Recognizing forty years of service

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Mr. Jodi Dice, Space Delta 8 - Satellite Communications and Navigational Warfare, 8th Combat Training Squadron information technology specialist, is being recognized for 40 years of civilian service with the U.S. government.

The Length of Service Recognition Program awards years of tenure in the federal service with a certificate and emblem at five or ten year intervals. Dice was recognized and received his gold certificate on March 18, 2022.

“Forty years ago, being an IT Specialist was not something I was pursuing,” explained Dice.

“Working with computers was just

a hobby for me. “The support I received from my wife and kids, as well as working with some amazing and talented people helped steer my career choices.”

Dice went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in information technology management and a master’s degree in computer science. He currently

provides a variety of technical support ranging from determining IT equipment and soft ware requirements and purchasing, to leading projects for application development.

“Mr. Dice’s dedication and drive have been essential to the functionality of all that we do,” said Dice’s supervisor Tyrone Clark, DEL 8, 8th CTS technical director. “I can’t begin to tell you how invaluable his knowledge of programming and information technology has been for the success of this squadron. I sincerely hope he knows that we appreciate his continued efforts and hard work.”

When asked about the secret to his longevity and success, Dice went on to explain, “The bottom line to a long and successful career is truly believing what you do is important.

21st Force Support Squadron lead educational technician

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Jessica Brokar, 21st Force Support Squadron lead educational technician,

was promoted from a preschool teaching position at the main Childhood Development Center on Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, in Nov. 2021. However, that does not mean she has ceased to be the hands-on caregiver and teacher that the Peterson SFB community has come to know over the past decade.

“I’ve been in every classroom this week,” said Brokar on March 24, 2022. “I go wherever they need me.”

Brokar does a little bit of everything, like mentoring new members of the CDC team, working with training curriculum specialists and substituting for teachers who are out of office. Recently, she collaborated on assembling portfolios to maintain the CDC’s National Association for the Education of Young Children and DoD accreditations. By meeting these accreditation standards, Brokar and the rest of the main CDC’s staff give service members confidence that their children will

be safe, letting them maintain focus on the mission.

Though promoted in 2021, Brokar did not take up her new duties until Feb. 2022, as staffing shortages kept her in the classroom. Staffing challenges remain Brokar’s biggest obstacle; a third of the childcare positions across the main and east CDCs and the RP Lee Youth Center are vacant, according to Jacenta Maynor, 21st FSS training and curriculum specialist. By Brokar’s count, lack of staff has kept five classrooms closed in the main CDC alone.

“We would need 41 full-time people to come hire on between all three CDC locations for us to be fully staffed,” said Maynor. “We could go even higher to accommodate part-time staff, staff that are in school and things like that.”

Maynor clarified that it’s not just a Peterson problem; she saw the same issue at her previous work location at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado.

“The childcare field struggled before COVID-19 hit, and it’s struggling even more now,” said Brokar. “It’s like See JESS OF ALL TRADES page 3

By Brokar’s measure, the reasons are at least partially economic. A base CDC depends in part on staffing from civilians who transfer in with their active duty spouses, she explained. The hiring process for civilian government employees happens over a few months, much longer than in the private sector, and few can afford to wait for that additional source of household income.

“Back in the day, when you transferred to a new base, the spouse sometimes didn’t have to work right away. You lived on base housing, so you had time to wait or could just work part time,” she said. “Nowadays, they need two working people. It’s really hard for one parent to be able to stay home, and they’re going to have to sacrifice.”

Maynor said that, while the longer hiring process does allow vital oversight like background checks and verification of immunization records, the CDC is planning a rapid hiring fair in April.

“At a rapid hiring fair, we can do the fingerprints, the background checks, physicals and everything like that the same day,” she said.

“We would be able to bring people on within that next week.”

For now, the things that have helped Brokar succeed in the first 27 years of her career continue to help. She takes time to build relationships with parents, checking sfspaceorbital.com

in daily and showing compassion and understanding. As a grandmother, she has been the parent who wants to sign her kid out and get home to dinner, homework for older kids and maybe a little rest.

“You don’t have to talk to parents every day, but you make sure to make a point to say ‘how was your day?’ or ‘your child did this today,’” she said. “If you make that connection with them, they can go to work feeling good, knowing that their kids are cared for. That makes them feel like family.”

Beyond her many CDC tasks, Brokar will also be taking time to go back to school and earn her Bachelor’s in early childhood education. Long-term, she hopes to transition into being a training curriculum specialist, where she would train new hires, plan training for extant staff and act as a mentor — all things she has started doing in her current position, and all things where her experience and compassion stand out.

