— An innovative experimental system called the Multiband Assessment of the Communications Environment, or MACE, is being developed by members of Space Delta 3 - Space Electromagnetic Warfare, on Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado.

16th Space Control Squadron members are developing MACE as a rapidly deployable, cost-effective, user friendly spectrum analysis and monitoring squadron innovation tool. A Giggasat FA-150 antenna is used to aid in detecting and identifying electromagnetic interference.

“Due to its small size, MACE has the

ability to significantly cut down on deployment timelines while increasing the ability to access challenging deployment environments,” explained U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. John Idleman, DEL 3, 16th SPCS mission assurance engineer. “MACE can be deployment ready in one day following ops checks, and the entire setup can be transported via a single aircraft pallet.”

The creators of MACE, Tech. Sgt. Vince Couch and Master Sgt. Robert Hicks III, said that inspiration came from various feedback sources and recommendations of 16th SPCS space operators on what they would like to see in a rapidly deployable spectrum analysis suite. The project was sponsored using delta innovation funding.

The 16th SPCS developed MACE as a potential tool to enhance the USSF’s ability to compete in strategic competition with deployable remote operations capabilities.

This will allow for system control from an outside location, thereby reducing the requirement for on-site personnel and allowing spectrum analysis data to be transferred between interconnected MACE systems.

“It is truly a story of grassroots innovation at the tactical-level,” said U.S. Space Force Maj. Kevin Aneshansley, DEL 3, 16th SPCS commander of operations. “Members of the 16th SPCS worked hard to think outside the box to develop a capability which could inform defensive space electromagnetic solutions now and into the future.”

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. -Matheny joined the U.S. Air Force in 2014 as an organic space systems operator, someone who does everything from detecting sea-launched ballistic missiles and tracking satellites to assisting in rocket launches and space flight operations, before transitioning into the U.S. Space Force. During this time, he attended weapons school, something that was previously only for officers, to become a “Patch” or enlisted weapons officer.

Matheny’s unique position has allowed him to find and fi x problems, and it has exposed him to unique opportunities that most enlisted might not get.

“I get to do a little bit of everything. I get to do a little bit of teaching, a little bit of product development, a little bit of integration and really just watching the development of the squadron get better, get smarter, get more lethal, and in some cases, having a direct hand in that change; that’s awesome,” said Matheny.

Matheny has already become a voice for innovation and change in the 4th SCS. “Now that we know what the threat is and how our adversaries are trying to beat us, we have to adapt.

We have to find unique ways to continue this mission set,” said Matheny.

Matheny went on to explain a huge part of their mission at the 4th SCS is participating in more realistic training and integrating with joint partners so when the opportunity to deploy arrives, they are ready.

“I think having the capability of the 4th SCS is a really good arrow in the military’s quiver,” said Matheny.

“Operating from the shadows where we might not

get all the glory is okay because we know at the end of the day we helped enable that victory,” said Matheny. “I think that’s important for everybody to understand.”

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo.— Data collected by the Department of Defense from March through August 2021, indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on rental housing costs in 56 affected markets. To help ease financial burdens, U.S. uniformed service members who incurred increased housing costs were eligible to apply for a temporary increase in basic allowance for housing.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Morgan Saracena, 21st Comptroller Squadron financial services operator, and Airman 1st Class Jane Nicoson, 21st CPTS financial operations technician, discovered a large discrepancy for customers who applied for

the temporary increase.

“I got a phone call from someone asking if their temporary BAH request had processed,” said Nicoson. “When I checked, I noticed that they had no BAH at all.”

Nicoson and Saracena soon discovered the customer’s BAH was unintentionally stopped completely by the defense finance accounting service.

Upon further investigation the Airmen discovered that every Peterson-Schriever Garrison customer who applied for the temporary increase had been affected.

“They immediately routed the issue upward and were able to get over 3,700 records rectified,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Zachary Farmer, 21st CPTS financial operations supervisor. “The two of them always go above and beyond.”

