Light always comes after the darkness

Have you read a dark book lately? Watched a dark or scary movie? Had a bright idea? Or come up with an enlightening thought? In English, dark images are often perceived negatively, while light means something positive and uplifting.

Actually, the connection between dark and negativity, and light and happiness, extends beyond language and culture. In the northern hemisphere December has the fewest hours of sunlight and, at the same time, Christians, Jews, and other faith traditions are celebrating holidays of light.

It’s no surprise that these holidays come as a human response to the darkness found during this time of year and the psychological impact that the long nights have on our lives.

In Alaska the extremes of day and night in the summer and winter can often impact the mental health of many people. For instance, during an Alaskan summer the sun starts setting at 10:30 pm or later (some areas don’t have any night at all). In the winter, on the other hand, the sun sets at 2:30 pm or earlier (some areas don’t have any daylight at all). In order for the sunset to go from one extreme to another, the sun actually sets about 25 minutes earlier each week; that equals three to four minutes per day! The difference is so palpable that the human body can

physiologically feel the increasing darkness. Imagine that you are going through a tough time in life or if you are depressed. As the sun sets earlier and earlier, it is easy for people to grow increasingly unhappy.

Not surprisingly, you will find that many religious traditions celebrate festivals of light during the fall and winter months, the darkest time of the year. For example, the Hindus celebrate their festival of light, Diwali, in the northern hemisphere between mid-October and mid-November.

Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Most Christian traditions celebrate advent and Christmas in December with candles and lights. Colored or white lights are strung on Christmas trees and adorn the front of many houses in a spirit of celebration. The Jewish community also celebrates their festival of lights, Hanukkah, in December or January. Finally, many earth-centered spiritual traditions mark Yule in the end of December as a mid-winter festival with lights.

Perhaps there is a common reason for so many traditions to celebrate light at this time of year. During the darkest times of the year, or during the darkest times of our lives, we need

to be reminded that darkness doesn’t endure. It never lasts.

Spring is around the corner—the time when nature begins to wake up, blooms sprout on trees and flowers erupt with color. New life is born, and the days begin to grow longer, resulting in more daylight. There is theology in the changing seasons of the year. Light always follows the darkness and hope bursts into our lives like a ray of sunshine.

No matter how depressed you are, how dark your life is, or the problems that are in the world, there is always hope.

The divine light is always around us. It’s there to support us in the worst of times.

So, as you celebrate your holiday of light, whatever your tradition, look around you. How can you be a light for someone else? Does someone at work, at home, in your neighborhood or community need you to shine a bright light into their life or heart? Our American culture preaches “life is all about me,” but most faith traditions teach otherwise. When we focus on others, and tend to their needs as well as our own, our light burns brighter and we find ourselves experiencing true joy, lasting peace, and a light in our hearts.

Finally, as we shine our proverbial lights our paths are illuminated, allowing us to see what is around us so we can count our blessings. Is there someone you love or someone who loves you? What good things are you looking forward to next year? Always remember that even in the darkest times of our lives, light is just over the mountain or around the corner. So, this winter, remember to keep shining your light to those around you. The light you get back will seep into the crevices of your soul and shine on those in your path. Happy Holidays!

As the weather changes, there may be instances in which Peterson AFB leadership will announce delayed reporting and/or base closures.

When a base closure has been announced, only mission essential personnel are to report to work.

When delayed reporting has been announced, it is mandatory for non-essential personnel to comply with reporting instructions. This allows snow removal crews to clear base roads and parking lots with minimal obstructions for maximum safety. Weather safety conditions vary widely across the Pikes Peak area, so individuals with commuting concerns should contact their leadership for risk management issues. If duty status is changed, information will be updated on Peterson AFB’s Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, snow call line 719-556-SNOW (719-556-7669), local radio and television stations.

USAFE-UK host RAF leaders, sign interoperability charter

Brig. Gen. Andrew Hansen, U.S. Air Forces Europe-United Kingdom director, hosted Air Vice-Marshal Harv Smyth, Air

Officer Commanding No. 1 Group, last week to strengthen host nation ties and sign the CAIWG charter. The agreement outlines operational integration of advanced fighters and training infrastructure.

