Greenlandic Heritage Week and Armed Forces Day in the Arctic

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — The 821st Air Base Group at Thule Air Base hosted its annual Greenlandic Heritage Week and Armed Forces Day celebration in conjunction with the Easter weekend from April 15-17, 2022.

This year, 42 personnel (27 adults and 15 kids) participated from three of the local villages (Qaanaaq, Mariusaq, and Savissivik), with most making the 3-4 day trek by dog sled (20 dog sleds) across the ice.

For some perspective, the nearest village in this northwest region of the Arctic is more than 70 miles from Thule Air Base, which is only accessible by plane, boat or dog sled. Thule Air Base, located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle, has held this event for nearly 50 years as a way to maintain relations with the nearby villages, sharing cultural traditions, crafts and meals during these times together.

Greenlandic Heritage Week brings together four distinct cultures from Greenland, Denmark, Canada and the United States.

With an increased interest in the Arctic from a Global and Department of Defense perspective, it is vitally important to understand the different cultures and develop mutually beneficial relations with the local communities in the region. This annual event does just that.

Many hunters and their families come to Thule Air Base each year as a celebration and vacation, with Airmen and Guardians getting the chance to experience this unique culture that survives in the most remote locations in Greenland.

The Inughuit people who live in Northwest Greenland are the northernmost people in North America and make up about one percent of the population of Greenland.

The relations between the Americans and the Inughuit go way back, with one significant example dating back to the North Pole Expedition where explorers Robert Edwin Peary and Mathew Alexander Henson claimed to be the first to have reached the geographic North Pole along with four Inughuit hunters. Those hunters may still have descendants here in this area, maybe even participating in the annual Greenlandic Heritage Week and Armed Forces Day events at Thule Air Base.

The weekend began on Friday with an opening and welcome ceremony coupled with a free potluck dinner at the base community center.

Sigrid Hansen, Danish liaison officer,; Fini Carlsen, Danish police inspector; and Mr. Bill Womack, Vectrus Services program director,.

The remarks for this cultural engagement were translated to the local villagers by Ane-Louise Ivik, a Greenlandic contractor from Savissivik who works for Vectrus Services on base.

At this event, military, civilian and contractor personnel from the base were offered the opportunity to purchase tickets to receive a helicopter ride from Air Greenland, snow mobile rides and a ride on one of the dog sleds.

As a special addition, raffle tickets were sold for a select number of personnel to ride on a dog sled during the race, with the winners of the raffle being announced at the end of the evening, pairing team Thule members with the dog sled owners and hunters.

In addition to the opening event, the guests were also offered the opportunity to tour the fire department and ride in some of the vehicles, ask questions to combat arms Airmen manning a security forces static weapons display and tour the vehicle maintenance shop.

The following Saturday, an Easter egg hunt was held at the community center. This was particularly exciting for the kids, who each received a gift bag with goodies and their own backpack with school supplies, some of which were donated by Peterson-Schriever Garrison, Operation Julemand, and the Air Base Group Commander.

The craft fair was an opportunity for our Greenlandic guests to sell their crafts to the base. These crafts included polar bear skins, arctic fox pelts, walrus tusks, polar bear teeth and claws and hand-crafted jewelry.

The final day of Greenlandic Heritage Week was by far the busiest with various events and great weather for the outside activities.

Events on the ice included Boots N’ Broom Hockey, on a cleared part of the ice using hockey nets from the fitness center, snow mobile rides by the Danish Police Inspector with profits going to Operation Julemand, dog sled rides with profits going directly to the hunters and villagers who traveled to participate in the weekend events. Also, lunch was provided by Vectrus Services at the port ramp.

The culminating event was the annual dog sled race which involved 14 dog sleds (approximately 150 dogs) traversing the ice of North Star Bay on a mapped-out, 7 mile course passing icebergs and overlooking Thule Air Base.

member aboard for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in the Arctic.

The youngest competitor was, 11-year-old, Nuka Kristensen and the oldest was his grandfather, the village elder, 79-year-old Qaerngaaq Nielsen.

Nielsen, from Savissivik, remains active with his dog sled and has participated in most of the Heritage Week races dating back to the 1970s, which he reflects on fondly, and enjoys coming every year with his family.

Over this time, he has been fortunate enough to win nine races and claim the top prize of a hunting rifle.