“The first thing I tell new hires is to not get overwhelmed, because they get all this information thrown at them” she said. “I always tell them not to give up. We have certain standards we have to meet, but we don’t expect you to memorize them all when they’re thrown at you that first week. It’s going to take time, patience and learning. You just have to take a deep breath and hang in there.”

460th MSG Airman passes SERE selection

— Staff Sgt. Macey Cerny, a Cyber Systems operator from the 460th Mission Support Group Information Technology Flight, recently passed selection for the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training pipeline, with hopes to become one of the very few female SERE specialists in the Air Force.

The SERE selection course is a prerequisite course to the training pipeline to become a SERE specialist. The course covers a wide variety of things from classroom work and building shelters, to leadership skills and time management, and integrative rigorous physical training.

Just getting to the point of being selected has been a long journey for Cerny. She originally had interest in the special warfare career fields when enlisting, but decided on a cyber career for the job prospects on the outside. After a couple years in the Air Force, she felt the need for a major change.

“My best friend at the time handed me an old SERE pamphlet that they once looked into,” said Cerny. “I did a little more research, and I was sold.”

In January, she headed off to the 19-day selection course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. In a class of 52 candidates, she was one of the 12 selected, the only female, along with graduating as the class lead!

“I’m not the first, and I won’t be the last, but graduating as the only female in my group and as the Team Lead was a great accomplishment that I hope inspires other women to join the career field,” said Cerny.

She spent over two years preparing physically and mentally for this journey, tirelessly following an intense workout routine along the way.

“As long as I’ve known Staff Sgt. Cerny, she has had a laser focus on getting accepted into the SERE program,” said Tech. Sgt. Jacob Redman, the 460th MSG ITF flight chief. “She dedicated countless hours getting into peak physical shape to prepare. During this time, she showed unparalleled motivation for her goals while still exhibiting top notch work ethic as NCO in charge of her shop -- truly the model U.S. Air Force NCO! “Her Cadre also praised her amazing drive to accomplish her goals and overcome challenges by telling me, ‘She never gave up and always gave it her all!’” added sfspaceorbital.com

Over the last decade, many restrictions previously placed on women in serving in combat roles and military occupational specialties have been removed.

“We’ve come a long way with the acceptance of women in special operations career fields,” said Cerny. “The barriers still present are more from a physical standpoint.

I did well in training, but there was still a major difference between myself and the other men. I struggled more with rucking since the ruck was half of my body weight, and I’m fairly short with smaller strides.

However, there were no excuses, and I still did it. Women who want to be in these career fields have to be able to meet the standards, which sometimes means we have work twice as hard.”

Cerny is headed to Joint Base LewisMcChord, Washington to begin her pipeline training this April. “I am looking forward to all the new skills I am going to learn,” stated Cerny. “I love the challenge of this career field. I am excited to push myself further than I have before both mentally and physically.

“My main motivation for the training to come is that quitting is not an option,” added Cerny. “I’ve waited two years for this opportunity, and I’m not going to give up on it no matter how difficult it gets.”

When asked what she would say to other women who aspire to join special operations career fields, Cerny said, “If you are on the fence, just go for it. There is nothing wrong with shooting your shot even if it doesn’t pan out. I had a great experience, and I was treated no differently just because I am a woman. We need more women [represented in these careers] in the Air Force, and there are many who are ready.”

Cerny said she plans to see how the training goes, follow her aptitude, and go from there. Some of her responsibilities will include preparing high risk-of-isolation service members for survival situations, as well as to provide direct support to personnel recovery missions through preparation, planning, execution, and adaptation.

“I want to travel as much as possible and maybe get a few deployments,” said Cerny.

“I do plan on making this my career and doing 20 years if not more. My goal is to make Chief [Master Sergeant], and I’m not letting go of that goal anytime soon.”

In Australia, Raymond highlights importance of space, need for allies

ARLINGTON, Va — Emphasizing familiar and proven themes to an international audience, Chief of Space Operations, Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond said during a March 23 speech in Australia that effective and unfettered operation in space is the cornerstone of a nation’s security, its economic vitality and global stability.

“Space has become necessary to our modern way of life… From navigation to precision timing, banking, agriculture, and much more, we all make use of space assets every day, and our reliance on space is only going to increase over time,” Raymond said at the 2022 Air and Space Power Conference held in Australia’s capital, Canberra.