“Anytime we can come together as allies and improve our readiness states is a victory,” Smyth said. “I’m happy to have this opportunity to sign the charter and continue

our special relationship.”

The CAIWG is a working group composed of U.S. and Royal Air Force leaders who discuss issues related to airspace and training ranges for fourth and fifth-generation aircraft.

“Today both nations took a step together to ensure readiness and interoperability for our fifth-generation aircraft,” said Hansen. “The

charter gives us an opportunity to quantify our roles and responsibilities and further solidifies the strong alliance we have with the United Kingdom.”

The timing of the charter is critical due to the arrival of the F-35B Lighting II to RAF Marham, U.K., June 7, 2018 and the projected arrival of the F-35A Lighting II to RAF Lakenheath in 2021.

Peterson AFB lights up for holidays

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Airmen and their families gathered on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, the first week of December to kick off the holiday season.

Col. Sam Johnson, 21st Space Wing vice commander, began the annual Menorah lighting ceremony Dec. 4, 2018, at the Peterson AFB Chapel, with a few words about family and hope.

“The menorah signifies hope, and in the military, we’re sort of the hope of America,” Johnson said. “If anybody in America hopes for peace, it’s us.”

Outside the chapel, Johnson flipped the switch on the 12foot Menorah, lighting the third candle of the Jewish holiday.

Children in the audience listened to a recounting of the history of Hanukkah, learning how the people living in Judea set out to rebuild their temple following a rebellion against the Syrian king, Antiochus IV. Judah’s followers went in search of olive oil that had not been made by the Greeks, finding just enough to light the menorah for 24 hours. Instead, the candles kept burning for eight nights.

Throughout history, Jews have showed a dedication to celebrating Hanukkah at all costs, said Rabbi Moshe Eliezer Liberow, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Southern Colorado.

“That is the message of Hanukkah,” Liberow said. “The good news is, here in the United States and on this wonderful Air Force base, we’re free to celebrate Hanukkah with freedom, with ease, with joy.”

Families returned to the chapel Dec. 6, 2018, for the annual Peterson AFB Christmas Tree Lighting. The Peterson Children’s Choir serenaded guests as they awaited the arrival of Santa Claus.

“It is our hope as people drive by the chapel during this holiday season and see the lights covering this beautiful tree that they would be encouraged by the light,” Spencer said.

“As we focus on the light of the season and allow our own light to shine, it brings illumination, hope, and warmth – not only to others, but for ourselves as well.”

Mathematician inducted into Space and Missiles Pioneers Hall of Fame AIR FORCE SPACE COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Lt. Gen. David Thompson, Air Force Space Command vice commander, presented Dr. Gladys West with the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers award for her decades of contributions to the Air Force’s space program. West was unable to attend the formal induction ceremony that took place August 28, where three others joined the elite list of professionals who have greatly impacted the Air Force space program.

Dr. Gladys West is among a small group of women who did computing for the U.S. military in the era before electronic systems. Hired in 1956 as a mathematician at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory, she participated in a path-breaking, award-winning astronomical study that proved, during the early 1960s, the regularity of Pluto’s

motion relative to Neptune. Thereafter, from the mid-1970s through the 1980s, using complex algorithms to account for variations in gravitational, tidal, and other forces that distort Earth’s shape, she programmed an IBM 7030 “Stretch” computer to deliver increasingly refined calculations for an extremely accurate geodetic Earth model, a geoid, optimized for what ultimately became the Global Positioning System (GPS) orbit.

The Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Award pays tribute to the leaders of the early years of the Air Force space program, as well as the subsequent innovators whose vision and perseverance overcame the obstacles of the unknown, those who transformed the cutting edge of technology into operational systems, and those who dedicated their lives to exploring space in support of our national security concerns.

31st TES begins F-35 Initial Operational Test and Evaluation

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.

(AFNS) — The 31st Test and Evaluation Squadron kicked off the Defense Department’s F-35 Lightning II Initial Operational Test and Evaluation with a large force employment sortie from Edwards AFB, California, Dec. 5.