Further research revealed the issue occurred across the entire service, impacting 56 military housing areas across the DoD. The quick action of Nicoson and Saracena resulted in a fix action on January 6, ensuring BAH for impacted personnel was restarted in time to avoid affecting their paychecks on Jan. 15.

“My job effects the daily lives of Airmen and their families,” said Saracena. “Making sure Airmen are getting the correct pay and entitlements allows them and their families to live comfortably and avoid financial hardship.”

Both Airmen were recognized and coined for their efforts by U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, Space Operations Command commander, on February 10, 2022.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Aleha Landry has a passion for changing mental health support and programs. Her efforts over the past 13 years lead to her nomination for inclusion in the Armed Forces Insurance’s 2022 Military Spouse of the Year.

The AFI MSOY award was founded in 2008 to honor military spouses from all branches of service and recognize military spouses’ crucial contributions and unwavering commitment to the military community and our country.

Aleha’s military spouse is U.S. Air Force Capt.

Benjamin Landry an USAF Reserve crew commander with the 19th Space Operations Squadron located at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado.

After Capt. Landry returned from deployment, mental health and medications became a part of the family’s life and journey. Months later, Capt.

Landry had to be hospitalized with subsequent weeks of frequent mental health visits, battling severe depression and intrusive thoughts of self-harm.

“I saw the cracks he and our family fell through during the process of him seeking treatment,” said

Aleha. “I knew we weren’t alone in this, and I had to do something.”

Noticing shortcomings and inefficiencies, Aleha has committed her time and energy to championing improvements in mental health care and support amidst the military, including writing 15 articles regarding the important, ongoing issue.

“Aleha Landry has been an ardent advocate in gaining access to mental health programs for military members and their families,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Michael Schriever, 2nd Space Operations Squadron commander.

“Aleha’s husband is an amazing crew commander with the 19th Space Operations Squadron and has sat several crew rotations executing the 2nd SOPS mission.

Capt. Landry’s advocacy for mental health — and Aleha’s for him and our 200-plus Team BlackJack members of 2nd and 19th SOPS — was critical in the most stressful period in GPS operations history. Our Pathfinder’s are better off because of Aleha Landry’s efforts. I know we are on the right track engaging in these hard conversa-

tions, looking to connect and help our members in need, and eliminating the stigma associated with this topic.”

To fix the cracks, Landry continues to interface with many USAF leaders and beyond.

When asked how she feels about being a MSOY candidate for 2022, Landry said: “It caught me by surprise. I work a lot behind the scenes, with contacting offices and working with military members and leadership. After my initial shock, I was very honored because my peers in my cohort are all amazing and fantastic. The nature of this program, by bringing us all together, will only hasten change — because we are all working on something. We’re all trying to bring light into areas where change needs to happen. When all of our voices can come together, change is going happen faster. I’m very honored to be a part of it.”

When asked for what inspires her to continue being a voice for mental health in the military, Landry said: “My grandmother was an Air Force spouse in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, and she has served as an inspiration. Having talked with her, some of the same mentalities still remain 60 years later. It’s time for change, and I’m excited to be a part of the conversation.”

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Department of the Air Force senior leaders hosted a virtual event Feb. 9 to celebrate the contributions of Black American Airmen and Guardians throughout the history of the department.

Speakers included Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, and Department of the Air Force Office of Diversity and Inclusion director, Marianne Malizia.

“This is an opportunity for us to celebrate (and) also an opportunity to dedicate ourselves to continue a journey that America as a whole … has been on for a long time,” said Kendall. “Too much of the Black experience in America has been about inequality and injustice, but that journey has also been characterized by courage, persistence in the face of great odds, [and] intellectual and artistic brilliance … things that we can all, as Americans, be proud of and celebrate.”

During this event, Airmen, Guardians and DAF civilians shared their personal stories of overcoming adversity and also spoke about how the department works to provide a culture and lifestyle that enables people from all backgrounds to succeed.

“I want to do things that are going to make a difference, so that’s my goal here with the Secretary, to make a difference for all our Airmen, no matter their background,” said Brown. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, your opportunity and the opportunity for all of us is now. It takes determination and preparation for all of us to have an impact and change history, so when the opportunity knocks, you want to be fully ready.”

