Family fun at Winter Wonderland

By Airman 1st Class Brooke Wise, Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st and 50th Force Support Squadrons collaborated to create Winter Wonderland, a Peterson-Schriever Garrison holiday event for service members and their families at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, Dec. 18, 2021.

“The event was designed to be a chance for families, friends and fellow co-workers to start the holiday break with fun activities for kids, holiday music, door prizes and a chance to give Santa your wish list,” explained U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Mindi Hudson, 21st FSS career assistance advisor.

Attendees walked along a path that led them through six holiday-themed workshops. Holiday helpers guided attendees through each station, where they enjoyed different crafts and holiday snacks. Both adults and children received multiple prizes and holiday give-aways throughout the event.

“The goal was to bring everyone together as a garrison by creating an environment filled with holiday spirit,” said USAF Capt. Matthew Baldwin, 21st FSS military personnel flight commander.

The free event was open to all service members and their families. To align with COVID-19 prevention measures, the event was limited to 260 attendees by advanced registration.

DAF authorizes pass for COVID booster

Statement by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on COVID status

WASHINGTON — Airmen and Guardians who are eligible and elect to receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine are authorized a four-hour pass, or up to four-hours administrative leave for Department of the Air Force civilians.

“We strongly encourage all Airmen, Guardians, and DAF federal employees to receive a booster. As COVID-19 cases continue to surge, we need to do everything possible to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities — that means getting a booster,” said Under Secretary of the Air Force Gina Ortiz Jones. “The four-hour authorized time may be applied retroactively for those who have already received the booster.”

The Office of Personnel Management authorizes federal employees up to four hours of administrative leave to receive a vaccine booster shot, which is designed to cover “the time it takes to travel to the vaccination site, receive the vaccination dose, and return to work.”

If federal employees take less than four hours to receive their booster shot, they should be granted only that amount of time in administrative leave, and employees cannot receive leave or overtime if they get their booster shot outside of their normal work hours.

Federal employees are also authorized up to four hours of administrative leave to accompany their family members who are receiving any dose of a COVID-19 vaccination.

Federal employees should obtain advance approval from their supervisor before being permitted to use administrative leave for COVID-19 vaccination purposes.

I tested positive this morning for COVID-19.

I requested the test today after exhibiting symptoms while at home on leave.

My symptoms are mild, and I am following my physician’s directions.

In keeping with those directions, and in accordance with CDC guidelines, I will quarantine myself at home for the next five days.

Stemming the spread of this virus, safeguarding our workforce and ensuring my own speedy and safe recovery remain my priorities.

To the degree possible, I plan to attend virtually this coming week those key meetings and discussions required to inform my situational awareness and decision making. I will retain all authorities. Deputy Secretary Hicks will represent me as appropriate in other matters.

I have informed my leadership team of my positive test result, as well as the President. My staff has begun contact tracing and testing of all those with whom I have come into contact over the last week.

My last meeting with President Biden occurred on Tuesday, December 21st, more than a week before I began to experience symptoms.

I tested negative that very morning. I have not been in the Pentagon since Thursday, where I met briefly — and only — with a few members of my staff. We were properly masked and socially distanced throughout.

As my doctor made clear to me, my fully vaccinated status — and the booster I received in early October — have rendered the infection much more mild than it would otherwise have been. And I am grateful for that.

The vaccines work and will remain a military medical requirement for our workforce. I continue to encourage everyone eligible for a booster shot to get one. This remains a readiness issue.

Warm greetings from Schriever SFB

SCHIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo.

— During the early morning hours of Dec. 17, Airmen, Guardians and Department of Defense civilians were warmly greeted with holiday treats, and words of encouragement and strength as they reported for work at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado.

“With the gate greetings, we want to remind our people that they are important, that they matter, and that we see them,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jessica Ditson, Peterson-Schriever Garrison violence prevention integrator.

