DAF recognizes Transgender Day of Visibility

ARLINGTON, Va — The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning Initiatives Team (LIT) of the Department of the Air Force Barrier Analysis Working Group (DAFBAWG) highlighted and observed Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV) on March 31.

TDoV is an international awareness day dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and victories of transgender and gender nonconforming people. In 2021, President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation officially recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility, stating, “We honor and celebrate the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities.”

The LIT is one of seven DAFBAWG teams chartered by the Department of the Air Force since March 2021. As a dedicated focus team, LIT identifies and develops solutions for LGBTQ+ Airmen and Guardians who face disproportionate barriers to success.

“It is important for the LIT to recognize TDoV because hundreds of transgender Airmen and Guardians served under the strain and restriction of two separate bans, while remaining dedicated to our country and missions,” said Master Sgt. Jamie Hash, the LIT Transgender Policies co-lead. “Today is a day to step back and reflect on the obstacles the trans community has overcome, recognize the work left to do, while celebrating all transgender and non-binary DAF personnel who are serving and thriving as their authentic selves.”

The Department of the Air Force remains dedicated to an inclusive environment where all Airmen and Guardians, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can thrive and be enabled to perform at their best to solve complex problem sets of the 21st century operating environment.

Other LIT initiatives include working with other DAFBAWG teams on basing concerns, qualitative data collection and quantitative research, education and awareness, as well as medical policy review and amendment.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Department of the Air Force selected six candidate locations for U.S. Space Force’s Space Training and Readiness Command Headquarters, April 4.

All USSF bases are candidate locations under consideration, which include Los Angeles Air Force Base, California (will be renamed a Space Force Base in the future), Vandenberg SFB, California, Buckley SFB, Colorado, Schriever SFB, Colorado, Peterson SFB, Colorado and Patrick SFB, Florida.

STARCOM, one of three U.S. Space Force field commands, is responsible for the deliberate development, education and training of Space Professionals; development of space warfighting doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures; and the operational test and evaluation of USSF systems.

The Department of the Air Force will begin site surveys in late April or early May 2022 to determine which location is best suited to host STARCOM HQ. The assessment will be based on factors related to mission, infrastructure capacity, community support, environmental considerations and cost.

In the meantime, STARCOM HQ is operating out of a transitional location in Colorado Springs, Colorado, until a permanent location is selected.

STARCOM’s organizational structure includes five space deltas to execute its mission.

Delta 1 – Training – provides initial skills training, specialized warfighter follow-on training, and advanced training events and courses to prepare USSF forces and designated joint and allied partners. Delta 1 is located at Vandenberg SFB. Delta 10 – Doctrine and Wargaming – develops USSF doctrine and tactics, conducts the USSF Lessons Learned Program,

and executes and supports wargames to posture USSF forces and designated joint and allied partners. Patrick SFB is the sole candidate location being considered to host this mission because of its proximity to a Department of Defense modeling and simulation capability with resident space expertise.

Delta 11 – Range and Aggressor – delivers realistic, threat-informed test and training environments through the provision of live, virtual, and constructive range and combat replication capability.

Delta 12 – Test and Evaluation – will prepare USSF forces to prevail in a contested, degraded, and operationally-limited environment through the independent test and evaluation of USSF capabilities and delivery of timely, accurate, and expert information in support of weapon system acquisition, operational acceptance, and readiness decisions.

Schriever SFB and Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, are candidate locations to host Delta 11 and 12. These bases offer existing range infrastructure that supports test, training, and exercise activities within close distance to range and aggressor stakeholders.

Delta 13 – Education – delivers institutional developmental education, develops U.S. Space Force officer accessions, and executes advanced education programs.

Once the USSF establishes the curriculum and structure of Delta 13, it will undergo the Department of the Air Force strategic basing process to determine its permanent location.

Site surveys at the candidate locations for Delta(s) 10, 11 and 12 will wrap up in 2022 to determine which is best suited to host each Delta’s mission. The assessment will be based on factors related to mission, infrastructure capacity, community support, environmental considerations and cost. “The United States Space Force must harness their data, technologies, and processes to generate real-time risk analytics that enhances our ability to minimize risk and guarantee 100% mission success.”

The 5th Space Launch Squadron’s Falcon Flight has been working with four students from George Washington University through a National Security Innovation Network program called ‘Hacking for Defense’ (H4D) to better leverage historical SpaceX launch data to more efficiently and accurately assess mission risk and execute launch vehicle processing.

The Department of Defense sponsors the H4D program, which provides engineering, business, and policy students with opportunities to work on government-sponsored national security problems.

With today’s ever-growing threat in space, U.S. Space Force Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, has made it clear that innovation and partnership are critical to the USSF to protect U.S. security and maintain everyday life for the U.S. The H4D team has been helping Falcon Flight find new innovative ways to accomplish their mission of providing world-class mission assurance of SpaceX Falcon launch vehicles and launch site sfspaceorbital.com

operations.