American Airmen and Guardians. It was also an opportunity to reflect on adversity and other disparities that exist within the Air and Space Force and what is being done to address them.

“We have a saying that ‘space is hard,’ that space demands the best our nation has to offer and from the very beginning Black Americans have been absolutely critical to our nation’s success as a spacefaring nation,” said Raymond. “The Space Force is committed to building a diverse and inclusive service. It’s the right thing to do, but it’s also what the space mission demands. We need the best and the brightest to meet challenges and protect our nation’s security.”

Concluding the event, there was a special presentation commemorating trailblazers, senior leaders, and other influential individuals who recently passed away.

This offered attendees a chance celebrate those who have served as role models and influenced Airmen, Guardians, and the Department of the Air Force for years to come.

“I can promise you as your Secretary, that I and the rest of our leadership will be laser focused on making sure our department is more inclusive for all races, genders and ethnicities,” said Kendall.

“Undersecretary [of the Air Force Gina Ortiz] Jones, [General] Brown, [General] Raymond, and all the leadership team will strive to ensure our department-wide policies address the disparities we recognized in the disparity reports that we published.

I hope that by recognizing, respecting, and understanding the different perspectives and experience that each Airman and Guardian brings to the fight, we will be able to find new and better solutions to the complex challenges we face as the 21st Century warfighting force.”

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif — The Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous Earth Orbit - Satellite #5 (SBIRS GEO-5) was formally transferred from Space Systems Command (SSC) to Space Operations Command (SpOC) on Feb. 4, 2022 during an Operational Acceptance ceremony.

“The addition of the SBIRS GEO-5 satellite will ensure that the United States will continue to deliver critical missile warning, missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness data to the warfighter for years to come, maintaining a key strategic advantage that only our space assets can provide,” said Mr. Cordell DeLaPena, Jr., Program Executive Officer for Space Production at SSC. Space Delta 4’s 2nd Space Warning Squadron at Buckley Space Force Base, Colorado, is now operating the satellite and all systems are performing nominally. SBIRS GEO-5 is the fifth of six SBIRS GEO satellites delivered by Space Systems Command and Lockheed Martin with SBIRS GEO-6 currently manifested for a summer 2022 launch.

SBIRS GEO-5, built by Lockheed Martin, launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on May 18, 2021. This marked the first military satellite launch of Lockheed Martin’s LM2100 Combat Bus. SBIRS GEO-5’s LM2100 Combat Bus is an enhanced space vehicle that provides even greater resiliency and cyber-hardening against growing threats, improved spacecraft power, propulsion and electronics, common components and procedures to streamline manufacturing, as well as flexible design that reduces the cost to incorporate future, modernized sensor suites.

Upon separation from the Atlas V’s Centaur upper-stage, satellite operations personnel began a series of planned

transfer orbit maneuvers to place the satellite into its final orbit. SBIRS GEO-5 reached its intended orbit and began checkout activities of the satellite’s light shade, solar arrays, and antennas. Once SSC and Lockheed Martin completed checkout activities, the teams tuned and calibrated the payload sensors and readied them for warfighter use.

“SBIRS GEO-5 exceeded performance expectations during on-orbit testing,” said Michael Corriea, Lockheed Martin OPIR Mission Area Vice President. “With the declaration of operational acceptance less than a year from launch, the LM 2100-built GEO-5 completed all on-orbit testing and analysis 40 percent faster compared to GEO-1 through GEO-4 average testing times.”

Due to the extensive process of ensuring the mission payload’s readiness for warfighter use, various teams across the industry were crucial in the months leading up to operational acceptance.

“The team has done an outstanding job in delivering to the warfighter the critical capabilities while always pushing to improve the testing process and get these sensors operational,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Laughton, Materiel Leader for SBIRS GEO-5/6 Production. “This milestone is a huge accomplishment and would not be possible without our industry partners, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, and our military teammates at SSC, Space Delta 4 and 2 SWS working diligently to get SBIRS GEO-5 into the hands of the warfighter.”

