This makes the 23rd year in a row that Peterson AFB has been named a Tree City USA since 1994.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — How many trees are on Peterson Air Force Base? Stop and think about it for a second. Is it a surprise that there are just under 10,000 trees around base?

Arbor Day is officially the last Friday in April, but here at Peterson AFB it’s observed a little later in the year. Children from the Peterson AFB Child and Youth Program gathered outside the STARBASE alongside Col. Eric Dorminey, 21st Space Wing vice commander, and Mr. Andy Schlosberg from the Colorado Forest Service, to plant two trees in observance of Arbor Day. Peterson AFB is also named Tree City USA for the 23rd year in a row on June 20, 2017.

The first Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Since then it has grown into a world-wide observance with over 40 countries participating in some kind of tree planting activity.

Revitalizing the squadron: Progress and next steps THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — As most Airmen are aware, the Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein, announced an effort to revitalize the squadron as the core fighting unit in the Air Force.

As Goldfein described it “the squadron is the beating heart of the United States Air Force; our most essential team.”

What responsibility do we have as leaders to help enact this change?

Peeling back additional duties and beefing up the command support staff isn’t the key goal behind revitalizing the squadron. It’s about rebuilding a sense of pride and accomplishment in every unit in knowing that we are directly responsible for developing our Airmen, creating an effective team, and constantly improving our readiness as we execute our respective missions.

While creating and maintaining that environment does fall to all levels of squadron leadership in their day-to-day activities, there are also opportunities for

Lt. Col. Christopher Bulson 821st Support Squadron individuals to share their ideas on how to improve the squadron Air Force wide.

After Goldfein announced his first focus area, he established a Revitalizing Air Force Squadrons team, headed by Brig.

Gen. Stephen Davis, Air Force Manpower, Organization and Resources director. This team has already visited 12 bases and interviewed over 1,000 Airmen to look at how different organizations support their squadrons in accomplishing their missions. As they visit another 12 bases before the end of August, their goal is to identify best practices that empower and better

prepare our squadron leadership teams.

However, since the majority of Airmen won’t get a chance to provide face-to-face input to the team, a crowdsourcing, idea website has also been established to enable direct feedback from the field.

The idea is for Airmen to offer their insight on identified challenges through online voting, commenting, and sharing, with the most popular ideas being brought back to Davis. The Revitalizing Air Force Squadrons Idea Site can be found at https://www.milsuite.mil/revitalize.

Reviewing the ideas and comments on this site reminded me that our people are very passionate about expressing their thoughts on two of the current challenges: core mission focus and squadron identity, and heritage and pride.

Airmen are submitting hundreds of votes and comments on everything from Air Force Instructions and evaluation and awards programs to adopting Operational Camouflage Pattern uniforms or bringing back patches and squadron ball caps.

Action Line The 21st Space Wing maintains a commander's action line, a direct link to the 21st Space Wing commander. The wing commander encourages its use. Concerns should be addressed at the lowest possible level in the chain of command and elevated as necessary.

I would encourage you to visit the site and offer your thoughts to help give the Revitalizing Air Force Squadrons team a more representative view of the issues and potential solutions to make our squadrons better.

Goldfein has set his eye on our squadrons, identified some problems and aligned resources in less than 10 months.

We each need to do the same at the squadron level; come up with our own focus areas, be innovative to get us to our goals and work as a team to make our units better. The past year at Thule Air Base, Greenland, has been a wonderful experience. I’m proud to have seen a collection of Airmen come together from various functional backgrounds to build a cohesive team that is dedicated to a focused mission. I’ll strive to replicate this feeling of pride, mission accomplishment and camaraderie in my future squadrons, knowing that our strength at the unit level will build a stronger Air Force for the future.

Lunch-n-Learn: How to lead Millennials

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Team Pete Airmen attended a lunch-n-learn seminar to learn about leading the millennial generation, June 14, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

The seminar was hosted by Master Sgt. Robert Valenzuela, 21st Wing Staff Agency additional duty first sergeant, on behalf of Master Sgt. Gerald Morey, 21st WSA first sergeant, to bring Airmen together to learn and discuss topics surrounding everyday Air Force life, questions and concerns.

