Peterson First Sergeants tackle suicide

By Airman 1st Class Alexus Wilcox | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Peterson AFB First Sergeants partnered with Pikes Peak Suicide Prevention organizations to host the “Call 4 Action: ’Lean on me‘” event on base Nov. 17, 2020.

The purpose of this event was to provide strategies to navigate situations when someone may be suicidal or in distress, as well as educate people on how to build connections with others to minimize disconnected feelings.

Chief Master Sgt. Robert Rogers, Joint Intelligence Operation Center, senior enlisted advisor, at Fort Worth, Texas and author of “Paperback Mentor” was at the forefront of the event. Rogers began his presentation with a recount of his personal battle with suicide and then led a discussion about connecting with people in all aspects of life.

“What makes you different, makes a difference,” said Rogers. He also emphasized the importance of being mindful of the diverse set of individuals that surround you and how you should make an attempt to understand them. The senior leader then provided some tools to maintain a healthy life using a strategy called the “Three Chamber Hour Glass,” which is illustrated in his book. This is the balance between family, career and self.

“Our Airmen need to see that it is not just them struggling,” said Senior Master Sgt. Shawn Canole, Space Delta 2 First Sergeant. “It is Airmen of all ranks that struggle with mental health and it’s okay to take a knee and get the help they need.”

Canole also introduced the attendees to the First

Sergeant initiative, “Who’s your person? Here’s your dog tag.”

The program provides a military member with a dog tag with their contact information to give to an individual (military member or not) to signify that they can contact you when times get tough.

“This [“dog tag”] gesture symbolizes that they are someone you trust and talk to in a dark moment or during a tough time in your life,” said Canole.

The final leg of the event was a four-hour portion called “Safe Talks.” During this time attendees were separated into two groups and they were given crisis scenarios to discuss how they would engage the issue.

“They learned how to prevent suicide by recognizing signs, engaging someone and connecting them to an intervention resource for further support,” Canole said.

Safe Talk provided attendees with useful strategies to overcome a crisis they may not have been exposed to before and taught them how they may have managed a past crisis differently. “[In the given scenarios], they’re giving you real experiences that are relatable, and tools that I can use as an assistant First Sergeant for my Airmen in a crisis,” said Tech Sgt. Jesus Gonzalez, 21st Security Forces Squadron, Assistant First Sergeant. “I can also pass down the information I learned [at the event] to other leaders.”

Department of the Air Force moves Physical Fitness Assessments to April 2021, permanently removes waist measurement from composite score

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Department of the Air Force announced physical fitness assessments will now resume April 2021 and will no longer include the waist measurement component.

To ensure social distancing practices remain in place during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and to give Airmen and Space Professionals time to prepare, testing was delayed from October to January and is now further delayed to April.

While the waist measurement is permanently removed from the assessment, height and weight measurements will resume October 2021.

“We trust that our Airmen understand the standard of good physical health practices and we are all finding innovative ways to stay fit,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. “We also trust that leaders will take the appropriate steps to keep their Airmen safe while making every effort to provide fitness options during the pandemic.”

Fitness assessment cells, fitness center staff, physical training leaders and members performing fitness assessments will adhere to physical distancing protocols and other local precautions as determined by installation commanders once assessments resume.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex M. Azar II said that key officials with Operation Warp Speed report that 20 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine could be distributed this month.

Azar was joined for a media briefing by Army Gen. Gustave F. Perna, chief operating officer of OWS, and Dr. Moncef Slaoui, chief advisor to OWS. ''We are planning to be ready when [an emergency-use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration] is approved; and when the EUA decision comes [through], distribution to the American people becomes immediate within 24 hours. That's our goal. That's what we're striving for,'' Perna said.