Throughout the year, Ditson has organized and participated in a morning gate greetings — a candygram delivery — before various holidays. Previously, she joined Airmen, Guardians and members of the United Service Organizations to hand out Halloween chocolates and candies while holding signs with messages of encouragement at the installation Enoch Gate. Ditson mentioned how her appearances at gate greetings has eased introductions and lead to substantial conversations.

“Connectedness is big. Letting Airmen and Guardians know that they belong and that they matter is important,” said Ditson.

“We want these gate greetings to be a catalyst, encouraging our people to connect. It also gives us a chance to meet our Defenders

— but no matter which, I’ll invariably hear from someone admitting that the candygram said what they needed to hear that day,” said Ditson. “It’s just a small way to connect, and a lot of small things can add up to big connections.”

Whether wearing a uniform or working as a civilian, team members face trials that test their fortitude and the holidays can be a particularly stressful time for many.

U.S. Air Force Capt. Lindsey N. Moser, a chaplain serving the garrison spoke about how each and every Airmen or Guardian matters, and how the holiday season can be a difficult time.

“Everyone associates the holidays with family, but for a lot of military personnel that may not be part of their reality — and that adjustment can be difficult,” said Moser.

“Making a point to see family is important, but taking leave is not always an option. I encourage people to take leave and deal with awkward conversations over dinner or the handmade socks from Aunt Betty because it’s worth it. If you can’t be near, consider a video call or exchange care packages with loved ones that you’re geographically separated from.”

Guardians and Airmen shared how they stay strong and resilient during the holiday season — making wingmen their family, staying in touch with loved ones afar, and taking care of both body and mind.

U.S. Space Force Capt. Juan Trujillo, 1st Space Operations Squadron crew commander is currently on a six-month deployment to Al-Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Trujillo highlights the importance of cultivating community.

“I work with a great team. We’ve formed a great camaraderie,” said Trujillo. “Despite a lot of changeover in a deployed environment, I think of them as a family away from home.

touch with family — and able keep up with their progress, activities and successes. I like to think I’m still there with them despite a nine-hour difference.”

Senior Airman Christopher Thao, 50th Communications Squadron network operations technician, was deployed to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, and spoke to the merit of seeing the value of yourself and others.

“Our mission was to help assist the Afghanistan refugees assimilate into the U.S. — we also provide humanitarian aid,” said Thao. “To keep my spirits up, I try to explore and experience new things with the people and teams here — sparking conversations about backgrounds, goals and history makes this whole experience worth it.”

Additionally, Thao maintains emotional resilience with physical resilience, going to the gym nearly every day.

“I think physical, spiritual and emotional resilience tie together,” said Thao.

“On my days off I try to go have fun and relax. Go out do something you’ve never

seen, eaten, or done before! It’ll break your own rut that you’re currently in.”

Echoing Trujillo, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Kaylah Williams, P-S GAR Chapel religious affairs journeyman stressed having trustworthy, nonjudgmental people in your life as paramount.

“It’s so important to have people who allow you to let your guard down and spill how you’re truly feeling,” said Williams.

“Create a family within your area to enjoy the holidays with. I recommend a holiday gathering with other Airmen and Guardians from various units to create a family away from home.”

The holiday season often rewards Airmen and Guardians with less responsibilities and an increase in down time, which so many look forward to.

However, for some, that time can conjure up doubts, loneliness and negative thoughts. Maintaining some structure and a sense of purpose during the holidays is important. Doing things that are intentionally good — for yourself and for others — can help maintain strength and resilience going into the new year.

“It doesn’t have to be big things, it can be little things, like candy canes and notes,” said Ditson.

— The 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron weather flight supports U.S. Space Force assets by delivering valuable terrestrial and space weather information to units at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever SFB and geographically separated units around the world, 24/7.

To help the USSF avoid operational complications due to weather, the 21st LRS weather flight tailors space-weather data gathered by the 2nd Weather Squadron headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, to brief operational U.S. Space Force units across the Front Range and Peterson-Schriever Garrison’s geographically separated units around the globe.

