lives of their fellow allies.

Two warfighters from the 4th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron were able to put those vows into practice when they saved the life of a Polish boy May 4.

Tech. Sgt. Luis Garcia and Staff Sgt. Iliya Tereschenko, Tactical Air Control Party specialists, deployed to Poland in April. The pair took a trip to the Poznan Avenida mall when they saw a lone boy collapse onto the floor and convulsing violently. “Foam started coming out of his mouth fairly fast when he dropped to the ground,” Tereschenko said. “He started shaking and that’s when I was like, ‘Something’s not right,’ and I rushed to him.

Tereschenko had seen these signs once before in high school — the boy was suffering from a seizure.

On instinct, both Tereschenko and Garcia immediately acted and positioned the boy on his side. Tereschenko placed a backpack under the boy’s head and held him to avoid self-injury. He inspected the boy’s mouth for any obstructions that might interrupt his breathing and made sure he wasn’t biting down on his tongue.

“There’s a bit of a shock element to it, and then it goes away and you’re like, ‘Oh, I can do something about it,’” Tereschenko said. “So, why not?”

Another problem dawned on the duo as a crowd be-

gan to gather — the language barrier. It was one thing to encounter an emergency, but it was another thing entirely to have an emergency in another country where one does not speak the language.

“It was confusing [because] we do not know the language and it was our first time at the mall,” Garcia said.

“We went and saw the child laying on the floor and there is nobody around and we are like, ‘Holy crap, what do we do?’”

Luckily, the two were able to find a bystander that spoke some English to help translate for them. The boy’s condition began to stabilize soon after and he regained consciousness.

“I was really happy about that,” Tereschenko said.

“Because that is one of those points where this could be a mild seizure or something way worse.”

Mall paramedics then showed up, with first responders arriving soon after.

While saving Polish lives is not a regular part of the 4th EASOS’s job description, working with Polish forces and other NATO allies is a part of their regular job duties while deployed. The 435th Air Expeditionary and Air Ground Operations Wings’ TACP warfighters work with Polish allies during exercises and integration events.

“We show them how we run things, and then we pick up on how they do it,” Tereschenko said. “When it comes to big exercises, we [all] bring what we have to offer to the table. If there’s something they need training on, or vice versa, we get together and help each other out there.”

TACPs primarily provide the U.S. Army with airspace

coordination and integration. TACP assistance also facilitates the production of field-tested techniques, tactics and procedures which strengthens the bond required to have an effective partnership with Polish military forces.

Despite saving a life, neither warfighter calls themselves a hero. Tereschenko felt fortunate to be equipped with the training to save the boy’s life and to be there at the right time.

“I think everyone would have done the same thing, especially if they had the knowledge or training,” Tereschenko said.

Garcia said that there are so many more service members who have achieved greater feats and sacrificed more in service to others that it he didn’t feel justified calling himself a hero.

The pair has not seen the boy since that day, but they were reassured after seeing him regain consciousness and motor ability before letting the first responders take over.

“I do not like being an observer,” Tereschenko said.

“If I have something to contribute, I’ll do it, but I do not like to watch.”

Misfortune, whether at the mall or in contested environments, can strike at any time. The Air Force’s presence in NATO countries is part of the U.S. commitment to supporting allies in the event of emergencies.

“It can happen at any time,” Tereschenko said. “What matters is that you have training and can contribute. I do not think of it as any more than that.”