According to published reports, the drug maker Moderna announced encouraging results from a study of its COVID-19 vaccine on Nov. 30, noting that complete data from the large-scale study showed its COVID-19 vaccine to be 94.1% effective. The drug manufacturer said it has applied to the FDA to authorize the vaccine for emergency use, while two other companies also have filed emergency-use authorization applications with the FDA. ''On top of that, more OWS-supported candidates are well on their way in that final phase of clinical trials,'' Azar said. ''[The] FDA has scheduled a meeting of its vaccine advisory committee to review the Moderna vaccine on December 17 following their meeting on the Pfizer vaccine on December 10. We also learned this morning that the United Kingdom has granted authorization to the Pfizer vaccine,'' he added.

If all goes well, the secretary said, OWS can make its first shipments of the vaccine to states this month. ''Of course, we're all eager to have enough supply to vaccinate every American who wants it. And because of Operation Warp Speed, we expect to be at that point in the spring,'' Azar said.

Having substantial quantities of a safe and effective vaccine that's been authorized by FDA before the end of the year is a remarkable achievement, the secretary said, adding that the vaccine will start saving lives very soon. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory committee on immunization practices has issued recommendations to OWS leadership on how vaccines can be effectively and equitably distributed.

These recommendations will now be used by states to develop the best prioritization system for their residents, Azar said. ''As we approach the vaccine rollout, we're also continuing to expand access to treatments for COVID-19,'' he said, adding that, as of this week, OWS has distributed more than 157,000 patient courses of two authorized antibody products across the United States and allocated a total of 205,000 courses for delivery to states.

OWS wants to encourage all Americans to spread the word about the availability of COVID-19 treatments, Azar said. ''Vaccines will only bring this pandemic to an end if enough Americans choose to take these vaccines. We now have highly promising efficacy data that I believe many Americans are encouraged by and excited about.''

Azar also pleaded with those who have recovered from COVID-19 within the last three months to donate plasma. ''We need you to donate plasma,'' he said, noting that more than a quarter-million courses of convalescent plasma have been used on Americans to help prevent severe consequences from the deadly virus. He encouraged potential plasma donors to contact their local American Red Cross or blood bank or go to coronavirus.gov for more information.

AISES award winner expresses passion for her culture

By Airman Ryan Prince | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Master Sgt. Frances Dupris, Space Delta 7 operations superintendent, earned the 2020 American Indian Science and Engineering Society Blazing Flame Award on Oct. 17.

“The Blazing Flame Award is presented to an individual who blazes a path for Native Americans in STEM careers. This award recognizes individuals with 10+ years of professional experience with significant accomplishments in advancing STEM education and careers. The nominee may or may not have a technical background,”-according to the AISES website.

Dupris stood up Colorado Spring’s first National Security Agency K-12 Academic Outreach program by partnering with Colorado Military Academy for a 5-year educational agreement. The STEM and cryptologic-focused student program advances STEM field and career education. Dupris also led other vetted military members through interactive STEM talks in multiple classrooms.

Her efforts were deemed impactful in advancing the STEM career field, and in-turn, she was recognized with the Blazing Flame Award.

“There’s not a large percentage of minorities in STEM, to include Native Americans, which is an even smaller demographic,” said Dupris. “As a Native American, I continuously support Indigenous students and professionals, on their future endeavors.”

Dupris said she is passionate when it comes to spreading awareness about Native American and Alaskan Native culture, which is why winning this

award meant so much to her.

Recently, the 70th ISR Wing Diversity & Inclusion team hosted a Native American Heritage Month virtual panel. Dupris orchestrated this event by reaching out to individuals, who identify as American Indian / Alaska Native, on social media platforms – asking if they would take part on the panel, retaining a moderator for the event, and providing a list of suggested questions.

“The panel included veterans and active duty personnel. The questions asked ranged from their input on why Diversity & Inclusion is important, their perspective on Indigenous Leadership, and the panelists shared some of their culture and spoke in their Native language” said Dupris.

The pre-recorded panel will be viewable on the 70th ISRW Diversity Facebook page on a future date.

Dupris said she’s been involved in Native American Heritage Month and the cultural events in the 19 years she’s been in the Air Force and has no plan to stop being an ambassador for the Native American community.

“I feel it's my duty to continue that throughout my career,” she said. “Whenever I retire, I will still take part in [these type of] events and help mentor those who are coming up after me.”