Satellites traveling though severe space weather have an increased chance of being struck by positively charged ions, possibly damaging or overwhelming sensors, solar cells and wiring. Additionally, space weather can elevate the in-orbit particle density, inflicting increased drag on assets causing them to change position and path.

Terrestrial weather, or weather on Earth, can interfere with space operations the same way it affects more common devices such as TVs and radios. Terrestrial weather

21st LRS weather flight personnel are innovating the future of weather support. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Bryan Fossick, 21st LRS weather flight space support cell noncommissioned officer in charge, completed the Space Weather Support Course at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, as both a student and moderator, assisting with the technical review and development of the program. His experience will help further the advancement of the 21st LRS weather flight space support capabilities and the overall weather support to the USSF. “It was cool to be out there with other weather people, seeing what their mission is and integrating what I learned from the course into our mission,” said Fossick.

Fossick was just the first from his unit to complete the SWSC. Frank Simon, 21st LRS weather flight chief of weather training and geographically separated units weather support, will be the next student to attend the course in February. Simon will first attend two weeks of the SWSC via Zoom before traveling to Keesler AFB to complete the last three weeks of the course in person.

To keep their office properly manned as well as current and up-to-date on space-weather operations, the 21st LRS are sending their personnel one-by-one to the SWSC ensuring they are doing their part in keeping the USSF ready to fight and above, always.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Having served in the U.S. Air Force for three years, and stationed at Schriever Space Force Base for the last eight months, Senior Airman Cole Headlee — 50th Security Forces Squadron Base Defense Operations Center controller — wakes up long before sunrise for the safety, security and protection of personnel at Schriever SFB. USAF security forces are integral to the mission of the USAF and U.S. Space Force.

“My daily duties are to secure and protect personnel and resources assigned to Schriever, and with that, ensuring Space Force mission success on a daily basis — while also policing the populous for the safety of all,” said Headlee.

Headlee is from Urbana, Ohio — a Midwestern town between Dayton and Columbus — and the son of a financial adviser and a paraprofessional educator. Before joining the Air Force, Headlee thought he would be a financial adviser, like his father.

“Honestly, I wanted to take over his business and his management spot,” said Headlee. However, the Defender ultimately decided upon the Air Force and security forces.

“I was thinking more about something that would benefit me, and develop me — and also, I knew would get a lot of cool experiences along with the benefits,” said Headlee. “To this day, I still believe the Air Force is one of the best options anybody can do, honestly.

The Air Force has so much to offer. Take it from me: At 19 years old, I had been to England, Cypress, France, Poland, Germany — traveling the world. Also, I’m a person who best functions with structure. When I have set tasks given to me by leadership, or by my supervisor,

that I have to accomplish — I have greater success.”

Helping him make the decision to join the Air Force, were students and friends he went to high school with in Ohio.

“There were four of us, one from my class and two from the class who graduated before me,” said Headlee.

“I did a lot of research on my own, but I had others who had already joined who I could ask questions about their initial experience. And here I am, and I absolutely love it — and so does my wife.”

Headlee’s wife is also in security forces, currently stationed at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea. Kunsan AB is one of two major USAF installations operated by the U.S. Forces Korea.

When asked how the Air Force has changed him for the better, the Schriever SFB Defender had a lot to say.

“The military has instilled a ton of discipline in me,” said Headlee. “When I was younger, I wasn’t the most obedient kid. I remember having a sit-down conversation with my parents about what I want do with my life and what I want to accomplish in my twenties and into my later years, and — believe it or not — I said would like to get some discipline. I’ve learned a lot about myself and how I work.”

Squadron BDOC controller — is Headlee’s supervisor, and had this to say about him as an Airman and person: “Senior Airman Headlee is an extremely important part of our mission as a BDOC controller,” said Gorder.

“His responsibility is command and control over all posts and patrols that protect our Space Force assets here at Schriever. With his knowledge, attention to detail and incredible work ethic, Senior Airman Headlee is more than qualified to perform such an important duty for the U.S. Space Force. I appreciate all the work he does — not only as an Airman, but as a person. He truly is a wingman. Everyone knows that if they need anything work-related or outside of work, Headlee is the one to call. He has always shown a passion for helping others and truly cares about the people around him.”