“The sorties consisted of seven F-35s performing both offensive counter air, suppression of enemy air defenses and air attack operations. This marks an important milestone for the F-35 program,” said Lt. Col. Nicholas Ihde, 31st TES commander.

During the IOT&E phase, the 31st TES F-35 pilots will fly more than 30 missions designed to fully evaluate the complete air system as well as identify technical and operational areas for improvement.

“These unique flights place the aircraft in realistic combat conditions with our joint and coalition partners to determine the operational effectiveness and suitability for the warfighter,” Ihde said.

The 31st TES has 10 F-35 pilots, 145

maintainer’s and 11 engineers to bring the F-35 program through this phase. If they discover an issue they will work with the director of operational test and evaluation, Lockheed Martin and the F-35 Joint Program Office to address it before going out to the fleet.

“As the conduit between developmental test flights and combat missions it is our duty to ensure this aircraft fulfills the need of the warfighter, (major command), and the American public," Ihde said. "We must guarantee that we hand the Combat Air Force a product that has been tested with rigor and is ironed out. An advantage the 31st TES possesses is pilot experience.

Navajo Airman continues family's military legacy at Whiteman

WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. (AFNS) — (This feature is part of the "Through Airmen's Eyes" series on AF.mil. These stories focus on a single Airman, highlighting their Air Force story.)

Airman 1st Class Phillip Rock is part of his family’s legacy of military service – a legacy that, in fact, would not have continued if it weren’t for that military service itself.

Stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base, Rock is a B-2 Spirit weapons load crew member in the 509th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. It is his first Air Force assignment and the most recent in his family’s military history.

“I was raised in Kayenta, Arizona, which is an hour away from the four corners,” said Phillip, who is three-quarters Navajo American Indian. “It is really the heart of the reservation.”

Raised by his grandparents, he learned much about his cultural heritage from them. He also learned where his family’s long military lineage began.

This Rock family tradition started with his great grandfather, Joseph Rock – Grandpa Joe – who served in World War II. “At first, I didn’t know much about what my great grandfather had done,” Phillip said.

Grandpa Joe died in 2004 at age 92 when Phillip was 5 years old. It wasn’t until he was nearly a teen that Phillip realized his great grandfather was a war hero.

One day, when Rock was 12 years old, he was flipping through TV channels with his grandfather, Ernest Rock Sr., in their living room. They stopped to watch a historical documentary about World War II. Rock recalled asking his grandfather about his great grandfather’s role in the major world conflict which spanned across Europe and the Pacific.

“I said, ‘Isn’t that the war Grandpa Joe fought in? What did he do?’”

His grandfather told Phillip “He was a code talker.”

Western expansion, cultural repression It was the early 1900s and Joseph Rock was a young boy living on a Navajo reservation in Arizona. As the country expanded westward, much of the tribe’s land was taken by the U.S. government. Joseph was sent to school, where his long hair was cut and his name was changed.

“He went up to a chalkboard, pointed at a random configuration of letters, and that’s how he became Joseph Rock,” Phillip said. “Four generations later, we still carry on that last name.”

Grandpa Joe was also punished in school if he spoke his native language – the same language that would later save countless lives.

By 1941, shortly after the U.S. had entered WWII, the Marine Corps began to recruit Navajo tribal members for a top-secret code-communications program that wouldn’t

linguistically difficult. And at that time, it had not been written down. The U.S. government knew it would be nearly impossible for a non-Navajo to learn.

So, in the early 1940s, Navajo code talkers used their language to create more than 200 new words for military terms and then committed them to memory.

“The enemy never understood it,” a Marine general was quoted as saying after the Navajo code was first used in WWII. “We don't understand it either, but it works.”

The Navajo code is the only spoken military code that has never been deciphered, and Navajo code talkers are credited with saving thousands of Americans’ and allies’ lives.

Winning the war Before he knew his Grandpa Joe served as a code talker, Phillip learned about his tribe’s role in WWII as a boy in school.

“We were taught that we should be extremely thankful for what they did,” Phillip said. “Without the code talkers, we wouldn’t have won the war.”

During the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, Navajo code talkers worked around the clock sending and receiving thousands of messages. One Marine later stated, "Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima,” according to the Naval History and Heritage Command.