Faces of Space – TSgt Ana Afonso

Longfellow | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Born in Galveston, Texas, and the second in her family to serve in the U.S. military, the non-commissioned officer-incharge of the plans division in Space Delta 2 decided to join the U.S. Air Force in 2011 and later re-enlisted into the U.S. Space Force earlier this year.

Tech. Sgt. Ana Afonso, who spent some of her growing up years at her mother’s home in the Philippines, explained she didn’t know who she was, but knew she couldn’t figure it out on a small island.

“I wanted to see the rest of the world and travel,” Afonso said. “Metaphorically speaking, I wanted to live my life beyond the water’s horizon.”

Afonso’s hero and father, Anthony Afonso, served in the U.S. Navy as a ship serviceman. He was the equivalent to a services member in the Air Force.

“In his junior years, he was known for being the best barber,” Afonso said.

Her dad was recently diagnosed with vascular dementia after a stroke, and while he is still fighting against the odds, for the past year he has been losing his memory.

“It has been difficult,” Afonso said. “Sometimes we have breakthroughs where he remembers me, but most of the time he doesn’t. I am definitely my father’s daughter though, and my dad is a strong and intelligent person. I just want to be like him and make him proud.”

Following in her father’s footsteps, Afonso decided to join the military, but not the Navy.

“I never learned how to swim despite living near

water my whole life,” she added with a laugh.

As the enlisted manager of the Space Delta 2 plans division, she oversees and coordinates the moving parts of the growing Space Delta, from activating new squadrons to upgrading current weapon systems.

“Every day I attend meetings with high-level space professionals and system engineers, all for the sake of space superiority,” Alfonso said. “My team is always asking, ‘What’s next?’, because [USSF] has just begun.”

Space Delta 2 prepares and presents assigned and attached forces for the purpose of executing combatready Space Domain Awareness operations to deter aggression and, if necessary, fight to protect and defend the U.S. and our allies from attack in, through and from space.

“I am part of the Space Delta charged with maintaining Space Domain Awareness, ensuring that our warfighters have a clear picture of the battlefield,” she said. “Our nation’s leaders are asking for the bigger picture and I’m someone charged with providing that.”

Alfonso said she never expected to invest so much of her life into space, but she couldn’t have done it without the support of her mentor, Senior Master Sgt. Juan Lopez, 4th Space Warning Squadron administrative superintendent, whom she met at her first duty station, Buckley AFB, Colorado.

“He has helped me grow into the person and leader that I am today,” Afonso said. “He taught me the hardest lessons in life and made me realize how strong I truly am.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The holidays can be challenging financially under normal circumstances but this year brings unique issues members need to consider and plan for now to mitigate.

Since September, many military and civilian employees have received slightly larger paychecks due to the Presidential Memorandum temporarily deferring Social Security Tax withholdings. That reprieve is scheduled to come to an end as the year does potentially impacting pay checks as holiday bills come due.

Per IRS guidance, collection of the deferred taxes will be taken from member’s wages between January 1 and April 30, 2021 for both military members and civilian employees.

While the details on how the taxes will be recouped is forthcoming, members should plan for not only the 6.2% Social Security tax to be withheld but also an additional 6.2% to pay back the deferred taxes.

“I suggest individuals look back at their August LES since this is the last month that reflects the 6.2% tax being withdrawn and then double that amount to get an estimate of the monthly total,” said Lenea Lance, Schriever Airman and Family Readiness Center Personal Financial Readiness Manager.

To put this into perspective, when comparing today's base pay checks where the Social Security Tax is not being withheld, the potential impact could range from about $215 a month for an E1 with less than two years of service to more than $1,000 a month for those whose base pay approaches the deferment limit of $8666.66.

She advises members to plan for the end of the tax deferral to minimize its impact.

“I cannot stress enough to be proactive. Take action now, assess where you are, what you need and what do you expect to happen or need over the next 6 months. What additional expenses may arise during this time– auto registration, auto maintenance, education expenses, holidays/birthdays, etc.,” she said.

