Enlisted Delta 3 Space Control Technician selected for commissioning into Space Force

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — An enlisted space control technician from Delta 3 was chosen as one of two U.S. Space Force selectees for the Senior Leader Enlisted Commissioning Program and was congratulated with a surprise inperson visit by Chief of Space Operations, Gen. John “Jay” Raymond Nov. 23, 2020.

Staff Sgt. Kevin Justice is currently a space control technician assigned to the 4th Space Control Squadron, which is a Space Delta 3 unit in the USSF. With recommendation from Justice’s direct leadership team, Raymond recently selected him to commission through the SLECP. “I was notified originally via a surprise teleconference with the CSO and my leadership team that started as an exercise meeting.” Justice said. “I felt a little suspicious at first, but then it genuinely turned into a real 30 minute meeting. Then Gen. Raymond called-in and told me that I had been selected for SLECP and would be attending Officer Training School.”

“My reaction was instant,” Justice said. “I was having trouble standing and was really nervous and shaky. At first I didn’t know how to respond to Gen. Raymond, but once I recovered I was ecstatic. I have been working on this for a really long time.”

SLECP is a commissioning program which enables senior military leaders to handpick enlisted members to commission through OTS who are highly talented and exhibit exceptional performance and leadership abilities.

The program provides a two-track opportunity – SLECP-A, for enlisted members to pursue their degree full time while on active duty status; and SLECP-O, for Airmen who have already acquired their degree to directly commission through OTS. Justice fell into the SLECP-O category as a result of him earning his Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience while on active duty.

Although there is no board or application needed for SLECP, the selection is still extremely competitive with each U.S. Air Force Major Command selecting only one and the USSF selecting only two candidates for SLECP each cycle.

Combat Divers submerge inside Cheyenne Mountain By 10th Special Forces Group Public Affairs PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — A Special Forces Operations Detachment - Alpha (SFOD-A) with 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) put their combat dive skills to use November 5, 2020 where one would least expect: in the heart of the Cheyenne Mountain Complex.

Inside the complex are three reservoirs that hold water for a variety of uses, including cooling the mountain’s generators and expelled exhaust. Because the mountain is designed to function independently, the water systems are vital to the success of the mountain’s operations.

Assessing the Structural integrity of the reservoirs and ensuring the water is flowing freely through the cave systems that connect them keeps things running smoothly.

“They originally contracted with a civilian company to get this done,” says the Officer in Charge of the Dive LIfe Support Maintenance Facility at 10th SFG (A). “My brother, an Air Force Logistical Officer tasked to the Space Force, recommended they get in contact with (us) to do it for free.”

The facility manager of the complex and the DLSMF and a chosen combat dive SFOD-A set out to accomplish the mission.

“Dive operations don’t happen very often in special forces,” says the OIC. “This was a good chance for us to go out and showcase our capabilities as a legitimate maritime force within (Special Operations Command) to actually do a real world mission. It’s not infiltrating into enemy country or territory, but it was a chance for us to show everyone that we do have this capability and it’s important to keep the capability within the Special Forces community.”

FG (A) to establish and develop relationships outside of the Army and Special Operations Command. It started a relationship with the Cheyenne Mountain complex to provide future opportunities for real world missions, training and equipment testing. These relationships are essential to interoperability within different branches of the military enhancing our overall capabilities as one united force.

The Omaha Trophy, which dates to the U.S. Air Force’s Strategic Air Command, was originally created by the Strategic Air Command Consultation Committee in 1971.

At the time, a single trophy was presented annually as a token of appreciation to the command’s best wing. The SCC – an advisory group comprising business leaders in the Omaha area – became the Strategic Command Consultation Committee after the activation of USSTRATCOM in 1992.

WASHINGTON, (AFNS) — Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett addressed the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics during the first virtual Accelerating Space Commerce, Exploration, and New Discovery (ASCEND) event, on the importance of the newest service in the Department of Defense, Nov. 16.

Throughout her discussion, Barrett emphasized the vital role the United States Space Force plays in shaping the future of international space operations.

“The most important thing for the Space Force and the Air Force is working with allies and partners,” Barrett said. “So we've been teaming up. It's not an exclusively American mission. It's the world’s mission to encourage and ensure the future a free and open access to space, so that elements of space are not put off-limits to others.”

Instrumental to molding the first new military service since 1947, Barrett shared some insight on how the U.S. Air Force Academy has evolved to help build strong foundations for the next generation of USSF officers.