“No matter where you are, your security in some way depends on space and on our ability to access the data collected by our on-orbit assets.”

By travelling to Canberra to deliver his high-profile remarks, Raymond also represented additional truths. The first is that space today is more crowded and dangerous than ever before, as dozens of nations are now active in the domain. Second, space is no longer the “benign” environment it once was, he said, pointing out that space has evolved into a universally acknowledged warfighting domain and potential conflict zone.

“We can no longer take space for granted,” Raymond said, repeating a refrain he has voiced often since the Space Force was born on Dec. 20, 2019 and he was named its highest-ranking military officer.

“A few years ago, I still couldn’t talk about space as a warfighting domain—but the actions of a few nations in space have made this all too clear: we can no longer operate under the illusion that our assets in space— which we rely on heavily for our security as well as for our way of life—will remain safe from potential adversary action.”

That is also the reason that close collaboration with space-faring nations such as Australia is so important, he said. In a significant development, Australia announced on the same day Raymond spoke that it had officially established its own Defence Space Command, a major new part of the Royal Australian Air Force, with a singular focus on the space domain.

The goal, said Australia’s Defense Minister Peter Dutton, is to expand Australia’s capabilities in space and to foster “a larger, collective effort among like-minded countries to ensure a safe, stable and secure space domain.”

Additionally, Dutton said Australia had reached formal agreements with the U.S. to work together on space issues and “a broad range of satellite activities.” Raymond recognized the bonds in his remarks.

“We are partnering with more and more nations on national security space. And we deeply value our partnership with Australia.

collaboration is in the area of space situational awareness,” Raymond said, “ … By standing together, we bolster deterrence, decreasing the chances of aggressive acts both in space and in the other domains. Working together helps us move faster in our urgent goal to replace our current space architecture, which is made up of fragile, exquisite satellites, with a more resilient network—one that can withstand attack and thus eliminate the first-mover advantage of a potential adversary.”

The collaboration with Australia is especially close and mutually beneficial, Raymond said.

As an example, he noted that an important space surveillance telescope began operating in Australia in 2019 after moving from the U.S. six years earlier, and that telescope is expected to go into full operation later this year, with both Australia and the United States operating and maintaining it.

“Thanks to its new location here in Australia, the telescope will have observation over the Southern Celestial Hemisphere, adding a significant data collection capability to our coalition forces,” Raymond said.

The U.S. has good visibility over part of the globe from the north, and Australia has the vantage point from the south. “That makes for a really great team,” he said.

In 2014, Australia and the U.S. joined with Canada and the United Kingdom, formally agreeing to a Combined Space Operations Memorandum of Understanding. That agreement, Raymond said, allows each nation “to get smarter on the current and future space environment, and to enhance our military-to-military relationships.”

Additionally, the U.S. and Australia cooperate in the Advanced Extremely High Frequency system, which is a constellation of communication satellites that provide services to the U.S. and Australia, as well as to Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. “Thanks to AEHF, our combined forces, whether on the ground, at sea, or in the air, can make use of vastly improved global, survivable, and protected communications capabilities,” Raymond said.

As for the people behind the mission, Raymond noted that two Space Force Guardians are currently embedded with the Royal Australian Air Force, while eight Royal Australian Air Force personnel are serving with the Space Force.

“These personnel exchanges allow our people to train together, operate together, and build strong, lasting relationships, which enhance our forces’ ability to conduct real-world missions when needed,” he said.

The driver behind all these actions, efforts and partnerships, and, indeed the creation of the Space Force itself, Raymond said, is clear.

“We need every advantage we can get…

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Military Training Instructors require a combination of grit, wit and professionalism to properly mold new members of the U.S. Air Force. While attending basic military training in October 2007, U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Johnathan Mollison, 21st Comptroller Squadron senior enlisted leader was inspired by these traits, setting him on a path to become an MTI himself.

“I always knew that I wanted to be an MTI,” said Mollison. “I remember when I graduated basic, I tried to beg my MTI at the time to recycle me. I was like ‘we can push another couple of flights together sir, we can do this.’”

The USAF receives trainees from all over the world who come from all different walks and stages in life. While Mollison was going through BMT he was inspired by a trainee in his flight who was homeless prior to their enlistment in the Air Force.

“It was super inspirational seeing someone that came from nothing and then watching them walking down the bomb run, shoulders back, chest out, just inspired and so excited about the future they have,” said Mollison. “I loved seeing that transformation.”