He said he wants to participate again next year if his health permits it and intends to fare better in the race with another year of training his dogs, stating he had to train all new dogs, having lost all of his dogs last year because they fell in the ocean while transiting the ice to hunt and commute for daily needs.

After the events on the ice had concluded, the guests were asked to join in the evening at the Fitness Center and Bowling Center for the closing ceremony, award ceremony and free pizza and bowling. McGee and Womack announced the top three finishers in the dog sled race and presented the prizes accordingly: for 1st Prize, a Savage 30-06 Rifle with Bushnell Scope for hunting polar bears and musk ox, for 2nd a camping tent, two sleeping bags and portable heater and for 3rd a portable compact generator.

This year, Ole Kristensen, along with Staff Sgt. Kaylah Salita, 821st Security Forces Squadron, bested the other 13 competitors on a beautiful sunny day with a time of 28 minutes, 8 seconds. He said it is very important for he and his family to come and participate in Greenlandic Heritage Week, and they tell their friends and family who do not live in Savissivik that they are vacationing at Thule Air Base while they compete in the dog sled race and other events.

The men and women were honored to host and spend the weekend with our Arctic neighbors, building relations, creating memories and fostering a sense of community in the farthest north inhabited region of Greenland. The weekend event was truly a success in providing 350 meals to Greenlandic family members, raising $300 for Operation Julemand, providing $1,700 in earnings to the hunters for dog sled rides and saving $1,000 to be put aside for next year’s event.

The 821st Air Base Group looks forward to hosting again in 2023, and as always wishes its Greenlandic friends safe travels on the unpredictable ice and across the sea.

VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif. — The J-FIRE, or joint firefighter integrated response ensemble, is a unique set of equipment that firefighters wear when responding to chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) emergencies. These firefighters have to be qualified and trained to use this gear, and at Vandenberg Space Force Base, they don the J-FIRE annually. Tech. Sgt. Marvin Lilly, the NCOIC of Logistics here at Vandenberg Fire and Emergency Services, is the lead for this iteration of the training.

“First and foremost we have to work with the 30th Logistics Readiness Squadron to get the gear we need,” Lilly said. “Then, after we set the dates and times with the different shifts at the fire station, we head out to the training area to get started.”

Every service member has to go through CBRN certification at their respective basic trainings, but for these firefighters, there are a few tweaks to their gear as opposed to the standard joint service lightweight integrated suit technology (JLIST) ensemble.

“We wear the standard trousers, coat, and gloves,” Lilly said. “The mask however is different compared to the standard M50. So we do have the normal ensemble elements, but we’re wearing this all under our fire gear.”

The firefighters wear an estimated 75 pounds of gear when responding to emergencies in CBRN environments, which is over 60 pounds heavier than the standard JLIST ensemble.

In the live fire portion of the training, there is team staged in a vehicle, a team on the ground with a hose, and a contingency team in case anything were to go wrong.

“The first thing that we would do when we arrive on scene in response to a fire on an aircraft, which is what we’re training with, is to have a team roaming the aircraft with a vehicle that sprays water to put out any spot fires, and cool the aircraft’s fuselage,“ Lilly said. “Following that, crews are then permitted to make entry into the aircraft.”

As always, safety is paramount, so there are multiple safety officers on site during the training, with the lead safety officer carrying a switch that gets flipped if a firefighter taps their helmet three times. After that signal is given, the officers will then take the necessary steps to get their firefighters out safely.

Following the training, firefighters are reminded to hydrate and refuel their bodies immediately after the gear is taken off. Though this unit has a different mission than other fire departments, they still make the time to make the training happen.

“So as firefighters on Vandenberg, our duties can be a little different because of the mission here, having to monitor static fires for rockets and be on standby prior to, during, and after a launch. So since we only do this training annually, we make it a big deal and worthwhile.” Lilly said.

Taking action today, assuring the mission of tomorrow Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Department of the Air Force News

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — As a steward of almost 9 million acres encompassing forests, prairies, deserts, wetlands, and coastal habitats, the Department of the Air Force recognizes the importance of protecting and sustaining the natural environment.

Taking steps to preserve biodiversity, mitigate damaging effects of climate change, and use land, energy, and resources responsibly all help ensure our installations can sustain critical missions.

