WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio. — When Caroline Jones began dating a young Arnie Bunch during her senior year at Morristown East High School, Tennessee, she never dreamed of the life that was in store for her.

“My goal was to open my own day care facility or preschool,” said Caroline. “I had to put all of that on hold while I waited for Arnie to graduate. I didn’t want to be a distraction his last year, so I stayed in Morristown and worked days at a day care and evenings at my father’s pharmacy.”

Caroline said that one of the greatest challenges she faced as a military spouse was securing employment.

Sarah Streyder, the Armed Forces Insurance Space Force Spouse of the Year, accepts the additional honor of Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year during a ceremony in Arlington, Virginia, May 5, 2022. ARLINGTON, Va. — Sarah Streyder was recognized, during a ceremony May 5, as the Armed Forces Insurance Space Force Spouse of the Year and Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year for her advocacy and voting education efforts.

Nominations for this award are made by both the military and civilian communities and honor military spouses from all branches of service for their important contributions and unwavering commitment to the military community and the nation.

Streyder, who works as the Secure Families Initiative executive director, a military-serving nonprofit she founded, was nominated by a friend and colleague.

She received the award after four rounds of advancement, which began in January.

“It’s surprising and humbling,” Streyder said. “I went into this excited and passionate to represent my branch because I’m really proud of the Space Force and everything we’re building.”

Streyder is the first spouse to represent the Space Force, and the first Guardian spouse to receive the top honor of overall military spouse of the year. She became a military spouse nearly seven years ago when her husband Jason, now U.S. Space Force Sergeant and IT requirements manager at the Office of Special Investigations Headquarters, initially joined the Air Force in 2015.

Since becoming a military spouse, Streyder has used her time and talent to spread awareness and educate service and family members about their voting rights.

she said. “I care a lot about voting and advocacy, and making sure military families know how to do that and how to do it well.”

Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond said he was inspired by Streyder’s dedication to serving others.

“I am incredibly proud of Sarah for her selfless support to our military families,” Raymond said. “She is the perfect example of the commitment and connection so many of our Guardian spouses and loved ones bring to our new service, and we are thrilled that Sarah is being recognized as the first-ever Space Force Military Spouse of the Year.”

Mollie Raymond, family advocate herself and the Space Force’s first spouse, also expressed her gratitude for Streyder’s passion for her platform and the military community.

“The life of a military spouse is challenging, but it’s gratifying,” Mollie said. “In addition to taking care of service members, spouses like Sarah do what they can to support the spouse community, and we could not be more grateful and proud.”

While Streyder said she is happy to be named Military Spouse of the Year, she said she is even more ecstatic to continue building a better path for current and future military families.

“The experiences we’ve gone through shape who we are today; however, I think each of us has faced difficulties that we don’t want the next generation of military spouses to go through,” Streyder explained. “It’s less that I would change my own experience; it’s more wanting to improve the future experiences of those coming behind me.” sfspaceorbital.com

Christopher Dong U.S. Space Force Capt. Christopher Dong, 9th Combat Training Squadron (CTS), Space Delta 9-Orbital Warfare, Force Generation Division chief is a Guardian of Chinese descent.

Dong oversees all training for Del 9 and executes mission assurance activities through sustainment and resource allocation. The 9th CTS is the orbital warfare training unit providing dynamic force generation and mission support for combat operations in Del 9.

The unit executes 30 space combat training courses with partners across three field commands, five deltas, 12 squadrons, two program offices, and total force integration.

The CTS implements the training pipeline for vital next-generation and on-orbit protect and defend U.S. Space Force systems.

U.S. Navy Intelligence Specialist Master Chief Petty Officer Stephen M. Harano, Naval Information Force Reserve Region Southwest, is a fifth generation American of Japanese ancestry.

His family migrated from Japan in 1898 and established their home in Berkeley, CA. After the attacks on Pearl Harbor, his family was interned across the west coast, and all of their property and assets were seized.

