Exceptional Peterson kid competes for Military Child of the Year

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — A resident of Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, was named a semi-finalist for Military Child of the Year on Jan. 5, 2022. Collin Williams, the 15-year-old son of U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Robert Williams, North American Aerospace Defense Command U.S. Northern Command Joint Operations Center security manager, is one of 15 children who will now be in contention for the title of Military Child of the Year for the Air Force.

The award, organized by nonprofit organization Operation Homefront, spotlights eight military children from around the country each year: one from each branch of the military, plus a separate, interbranch Military Child of the Year Innovation Award. If Collin is selected as the Air Force’s Military Child of the Year, he will receive several awards from the sponsoring organization, including a $10,000 stipend and a laptop.

“It seems like a pretty amazing opportunity. I care mostly about the stipend that comes with it, because that’ll help pay for college,” said Collin. “But I’m also excited because I was nominated for an award, and I can’t really remember being nominated for something this big before, let alone being a semi-finalist.”

Collin’s parents nominated their son for the award after seeing an e-mail from the sponsor organization. They had plenty of material to work with, as Collin volunteers a lot of time and energy for charitable causes. He and Williams volunteer at a local soup kitchen, where he enjoys helping others while also learning cooking skills from his dad.

He’s also a member of the youth leadership council for the Colorado branch of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with whom he helps plan fundraising and awareness campaigns.

“We’re also learning things like entrepreneurship and how to run a nonprofit,” Collin said. “I am a Wish kid myself.

I was taken to Orlando, Florida, where we went to Disney World and Universal Studios. When I heard about the YLC, I thought about the opportunity I was given and how cool it would be, for lack of a better term, to pay it forward.”

ening, both will likely affect him for the rest of his life.

He and his family have had a lot of support along the way, thanks in part to the DoD-run Exceptional Family Member Program — he’s one of three program members in his family.

EFMP helped connect the Williamses with the resources they needed to not just survive but thrive.

“We provide events and workshops for not only children in the EFMP, but adults, too,” Jackie Wickham, 21st Force Support Squadron EFMP-Family Support coordinator, said.

“Topics can vary depending on what a family’s needs are.

Quarterly events can be something like adapted martial arts, therapeutic ice skating, equine therapy or anything that may be of interest to families with special needs.”

“The Airman and Family Readiness Center has great resources overall, and Jackie has scheduled so many amazing extracurricular activities that my kids have continued past the camps they attend through EFMP,” said Danielle Williams, Collin’s mom.

With all that said, the Williamses make it clear that Collin’s autism is not a disability. He’s in specialized schooling programs — not because he’s behind, but to meet the needs of his voracious intellectual appetite. At the end of the

2021-22 school year, Collin will complete his diploma and, thanks to concurrent enrollment in Pikes Peak Community College, his associate degree. He’s been a President’s List recipient for three semesters running, and he’s been learning how to code and design computer programs since age seven. While he has yet to confirm where he’ll continue his education — his dream school is Massachusetts Institute of Technology — he intends to earn a degree in computer science.

“I want to use computer science to try to advance mankind, whatever that means,” Collin said. “One of the things I’m currently considering is NASA, to help with robotics and rovers, but also expanding our knowledge of space. I’m also mulling over the idea of doing something environmental with my computer science passion, like helping clean up the environment.”

Beyond his charitable work and academic achievements, Collin is close with his family. He and his younger brother, Ian, are best friends; they’re also both EFMP members and former Wish kids, and they share a love of archery. As noted above, Collin learns about cooking from his father, and he’s also a capable baker, having memorized a gluten-free cookie recipe to make for his mom, Danielle.

“I’m proud of being a military kid,” Collin said. “I’ve lived on a military base my entire life, and the things I’ve learned, the experiences I’ve had getting to see a good chunk of America, has taught me a lot — not only education, but about myself and others.”

When asked what advice he would give to other military children, he said that while it’s been important for him to hold onto his passions and interests, it’s also important to make each new duty station feel like home.

“Try to put a little bit of yourself into your community, but also bring a little bit of your community into yourself,” he said. “That’s what I’ve done every time we’ve had to move.

I try to explore. I try to get myself out there and integrate a bit of the culture into my own lifestyle.”

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colorado — Space Operations Command has accepted Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous satellite 5 as operationally capable and has presented it to United States Space Command for operational use.

SBIRS GEO-5 launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, on May 18, 2021. Since launch, experts from the satellite’s builder Lockheed-Martin, contract manager Space Systems Command and Space Operations Command’s Delta 4 have been completing checks to ensure the nation’s newest and most-capable missile warning satellite is ready to be added to the United States’ missile warning and missile defense architecture.

craft will improve our nation’s missile warning, missile defense, battlespace awareness and technical intelligence capabilities,” said Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, Commander of Space Operations Command. “The security of our nation, our allies and our fielded forces depends on SBIRS and our Guardians every day.”