“In celebration of the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day, we are proud to highlight how our installations are leading the way to save energy, preserve habitats, and promote sustainability through innovative infrastructure, clean energy generation, and conservation,” said Nancy Balkus, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Environment, Safety, and Infrastructure.

As the largest fuel consumer in the federal government, the DAF is expanding efforts to build climate resilience by prioritizing operational energy (aviation fuel) investments that increase force readiness, optimize fuel consumption, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The DAF also continues to find innovative ways to produce clean, onsite power to reduce emissions, while bolstering energy security and installation resilience to electrical outages from mission threats or extreme weather events.

For example, the DAF is piloting Department of Defense’s first micro-reactor at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, which will provide up to 5 megawatts of reliable clean energy to supplement current installation energy sources.

Additionally, Edwards AFB, California, will complete one of the country’s largest solar photovoltaic array projects in 2022, adding 520 megawatts of renewable electricity to the grid and creating more than 1,000 jobs. This effort builds on initiatives from installations like Hill AFB, Utah, and Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, to augment base power supply with solar energy.

The DAF is also expanding its electrical vehicle fleet to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve carbon-neutral and net-zero emission goals by 2050. In 2020, the Department was recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy with a 2020 Federal Energy Management Program award for increasing Alternative Fuel Vehicle inventory by 42.7% when compared to fiscal year 2018. AFVs now represent more than 24% of the total DAF fleet. sfspaceorbital.com

DAF installations are expanding environmental conservation measures by implementing sustainable infrastructure and landscaping practices.

Dyess AFB, Texas, partnered with the city of Abilene, Texas, to repurpose oil pipelines to deliver approximately 160 million gallons of treated wastewater to the base each year for irrigation. This partnership has helped Abilene reduce water demand by 2%, while saving the Air Force more than $300,000 annually.

At Nellis AFB, Nevada, the DAF replaced water-thirsty grasses with efficient desert landscaping, reducing water consumption by 10%. The base is also using robots to clean their solar panels – which power 25% of the base – resulting in a 75% reduction in water use compared to manual cleaning methods. Other installations actively pursuing sustainable landscaping practices include, but are not limited to: Laughlin AFB, Texas, Beale AFB, California, March Air Reserve Base, California, and Mountain Home AFB, Idaho.

To the DAF, responsible stewardship means not only reducing its environmental footprint, but also protecting and repairing habitats that are already facing degradation.

In 2021, the Air Force Civil Engineer Center secured more than $10 million to protect mission readiness and the environment at Tyndall AFB, Florida.

In October 2018, the installation suffered a direct hit from Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 hurricane, resulting in more than $3 billion in damage. The grant will help improve the resilience of the installation through enhanced shoreline habitats, which provide a natural buffer against storm surges.

The project will include up to 1,000 feet of living shorelines, 3,500 feet of submerged shoreline, and 1,500 feet of new oyster reef habitat.

Travis AFB, California, is also investing in natural solutions to preserve habitat, while saving money. The installation uses approximately 300 sheep and goats for targeted grazing to clear invasive species from steep hillsides and rocky terrain, which promotes the growth and diversity of native species including those that are threatened and endangered. The animals also reduce fire hazards and eliminate the need for debris disposal.

By making more environmentally-informed decisions – this Earth Day and everyday – the DAF is working to ensure that it can continue sustain all the planet has to offer for Airmen, Guardians, their families, and our nation for decades to come.

Schriever lifts cellphone ban in the RA

Starting May 9, 2022, cellphones will be allowed into the restricted area at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado. The ban on personal electronics in the RA was lifted in order to improve internal communications as well as connecting Airmen and Guardians with family while at work.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Starting May 9, 2022, cellphones will be allowed into the restricted area at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado. This will also allow Airman and Guardians to bring their personal phones, smart watches and fitness devices into the approved locations of the RA. “The push for lifting the ban on personal electronics came from Peterson-Schriever Garrison leadership wanting those working in the RA to have their phones for emergencies as well as improving the working environments,” said U.S. Air Force Tech.

With the ban lifted on personal devices, there are rules explaining what you can and can’t do in accordance with the “Schriever Space Force Base Restricted Area Personal Cellphone, Government Cellphone, Smartwatch and Personal Electronic Devices Policy.”

All members bringing in a cellphone, regardless if it is personal or government issued, will complete training on the proper usage within the RA with their unit security manager.