Two of Harano’s family members volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Japanese-American unit, and were killed in action during World War II. Harano currently serves as the regional senior enlisted leader for an Echelon 3 Type command detachment responsible for the man, train and equip mission of 1,962 Sailors across 25 information warfare units, including 637 embedded sailors in California, Nevada, Hawaii and Guam.

The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program, AFW2, administered by the Air Force Personnel Center, selected Peterson-Schriever Garrison to host the first Warrior Caregiver Support, Adaptive Sports and Ambassador Workshop, Recovering Airman Mentorship Program and Resiliency Programming, and Empowerment in Transition event at a U.S. Space Force base, 16-20 May, 2022 at Peterson.

This AFW2 event highlights more than 120 Wounded Warriors and Caregivers participating in the multi-day, holistic event.

“We are very excited to host our Wounded Warriors for this event,” said U.S. Space Force Col. Shay Warakomski, P-S GAR commander. “It’s a great opportunity to show our Airmen and Guardians there is a program to help them if they ever find themselves wounded, ill or injured. I really look forward to meeting the team from AFW2 and learning more about what they have to offer our service members.”

AFW2 will introduce wounded, ill and injured Airmen, Guardians and their caregivers, from across the globe to the full spectrum of support programs managed by the program.

titions to include: archery, cycling, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball and more. Caregivers and other Wounded Warriors will have the opportunity to learn new resilience skills through music, photography, improvisation and journaling.

“This is a fully holistic event, offering our program population access to programs they may not realize they needed,” said Walt Myhre, AFW2 Support Program section lead. “While most people see the sports first because they are fast and exciting, there are so many other elements offered.”

AFW2 provides resources for Wounded Warriors and Caregivers searching for their next career through our workshops with Empowerment in Transition, while also educating the local Guardians through our Ambassador and Outreach Program sharing the first-hand experience of incredibly resilient and resurgent Airmen and Guardians, explained Myhre.

“We also have a fantastic Recovering Airman Mentorship Program designed to pair someone with a mentor early in their recovery to shepherd them through the process,” said Myhre. “We are ever mindful to connect our population to local support through a robust Community Programs effort as well.”

Guardians are welcome to come out and meet Wounded Warriors, Caregivers and AFW2 staff during the event. The best chance to really make an impact on those attending the CARE event would be to

come out to the Peterson Fitness Center, May 20 starting at noon.

AFW2 will host scrimmages starting with wheelchair rugby, a fast-paced, exciting sport offered at all levels of competition up to, and including, the Department of Defense Warrior Games.

Scrimmages in wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball will immediately follow wheelchair rugby.

“Wounded Warriors don’t have to regularly use a wheelchair to play these sports,” said Derrick Lepper, AFW2 Adaptive Sports program manager. “We adapt the sport so anyone, no matter their wounds, illnesses or injuries is able to participate.

It’s all about showing them what they can do versus what they can’t do, modifying a sport to enhance their recovery and to build independence and confidence.”

Immediately following the scrimmages there will be a closing celebration featuring a musical performance by Rock to Recovery, a non-profit organization formed by former Korn guitarist Wesley Geer.

“This is going to be an out of this world event.” said Myhre. “We’re looking forward to bringing our program to Guardians at all levels, to educate them and demonstrate, in-person how it can help.”

History, telework, life advice and more featured at AFMC Town Hall

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio. — The town hall was the last for AFMC Commander, Gen. Arnold W. Bunch, Jr., and Patricia M. Young, Executive Director, prior to their upcoming transition this summer.

The leaders, along with Chief Master Sgt. David A. Flosi, AFMC Command Chief, provided updates on topics ranging from COVID-19, vaccines and telework to professional development, digital transformation, force sizing, manpower, the current conflict in Ukraine and more.

Following a round of trivia highlighting AFMC history in honor of the 30-year command birthday this coming July, the event began with a discussion the current status of COVID-19 and vaccines, with the reminder from Bunch for all to be vigilant and “to practice common sense” and stay home when feeling ill. The leaders also addressed the future of telework, which became normalized during the pandemic.