This month, Tech. Sgt. Thomas Echelmeyer, 21st Aerospace Medicine Squadron Bioenvironmental Engineering NCO in charge, led the discussion on how to lead the millennial generation or Generation Y in today’s Air Force.

For the past couple generations, Generation Y includes anyone born between the years 1980-2000, and Generation X or Gen Xers from 1970-1980.

During the seminar, Echelmeyer briefed that 51 percent of the service members on Team Pete are millennials and 48 percent are Gen Xers. There is a wider gap in the Air Force statistics, 73% are millennials and only 26% are Gen X. The millennials are known as the Generation Y because they ask a lot of questions or “why,” said Echelmeyer. Also, in order to lead millennials, leaders need to understand what motivates them to better accomplish the mission.

“One of our panel members has this great quote so I make sure she says it or I say it during this class, ‘It’s okay to ask questions, it’s not okay to question,’” he said. “I love that (quote), because it really embraces what the millennials are about. The millennials aren’t always just questioning, they have honest questions.”

Echelmeyer and the seminar participants discussed everything from work ethic, relationships, education and religion.

They also talked about the differences in what is valued between the generations and how technology has driven the changes.

Echelmeyer also teaches the Millennial Leadership course at the Professional Development Center at Peterson AFB. The PDC course runs approximately three hours and also includes a panel with an Airman, NCO, senior NCO and an officer. Contact the PDC at 719-556-9226.

Tree City USA From page 1 because this is a community and having trees is an investment in the future,” said Schlosberg. “Arbor day is a celebration of what hasn’t come yet.”

Peterson AFB was named a Tree City USA in 1994 for the commitment the base has to planting trees and keeping it green.

The requirements for being named are;

the base must have a Tree Board or Tree Department with the base civil engineering squadron acting as a forester, a tree ordinance must be included in the general base plan, and a budget of a minimum of $2 per capita based on the population of the community. Peterson AFB spent $10.33 per person in 2016.

Also in attendance was Paul Poppert, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron landscape architect. Poppert’s job on base is to look after and tend to the needs of the trees on base, in addition to keeping everything else green.

“We have around 9,750 trees on base that we keep track of, there’s more here than you would think,” said Poppert.

Poppert went on to add that the trees are beneficial to Peterson AFB for a number of reasons for example reducing wind and heat islands across the base.

During his remarks at the ceremony Dorminey urged everyone to take some time and appreciate the trees for everything they provide us, and maybe to plant some of their own off base as well and enjoy the extra oxygen, especially here.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Thirty Airmen from the 21st Space Wing, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., were hosted by the Denver Broncos football team, June 14th, for a morale event at the Broncos Training Facility.

The Broncos held a luncheon and team practice for the Airmen along with their spouses and significant others.

Resilient courage for an 11-year-old

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Lt. Col. Tim Schwamb, North American Aerospace Defense Command standardization and evaluation chief at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, and his wife, Cristi, have a daughter who was born with a serious heart defect. At age three, Lauren received a heart transplant and has been treated at hospitals across the country.

“It was a stressful time,” said Tim. “We were trying to get Lauren higher on the transplant list due to the severity of her heart defect.”

Lauren was admitted to a children’s hospital in Philadelphia right after New Year’s in 2009.

Cristi stayed with Lauren while Tim was geographically separated from them for seven months “That was tough as I continued to go to work and our older two kids stayed in Washington D.C.” Tim said. “Fortunately our parents took turns taking staying with us in D.C. or they took the kids to their house.”

During those seven months there were a couple of times where they thought they had a donor only to find out a few hours later that it wasn’t a match.

Finally, on July 27 there was one.

Lauren did amazingly well throughout her surgery and her recovery was much quicker than doctors had expected.

“It was an answer to our prayers, and we were thankful for all the doctors that that took such good care of Lauren.”