The work Headlee and fellow Defenders from the 50th SFS perform is vital to the garrison, USAF and USSF missions. In order to maintain motivation and resilience, the Defender has a phrase he reminds himself of daily.

“A quote that inspires me is simple yet meaningful: ‘Win the day,’” said Headlee.

“This quote was, and still is, said by my father who is my biggest role model and motivator. For me, ‘win the day’ means the small tasks you complete to make your day successful or the kind word that made someone smile, the positive motivation you give to others or the positive mindset you place within yourself, the actions you take to pull yourself out of a negative mindset or how you respond to various situations. ‘Win the day’ means taking the actions that I need to take to be the best Airman that I can — every day.”

Additionally, the Schriever SFB Defender believes in perseverance.

“Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it, honestly,” said Headlee. “Anyone can do anything that they want, as long as they have the motivation and dedication.”

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Robert Brownson, 50th Mission Support Group contracting specialist, was awarded the John Levitow Award during the Airman Leadership School Graduation Ceremony at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, Nov. 19, 2021. The John Levitow Award is given to a student based on scores of their leadership ability determined by both instructors and fellow students, and it is the highest award an enlisted service member can earn in Professional Military Education.

“I didn’t expect to win,” said Brownson. “I was just authentic and me the whole time. Even with that being the case, my peers thought of me highly enough to select me for it.”

Brownson, who was selected to promote to staff sergeant, came into ALS with a respect for the gravity of a supervisory position. During ALS, students focus on learning how to deal with leaders and subordinates who have different thought processes, mentalities and upbringings than their own.

“My main goal was to have the traits needed to be a good supervisor,” said Brownson. “Somebody’s career is in my hands. I don’t want to be in a position where I can affect them and then affect them negatively.”

Going forward, Brownson intends to commission. And while he doesn’t tie his what-you-see-is-what-you-get attitude to his earning the John Levitow Award, he has no plans to change that part of himself, and he will continue to apply it to his career.

Juice and snack bar opens in Peterson Fitness Center

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — A new juice and snack bar called Juice Bros held its grand opening in the Peterson Fitness Center on Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, Dec. 17, 2021. Co-owned by founder Omar Serbetci and Courteney Jones, Juice Bros offers a selection of smoothies and juices, as well as a menu of breakfast and lunch offerings — including a variety of vegetarian and vegan options — to serve the health and active living needs of the Peterson SFB community. This marks the first time the fitness center has had a food option in two years.

“My main objective is to get people to eat more veggies, or drink more veggies if they can’t eat them,” said Serbetci.

The Peterson SFB Juice Bros is the first to open in the continental U.S. and the first one co-owned by Jones, but it’s the seventh Juice Bros on a military installation. Serbetci opened the first location on Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, in 2006.

“The last vendors were selling some of the same stuff that you could get from the bowling center and the golf course,” said Roger Hill, 21st Force Support Squadron fitness and sports director. “These guys here are selling things that aren’t offered anywhere else on base.”

Hill consulted with colleagues in fitness and sports throughout the U.S. Air Force while searching for a replacement food option for the Peterson Fitness Center, and Juice Bros came highly recommended. He collaborated with Serbetci and Jones to introduce Juice Bros’ menu to 21st FSS leadership and built broad support.

“To me, it was the presentation that stood out,” said USAF Master Sgt. Lilliana Harris, 21st FSS fitness and sports section chief. “Everything was up front. You could see the fruit, vegetables and meat, and how it was presented.”

“You can make your salads, your rice bowls and your pita wraps the way you like it,” said Serbetci. “Everything is fresh. We’ve got homemade dressings, and our meat, we marinate and cook fresh every day.”

Serbetci has big plans for expanding Juice Bros across Air Force installations in the U.S., intending to open a further 20 locations within the next three years.
