ARLINGTON, Virginia (AFNS) — In a Space Force Guidance Memorandum published today, the Space Force announced updates to grooming and uniform policy that reflect the nation’s sixth service identity and culture.

The image Guardians present in uniform is a symbol of service identify and culture, and Guardians at all levels contributed to defining these updates to ensure all uniforms and accoutrements accurately represent the excellence and heritage of service members of the U.S. Space Force.

“Guardians have been waiting a long time for this policy to drop, and I couldn’t be happier to get it out there and start getting this stuff on the shelves,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force Roger A. Towberman. “I appreciate their connection, which brought us these ideas, and the character they’ve shown waiting patiently for us to work through the policy process.

It’s time to space it up!”

SPFGM2022-36-01 Space Force Guidance Memorandum Establishing U.S. Space Force (USSF) Dress and Appearance Standards specifies all of the updates.

The new uniform items are additions Guardians may opt to wear on the interim service dress uniform, and the grooming and uniform policy updates are the outcomes from the service’s first uniform board held in 2021.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program, a congressionally-mandated program, held a milestone CARE event on Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, May 13-20, 2022.

This event was the first AFW2 event hosted on a space force base since the founding of the United States Space Force.

The AFW2 Program provides treatment, services and advocacy to wounded, ill or injured servicemembers as well as their caregivers and families. CARE events bring Wounded Warriors, caregivers, coaches, and volunteers together for a week of workshops, hands-on training and adaptive sports designed to promote resilience and provide a network of support.

Staff Sgt. Kyle Barber, 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron independent-duty medical technician, regularly volunteers for the AFW2 Program and says that CARE events foster a compassionate community.

“I’ve seen it work firsthand,” said Barber. “Being able to talk to people definitely helps because a lot of people have been in the same situations.”

CARE encompasses the four AFW2 support programs: caregiver support, adaptive sports and ambassador workshops, recovering airman mentorship program and resiliency programming, and empowerment in transition.

U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Matthew Lattin was one of the Wounded Warriors who attended the CARE event this year.

Lattin, a 23-year-old from Brentwood, Tenn., was diagnosed with testicular cancer during his junior year at the academy.

After a series of successful treatments, a routine examination the following year revealed that the cancer had spread to his lungs, requiring another three months of chemotherapy.

“The program really helped me get to oncologists and figure out my situation,” said Lattin. “My parents [weren’t in the] military, so they didn’t have much knowledge on what to do, and it seemed like everybody else just knew bits and pieces.”

Lattin said that he will still be allowed to graduate from USAFA after his recovery, but will not commission from the service academy.

Although Lattin will not return to duty, the NCAA Division I swimmer said he was thankful for the support and resources that the AFW2 Program provided him and his family with while on the road to recovery.

The CARE event offered adaptive athletics and music programs for participants to enjoy. Lattin said that the event was a high point for him given the challenges he faced during chemotherapy.

Lattin intends to keep participating in AFW2 events and commends the program for making him still feel part of the U.S. Air Force family.

“It makes me feel like I wasn’t abandoned,” said Lattin. “The program definitely helped - having [the organizers] bring us back for these events is a neat opportunity.”

Air Force conducts successful hypersonic weapon test

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFNS). — A U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress successfully released an AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon, or ARRW, off the Southern California coast, May 14.

Following separation from the aircraft, the ARRW’s booster ignited and burned for expected duration, achieving hypersonic speeds five times greater than the speed of sound.

“This was a major accomplishment by the ARRW team, for the weapons enterprise, and our Air Force,” said Brig. Gen. Heath Collins, Air Force Program Executive Officer for Weapons. “The team’s tenacity, expertise, and commitment were key in overcoming the past year’s challenges to get us to the recent success. We are ready to build on what we’ve learned and continue moving

The 419th Flight Test Squadron and the Global Power Bomber Combined Test Force, or GPB CTF, both at Edwards Air Force Base, California, executed the test.

“The test team made sure we executed this test flawlessly,” said Lt. Col. Michael Jungquist, 419th FLTS commander and GPB CTF director. “Our highly-skilled team made history on this first air-launched hypersonic weapon. We’re doing everything we can to get this game-changing weapon to the warfighter as soon as possible.”

ARRW is designed to enable the U.S. to hold fi xed, high-value, time-sensitive targets at risk in contested environments from stand-off distances. It will also expand precision-strike capabilities by enabling rapid response strikes against heavily defended land targets.

— Canadian Royal Air Force BrigadierGeneral Kevin Whale was awarded the Legion of Merit (Degree of Officer) at Headquarters Space Operations Command, May 24, 2022. BGen Whale received the award for his exceptionally meritorious service to SpOC as the Deputy Commanding General of Transformation (DCG-T).

For the past two years, BGen Whale has led the men and women charged with the organizational transformation of SpOC. While most organizations pride themselves on a culture of innovation, BGen Whale noted that SpOC is uniquely suited to fit.

“Every organization is working on digital transformation and trying to do things better and differently,” said BGen Whale. “The Space Force is not big enough to not do these things: save time in meetings, communicate on collaboration tools, be more flat.”