Joseph Rock was one of those code talkers involved in the critical battle to claim the Pacific island.

During the battle, a grenade landed only feet away from Joseph Rock, who “watched it hit the ground,” Phillip said.

Then, Joseph Rock saw one of his fellow Marines dive on top of it, giving his life to save Grandpa Joe. “He wanted to save the life of a code talker,” Phillip Rock said. “It’s inspiring what people will do to continue with the mission. My Grandpa Joe owed his life to that man.”

Neither Joseph Rock nor the Rock family was ever able to find out who the Marine was, but know future generations of Rocks have their lives thanks to his valor.

“I owe my life to that man, too,” Phillip said.

At first, fewer than 30 Navajo Indians were recruited as code talkers. In total, only about 400 of the 44,000 American Indians who served in WWII were Navajo code talkers.

Joseph Rock was asked to work among them, and he accepted.

“He was told if he served, the family would get some of their land back and a house,” Phillip Rock said. “None of that happened.”

But those promises weren’t what enticed Grandpa Joe to join the military. He wanted to serve his country, and did so honorably.

“My great grandfather was proud of his service,” Phillip Rock said. “It’s his legacy.”

Culture and service Since Grandpa Joe, many members of the Rock family have answered their nation’s call including his grandfather, his father, uncles and an aunt.

For Phillip, his great grandfather’s service as a code talker influenced Philip’s own decision to join the Air Force.

Phillip is the most recent member of his family to serve in the military.

“I feel like it was a prideful thing to carry on that lineage of service,” said Phillip. “It felt like the right calling. My Grandpa Joe was the first to wear this name on a uniform.

I am very proud of this name. I knew I wanted to carry that on and wear it on a uniform.”

Meanwhile, Navajo principles have taught him respect, perseverance and determination.

“My culture really shapes who I am,” Phillip Rock says. “I wear my culture on my sleeve and my name on my chest.”

Military recruitment This was not the first time American Indians were recruited for U.S. military service, either as combatants or code talkers. During the first World War, American troops relied on messages transmitted in Cherokee and Choctaw tribal languages to pass secret information. However, the languages used were eventually all deciphered by enemy troops.

Grit and determination: AFSOC Airmen slide with Team USA bobsled

(AFNS) — Hours, days, weeks, months and even years of training have prepared two Airmen for one moment – four explosive seconds at the top of a winding icy track in a city that once hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Early days of sprinting, heavy lifting, box jumps and squats have faded into late nights of sanding runners, making countless adjustments and pushing through frustrations to shave off hundredths of a second pushing a 500-pound sled 60 meters.

The goal? A chance to make a team in four years. A chance for a medal. A chance to represent their nation and the Air Force. A chance.

Two Airmen within Air Force Special Operations Command were selected to compete with the USA Bobsled team this year. Capt. Dakota Lynch, a 34th Special Operations Squadron U-28A pilot, and Capt.

Chris Walsh, a 24th Special Operations Wing special tactics officer, are push athletes who are ultimately competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in 2022.

“If you want it bad enough, you’re going to do whatever it takes to be successful … that’s the grit of this sport,” said Walsh. “It takes four years of commitment to make yourself better with every opportunity and even then you’re never really quite there … you have to keep grinding.”

As push athletes, both Airmen train vigorously on sprinting and strength to accelerate a bobsled up to 24 miles per hour in close

to four seconds while the pilot focuses on navigating hairpin turns in a choreographed chaos down the ice.

“It’s a metal and carbon fiber bullet rifling down an ice track at speeds of 85-95 miles per hour,” Lynch said. “It’s like a fast-moving jet with a monkey at the controls while getting in a fight with Mike Tyson … it can be incredibly violent.”

Preceding the countless hours in the gym and on the track, the ride begins with a dream to succeed at the highest athletic level. For Walsh, it was an article in a magazine and for Lynch, it was a challenge from friends while deployed to Africa. For both, it would begin a journey of bruises, scrapes and exasperation that would lead them to Park City, Utah, for the International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation North American Cup. The first steps of their journey was a gauntlet of tryouts and selection beginning with an open combine. From there, standout athletes were invited to rookie camp and then push championships in Lake Placid, New York.