Tim said. “We were also mindful of the family that had lost a child and had given the gift of life to Lauren so she could have a new chance at life.”

Like many children of military families, Lauren has moved around a lot and been treated at hospitals across the country. From this, Tim and Cristi know from experience how important it is to receive the best pediatric health care.

“When I learned we would be stationed at Peterson AFB in August 2015, we were thrilled that Lauren could be treated at a children’s hospital in Denver,” said Tim. One of the things Lauren had always wanted was to have her ears pierced but couldn’t because of the risk for infection. She had a higher chance because of her heart surgery.

“While we were living in Arizona the doctors wouldn’t let me get my ears pierced,” said Lauren. “When I went to

“For transplant patients ear piercing is a big deal because there’s a greater chance of infection,” said Cristi.

Shortly after the good news, Lauren got her ears pierced.

Thanks to her resilient spirit and the thoughtful care she receives at the children’s hospital, Lauren is now a happy 11-year-old living with her mom and dad, said Cristi.

Lauren is currently home schooled by her mother.

This year Lauren was nominated by doctors and community members to serve as an ambassador for a children’s

hospital where she shares her medical history through interviews, presentations and events to provide awareness for other children and their families.

“She tells her story to show why it’s so important to have a dedicated children’s hospital here in Colorado Springs,” said Cristi. “She tells the story of how the doctors at the hospital put the children and their needs first.

Today Lauren concentrates on the entertaining aspects in her life, performing in a church drama production, singing with the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, and collecting Junior Ranger badges when vacationing National Parks.

Army doctor selected for NASA astronaut training

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — After an extensive year-and-a-half search, NASA has selected 12 people for its 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class, which includes one Soldier.

Maj. Frank Rubio, a physician serving with the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Carson, Colorado, was selected from a pool of more than 18,300 applicants.

Rubio says he is ecstatic to have been chosen. “It’s one of those things where you hope and hope that it’s going to happen but you kind of guard yourself against hoping too much because the odds are pretty darn slim. When it happened, it was awesome. It’s hard to describe to be honest. It’s thrilling, it’s exciting, and it’s a relief to some degree because you’ve been going through this process for a year and a half.

Rubio will join Astronauts Lt. Col. Drew Morgan and Maj. Anne McClain as part of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command’s Astronaut Detachment in Houston, Texas, starting in August. He will begin two years of training as an astronaut candidate to include International Space Station systems training, Extravehicular Activity skills training, Robotics skills training, Russian language training, and aircraft flight readiness training.

Rubio said he is looking forward to all aspects of the process.

“In a way it’s daunting, because there’s so much to learn and study. But flying jets and scuba diving is going to be really cool, and I like robotics. Even learning Russian, which is a little bit intimidating, is something I look forward to. I think it’s going to be enjoyable learning for the most part.

I’m like a kid in a candy store.”

Rubio, a Florida native, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and earned a Doctorate of Medicine from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Prior

to attending medical school, he served as a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot and flew more than 1,100 hours, including 600 hours of combat and imminent danger time during deployments to Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

He says his Army training and experiences are going to help him in as he begins his astronaut training.

“The number one thing that will help me is probably the teamwork side of it,” he said. “That’s what the Army does.

We work in teams, and we succeed in teams. Everything is team based for the most part. It took me a few years to really appreciate that, but over my 20-year career, I’ve come to really appreciate it more and more.

“It’s great to be chosen to be an astronaut. Almost all of the missions are team-based operations, so I think that played a big part in the selection. I have really been blessed more than anything.”

Rubio said going through many experiences, some dangerous and high risk, helped him to learn to handle situations appropriately by staying calm and taking a step at a time.

“After a while, I think those experiences kind of add up and just make you better because you’ve practiced at dealing with them,” he said. “So hopefully that will translate well into to the space exploration environment also.”

After completion of the two years of training, Rubio will be assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office while he awaits a flight assignment.