“Telework is a management tool. It’s not a right, it’s an entitlement,” said Young. “It is a tool that we can use to work with our force and still meet mission needs. However, it is a commitment and agreement between the employee and the supervisor. Telework in a remote or any situation has a lot more responsibilities and commitment on behalf of the employee, so we want to make sure that supervisors understand and carefully assess each situation and employee’s capability independently. We have to make sure that all workers, supervisors and leaders are using the tool as effectively and efficiently as possible.”

On the recently-released Air Force Blueprint, Flosi took time to explain the importance of the document in guiding

the development of the Airmen the service needs to meet current and future threats.

“While we’d done a good job inside our functional communities in developing a career path for Airmen, we hadn’t addressed what we need writ large from an institutional perspective,” said Flosi. “So we started with the foundational competencies that are shared across all types of service members and the Airman leadership qualities we desired.

Leaders also took time to discuss force sizing, manpower, housing and pay issues as well as the expectations for the digital Air Force of the future. Bunch reiterated the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility activities, stressing the importance of leaders and Airmen having ongoing conversations and discussions on the ‘hard’ topics in order to drive change.

Bunch also took a moment to discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine and its relevance to today’s Airman.

“Watch and learn. Listen to what you can and see how it

applies to your every day job,” said Bunch. “There are a lot of lessons that we need to get out of this, and we can learn a lot right now, especially in terms of logistics. [Logistics] is really important, and that’s what wins wars.”

To close out the event, both Bunch and Young’s final town hall forum, the leaders offered career and life advice to AFMC Airmen for the future.

“It’s your career and yours to manage. You have to make the decisions that are right for you,” said Young. “The last six years have been amazing, and AFMC has a lot to be proud of. It’s our workforce that makes things happen.”

After thanking AFMC Airmen for their ongoing hard work and dedication to the Air Force mission, Bunch’s closing remarks touched on career, life and resiliency for all.

“Don’t run out of family before you run out of Air Force.

You came into this with a family, and you have to take care of them,” said Bunch. “Also, look out for one another. Be the kind of Airmen who are looking out for one another. Be aware of who’s having issues, and check up on each other.

Be that good wingman.”

Bunch ended with remarks on his time at AFMC and his reflections on the command mission.

“The last three years have been a blur, and I have learned so much from each and every one of you. When I took command, I said AFMC was the most important major command in the United States Air Force and that we do our wartime mission every day. There is nothing that I’ve encountered over the last three years that has changed my viewpoint on that in any way. Our Air Force cannot be successful without what you do each and every day. It is an honor to have had the opportunity to serve and work for you all…so thank you.”

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordinance Disposal Flight hosted a six-mile memorial ruck to honor the late Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler, 21st CES EOD technician, at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, May 6, 2022.

Seidler was killed by an improvised explosive device Jan. 5, 2012, while deployed to Helmand province, Afghanistan, performing route clearance while attached to a U.S. platoon. The rest of Seidler’s team, Team “Tripwire,” Tech. Sgt. Matthew Schwartz and Senior Airman Bryan Bell, also lost their lives that day.

“We try to do this ruck three times a year: on [Seidler’s] birthday, the day he died and on Memorial Day,” said Tech. Sgt. Carl Disher 21st CES EOD operator and administrator.

The ruck begins at the EOD building and leads to a memorial that was dedicated to Seidler in Jan. 2014. Here, the participants complete a series of exercises before rucking back to the starting point.

“I think it’s important to remember those who served before us, especially those who gave their lives,” said Senior Airman Steven Nguyen, 21st CES EOD technician.

“This ruck gives us a chance to honor them and to remember the impact they made.”

The EOD flight extended the invitation to all CES members, with a turnout of nearly 50 Airmen coming together in remembrance of Seidler and his team.