While the general RA is starting to allow personal electronics in, there are still specific locations that they will remain banned: Anywhere processing classified information such as sensitive compartmented information facilities or special access program facilities, Bldg. 400, Bldg. 700, Bldg. 712, Bldg.

720, Bldg. 730 (with the exception of the first-floor lobby, High Plains Café, and the “shopette” area)

Airmen and Guardians must also be aware of what personal electronics they can and cannot bring into the authorized locations.

The use of photography and video on cellphones is still strictly prohibited within the RA due to force protection and operation security concerns, unless the member has properly received clearance through Public Affairs.

Violations of improper personal cellphone and government cellphones usage can result in an Article 92-- Failure to Obey an Order or Regulation, or RA removal based on the severity of the offense.

ZIPLINING Join us for a high-flying day of adventure as we head to the Broadmoor’s Soaring Adventures Combination course right here in Colorado Springs. Cruise over pines, creeks, valleys, a natural granite arch, Midnight Falls, and the trails leading to Seven Falls as you soar along the Woods Course, as well as the thrill of soaring over steep drops, unique rock formations and jagged cliffs, and across Seven Falls Canyon on the Fins Course. This course also features several custom-built suspension bridges and a controlled 180-foot rappel to the canyon floor at the end!

et ready to rock and roll! As snow melts in the Rockies, the runoff fills our rivers and streams. That means a rapid flow, tumbling waters, waves splashing against rock, and shouts of joy from rafters – awesome rafting down the Arkansas River, one of the most rafted rivers in the country.

Early in the season – mostly in June and early July – rafting can seem like a cross between riding a roller coaster and a bucking bronco. Later in the season, typically late July / early August, the volume of water flowing down the Arkansas River decreases and the river becomes a more gentle force.

If you’ve never gone whitewater rafting before and you’re even slightly interested, my advice is to sign up and go! It’s thrilling, exciting, lots of fun, good for laughs, and definitely something to write home about. You must know how to swim, and there are age and weight restrictions for safety reasons.

Outdoor Recreation offers whitewater rafting trips starting Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, and continuing through the first weekend in August.

FULL DAY RAFTING: ROYAL GORGE The Royal Gorge can be viewed from the top of the canyon on one of the world’s largest suspension bridges, or by train alongside the river at the bottom of the canyon. But the best way to experience the Royal Gorge is from the seat of a raft. This trip is not for the faint of heart or for those who are nervous about rafting. We also do not recommend this trip if this is your first time rafting. For the thrill seekers looking for the most adventure, our Royal Gorge trips offer the most technical and exciting rafting while floating alongside huge canyon walls. Come see why the Royal Gorge is one of the largest attractions in Colorado!

Week 1: May 31 – June 3 – SECRET LIFE OF DOGS: – Full

Take a dive into the many different roles dogs play in our community, from making people feel happy in a hospital to taking down bad guys. Join us to find out about the Secret Life of Dogs. Cost $100.

Week 2: June 6-10 – SCI-FI: – Full

Space, the final frontier….or is it! Launch into summer by exploring what is possible with science and asking “What if?” Cost $140.

Week 2: June 6-10 – SOCCER: – Space available

For ages 7 and older. From 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Cost is $100.

Soccer camp is for youth ages 7 and older and will expand the fundamentals of soccer and provide youth with an understanding of the various techniques and skills used in soccer. Air Rifle camp is for youth ages 9 and older, and provides youth an introduction to shooting sports. Activities will include (but are not limited to): Rifle safety, targeting accuracy, tactical analysis, risk management and teamwork while shooting. Archery camp is for youth ages 9 and older, and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Archery can be enjoyed year round and teaches focus, self-discipline, confidence, goal setting and life skills. Learn range safety and fundamental archery skills, work with knowledgeable coaches, while mastering bows, arrows and targets. Camp will be held Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. (Friday, July 1, is a Family Day; the YC is closed.)

Learn about how coasters and slides are made.

We’ll build our own and experience the excitement of both at Elitch Gardens! (Monday, July 4, Independence Day is a federal holiday; the YC is closed.) Cost $150.

Week 9: July 25-29 – SPORTS: MULTISPORT WEEK: – Space available

Join us for a week of non-traditional sports.

MultiSports camp is for youth ages 9 and older, and will teach the fundamental concepts of how to play Disc Golf, Flag Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, and Volleyball. (Sports listed are subject to change.) The goal of the MultiSports Camp is to expand and assist youth (ages 9 to 18) in understanding the different sports and provide team building activities. Team building and a hands-on learning experience while having fun is the goal.