Then, both Lynch and Walsh were invited to national team trials to continue to the next phase -- competition.

“It relates pretty closely to the job because there’s days where you know it’s going to be tough,” said Walsh. “Every workout, every time I’m in the garage with the team, every step I take is either taking me closer or further away from my goal. If I’m lazy and I decide to slack one day … that workout may mean the difference between me making the

Both Airmen attribute their time in AFSOC to their success on their bobsled journey. Walsh is a member of Air Force special tactics, which is a special operations ground force comprised of highly trained Airmen who solve air to ground problems across the spectrum of conflict and crisis.

For Lynch, the team mentality of a fourman bobsled loosely correlates to responsibilities of piloting an aircraft. The U-28A aircraft Lynch flies provides an on-call capability for improved tactical airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of special operations forces.

“In AFSOC, I am responsible for the aircraft, the men and the women on that aircraft and ensuring the mission is executed properly, safely and precisely,” said Lynch.

“Things aren’t going to get handed to you – conditions are going to suck, you’re going to get your crap punched in, but you’re going to have to have the strength and resiliency to drive through it and press forward.”

As active-duty Airmen, both Lynch and Walsh have had to negotiate service commitments with leadership support. Both have been granted permissive temporary duty by their respective commanders to vie for a chance at being accepted into the Air Force World Class Athlete Program.

WCAP provides active duty, National Guard and reserve service members the opportunity to train and compete at national and international sports competitions with the ultimate goal of selection to the U.S. Olympic team while maintaining a professional military career.

“I wouldn’t be here without my squadron and group commanders taking a chance on me and giving me a shot,” said Walsh. “It makes me want to do really well to represent my country, the Air Force and AFSOC in a good light.”

AFCENT band builds relationships with a universal language

By Senior Airman Travis Beihl | U.S. AIR FORCES CENTRAL COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar (AFNS) — The U.S. Air Forces Central Command band is the only deployed band in the Air Force, covering 17 of the 20 countries in the area of responsibility. Some places are so remote that the locals have never experienced live music.

Capt. Dustin Doyle, AFCENT band officer in charge, is the orchestrator for this one-of-a-kind band. His duty: promote and educate the band’s mission and coordinate with local officials and embassies to find venues for the band to perform.

“Our mission is to assist the AFCENT commander create positive ways for our two cultures to engage and develop relationships on behalf of the U.S. Air Force and the United States of America,” said Doyle. “We can become the tip of the spear, using soft power, to engage with music. This allows us to enhance U.S. Central Command’s theater security cooperation efforts and ultimately provides the band with more future engagements.”

With performances ranging from playing for dignitaries to children and community elders, these expert musicians take each performance seriously. The number of gigs the AFCENT band plays within their 3-month tour rivals what the stateside Air Force bands would play in a whole year.

“On average, the AFCENT band performs 45 times during their 3-month tour; roughly a concert every-other-day,” said Doyle. “This mission has a very high operations tempo compared to bands in the states. We seldom practice because, just like every other job in the Air Force, once your boots hit the ground we are tasking you to perform.”

The multitude of performances couldn’t happen without the thousands of pounds of music equipment that needs to be packed specifically for each concert. However, unlike back home, these Airmen musicians move virtually everything themselves.

“We have over 5,000 lbs of equipment we have to lug to each performance,” said Master Sgt. Christopher Stahl, AFCENT band superintendent. “We load them onto custom built pallets, built to specifications noted by the airframe’s loadmasters, for every trip we take. Once we land, we unload, set up, break down and pack up everything for the next gig.

Compared to the states, it’s the same process except with fewer people, rehearsal and prep time and rest between performances.”

The U.S. Air Force has used music for decades as an effective diplomatic tool. Music, in and of itself, has an innate

quality to exist without language barriers and bring people together despite vast differences.

“Back in 2013, we had several gigs in an area in Kyrgyzstan where a large portion of the population was illiterate,” said Doyle. “We worked with the U.S. Embassy to engage with several small villages and inform them about their culture and heritage and share U.S. culture and heritage through music and picture handouts. Even with the language barrier, we used music as a unique way to bridge cultures and

develop relationships in an otherwise tough environment.”