During his tenure, BGen Whale’s influence helped expand SpOC’s exchange officer program three-fold, adding over fift y-five new international partner billets throughout the command. Under his leadership, DCG-T reduced the duration of command meetings and number of emails significantly.

“If we didn’t have a group of people waking up every day coming to work and thinking about transformation, innovation and culture, this wouldn’t have happened. Our work here so far is paying huge dividends,” said BGen Whale.

He also emphasized the importance of sfspaceorbital.com

being physically integrated with our allies in the space domain.

“Space is a team sport,” said BGen Whale.

“Being physically integrated here helps drive some shared objectives and information sharing. Having allies and partners is absolutely a strategic advantage. It’s the one thing we have that our potential adversaries don’t.”

He reflected on his career and what kept him going.

“I’ve come to the understanding that it doesn’t matter why you joined, it matters why you stay,” said BGen Whale. “One of the things I love about being in the military is whenever you get to a comfort level, you’re pushed to the next level, you’re challenged at the next assignment and we do it early and often.”

BGen Whale leaves SpOC professionals with the following message: “Get into the mentality of being bolder.

Make your leadership uncomfortable, but not angry. Be in that zone of trying new things,” said BGen Whale. “The Space Force absolutely needs that kind of boldness, innovation, and experimentation if we’re going to outpace our potential adversaries. If you think you’re being bold enough, go up a notch. That’s what Space Force needs.”

After a 36-year military career, BGen Whale looks forward to taking off the uniform, spending time with his family in Canada, and working for a Canadian Aerospace company.

CIVILIAN GUARDIANS: Vital assets for DEL 4 mission

BUCKLEY SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The space operators at Space Delta 4 hold many faces, backgrounds, and mission sets. Take a look at Robert Breland, DEL 4 technical director, and you’ll find that sometimes the most vital support isn’t in uniform.

Breland hails from Jackson, Mississippi -- graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1990 after studying psychology and history. Beforehand, Breland was a part of the Air Force’s sister service, as a Russian translator in the Army. After deciding to get out of the military, he spent some time as a marriage and family therapist then as a kids-at-risk therapist before commissioning in the Air Force.

Breland isn’t a fresh face to the space mission, he’s been a strong component in supporting Air Force Space Command before it became a service. Breland hung up his uniform as a Major with his final duty as a flight commander in the 2nd Space Warning Squadron -- a profound unit in space missile warning. After coming to Buckley soon after, he became the technical director for the 460th Operations Group.

As a technical director, Breland advises senior decision makers while also providing reach-back support to those in his chain. Breland has helped process millions of dollars in development and sustainment to personnel, ensuring everything they need to complete the mission.

“One thing that stands out about Rob is how he builds relationships,” said Lt. Col. Jason McCandless, DEL 4 deputy commander. “Rob spends time connecting with people, not just to improve the mission, but because he really cares about meaningful relationships with those he works with.”

Breland insists all the credit goes to the 55+ unique individuals he oversees, explaining them as cornerstones to DEL 4’s success.

“The best thing you can do is make the folks you lead heroes,” said Breland.

Breland is steadfast in his ambitions to posture DEL 4 ahead of its near peers in space missile warning.

“It’s never a dull moment,” said Breland. “There’s so

many emerging threats, ways to solve them and refining solutions; I want to be there for it.”

There is much work to be done and Breland is on the ball with his team as they continue to provide strategic defense for the United States and its allies.

DoD’s largest annual IT, cyberpower event resumes in-person attendance

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. (AFNS) — The Defense Department’s largest annual informa-

tion technology and cyber event returns to in-person attendance this summer.

Over the last two years, the Department of the Air Force IT and Cyberpower Education and Training Event was held virtually due to the pandemic. This year the event returns from its virtual home to its physical home in Montgomery, Aug. 29-31.

Its return also marks a name change. Historically known as the Air Force IT and Cyberpower Education and Training Event, organizers have changed the name to be more reflective of the Department of the Air Force’s role in both air and space.

“This event brings together experts from government, industry and academia to talk through the digital challenges that confront our Airmen and Guardians,” said Lauren Knausenberger, Department of the Air Force chief information officer.

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) — Air Force officials have selected 4,040 technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant, out of 27,296 eligible, for a selection rate of 14.8 percent in the 22E7 promotion cycle, which includes supplemental promotion opportunities.

Due to the recent enlisted grade structure revision conducted by the Department of the Air Force, there has been a one-half percent decrease in master sergeant authorizations leading to a decrease in overall promotion

allocations.

Additionally, the 22E7 cycle also saw an increase in the number of eligible technical sergeants by 2,575 from the previous year, due to high retention rates across the Air Force. Both factors contributed to a lower E7 promotion rate.

The master sergeant promotion list will be available on the Air Force’s Personnel Center website Enlisted Promotions page, the Air Force Portal and myPers May 31, at 8 a.m. CDT. Members will also be able to access their score notices on the virtual Military Personnel Flight application via the AFPC Secure page.

UPDATED PEDIATRIC COVID-19 VACCINE GUIDANCE At this time, the 21st Medical Group is unable to provide COVID-19 boosters for dependents under the age of 18. Use an off-base facility with Tricare support until booster shots can be offered back on the installation.