Nails, drills, and skills is what it takes to build a wooden master piece. Youth will work with staff to learn the safety and skill of working with their hands to create a project of their own. Cost $110.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE A FAMILY CHILD CARE PROVIDER

• 1. Complete an application and return it to the FCC office along with a copy of your high school diploma or equivalent.

• 2. Participate in family interview and reference check.

• 3. Consent to agency checks by Security Forces, Life skills and Family Advocacy.

• 4. Complete required orientation training.

• 6. Consent to in-home inspections by Fire Department, Public Health, Safety and FCC Coordinator.

• 7. Obtain $500,000 of liability insurance.

• EXTENDED DUTY CARE: Available during non- traditional hours for parents working temporarily extended or additional shifts to support the mission.

• DEPLOYMENT CARE: Space Force/Air Force Family Child Care Deployment/Remote Child Care Support will provide additional child care hours for deployments/remote assignments. Families are authorized 16 hours for pre-deployment, 16 hours each month of the deployment/ remote assignment, and 16 hours post-deployment.

• AF FCC Deployment Child Care Support may be used once the member has orders and ends 60 days upon return from the deployment. AF FCC Remote Assignment Child Care may be used each month that the member is on remote assignment.

Lifts can be done virtually by providing a video of their lift or they can be done in person with the assistance or observation of the Fitness Center staff.

• Award is a T-shirt for the first 1000 pounds and their name on the leader board.

ABOUT OUR FLIGHT SCHOOL

We are an FAA Part 141 Flight and Ground School. One of the many advantages of a Part 141 School is the FAA oversight of all aspects of training and aircraft. Approved Part 141 schools guarantee the student will receive training in accordance with FAA standards. Also, we are affiliated with Utah Valley State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The Rocky Mountain USAF Flight Training Center (aka Aero Club) offers a Private Pilot Ground School about every eight to nine weeks.

We often – not always, but often – get funding that pays for most or all of the Private Pilot Ground School fee ($650) for single active duty members. A basewide blast usually announces these periodic opportunities. Watch your inbox for future announcements.

ABOUT OUR PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL: • Currently we are offering a hybrid course consisting in Jeppesen online modules, and once a weeknight meets with the instructor through ZOOM. • The Private Pilot Ground School is an 8-9 week course, at $650.

• The course is Jeppesen online, and you meet with the instructor, through ZOOM, once a weeknight (6-8 p.m.) to go over materials and ask any questions.

• Completion of this course prepares you to take the FAA Written with the endorsement from the instructor.

• After you pass your FAA Written, you have 2 years to complete the Flying portion and pass the Check ride with an FAA DPE for your Private Pilot License requirements.

• Completion of this course satisfies the FAA minimum requirement for the Ground School portion to get your Private Pilot License.

• Supplies that come with the class include: Jeppesen Online Login, Instructor time, Kneeboard, Plotter, Metal E6B, Logbook, Maneuver Guide, and Course Syllabus.

You can start your flight training before, after or simultaneously with our Ground School; that is totally up to you and instructor availability. It is recommended that when you do start flight training, fly 2-3 times per week for optimal training. That way you are not relearning lessons and adding to your number of flights/hours ($). All flights are pay as you go. Our T41C’s are our trainers. A one-hour flight with the instructor for two hours (one in plane and one for pre and post flight procedures) is about $192.

SLD 45 stands up the first USSF Diversity & Inclusion Office

PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. — Space Launch Delta 45 made history

October 25, 2021, as it became the first Delta in the U.S. Space Force to stand up a full time position dedicated to diversity and inclusion (D&I).

Perla Brito is the first to take on the historic position as the director of D&I for SLD 45. Her mission is to provide leadership, guidance and oversight of execution on policies, new practices and initiatives regarding all things D&I. The role also includes engagement in the community to raise awareness to people from all walks of life on the opportunities that United States Space Force offers.

“SLD 45’s priorities and values consist of investing in its people for 100% mission success,” said Brito. “We cannot fully invest in people without fostering a culture of dignity, respect and inclusion. As a new service, we must acknowledge that an organization as a whole is only as good as its employees. Devoting a great deal of time and resources to our total force is the only way to put people first, regardless of their race, religion, gender, age, physical disability or sexual orientation to have an advantage over competitors.”