“I’m proud of what we do and I’m humbled to work with musicians and Airmen of such quality on so many levels,” said Doyle. “We go to places with people who have never seen or interacted with Americans and we leave lasting impressions of that they think about the U.S. Air Force. Not only that, we also represent the professionalism of our Airmen. It’s humbling to be entrusted with such a high honor.”

Air Force Academy cadets have role in creating DoD’s 1st large stealth target drone

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFNS) — Cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy are working with aerospace instructors and industry partners to develop the Defense Department’s first large stealth target drone to test missile tracking systems.

“As far as we know, this is the first large stealth target drone,” said Thomas McLaughlin, the Academy’s Aeronautic Research Center director.

McLaughlin said the project is the DoD’s first aircraft development with significant contributions by cadets at a service academy.

“It has had cadet involvement in its evolution over several years,” McLaughlin said.

“It’s quite rare that a student design has evolved to the point of potential inventory use.”

members who have worked to perfect the drone’s physical design for more than a decade. Brandt teaches aircraft design and is on the team of government and industry experts overseeing contractor work on the project.

“For the first five years, we just did design studies,” Brandt said. “Finally, in the fall of 2007, we said ”let’s build an aircraft.”

Cadets and faculty have worked on the drone’s design since 2008 as part of that government industry team. The current version is 40 feet long, with a 24-foot wingspan and 9-foot-high vertical tails.

“It’s the size of a T-38 trainer aircraft,” Brandt said, referring to the Northrop T-38 Talon, a two-seat, twin-jet supersonic jet trainer. “[The target drone] uses two T-38 Trainer engines. We explored multiple options to refine its shape and helped eliminate designs that were not as good.”

McLaughlin said the project is important because of its implications in the national defense arena.

“The government owns the intellectual property rights, which makes for substantially reduced production and sustainment costs down the road,” he said.

Geerinck is one of three cadets on the project this year. He’s been testing the flight stability of the target drone in the Academy’s wind tunnel.

“We’re trying to find a combination of flight-control inputs that will always cause the aircraft to enter a backflip that will cause it to crash,” he said. “The system is important because it allows us to prevent injury or damage to other people or persons on the ground in case there is a catastrophic failure or loss of control.”

McLaughlin said cadets will stay involved in the development of the prototype through its initial flight test and beyond, should it go into production.

“The entire project is the validation of the Academy’s emphasis on putting real-world problems before cadets and expecting them to make real contributions to Air Force engineering,” he said. “In the Aeronautics Department, all cadets perform research and aircraft design—it’s not just for top students.”

Cadets don’t just learn about engineering at the Academy, “they perform it,” McLaughlin said.

“They put their heart and soul into their efforts, knowing that an external customer cares about the outcome of their work,” he said. “Our research program relies on a high level of mentorship that is as much about role modeling as it is about learning facts.”

Brandt said the government-industry team plans to demonstrate the target drone in September at the Army’s Dugway Proving Ground near Salt Lake City. Depending on the results of that demo, the Defense Department could purchase the design or select it for prototyping.

Hanscom lays groundwork for comms at Tyndall

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. — Hanscom is supporting Air Combat Command in their reconstruction of Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, following a direct hit by Category 4 Hurricane Michael in October.

Program managers in the Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence and Networks Directorate here are exercising every one of the words in their five-word title by reconstituting a communications network almost totally wiped out by winds, flooding and infrastructure damage. First responders have set up interval communications systems relying on a few existing nodes, coupled with generator-powered satellite truck systems. The Air Force’s long-term goal is to build an organic communication infrastructure from scratch using an as-a-service model.

“Once we award a contract, everything from the Air Force laptops and mobile devices users are issued to the intranet, to on-base servers, to secured communications systems, to the communications node linking the base to external internet and networks will be provided by a single vendor,” said Lt. Col. Bradley Panton, who is spearheading the contracting effort for Tyndall’s replacement communications network.