Mollison saw MTIs as the best of what the air force had to offer and admired the way they carried themselves, their professionalism and their expertise in drill and ceremony, he wanted to join their team. After eight years of service in finance, Mollison denied his career reenlistment bonus and began training to become an MTI in June of 2016.

“They said, ‘if you take this job [as an MTI] you’re not eligible to receive your tax free bonus,’” said Mollison. “I didn’t think about it for a second. – I’ve wanted to do this ever since I joined, so I jumped at the opportunity.”

Training to become an MTI begins with the instructor candidate shadowing an experienced MTI for two weeks.

During this time the candidate experiences day-to-day life as an instructor before attending a 35-day formal course.

Afterwards, they are assigned to a training squadron for 90 days of on-the-job training.

“You’re coming from your career fields and you’re supposed to be the best of the best,” said Mollison. “It takes a big person to eat a piece of humble pie and realize that no matter how good I was at my last job, I’ve got a lot of growing and shaping to do for myself. You have to be willing to look yourself in the mirror and think, ‘I’ve got to get better each and every day,’ because all of the trainees in your flight

Mollison had very long days while training to become an MTI, some well over 12 hours long.

“It wasn’t the required amount of time, but I was putting in 13 hour days,” said Mollison. “You would go to school for the day and then afterwards you have to teach yourself how to do drill. – My classmates and I would work together before and after hours, just trying to become masters of a skill we were trying to teach people.”

Once Mollison completed training he spent three years pushing and supervising more than 60 flights across the 321st Training Squadron and the 323rd TRS. During his time as an MTI, Mollison fi lled special roles as a black rope instructor training new MTIs, and as an instructor supervisor looking after and managing the MTIs and trainees in his section.

“Learning to manage multiple issues at one time without losing mission focus, and not letting my members lose mission focus, has exponentially made me a better leader,” said Mollison. “It prepared me to come back to the operational Air Force and reinvigorate that drive and inspiration in people, to help them remember

why they joined the Air Force.”

Being an MTI is so much more than what is perceived from the outside.

Sometimes MTIs have to be that loud scary person that commands respect from dozens of new trainees, other situations call for a more gentle caring approach.

“You often have to build people up when they’re crushed from terrible news, like losing loved ones, or someone that’s struggling with the educational piece of their journey…a lot of people don’t realize that you’re a mentor.”

“Being an MTI has given [Mollison] a better perspective on how to shape young Air Force minds and how introduce them to a new way of life,” Said Senior Airman Christian Tweedie, 21st CPTS, financial operations technician.

Special duty assignments - such as MTIs - help develop and transform our already strong enlisted leaders into the astonishing leaders they need to become in order to lead at the squadron, wing and even the branch level.

Here is a list of Summer Camps offered this summer by the RP Lee Youth Center at Peterson Space Force Base.

Week 1: May 31 – June 3 – SECRET LIFE OF DOGS:

Take a dive into the many different roles dogs play in our community, from making people feel happy in a hospital to taking down bad guys.

Join us to find out about the Secret Life of Dogs.

Cost is $100.

Week 2: June 6-10 – SCI-FI:

Space, the final frontier….or is it! Launch into summer by exploring what is possible with science and asking “What if?” Cost is $140.

Week 2: June 6-10 – SOCCER:

For ages 7 and older. From 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Cost is $100.

Soccer camp is for youth ages 7 and older and will expand the fundamentals of soccer and provide youth with an understanding of the various techniques and skills used in soccer. Participants will receive instruction on targeting accuracy, strategy, tactical analysis, physical fitness, and rules of the game. Camp will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Week 3: June 13-16 – INTO THE WILD - CAMPING 101:

An outdoor camping adventure, young people will not soon forget! Join us for a three day camping trip to Farish Campground. Three full days of hiking, fishing, comradery and fun. (Fri., June 17, is a Family Day; the YC is closed.) Cost is $180.

AQUATICS CENTER

Kids swim 50% off Mondays – Fridays. That means instead of $4 admission fee, kids will pay just $2. On Saturdays, we’ll hand out free family day pass for their family members to use on another day.

Week 4: June 21-24 – SPORTS: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE – AIR RIFLE:

Should you choose to accept this mission, you will learn about air rifling while completing challenges. For ages 9 and older. From 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesday – Friday. Cost is $100.

Air Rifle camp is for youth ages 9 and older, and provides youth an introduction to shooting sports. Activities will include (but are not limited to): Rifle safety, targeting accuracy, tactical analysis, risk management and teamwork while shooting.