“At the Air Force Academy, we believe that in the field of Astronautics you learn space by doing space,” said Barrett. “So the Air Force Academy Cadets are building spacecraft. They're building satellites. And, they're putting them on the X-37B. In May, we launched an Air Force Academy cadet-built satellite into space. “ Barrett also noted that USAFA recently started a Space Operations degree program, which will further enable building depth in space expertise.

On current operations, Secretary Barrett highlighted the role the service has on lives throughout the world.

“In our everyday life, we're using space constantly, but we often don't recognize [it],” said Barrett. “Just think about the GPS system alone and consider how much we depend upon the system. It's accessible to everyone globally and it takes just 8 to 10 people during a single shift to operate it. So, a total of 40 people operate this extraordinary system upon which so much of our current economy depends.”

Continuing her remarks, Barrett spoke about the vulnerabilities that the 31 satellites currently face and how the USSF is leading the way to not only keep the GPS satellite network available but also to maintain Space as a free and open domain.

“It's broadly used. It's transformative, but it's fragile. And, space debris is really a danger to things like our GPS systems. We've got to minimize their vulnerability. And, we have to have the capability to deter others from doing damage to that system upon which so much depends,” said Barrett. “So, we are building processes and doctrine of what is threatening and what is to be acceptable behavior in space. “ In her closing remarks, the secretary stressed the vital need of a dedicated Space Force.

“A final word, I would simply say we are building the United States Space Force to protect the free and benevolent use of that ultimate frontier, the ultimate high ground—space. Semper Supra,” she concluded.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Space Command's incoming deputy commander was promoted to lieutenant general and officially transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the U.S. Space Force during a ceremony Nov.

23, 2020, at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Lt. Gen. John Shaw will take on duties as the 11th combatant command's deputy starting Nov. 24.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The time of year has come once again where the sun sets early and the weather becomes colder. Airmen and space professionals tend to hide indoors and binge-watching habits take over. This year in particular with COVID-19 restrictions, Airmen find themselves tucked away and isolated with a mysterious danger lurking in the shadows.

Seasonal depression, or winter depression, is more accurately called Seasonal Affective Disorder. It’s a type of depression that is brought on by a biochemical imbalance in the brain prompted by shorter daylight hours and less exposure to sunlight in winter.

“SAD can be distressing and overwhelming and can interfere with daily function,” said Staff Sgt. Melanie Flores, 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron mental health clinic non-commissioned officer-in-charge. “Similar to plants, humans use sunlight to produce vitamin D, increasing our serotonin (happy hormone) levels. As the weather changes and it gets colder, we are less exposed to sunlight than normal which may ultimately lead to lower serotonin levels, affecting our mood and feelings of happiness.”

According to www.psychiatry.org, about five percent of adults in the U.S. experience SAD, and it can last up to 40 percent of the year.

Some things Airmen and space professionals can look out for include feeling tired or lethargic after a full night's rest, feeling down and/or depressed and not understanding why, weight gain or missing the gym a few days in a row because you’re feeling tired or unmotivated, Flores added.

Many of the common symptoms are similar to those of major depression such as feeling down and/or having a depressed mood, a lack of motivation and energy, loss of interest in hobbies, trouble falling/staying asleep or sleeping too much, difficulty concentrating, and changes in appetite.

In more extreme cases, SAD may lead to thoughts about suicide and death. Knowing these signs and symptoms can help to identify if your or someone you are close with may be experiencing SAD. But do not fear, there are ways to combat SAD. Flores suggests practicing good sleep hygiene – going to bed at the same time each night, setting an alarm for the same time every morning, keeping your room dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature and removing electronic devices from the bedroom. Another helpful tip is setting a daily routine and sticking with it. This routine may include time

for exercise, a hobby, and spending time with friends and loved ones. Some treatments for SAD include light therapy, psychotherapy (talk therapy), antidepressants, and taking vitamin D supplements.

“I like comparing mental health to a broken leg,” Flores said. “Though going to the doctor to find out what’s wrong is scary and the treatment may hurt, it’s necessary so that your leg can heal and get stronger – this is the same when it comes to mental health. It may be scary, it’s vulnerable and requires some opening up; but once everything is out there and you’re getting help, it’s all worth it.”

Especially with Coronavirus Burnout and Pandemic Fatigue starting to affect the general population, it’s important to take care of your mental health.

“Although COVID-19 doesn’t cause Seasonal Affective Disorder,” Flores said. “The stress of social distancing guidelines, limited interpersonal interactions, worrying about your health and/or the health of loved ones and more can definitely add to and exacerbate symptoms of it.”

Flores’s top tips for improving your mental health while still maintaining social distancing guidelines and in addition to practicing sleep hygiene include not exceeding your normal caffeine intake, avoiding consuming alcohol and nicotine, exercising regularly, and staying in regular contact with friends and family. It may also help to take time for self-care and finding ways to get together while following social distancing guidelines in your area.