“Obviously everybody is thinking about Mars right now,” said Rubio. “I think because of the movies and all that, but that’s really the long-term goal. Realistically the chances of me doing that mission are very slim. Just going to space is going to be awesome. Then if I get to contribute to the goal of going to Mars by going to the ISS and doing experiments, that will be great. I think the intermediate step is going to be moon-based operations just to kind of practice for Mars.

So any of those assignments would be phenomenal.

“Really what I’m focused on is that first time I’m strapped into a rocket getting ready to launch. That to me will be the culminating point that I’m focused on,” Rubio said.

WASHINGTON — “This is the next step in our effort to integrate, normalize and elevate space operations in the Air Force,” said Wilson. “The United States is dependent on space and our adversaries know it. We must organize and train forces to be able to prevail in any future conflict which could extend into space.”

The new directorate will begin operating in early August. Over the next two months, the Air Force will work to stand up the Deputy Chief of Staff for Space Operations directorate — or “A-11” — by establishing

an initial A-11 cadre, establishing operations and identifying the senior leaders who will lead the new staff.

“A new three-star deputy chief of staff for space … will increase decision making speed and help ensure freedom from attack and freedom to maneuver,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein.

“The Air Force culture evolved to own the skies and is now best postured to lead space into this information age and prepare our people and systems to achieve space superiority so the warfighter has what’s required to win.”

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — A leading relationship researcher has some advice for Airmen when it comes to healthy, successful relationships: don’t slide — decide.

“It’s important to not slide through relationship transitions that might impact your life, which could include having sex, becoming pregnant, having a child, moving in together.

These are all things that could change your life,” said Dr. Scott Stanley, a research professor at the University of Denver.

Stanley spoke to a group of relationship and violence prevention experts who work for Air Force Space Command.

“People tend to slide through things like this now instead of really thinking through what’s going on and making a clear decision about who they are and what they’re about and what they want,” Stanley said.

According to Stanley, couples often move in together — or cohabitate — to test out their relationship and see if it’s a good fit, which they believe will increase their likelihood of staying together long-term. Not so, says Stanley, who cited research that shows that couples who cohabitate before being married are actually more likely to get divorced later on.

This is because couples who are in the early, very passionate stages of relationships often take a series of seemingly minor steps, or slide, as Stanley calls it. These decisions lead to

constraints, which are factors that make breaking up harder.

Examples of constraints include pets, kids, house, money or attitudes of family, friends and religious organizations that add up and eventually make it very difficult to break up, even though neither partner has actually decided that they want a long-term relationship.

Later on, says Stanley, if one partner wants out, they’ve put themselves into a situation where it’s difficult to leave, which leads to bigger problems.

“I’m encouraging people to go a little slower and make decisions with themselves or with their partner about what they’re about and what they’re doing, to talk it out and decide before moving forward,” said Stanley. That’s a message Stanley recommends leaders pass on to their Airmen.

According to Stanley’s research, there is not necessarily a direct link between cohabitation and aggression in relationships.

“Cohabiting makes it harder to leave a relationship, even if you want to,” said Stanley. “So their relationship lasts longer than it otherwise would, and then frustration, conflict patterns develop that can lead to incidents of pushing, shoving, slapping.”

Stanley warns leaders not to try to tell their subordinates what to do and what not to do in their personal lives, which is mostly counter-productive. Instead, Stanley says it’s best to just present the facts in a non-judgmental way.

“You can get emerging adults’ attention by saying some-

times when we’re going really fast in our romantic lives, we’re letting things slide that cause us to lose options before we’ve really chosen what we want in life,” said Stanley.

Christina Grooms, a community support coordinator at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, says Stanley’s message is one that many Airmen haven’t heard before, but could do a lot of good.

“Relationship issues and concerns continue to be the number one issue that we see across the board in the military,” says Grooms, who intends to include the research in Wingman Day, the First Term Airman Course, and other activities.

“Folks can learn more to better their relationships that they’re in, and make better decisions for themselves in the long run.”

Dr. Ken Robinson, violence prevention integrator at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, says it’s possible to bring Stanley’s message to Airmen.