“This is a similar as-a-service effort to what we’re setting up at other bases, but Tyndall is unique because it will be, in nearly every sense, new from the ground up. Almost everything except the in-ground fiber optic infrastructure will be replaced. Everything replaced will be as-a-service.”

C3I&N has led Air Force efforts to establish as-a-service contracts for portions of the Air Force communications ecosystem, but these experiments are in the early stages. It is possible Tyndall will be fully up and running before the division completes a separate effort to test two private contractors’ as-a-service networks for multiple bases of varying sizes and mission sets.

“Seeing the damage and devastation at Tyndall was an emotional event for me,” said Maj. Temesha Christensen, Air Combat Command’s Tyndall recovery IT functional and operational lead, assigned to Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

“I was actually assigned to Tyndall during Hurricane Katrina.

We were tasked to provide recovery support to civilian agencies during that time, so to see a hurricane inflict this level of damage again is terrible. However, ACC is working with the program office at Hanscom to establish a communications infrastructure that is resilient, and we’re currently delivering the communications needed during recovery.”

Air Force Life Cycle Management Center is responding to Gen. Mike Holmes’ declaration of an “urgent need” for recovery at Tyndall, where many buildings and infrastructures were either totally destroyed, or unusable. Despite that damage, Airmen worked fast to salvage useable communications equipment, or bring in emergency equipment to get communications up to aid physical recovery efforts.

“We’ve traveled down there once already with Maj. Christensen, and will go down again soon,” said Panton.

“This is a long-term effort and what we want to see is not just a replacement of the past system, but a total modernization of the entire network in order to provide reliable, secure and adaptive service, which will grow as more infrastructures and missions return to Tyndall. We’re here for the long haul.”

Panton said he expects the contract to be in place in a matter of months and physical work to begin in early 2019.

Mosier | 386TH AIR EXPEDITIONARY WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) — Members of the 386th Expeditionary Wing dental team were given a unique opportunity to join forces with the Army veterinary clinic to provide support to the K-9 unit at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia, Dec. 8.

In most instances in a deployed environment the medical group supports the vet by providing medications and food related support, but on this day it was to perform a teeth cleaning on Military Working Dog Vviking.

“I am very grateful to do this out here,” said Staff Sgt. Torri Olivieri, 386th Expeditionary Medical Group dental services noncommissioned officer in charge. “Working with a military working dog and supporting the mission in this aspect is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

In a deployed location, the veterinary clinic leans heavily on the medical group in emergencies to support the K-9 unit if the veterinary clinic is unavailable.

“I called the dental tech and dentist down here today so they could get hands-on experience with the MWD, because if there is an emergent situation they would be the ones taking care of the dog,” said Army Spc. Caitlin Hinds, 719th Medical Detachment Veterinary Services vet technician.

While the veterinary clinic is a role three facility, which means they are able to support

a majority of surgeries, they aren’t specifically trained to perform routine cleanings.

The vet clinic takes the opportunity to invite both medical clinic staff and dog handlers to many routine visits, such as blood draws and check-ups, to ensure they have the knowledge and are comfortable to do these things if they are unavailable, Hinds explained.

Staff Sgt. Angelina Borges, 386th Expeditionary Medical Group military working dog handler, discussed an incident earlier this year when her partner, MWD Vviking, was having issues lying down and sitting and the vet was there to help her every step of the way to help improve his health.

“I am really thankful for the vet clinic here and how they have explained everything to me,” Borges said.

The trust and willingness to accommodate one another has really bolstered the partnership between the Army and Air Force and Hinds looks to keep improving that relationship.

“I can go to the kennel master and medical group and say, ‘I need this,’ and they are more than willing to help,” Hinds explained. “It makes me feel good, because I am building the bonds back.”

The cohesiveness between units at ‘The Rock’ stems from these bonds and has developed with trust and partnership with one goal in mind— to complete the mission.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Following the damage to Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, caused by Hurricane Michael, the Air Force is recommending that Congress use supplemental funding for rebuilding the base to prepare to receive the F-35 Lightning II fighter at the north Florida installation.

The Air Force has done a preliminary evaluation to confirm Tyndall AFB can accommodate up to three F-35 squadrons. The operational F-22 Raptors formerly at Tyndall AFB can also be accommodated at other operational bases increasing the squadron size from 21 to 24 assigned aircraft.