“Currently our process involves manually reviewing a large amount of data to identify potential issues that may arise or deviations from baseline launch vehicle processing,” said Capt. Tory Robinson, 5th SLS Falcon Flight chief of electrical systems. “Our goal is to streamline this data so that we can more efficiently infer areas of interest, potential risk, and provide mission assurance. This is becoming more important as our launch cadence increases year after year.”

Robinson said the students provide an unbiased look at Falcon Flight’s problem set and offer a fresh set of eyes. The students also come from multidisciplinary backgrounds and have skills that allow them to attack issues from different angles such as science, business analytics, and soft ware development.

“I think it’s important to look at new ways of doing things and innovate in everything we do,” said Robinson. “I also think it is equally important to prioritize initiatives and be willing to pivot or drop initiatives that are not working or providing added value. We took this project on because we knew we had a lot of data available to us and thought we had the tools and know-how to produce something to better allow us to do our jobs. Now we hope to iterate on it, automate it, and let it do work for us.”

Kyle Lyon, a graduate student at George Washington University, is one of the students that have been working with Falcon Flight. He said he chose to get involved with H4D because he wanted to tackle a complex challenge that impacts the lives of millions of people and in this case, the world.

“This project is critical because the Space Force is taking a tremendous leap into becoming a data-centric organization, and our team gets to support them as they enter this new paradigm,” said Lyon. “The payloads on these rockets have real-world implications for people worldwide; whether these space-based assets facilitate communications, navigation, weather tracking, or even surveillance, the Space Force plays an integral role in ensuring these payloads can support and defend the nation.”

An H4D initiative called, “get out of the building”, gave the students a unique opportunity to visit Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Mar. 14 – 16, 2022, to learn about the problem set they are dealing with.

“The CCSFS trip enabled our team to put everything into perspective,” said Lyon. “We were able to put our feet in the Space Force’s shoes and get a better understanding of why this issue is so important.”

Lyon said that meeting with Falcon Flight in person helped the H4D team get a clear view into the space industry and why it is essential commercially and for national security.

Falcon Flight will continue to work with the H4D team virtually to develop new solutions and continue to assure access to space.

“Anytime we can more accurately and efficiently buy down risk, we are more effectively able to assure access to space at a more rapid pace,” said Robinson. “This is important as the Space Force looks to replenish and field an ever-increasing number of space-based capabilities.”

Eastern range supports GOES-T, Starlink launches

PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. — The eastern range at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, supported three launches from March 1 - 9 for SpaceX’s Starlink and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-T missions.

A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket launched from Space Launch Complex 41 March 1 carrying NOAA’s GOES-T

advanced weather satellite into orbit.

A Falcon 9 rocket launched from SLC39A March 3 catapulting SpaceX’s Starlink 4-9 mission into the cosmos. Another Falcon 9 rocket transported Starlink 4-10 into space March 9.

The GOES-T spacecraft will provide NASA and NOAA with continuous imagery and atmospheric measurements of Earth’s Western Hemisphere, lightning detection and mapping, solar imaging and space weather monitoring. Starlink satellites in low orbit enable worldwide high-speed internet access.

HELPFUL INFORMATION ON INSPECTIONS

A home inspection is an important part of the buying process.

Some buyers are willing to forgo the inspection portion of the contract because they think it will make their offer more attractive CSMNG to the seller. This is true but it is a very bad idea for the buyer. There are just too many things that can come up on an inspection that could cost the buyer thousands or maybe even tens of thousands of dollars down the line. It just isn’t worth it. Inspections are for the purpose of knowing ahead of time what may come up or what already has come up. It’s not to nitpick the seller for little things that are just part of home ownership. Many offers that I see on my listings have a clause under additional provisions that states that the buyer will only ask for health and safety items or for major components over a certain amount (i.e. $1500 to $2000).

Everything should work and be safe, but this does not mean that if the hot water heater is 15 years old and working fine, that it is okay to ask for a new hot water heater just because it’s approaching the end of an average length of time before a hot water heater goes out.

If the appliances and systems are older, home warranties can be very helpful to off-set the costs that may come up. Home warranties can be purchased by either the buyer or seller and generally runs for 1 to 2 years. I will get into home warranties next month.

As in any profession, there are good inspectors and there are not so good inspectors. Personally, I recommend using an inspector that is a member of the ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) because they are required to live up to certain standards and to do continuing education classes every year. It’s very similar to using a Realtor instead of just a real estate agent for the same reasons. Home Inspectors are not required to be licensed, but ASHI is the only platform that regulates them. It is kind of scary that basically if you have a pen and a notebook you can be an inspector. Two common things that should be addressed on top of the regular home inspection is radon and a sewer scope. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions on this or any other topic.