“It’s fact. It’s not conjecture or opinion, it’s based on what the research supports,” said Robinson, “Just talk to them in a down-to-earth way.”

Stanley spoke at the 2017 Air Force Space Command Prevention Summit — a gathering of community support coordinators and violence prevention integrators from around the command. The Violence Prevention Integrator is a relatively new position as part of an Air Force-wide push to equip leaders and Airmen to strengthen relationships and prevent violence and suicides.

— Quite a few members of the community have mastered skills in literary expression and art as a means to overcome struggles experienced in everyday life and the oppression they’ve experienced.

Some of the excellent literature to be explored includes poetry, novels and contemporary stories. See a few of excellent recommendations below, located within the Library of Congress.

Walt Whitman was a famous poet who was gay and often wrote stories for newspapers in the early 1850s. One novel of his you may find interesting is called “A Rich Revelation.”

Also check out “Love has to be Reinvented,” by Jean Cocteau, who was an influential French artist as well as a writer.

He was known as one of the major figures of Dada and Surrealism.

Maureen Cummins created a special collection from love letters she acquired in New York from young men before the world wars. Her collection is called “Far Rockaway: A Romantic Correspondence.”

Another novel that may broaden your horizon is by Clarissa Sligh, titled “Wrongly Bodied Two.” She wrote of two coinciding stories, where one was a white male “imprisoned” in a woman’s body, and an African American woman who escaped slavery by disguising as a white man. This book describes society’s psychological response to the act of changing one’s identity.

An excellent compilation of personal

stories of ten lesbian and gay couples were published by Cheri Gaulke and Sue Maberry in “Marriage Matters.” These two felt their twenty-six year relationship had transformed them into artists.

Military Life Focus

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Andrew James Chier served in the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, tells of his experiences as a gay Airman serving before and after the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

U.S. Army Sgt. Christina A. Frisby tells of her perseverance when she was denied military service due to her sexual orientation after completing the U.S. Naval Academy. She went on to join the Army National Guard after September 11, and served in Iraq.

U.S. Air Force Sgt. Theresa Ruggiero served during the Cold War, tells of her frustration of inner conflicts with her gender, followed by the acceptance she received from her comrades upon joining the Air Force Medical field.

U.S. Army Private 1st Class Franklin Kameny served in World War II and returned home to pursue a doctorate in astronomy. He was hired and then fired by the Army for being gay. After fighting his own case, he became a paralegal to protect the discriminatory actions towards others and gay rights of draftees.

Mattis asks Congress for stable budgets, end to sequestration

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis today launched a full-throated attack on looming across-the-board spending cuts during a budget hearing on Capitol Hill, saying “no enemy in the field has done more to harm the combat readiness of our military than sequestration.”

The sequestration provision of the Budget Control Act of 2011 imposes across-the-board spending cuts if Congress and the White House cannot agree on more targeted cuts.

Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee about the president’s fiscal year 2018 defense budget request, Mattis also addressed the erosion of American military dominance in a time of increased uncertainty and dangers.

The proposed fiscal 2018 budget calls for a $639.1 billion topline. This breaks down to $574.5 billion for the Defense Department’s base budget requirements and $64.6 billion for overseas contingency operations.

‘No Room for Complacency’

The American military remains the strongest force on the face of the Earth, but “there is no room for complacency, and we have no God-given right to victory on the battlefield,” Mattis said. “Each generation of Americans, from the halls of Congress to the battlefields, earn victory through commitment and sacrifice.”

Sequestration was designed to be so injurious to the military that it would force Congress to compromise so its imposition would not be necessary. It remains in effect unless Congress changes the law. Mattis noted that in nine of the past 10 years, Congress has enacted 30 separate continuing resolutions to fund DoD, adding that this inhibits readiness, innovation and modernization.

“We need bipartisan support for this budget request,” the secretary told the committee. “In the past, by failing to pass a budget on time or eliminate the threat of sequestration, Congress sidelined itself from its active constitutional oversight role. Continuing resolutions coupled with sequestration blocked new programs, prevented service growth, stalled industry initiative and placed troops at greater risk.