AF Academy invites public comment on visitor center hotel construction plan

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The 10th Civil Engineer Squadron released a public notice inviting public comment on the construction plan for the new visitor center hotel at the U.S Air Force Academy.

The notice reads as follows: Notice of availability, cultural resources management USAFA, new visitor center’s hotel “The Academy’s built and natural environment involves numerous historic properties subject to compliance requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended. When undertakings planned to support the Academy mission have the potential to impact such properties, Section 106 of the NHPA requires the Academy to collaborate with various stakeholders. This process includes offering awareness to the public for an opportunity to express views, as well. General information on the NHPA and the role of the public can be found at https://www. achp.gov/sites/default/fi les/documents/2021-01/CitizenGuide2021_011321.pdf .

“The Academy has ongoing Section 106-related planning for construction planned for the TrueNorth Commons/Gateway Visitor Center project near the Academy’s North Gate, in vicinity of I-25. The project’s hotel phase of development appears to have potential for adverse effects regarding two historic properties, a proposed USAFA-wide National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) District, termed 5EP.595, pertaining to the landscape associated with the Academy’s original design by Skidmore

Owens & Merrill architectural firm; and the Cadet Area National Historic Landmark (5EP.4680, listed in the NRHP April 1, 2004).

Both of these historic properties may receive indirect adverse effects, such as view-related impacts, from the project’s hotel regarding: (1) the height and mass of the proposed hotel complex, (2) the hotel complex’s proposed exterior lighting, and (3) the hotel complex’s proposed exterior building materials.

“The Academy has developed a draft plan to resolve these adverse effects by avoiding, minimizing, and/or mitigating the expected impacts. The final plan would become an amendment to the project’s Section 106 Programmatic Agreement (PA) produced in 2019.

“This amendment to the project’s PA is at a draft stage where views of the public are welcomed. Comments or questions, including requests for a copy of draft amendment, may be directed to email address 10CES.CENPP.Planning_Programming@us.af.mil with subject line stating “ATTN CR Manager” or by regular mail to “ATTN CR Manager, 10 CES/CENP, 8120 Edgerton Drive, USAFA, CO 80840”. The 10th CES manages the Academy’s built and natural environments with respect for heritage, sustained facility excellence and a focus on the future infrastructure of the Academy.

Calvelli swears in as Department of the Air Force space acquisition and integration lead

Aside from the general home inspection which covers all components of the home form the roof to the foundation, many buyers are also testing for radon and having the sewer scoped. All these inspections can be a little pricey, but a $150 sewer scope is much less expensive than an $8,000 to $10,000 sewer line replacement down the road.

Many buyers are putting in their offers that the inspection is for health, safety, and functionality of the system and the components of the home. This is really what an inspection is for so that you know exactly what you are buying and there shouldn’t be any big surprises in the future. No resale home will be perfect, but you will be aware of what to expect.

We are seeking a SALES EXECUTIVE who is looking for opportunities and creative challenges to join our team to produce some of the most important publications in our community, including the Colorado Springs Independent, the Colorado Springs Business Journal, the Southeast Express, Pikes Peak Bulletin and others.

The SALES ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE works with a team to achieve sales goals, typically from new clients or assigned accounts. In this role they will identify market opportunities, prospect and engage new clients, develop creative marketing proposals and manage accounts. An awardwinning design team will assist in producing sharp, attention-grabbing advertising. Ability to prospect new clients and boost sales for existing clients is a key to success.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Achieving assigned sales goals.

Prospecting and developing new client relationships and building on existing client relationships.

Consulting with clients to grow their businesses and assist in their marketing success.

Developing innovative proposals and delivering sales presentations.

Working with a team of professionals who will help you meet your personal goals.

Helping the team generate and execute new products and campaigns.

Assisting in finding sponsors for marque events held by 6035 Media.

REQUIREMENTS: Three to five years in sales and/or marketing positions.

Superior business and negotiation skills.

Ability to create and present opportunities to clients

SALARY $36,000-$40,000 base, with commission in first year.