Since replacing the Defense Support Program’s 45-yearold missile warning and missile detection satellites with SBIRS GEO-5 and other on-orbit GEO and Highly Elliptical Orbit sensors, the U.S. Department of Defense has seen a surge in adversarial threats, including missile launches from China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

On Jan. 7, 2020, the SBIRS constellation detected the launch of over one dozen ballistic missiles by Iran as retaliation for the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani. Space Force operators at 2 SWS successfully detected the launch and provided early warning for personnel at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq to seek shelter. As a result, United States and coalition troops sustained zero casualties and only minor infrastructure damage.

SSC is the U.S. Space Force field command responsible for rapidly identifying, prototyping and fielding resilient space capabilities for joint warfighters. SSC delivers sustainable joint space warfighting capabilities to defend the nation and its allies while disrupting adversaries in the contested space domain. SSC mission areas include launch acquisition and operations; space domain awareness; positioning, navigation and timing; missile warning; satellite communication; and cross-mission ground, command and control and data.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo.

— During extreme cold weather events in Colorado Springs, all Air Force Specialty Codes within the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron contribute to snow plow duty as part of the Snow and Ice Control Program.

The SIC Program ensures clear roads to provide safe transit for base personnel, ensuring critical installation and national defense functions continue. This is especially important during inclement weather conditions.

Each snow plow shift is 12 hours or until road conditions are returned back to safe operational status. Airmen are scheduled to be on standby for a one-month period, either nights or days, with an extra person on call to cover a shift in case the primary has constraints.

“We train 30-50 personnel yearly on vehicle operations and snow removal procedures,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Shaun Hill, 21st CES pavements and construction equipment noncommissioned officer in charge. “We also use our engineering assistants and recourse and optimization personnel to be snow controllers. Their job is to track all assigned tasks and priorities during a snow event. We will usually have six augmentees and three or four 3E2X1s, Dirt Boys, on each shift.”

SAFETY 411 Stopping on snow and ice without skidding requires extra time and distance. If you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it. If you don’t have anti-lock brakes, gently pump the pedal. Either way, give yourself plenty of room to stop. Never slam on the brakes.

When you’re driving on snow, ice, or wet roads, accelerate gradually and avoid abrupt steering maneuvers. Merge slowly, since sudden movements can cause your vehicle to slide. Look farther ahead in traffic that you normally do. Actions by other vehicles will alert you to problems more quickly, and give you that split-second of extra time to react safely.

SCHRIEVER SFB INSTALLATION DEVELOPMENT PLAN ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Who: The Schriever SFB Environmental office invites comments from the base and local communities on the Draft 2022 SSFB Installation Development Plan Environmental Assessment (EA) and draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI).

What: This programmatic EA evaluates potential environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic impacts associated with twenty-four projects prioritized for execution between 2022 and 2032 in the SSFB Installation Development Plan, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of

PSFB ANNOUNCEMENTS UBER AND LYFT ACCESS Who: Uber and Lyft can transport riders on and off Peterson Space Force Base What: A recent policy change allows Uber and Lyft drivers to enter PSFB when performing driver services, but they must have proper DoD credentials.

The driver and passengers must all present DoD credentials to gain base access. Riders are not au-

thorized to vouch for the driver or use the “Trusted Traveler” status if a driver is not a DoD credential holder. If the driver does not have credentials to enter the installation, the passenger must be picked up and dropped off at the Visitor Control Center (Bldg. 1334).

UPDATED PEDIATRIC COVID-19 VACCINE GUIDANCE At this time, the 21st Medical Group is unable to provide COVID-19 boosters for dependents under the age of 18. Please use an off-base facility with Tricare support until booster shots can be offered back on the installation.

COVID-19 VACCINE APPOINTMENTS NEW: Pfizer Biontech COVID-19 shots are only being administered to active duty members, at this time.

What: All COVID-19 shots are available by appointment.

Who: Any individual who has completed a

COVID-19 series and appropriate waiting time may receive a booster.

They have completed a COVID-19 vaccine series, i.e. two doses of Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech; or one dose of the Janssen J&J vaccine.