Despite the tremendous efforts of this committee, Congress as a whole has met the present challenge with lassitude, not leadership.”

Previous defense secretaries, he noted, have warned Congress of the erosion of capabilities sequestration would bring. It is only thanks to the troops themselves, he said, that the problems are not greater.

The secretary urged the committee and other members of Congress to “fully fund our request, which requires an increase to the defense budget caps” and to pass a fiscal 2018 defense budget in a timely manner “to avoid yet another harmful continuing resolution” and to “eliminate the threat of future sequestration cuts so we can provide a stable budgetary planning horizon.”

Concurrent Factors

Congress must take into account external factors that influence budget deliberations, Mattis said. The first is that the United States military has been at war for 16 years — the longest period in the nation’s history. “America’s long war has placed a heavy burden on men and women in uniform and their families,” he said.

The second concurrent force acting on the department is a worsening global situation, the secretary told the House panel. “We must look reality in the eye; Russia and China are seeking veto power over the economic, diplomatic and security decisions on their periphery,” he said. “North Korea’s reckless rhetoric and provocative actions could continue

despite United Nations censure and sanctions, while Iran remains the largest long-term challenge to Mideast stability. All the while, terrorist groups murder the innocent and threaten peace in many regions and target us.”

A third force acting on DoD are adversaries contesting U.S. military capabilities. Since the end of the Cold War, the United States had uncontested superiority in every military domain or realm, the secretary said. “Today, every operating domain … is contested,” he said.

Technological change is another force acting on the department. This mandates new investment, innovative approaches and new program starts — something denied under continuing resolutions, Mattis said.

All these forces require a stable budget and increased funding “to provide for the protection of our citizens and for the survival of our freedoms,” he said.

Five Priorities

The secretary said the fiscal 2018 budget reflects five priorities, the first being to continue to improve warfighter readiness.

The second priority is to increase the capacity and lethality of military capabilities. The third priority is to reform the way DoD does business, and he promised the lawmakers the department will accomplish a clean audit. He also called on Congress to support DoD’s request to conduct another round of base closures and realignments, saying this could save up to $2 billion a year.

The fourth priority is to keep faith with service members and their families. “Talented people are the department’s most valuable asset, but we must constantly balance these requirements against other investments critical to readiness, equipment and modernization to ensure the military is the most capable warfighting force in the world,” he said.

“Investment in military compensation, blended retirement, the Military Health System and family programs are essential to fielding the talent we need to sustain our competitive advantage on the battlefield.”

Support for the overseas contingency operations is the fifth priority of the budget, the secretary said. These funds focus on operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, as well as bumping up U.S. capabilities in Europe.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — For Vicki Rygiel, winning the Air Force award for Civilian Specialist of the Year is inconsequential to the benefits her career of helping children and families learn and thrive has provided her.

“I was humbly surprised (to receive the award); it’s quite an honor.” Rygiel said. “Abraham Lincoln said ‘whatever you are, be a good one;’ from seven years ago when I took my oath to serve the government, I took it to heart.”

A former School Age Care program coordinator for the 50th Force Support Squadron, now fulfilling the same role with the 21st Force Support Squadron at Peterson Air Force Base, Rygiel said her more than three years at Schriever helped form a foundation for her career.

“I learned a great deal at Schriever about being a School Age Care program coordinator,” Rygiel said. “I’ve made mistakes, like everybody does, but I learned from them. In all, it was a really good experience.”

Her Schriever years were characterized with path-paving efforts for the 50 FSS in innovating new programs and benefits to Schriever kids and families in the base community, said Mary Barkley, 50 FSS Airman and Family Services flight chief, and an important mentor during her time there, according to Rygiel.

“She took a program that had no real supervision and created a spectacular School Age Care program; taking it to a level I couldn’t even imagine,” Barkley said. “Her strongest characteristic is that she works well with people — helping get them to come out and work with our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and 4-H (Head, Heart, Hands and Health) programs. In addition, she brought in new programming we haven’t even had before.”