If this decision is approved and supplemental funds to rebuild the base are appropriated, F-35s could be based at Tyndall AFB beginning in 2023. Basing already announced in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin will not be affected by this decision.

"We have recommended that the best path forward to increase readiness and use money wisely is to consolidate the operational F-22s formerly at Tyndall in Alaska, Hawaii and Virginia, and make the decision now to put the next three squadrons of F-35s beyond those for which we have already made decisions at Tyndall," said Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson.

"We are talking with Congressional leaders about this plan and will need their help with the supplemental funding needed to restore the base," she added.

On Oct. 10, Hurricane Michael tore through the gulf coast causing catastrophic damage to the region and damaging 95 percent of the buildings at Tyndall AFB. The base's hangars and flight operations buildings suffered some of the greatest damage from the storm passing directly overhead.

Before the storm, Tyndall AFB was home to the 325th Fighter Wing--comprised of two F-22 squadrons. One was operational and one was training. The base also hosts the 1st Air Force, the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group, and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center.

More than 2,000 personnel have since re-

turned to the base and the Air Force intends to keep the testing, air operations center, and civil engineer missions at Tyndall AFB. The recommendation announced today only affects the operational fighter flying mission at the base.

On Oct. 25, Vice President Mike Pence assessed the damage to the base and reassured Florida's panhandle community of the base's importance to the nation.

"We will rebuild Tyndall Air Force Base," Pence said.

Tyndall AFB's access to 130,000 square miles of airspace over the Gulf of Mexico is very valuable for military training.

"We have been given a chance to use this current challenge as an opportunity to further improve our lethality and readiness in support of the National Defense Strategy," said Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein.

The move would provide benefits across the service's fifth generation fighter operations. Basing F-35s at Tyndall AFB in the wake of hurricane damage allows the Air Force to use recovery funds to re-build the base in a tailored way to accommodate the unique needs of the F-35.

The Air Force will conduct a formal process to determine the best location for the F-22 training squadron currently displaced to Eglin AFB, Florida.

The consolidation will drive efficiencies which Air Force officials expect to increase the F-22's readiness rate and address key recommendations from a recent Government Accountability Office report that identified small unit size as one of the challenges with F-22 readiness.

"The F-35 is a game-changer with its unprecedented combination of lethality, survivability, and adaptability," Goldfein said. "Bringing this new mission to Tyndall ensures that the U.S Air Force is ready to dominate in any conflict."

The Air Force will comply with the National Environmental Policy Act and other regulatory and planning processes.

B-21 Raider program holds weapons system critical design review

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Air Force successfully held a critical design review of the B-21 weapon system November 28-30, 2018. The event served as a multi-disciplined technical review that ensured the Air Force’s newest bomber has a stable and mature design as the program moves forward into manufacturing and flight test.

According to Air Force leadership, the review highlights the significant progress that has been made on the B-21 since the engineering and manufacturing development phase began nearly three years ago.

“The Air Force is pleased with how the program is moving forward,” said Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson. “The B-21 Raider program is on the right track to make continued progress over the next few years as it now transitions from the design phase into a robust manufacturing phase that will ultimately produce our first B-21 test aircraft.”

The B-21 Program is run by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, and its program executive officer, Mr. Randall Walden, is confident in the B-21's path forward.

“This critical design event is key to maturing the design of the new bomber and to identifying risks that are consistent with all large acquisition programs across the DOD,” said Walden. “We are excited about where the program is today and we’re looking ahead to actively manage the program to first flight.”

When Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Stephen Wilson was recently asked about why the AFRCO is leading the B-21 program, he explained, “First and foremost, it starts out with culture, because they are the organization whose culture is: I’ve got to deliver capability at the speed of relevance. It (AFRCO) works for pretty much every type of program that we can do. The B-21 is being run out of the AFRCO and it’s going really well.”

The B-21 bomber is a long range, highly survivable aircraft capable of penetrating and operating in future anti-access, area denial environments. The B-21 is expected to begin delivering initial capability in the mid-2020s.