SBIRS is operated by the 2nd Space Warning Squadron, Buckley Space Force Base, Colorado.

SBIRS GEO-6, the final planned satellite in the SBIRS GEO series, will launch later this year. The first, SBIRS GEO-1, launched in 2011.

SBIRS on-board sensors are designed to detect infrared signals, such as those given off by a missile or space launch. SBIRS ground crews monitor information gathered by SBIRS and other missile warning satellites and transmit warnings to strategic and theater command centers.

NASA Astronaut Hopkins visits Peterson and Schriever

— U.S. Space Force Col. Mike Hopkins, NASA astronaut, treated personnel at Peterson Space Force Base and Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, to an out-ofthis-world visit, Jan. 25-26, 2022.

Hopkins, the first astronaut to transfer into the Space Force, spent both days connecting with Airmen, Guardians and civilians, sharing stories about his two missions to the International Space Station. He also discussed life in space, his career in the military and at NASA, and did a Q&A with audiences at both bases.

The first thing Hopkins wants people to know, is that there is no typical day in the life of an astronaut.

“An astronaut’s responsibilities and areas that they need to have skills in is wide ranging,” said Hopkins. “We have to know all about the International Space Station, all the systems on board, we have to know about the science [experiments] and how you execute them, how to operate a robotic arm, be able to go out and do spacewalks, speak Russian, and fly the vehicle that’s taking you to and from the space station.”

According to Hopkins, all of that adds up to very long working days over years leading up to, during, and after a mission to space.

However, one reward that comes from the long hours and preparation is the sense of “overview” that astronauts often experience

didn’t happen right away during his first trip to the ISS in 2013, adding, “when I first got into space, I didn’t have that kind of experience and part of the reason for that is it was a weird feeling. When I first got into microgravity, I felt like I was falling.”

Rather, the experience of overview developed over the course of his months-long missions in space.

“Fortunately, I was up there for 330-plus

looking down on Earth from orbit.

“That’s this idea that people have talked about where you look out the window when you first get into space, and you see the Earth in all its glory. You see this very thin atmosphere that’s keeping us alive, you don’t see borders and you realize how connected we all are, and so they often talk about the clarity that comes from that,” he explained.

However, Hopkins said that experience

days, and so I had opportunities to spend some time looking down and contemplating on that. And for me, when I think about the overview effect, and that kind of experience, I have a little bit different take on it,” he said.

“I just know it looks beautiful from up here, and so rather than looking down at the Earth and feeling like I had all these answers, it made me realize I had nothing but questions and that I really don’t understand as much as I think I do about the world that we live in.”

Hopkins recently served as SpaceX Crew1 commander and the ISS flight engineer for Expedition 64 from Nov. 15, 2020, to May 2, 2021. While in orbit, he contributed to scientific investigations, technology demonstrations, growing crops and taking hundreds of pictures of Earth.

During that mission, Hopkins became the first U.S. Space Force astronaut when he voluntarily transferred from the U.S. Air Force while in orbit on the ISS, Dec. 18, 2020. According to Hopkins, this follows a tradition of each branch of the military sending officers to serve as astronauts at NASA, which now includes two Guardians.

“As a military officer, you definitely have an experience of working in an operational environment that can be challenging at times, and so being able to perform in those kind of environments, I think, is something that the military often brings to the table,” he said.

1st SOPS, under DEL 9, designs and executes tactical mission plans with the GSSAP formation that satisfy the taskings given to them by U.S. Space Command and Joint Task Force — Space Defense. The effects from each orbital engagement help support DEL 9’s protect and defend mission.

“We’ve been waiting patiently for vehicles 5 and 6 to join the current fleet,” said U.S. Space Force Capt. Andrew Marin, DEL 9 Commanders Action Group chief. “With a larger fleet of GSSAP vehicles, we’ll better integrate synchronized operations across find, fix, track, target, engage, assess while also increasing our understanding of activity in the geostationary belt.”

The first GSSAP satellites were launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, July 28, 2014, and GSSAP vehicles 5 and 6 will add to the USSF space arsenal for the protect and defend mission.

circle,” but also accepting the challenges of building and representing a new military service.

“Well, it is certainly an honor. It doesn’t come without its pressure, though, right?” Hopkins quipped. “Because there’s so much of the Space Force right now that we’re still trying to figure out in terms of the culture and some of the models, the visions, the mission; all of that is, in many cases, still kind of being worked out, and so one of the nice things about being that representative to NASA is helping with that understanding of what the Space Force mission is.”

According to Hopkins, another facet of being a representative of the service is distinguishing NASA’s mission from the Space Force mission.