She said there are several options to consider to help reduce one’s financial strain.

“They can schedule an appointment with me at A&FRC to help them look at options based on their needs such as contacting lenders to discuss payment plans, reduce variable expenses such as eating out, quick stops, groceries, clothing purchases, etc., or cancelling unused subscriptions (movies, gaming, music, etc.),” said Lance. “Obtaining auto insurance quotes to find best rates or ensuring military discounts are included on utility bills are other options.”

Through the A&FRC, members can make a thorough assessment of their situations and determine the best courses of action.

“What I have found is that when there is a need, it is just the surface of a much larger need. I try to ensure that all avenues and resources are provided to the individuals to get after the underlying issues,” said Lance.

There are several resources both on base and in the community to benefit members in this process.

“Individuals may need more than one resource – Military Family Life Counselor, Chaplain, finance or the Air Force Aid Society (other military services have their own) are just a few,” she said.

A&FRC will help members navigate the traditional resources available as well as highlight COVID-specific options.

“During this time, resources vary based on need. I would recommend individuals contact their lenders to discuss options available,” she said.

“COVID resources are constantly changing. Some programs may be ending such as student loan deferment, yet others could be extended. It is important to look at programs and what is available currently.”

New Parent Support Program offers comfort to parents

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Medical Readiness Flight Family Advocacy Program offers assistance to expecting and new parents through their New Parent Support Program.

“Our mission is to make sure our folks on base are getting the support they need,” said 1st Lt. Ryan Barney, 21st Operational Medical Readiness flight FAP officer and New Parent Support Program supervisor. “When it comes to expecting a baby, it's always stressful.

We want to make sure families have the resources and support that they need to ultimately prevent any sort of maltreatment.”

The program is free and offered to anyone with a valid ID card who has access to the clinic.

The program also offers lactation, nutrition and stress management classes. Additionally, it provides guidance on how parents can better bond with their children. “[We’re] going to give parents the necessary skills, information and tools to go through their pregnancies and deliveries,” said Betina Hicks, New Parent Support Program nurse manager.

Children must be under the age of three for parents to qualify for the program. The parents can be adoptive, foster or biological.

“If you feel like you're being supported, have resources and you have people you can turn to [for] the help that you need - that risk is really mitigated,” Barney said.

Despite the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the New Parent Support Program is still operating. In order to protect the health and wellness of its employees and customers, they’ve begun doing appointments over the phone or virtually.

“Do not be afraid of family advocacy,” Hicks said. “Reach out. You can get so many new tools for your toolbox to be a better person, parent or partner.”

Space Cockpit a new way to visualize space operations

On Nov. 11, the United States Space Force surpassed another milestone when it marked the one-year operational anniversary of the Space Cockpit.

Space Cockpit is a situational awareness tool that allows satellite operators to visualize the satellites they control in a real-time, video game-like application. Originally commercial software, 1st Lieutenants Tory Smith and Jacqueline Cromer, Space Commercially Augmented Mission Platform (Space CAMP) software development leads, along with their product development team, spent months developing the software for Space Force professional’s use.

“Through their unique digital acumen and innovative thinking, Lieutenants Cromer and Smith set the gold standard for organic space software development,” said Maj. Gen. Kimberly Crider, USSF Chief Technology and Innovation Officer. “They exemplify the type of forward-leaning professionals we need to maintain our competitive advantage in the highly competitive and contested space domain.”

Initial roll out to the field began Nov. 11, 2019 to space professionals at Delta 4, offering an intuitive space domain visualization application to space operators that is updateable and customizable depending on the unique needs of the tactical user.

“It uses real, live location data for the satellites and simulates them in the application scene,” said Cromer.

“Operators can then go into the application to see where in space their satellites are, as well as quickly perform some actions in the application to see what other objects are around them and if there are threatening situations.”

Space Cockpit is a situational awareness tool that allows satellite operators to visualize the satellites they control in a real-time, video game-like application. that provides assured access to space through the $6.8 billion Air Force Satellite Control Network and defensive cyberspace capabilities for space mission systems, it has continued to evolve.