Camp will be held Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. (Monday, June 20, Juneteenth, is a federal holiday observed; the YC is closed.)

Swim the Distance is a popular, annual, year-long fitness program featuring a different distance challenge each quarter.

Come to Peterson’s Library starting Mon., April 4, and pick up a packet of Peeps (Yes, the marshmallow kind!) and an instruction sheet.

You will build a diorama.

Remember those from elementary school? A diorama is a scenic representation in which figures (your peeps) and lifelike details are displayed, usually in miniature, so as to blend indistinguishably with a realistic painted background depicting a book using peeps! The one you’ll build will have a literary theme.

A quick internet search of “Literary Peep Dioramas” will get you a plethora of ideas. Be creative! Have fun!

Drop your diorama off at the library to be displayed. Our 21 FSS leadership will judge the dioramas on Friday, April 15, so you must drop off your creation at the library before that date.

Prizes will include a tabletop Galaga arcade game, a Play-Doh fun pack, and library-themed prize packs.

ABOUT OUR FLIGHT SCHOOL

We are an FAA Part 141 Flight and Ground School. One of the many advantages of a Part 141 School is the FAA oversight of all aspects of training and aircraft. Approved Part 141 schools guarantee the student will receive training in accordance with FAA standards. Also, we are affiliated with Utah Valley State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The Rocky Mountain USAF Flight Training Center (aka Aero Club) offers a Private Pilot Ground School about every eight to nine weeks.

We often – not always, but often – get funding that pays for most or all of the Private Pilot Ground School fee ($650) for single active duty members. A basewide blast usually announces these periodic opportunities. Watch your inbox for future announcements.

ABOUT OUR PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL: • Currently we are offering a hybrid course consisting in Jeppesen online modules, and once a weeknight meets with the instructor through ZOOM. • The Private Pilot Ground School is an 8-9 week course, at $650.

• The course is Jeppesen online, and you meet with the instructor, through ZOOM, once a weeknight (6-8 p.m.) to go over materials and ask any questions.

• Completion of this course prepares you to take the FAA Written with the endorsement from the instructor.

• After you pass your FAA Written, you have 2 years to complete the Flying portion and pass the Check ride with an FAA DPE for your Private Pilot License requirements.

• Completion of this course satisfies the FAA minimum requirement for the Ground School portion to get your Private Pilot License.

• Supplies that come with the class include: Jeppesen Online Login, Instructor time, Kneeboard, Plotter, Metal E6B, Logbook, Maneuver Guide, and Course Syllabus.

You can start your flight training before, after or simultaneously with our Ground School; that is totally up to you and instructor availability. It is recommended that when you do start flight training, fly 2-3 times per week for optimal training. That way you are not relearning lessons and adding to your number of flights/hours ($). All flights are pay as you go. Our T41C’s are our trainers. A one-hour flight with the instructor for two hours (one in plane and one for pre and post flight procedures) is about $192.

A home inspection is an important part of the buying process.

Some buyers are willing to forgo the inspection portion of the contract because they think it will make their offer more attractive to the seller. This is true but it is a very bad idea for the buyer. There are just too many things that can come up on an inspection that could cost the buyer thousands or maybe even tens of thousands of dollars down the line. It just isn’t worth it. Inspections are for the purpose of knowing ahead of time what may come up or what already has come up. It’s not to nitpick the seller for little things that are just part of home ownership. Many offers that I see on my listings have a clause under additional provisions that states that the buyer will only ask for health and safety items or for major components over a certain amount (i.e. $1500 to $2000).

Everything should work and be safe, but this does not mean that if the hot water heater is 15 years old and working fine, that it is okay to ask for a new hot water heater just because it’s approaching the end of an average length of time before a hot water heater goes out.

If the appliances and systems are older, home warranties can be very helpful to off-set the costs that may come up. Home warranties can be purchased by either the buyer or seller and generally runs for 1 to 2 years. I will get into home warranties next month.

As in any profession, there are good inspectors and there are not so good inspectors. Personally, I recommend using an inspector that is a member of the ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) because they are required to live up to certain standards and to do continuing education classes every year. It’s very similar to using a Realtor instead of just a real estate agent for the same reasons. Home Inspectors are not required to be licensed, but ASHI is the only platform that regulates them. It is kind of scary that basically if you have a pen and a notebook you can be an inspector. Two common things that should be addressed on top of the regular home inspection is radon and a sewer scope. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions on this or any other topic.