“When it comes to space in general, I think a lot of people originally, or maybe still think that NASA is part of the Space Force, or Space Force is part of NASA,” he explained. “NASA has that civilian mission of exploring space, whether it be with humans or robotically, and understanding the Earth, and the Space Force has the mission of making sure NASA can do theirs.”

While NASA and the Space Force have

different missions, they operate in the same domain- space. Hopkins explained some of the ways NASA depends on the capabilities provided by Guardians back on Earth.

“One of the big ways that the Guardians help is just in the tracking of all the objects that are up there [in orbit],” he said. “Those objects are becoming more and more an issue for the International Space Station.”

He said they also depend on broader military support during launches and landings, adding, “there are a lot of military resources that are standing by if there’s something that goes wrong… [resources] that are there and ready to go if we should have to abort and we end up landing in the ocean.”

Ultimately, Hopkins said he wants to share his experiences with others and possibly inspire the next generation of astronauts.

“It means a lot because I started out in the Air Force, so this is this is my community.

It’s nice to be able to share the experience of spaceflight and to be able to maybe give folks a little bit of understanding of the human side,” he explained. “I can’t wait for the day where I’m sitting in the audience and getting to listen to maybe a future Guardian that that has just gone to the Moon.”

Q&A: Meet STARCOM’s first historian Task Force leader. General Bratton would become first STARCOM commander in August 2021.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Amongst the very small number of Guardians composing Space Training and Readiness Command’s special staff sits the one person charged with documenting all of STARCOM’s history.

Dr. Rick Sturdevant recently joined STARCOM as the Command Historian, charged with continuing the legacy of space training and readiness.

Dr. Sturdevant earned his first degree in 1969 — a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Northern Iowa, graduating summa cum laude. He received a Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974 after successfully researching, writing, and defending a thesis titled “Girding for War: Conditions Underlying the Response of Iowa Counties to Troop Calls, 1861-1862.” The University of California, Santa Barbara, awarded him the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1982 after he submitted a dissertation titled “Quest for Eden: George Washington’s Frontier Land Interests.”

A Vietnam-era veteran, Dr. Sturdevant served as a surgical specialist in the United States Army Medical Corps at Fort Carson, Colorado, during 1971-1973. He was the honor graduate from both the “field medic” and “surgical specialist” schools at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, as well as the distinguished graduate from “Noncommissioned Officer Leadership School” at Fort Carson.

Over the course of his 50-year dedication to history Dr. Sturdevant completed more than 100 articles and essays, contributed to 115 book reviews, served as a subject matter expert in 8 film documentaries and numerous conference speaking engagements and guest lecturer.

We had the distinct opportunity to speak with Dr. Sturdevant about his new role and importance of history in how we approach the present, and the future.

Tell us a little bit about the history of STARCOM?

The historical roots of STARCOM are traceable back to Task Force Tango, a planning group formed at Air Force Space Command headquarters in FebruaryMarch 2019 to support Major General Clint Crosier’s Space Force Planning Task Force in the Pentagon. Sturdevant entered civilian service with Air Force Space Command, the immediate predecessor of the U.S. Space Force, in the 1980s.

Workshop at Peterson AFB, Colo., in January 2020 included discussions regarding the creation of a STARCOM. Participants explored “go fast” and “go slow” options for creating STARCOM per direction from the Chief of Space Operations (CSO), Gen John W. “Jay” Raymond, but briefings in late June 2019 already had contained a STARCOM mission description that essentially mirrored the command’s mission when the command activated at Peterson Space Force Base on 23 August 2021.

Of course, substantial additional work to establish and activate STARCOM occurred during 2020 and the first half 2021. In July 2020, a provisional STAR Delta, known as STAR Delta (P) and led by Colonel Pete Flores, stood up under Space Operations Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, to provide oversight of Space Force education, training, and operational test and evaluation units pending STARCOM activation. STAR Delta (P) focused on mission. Following dissolution of Task Force Tango, a STARCOM Task Force also formed to focus on organizational issues, with Col Bill Havens temporarily leading it from mid-November 2020 until 1 February 2021, when Brigadier General Shawn Bratton became

Military historians are often called providers of “corporate memory.” The philosopher George Santayana observed, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” That statement has been paraphrased in many ways, such as “Those who neglect history are doomed to repeat it” or “Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.” Keep in mind, history is more than simply names and dates; it is, literally, the story of the past events, explained in a way that enhances our understanding of the present and our possible futures. Without keepers of the history, it would be infinitely more difficult for military members to understand their profession and cultivate the skills needed for advancement in rank. Understanding strategic or tactical successes and failures from past military events can inform current planning and decision making. If historians didn’t exist in the military, it would be infinitely more difficult to maintain an extensive data base from which to draw, in timely fashion, detailed analytical material about past successes or failures that might inform understanding of current situations. If historians did not exist within the military, its members would likely have a much weaker sense of their place or role in the present, because a fertile understanding of present circumstances depends on a rich knowledge of the past. Appreciating the vector from past to present, is necessary for plotting the most probable arc toward the future.