“Since then, development has continued to expand features to meet the needs of the Delta 4 operators.

Additionally, it was introduced to other space operation groups enterprise-wide,” said Smith.

The original version, dubbed The Predictive Interactive Groundstation Interface (PIGI), was introduced to the Department of the Air Force during a demonstration at Buckley AFB, Col. in 2019.

“After the successful demonstration, the project entered Phase II, which called for further development of the software for military use[which was]renamed Space

Cockpit,” said Smith.

During Phase II, the two lieutenants redeveloped the commercial software into something the USSF could use in daily space operations.

“Development began at Space CAMP in Colorado Springs in May 2019 taking some assets of PIGI, but with most of the work starting from the ground up following a user center design philosophy and adhering to DevSecOps (development, security and operations) methodologies,” said Cromer.

Space CAMP is just one of many projects the U.S. Space Force has worked on with their private sector partners to further pursue the building of new acquisition authorities, enabling the Space Force to streamline requirements and outpace its adversaries.

Commanders may delay official fitness assessments beyond April 2021 if necessary, based on the recommendation of local public health officials, the continuation of closed fitness centers and extended state-wide restriction of movement and gatherings.

Space Professionals will adhere to the physical fitness policy of the Department of the Air Force.

Airmen and Space Professionals may determine their next fitness assessment due date by visiting the Official Physical Assessment Due Date Matrix on myPers which will be updated and available Dec. 8. Fitness assessment due dates will primarily depend on the date and score of the last official test.

“Originally, we hoped to resume testing by January 2021,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass.

“However, based on the number of cases nationwide, the right thing to do is focus on keeping our Airmen and their families safe. Delaying and reevaluating the PT test is the best option for our people.”

The test will still consist of a 1.5 mile run, 1 minute of pushups and 1 minute of situps. However, the composite score will be calculated with full points for the waist measurement portion until system changes can be made.

Department leaders are also looking to reevaluate certain testing criteria moving forward.

“Along with removing the waist measurement, we are also exploring alternative strength and cardio components to our current Air Force fitness assessment,” Brown said. “We believe these potential test structure changes will impact Airmen in a positive way and help with a holistic approach to health and fitness standards.”

Lopez continued to explain Afonso has the ability to see individual successes and struggles without invading the privacy of people because of her personality and sincerity to care about them.

“She realizes the power of words and how it can motivate others to be better and build on the strong skillset they already have,” Lopez said. “I want her to keep charging because she has become the leader I want to follow, and she needs to make leaders into others you want to follow.”

Another influential person Afonso met at Buckley AFB is her husband, Matt. Although he is no longer in the military, she says his experience has helped them get through their life together.

“Matt has been my rock throughout most of my military career,” she said. “During the longer days or harder times, he reminds me why I am here and then revives my morale with snacks and sweets.”

Afonso says she can’t thank him enough.

Afonso considers herself an extroverted introvert. Her hobbies are more relaxing than extreme.

She loves landscape and macro photography, along with traveling. She spends her free time with her husband, her Nebelung cat named Kirito, and a Chiweenie named Cori.

“Whether staying indoors or going out, it’s always an adventure,” Alfonso said. “We will look up new recipes to try and even have our own cook-offs. We love sightseeing and exploring new cities, state parks, and festivals (before COVID-19).”

Alfonso says she feels rejuvenated and refreshed after spending quality time with her family.

“I think it is important to balance your home and work life,” Afonso explained. “Your family can help you do just that.”

She said she lives by her favorite Serbian proverb, “Be humble for you are made of earth. Be noble for you are made of stars.”

“It reminds me that I am human and everything doesn’t have to be perfect,” she said. “Another way I would explain this quote is to remember that you are flawed, but your purpose is perfect.”

The technical sergeant looks to her future and is currently working on a psychology degree while pursuing her dream to make it a full 30 years in the USSF. “I’ve always been a prosocial person and wanted to help others,” she said. “But since I’ve been a part of the space community I’ve learned that my actions and efforts and have helped more people than I could imagine.”