Brito said connecting in a collaborative environment has been the most inspiring and impactful opportunity she’s had so far.

“We’ve been able to bring together some inspirational leaders to talk about their careers and the challenges they’ve faced throughout the years,” said Brito.

“It was encouraging to hear these types of leaders talk about how they overcame the obstacles they had to face, especially in male-dominated career fields. The panel discussion that was held in January has inspired many young Airmen and Guardians to continue to work towards achieving their goals no matter how many roadblocks they might encounter.

Discussions of this nature remind us to continue our work to advance the status of women in the workplace worldwide.”

According to research, Brito said having a more diverse workforce drives successful business outcomes for any organization.

“D&I is so important because, as the nation’s largest employer, the federal government strives to be a model organization that treats all employees with dignity and respect in the workplace,” said Brito.

“Through our commitment to D&I initiatives, we can foster and create a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace that leads to healthier environments where employees can flourish, develop their potential, and contribute to the success of their workplace and the mission.” sfspaceorbital.com

As a military spouse, Brito said she learned to appreciate people’s differences and connect with them in many different aspects of life.

“My job is about implementing a cultural change in the organization by propelling innovation, creativity, and teamwork forward,” said Brito. “Taking this position meant that I had the distinct honor to make an impact through creating a culture and workforce that can be their authentic selves and thrive.”

Although SLD 45 was the first, the Space Force has stood up four more full time D&I positions since its creation, and the plan is to have a permanent position at every installation across the service.

Dr. Carrie Baker, from the DAF Office of Diversity and Inclusion, said this is all in an effort to have an effective and sustained approach in the implementation of diversity and inclusion priorities set forth by our Senior Leaders.

“The importance of these positions is to address the growing demands regarding diversity, equity inclusion and accessibility efforts (e.g. education and training, diversity councils, employment practices, etc) at the base level,” said Baker. “Prior to this position it was dependent on volunteers which made it challenging to provide consistency, have a sustained impact , and provide the immediate actions necessary to support our workforce.”

Baker said D&I is an extension of the Space Force’s core values and these new professionals will work with Leaders to facilitate a workplace where every Guardian and Airmen has access to development, retention, and advancement to opportunities in support of their commitment to serve our nation.

“The SLD 45 D&I office supports at large the vision that diversity is a vital strategic military resource to uphold our national security efforts,” said Baker. “We have a global mission and we need to draw on the wide variety of backgrounds, viewpoints, and lived experiences from all our personnel to meet mission demands”.

Brito’s efforts as the new director of D&I will help advance and embed diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility throughout the workforce at SLD 45.

“Diversity and inclusion is not a program for people to run, it is a collective organizational culture and climate change,” said Brito. “It is a leadership responsibility and priority to ensure that we create inclusive environments that leverage the diverse talents of all our people for mission readiness. All personnel must be able to feel empowered to maximize their individual strengths and abilities and perspectives for the good of the mission.

AFRL teams with NISN, University of Colorado, for cost-saving capstone focused on first responders

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFRL) — Haythem Mansour has a problem. But he also has “a very big passion for anything science” and he’s having a really “good time” with his problem, Mansour said from his science hub in Colorado.

Mansour, a mechanical engineering senior at the University of Colorado Denver, leads one of two student teams assigned to a capstone project sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and National Security Innovation Network (NSIN). The teams’ problem, presented

by AFRL’s Dr. John McIntire, is the loss of communication and navigation abilities first responders often encounter with indoor emergencies.

McIntire, a security research analyst for AFRL’s Sensors directorate, thought the old problem could benefit from some young-mind innovation. So did Brandon Greene, NSIN’s regional director for its Rocky Mountain Region.

Both teamed with CU Denver knowing the school’s reputation for brilliant engineers.

Mansour and his classmates did not disappoint. They were given two semesters to develop solutions, with research starting fall 2021 and a final prototype presentation expected in May 2022. The first prototype surfaced in November.

“They were really moving fast,” McIntire said. “They’re very talented and motivated.”

Both Greene and McIntire expect to be at the teams’ final presentations in May and they are already discussing further development for the anticipated prototypes. “It looks like (the students) have come up with something that has not been looked at before,” Greene said.