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE — Space Systems Command is supporting the analysis of recent global events including the Russian Anti-Satellite this past November and the Chinese satellite that towed a defunct navigation satellite out of geostationary orbit last week. Col. “Rhet” Turnbull, director of SSC’s Cross Mission Ground and Communications Enterprise, shares why and how SSC’s advancements in Space Domain Awareness are vital to national defense from adversarial threats.

Turnbull explains. “If we don’t stay ahead, we risk having our daily way of life radically disrupted.”

“SSC is operating within a great force culture change — adapting to counter adversarial threats, delivering more resilient capabilities, and maximizing opportunities to utilize the incredible innovation that’s coming out from our commercial in-

dustry today. And we’re doing this through a collaborative approach with each other and with all our partners.”

SSC works closely with the operational community to deliver SDA capabilities that operators require.

For example, SSC is tracking nearly 35,000 objects in Lower Earth Orbit, a 22 percent increase from just two years ago.

From a data perspective, this is a monumental task. Observation Association takes radar information from ground sensors and correlates it to known resident space objects, associating 400,000+ observations a day across a 30,000-object search field.

A recent Value Assessment from Space Operations Command states the positive impacts that SSC’s command and control Space C2-delivered capabilities have had on increasing space warfighters’ productivity and improving mission performance. In less than 3 years, SSC’s Space C2 program has delivered 12 operationally-accepted capabilities that are currently supporting warfighter operations.

WASHINGTON — Maintaining the U.S. Space Force’s strategic advantage in the space domain requires cutting-edge technology, but it also takes a workforce that can effectively and efficiently leverage that technology. To develop its force for the future, the Space Force is working with industry to provide educational resources in topics like Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Development, Product Management, Design, Cybersecurity and Cloud Architecture through its Digital University.

“Today’s Guardians are pioneers of our nation’s Space Force; every one of us must help forge a Digital Service that welcomes continuous learning, collaboration, boldness, diversity and adaptiveness,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond. “The majority of us experience space through data. We must be able to harness and expertly exploit that data to ensure the domain remains secure, stable and accessible.”

Digital University provides a wealth of knowledge that will give Guardians access to the courses necessary to hone their digital fluency.

What is the most historically significant event you’ve been able to document as a space historian?

As the Space Communications Division historian during Desert Shield/Desert Storm, I collected documents — including the original, handwritten drawing — of how engineers in Building 1 at Peterson AFB designed and implemented the Scud Alert Network. That network, which involved satellite, microwave, and hardwired secure communication pathways and red phones continually off the hook, allowed personnel in Colorado Springs to transmit to US and Coalition forces in theater

Thousands of Guardians have participated in and provided positive feedback on the 5-course Force Multiplier program meant to establish a baseline of digital fluency across the service. This particular program consists of the following courses; Digital Product Development, Digital Engineering, Modern Infrastructure, Cyber Security in the DoD, and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

“This is exactly what I wanted,” said Capt. Blake Abrecht, Space Operations Command space control engineer. “I’ve taken lots of programming classes, but this was at the exact level I needed.”

Space Force leadership is looking to incentivize Guardians who pursue upskilling opportunities through Digital University, and are also working toward adding the Supra Coder Software Development Immersive to the university’s learning path.

This gave friendly forces time to take protective measures. Buying a home in 2022 should be a little easier than in 2021. The inventory is still very low but there are fewer competing offers now and as Spring approaches, there will be more homes going on the market too.

Home prices are expected to keep rising, but not at the 18% we saw in 2021. The expectation is 10% in 2022, but that could change at any time.

Interest rates are also rising slightly, due to inflation, but they should rise slowly and not in any large jump at one time. They are anticipated to raise 4 or 5 times by the end of the year.

You do need to have a plan in place, which includes having a solid lender approval letter (or at a minimum a pre-qualification letter). Using an internet or out of state lender (even lenders like USAA or Rocket Mortgage) will put you at a disadvantage when you are in a competing position. The Realtor you choose to work with, their reputation with other Realtors, and how experienced they are is extremely important. There 100 different little unexpected things can come up when you are trying to buy a home. You want a Realtor that is available to show you a particular house on short notice and knows the market inside and out so they can guide you along the way.

You must also be in a position to move quickly if you see a home that really looks like it could be “the one”. If you wait more than a day or two, it could be gone. Some listing agents advertise in the MLS that they will accept offers thru a particular date (usually 5 or 6 days from the time it goes on the market) while others will present offers as they come in. And sometimes, even though they say they are taking offers until a certain date, they may just jump on one before then, so if you are interested, go ahead and write that offer up and get it to the listing agent.