NSIN helped make the research happen via its Capstone program, which matches existing university capstone courses with U.S. military commands to help solve real-world national security challenges. The NSIN partnership, a first for McIntire, has provided resources and opportunities beyond what he had during previous joint AFRL projects with universities. He has been especially impressed by the commitment Greene and other NSIN facilitators have shown to keeping great ideas alive after capstones end.

“They have been very proactive,” McIntire said. “They 10

want to see stuff move forward as much as I do.”

The resources NSIN contributed were welcome to the AFRL world where competition for research dollars is always fierce. The portion AFRL committed to the venture with CU Denver is easily a bargain, McIntire pointed out, when compared to traditional research models that usually cost at least four times as much, or more.

Ventures with university students may not look “as sophisticated” as the old way of doing things, McIntire admits, “but you get some very innovative solutions. The bang for the buck there is just incredible.”

Included in the bargain is another valuable benefit: exposing the young problem-solvers of today to ways they can be the leaders who meet the complex security threats of tomorrow. Felicia Harlow is helping make that happen. She works with McIntire as an AFRL senior security research engineer and mentored the CU Denver students with him.

Harlow is also part of what she called the “mass exodus” the Department of Defense will soon see when a large crop of elder engineers needs to be replaced after retirement. But unlike her generation, the students Harlow hopes will take her place “have a lot (more) choices” when graduating into a hyper-technology world.

Persuading students to “take their talents” to national defense, Greene said, is one of NSIN’s main goals. Ideally, Greene added, a Capstone student who was previously bound for a tech giant like Amazon says, “I had such a good time with this DOD project. Instead of Amazon, let me go see if I can do that” for my country.

Mansour said he asked to be part of the first responder project because he “wanted to do something for the benefit of the public,” and he “loves doing good for people.”

The alure of the AFRL name was also a big attraction, he admitted, but his previous impression of working for the government was based on “bad stereotypes.” He didn’t give it serious consideration until he worked with people like McIntire, Harlow and Greene. Mansour not only took part in a recent NSIN Hirethon, an accelerated recruitment program for DOD organizations, he encouraged his teammates to participate.

said, though his AFRL experience will travel with him post-graduation. His future will benefit from the capstone, and it connects the DOD to his future.

“It’s given me more confidence,” Payne said. “We did this.

We developed something kind of cool; something kind of innovative … and it’s given me a lot of good connections.”

Another resource made available by NISN is access to a network of students at other schools with similar interests and challenges. It’s one of many advantages that came with the DOD sponsorship, according to Chad Hawkinson, the CU Denver lecturer instructing students working on the first-responder problem. Hawkinson was able to step aside, for example, and let McIntire teach a class on patents.

“Dr. McIntire is a wonderful resource,” Hawkinson said.

“He brings a lot of experience … that’s been extraordinarily helpful. He’s been among the most engaged sponsors (of all CU Denver capstones).”

Some of academia’s best to benefit from the type of engagement described by Hawkinson are already working at premier DOD innovation arms like AFWERX and SpaceWERX, and “they are so far ahead of their peers in so many things,” Greene said. “They are blowing their supervisors’ minds with what they are able to accomplish.”

Greene taught future officers at the Air Force Academy before joining NSIN. He has long witnessed the powerful union of youth and innovation, and he knows the defense strategies of the last century have become insufficient and unsustainable.

Solving the problems of an unpredictable future needs to include deep engagement with the Haythem Mansours of the academic world. That is how, Greene said, “we regain our competitive edge.”

Provide a safe place for pets during the inspection Whether a prospective buyer, home inspector, appraiser, or real estate agent is coming into your home, it’s important to provide a safe place for your pets to be. This may mean a sturdy, appropriately-sized kennel in the home. It can also mean taking your pets to a friend or relative that they are comfortable with until everything is more settled. Please remember, many of these professionals will need to view both the interior and the exterior of the home. Simply putting pets in an open yard is not enough.

Help the buyer and yourself feel comfortable during the inspection The inspector will more than likely be meeting with the prospective buyer during the inspection. You should understand that the inspector works for the buyer and the information about the inspection is provided only to the buyer.

Because of this, the buyer can feel uncomfortable discussing the inspection with the seller present, which can in turn make it uncomfortable for you.

So, just like when agents were showing your home to prospective buyers, it is usually best to allow the buyer and the inspector privacy during the scheduled inspection time.