Building digital literacy through Digital University

By Capt. Laura Hayden | AIR COMBAT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. (AFNS) — The Air Force recently launched a program called Digital University to help increase digital literacy, by providing access to free courses from Udemy, Pluralsight and Udacity to all Department of the Air Force Air and Space Professionals.

Digital University strives to fit the needs of all Airmen by providing 100,000 licenses to access more than 12,000 courses.

“ACC (Air Combat Command) is leading the way for our United States Air Force, and we are happy to carry this forward,” said Brig. Gen. Chad Raduege, ACC director of cyberspace and information dominance. “This is a foundation for our force as we move forward into the future.”

According to Lt. Gen. Christopher P. Weggeman, deputy commander of ACC, he knows one size won’t fit all and that all Airmen learn at a different pace, in different ways and each individual's knowledge base varies.

Digital University offers something for everyone, covering subjects such as, leadership, public speaking, conflict management, game development, language learning, computer programing and more.

Chief Master Sgt. Patricia Ford, ACC support functional manager, has already completed a few Digital University courses in Photoshop, Excel Pivot Table and is currently working on her Project Management Professional, or PMP, Certification on the platform.

“I challenge anyone to find anything that they can’t do in Digital University. It’s for the novice, the intermediate and the expert,” Ford said.

Like Ford, Raduege also took Digital University for a test drive, completing courses in resiliency, 5G technologies, and Python programming, finding ways to grow his digital literacy.

Licenses for Pluralsight and Udacity, which offer nano-degrees, are planned to be added when the pilot program wraps up in June 2021.

Weggeman is encouraging all ACC Airmen to participate and discover what Digital University courses are best suited for their unique interests.

“We are asking you to take the lead in the pursuit to build the digital Air Force we need. Every Airmen, regardless of the AFSC, is vitally important to executing the Air Force mission and advancing digital literacy,” Weggeman said. There is hidden talent and untapped potential out there – our job is to seek it out and feed the digital hunger in our Airmen. Lead the way!”

Department of the Air Force restores previous military tuition assistance cap and AF COOL funding Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Department of the Air Force restored military tuition assistance to $4,500 per fiscal year and Air Force Credentialing Opportunities Online preparatory course funding for fiscal year 2021, effective immediately.

The Air Force noted increased usage of tuition assistance since the start of COVID-19 and continuing into the new fiscal year.

“We are excited our members are taking advantage of their time under COVID(-19) to improve themselves and pursue education. The Department of the Air Force was able to reprioritize funding to encourage our service members to maximize their development through these educational benefits,” said Lt. Gen. Brian T. Kelly, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services.

“The Department of the Air Force is committed to education and to the continued professional and personal growth of our Airmen and Space Professionals in support of our nation's defense.”

As a result of the reinstatement, both programs will resume the same benefits as before.

For military tuition assistance, Airmen and Space Professionals are eligible for up to $4,500 per fiscal year and a maximum of $250 per semester hour or quarter hour equivalent to cover tuition and allowable fees. For AF COOL, funding for preparatory courses, also known as boot camps, is restored. AF COOL funding limits remain at $4,500 per life-time.

“Voluntary education and military tuition assistance programs continue to be important to the development of our force,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “I’m glad we were able to take a look at the budget again and allow our Airmen to focus on self-improvement, especially during a time where our world has become increasingly virtual during COVID(-19).”

Additionally, Department of the Air Force officials noted comparing school costs, utilizing other resources such as Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support’s (DANTES) subject standardized tests (DSST), college-level examination programs (CLEP), pursuing Community College of the Air Force degrees and other funding sources, such as scholarships and grants, all help maximize education benefits.

"I am thankful for great leaders who put service members first," said Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, senior enlisted advisor of the United States Space Force. "I couldn't be happier to see us enable the best growth, education, and development possible.”

Justice will find out soon when he is scheduled to depart for Maxwell Air Force Base, and attend OTS. After graduation and earning his gold bars, he will switch career fields from the enlisted 1C6 Space Systems Operations position, to the officer 13S Space Operations career field.

Among his many accolades, Justice proved himself among his peers by leading the one-of-a-kind deployed space control effort in U.S. Africa Command. Justice integrated space with the Joint Special Operations Task Force which ultimately led to the targeting of high priority Violent Extremist Organizations, 500 Enemies-Killed-In-Action, and the rescue of two civilians. With these achievements, Justice was critical to his deployed squadron winning the U.S. Air Force’s Space Crew of the Year Award for 2019.

The 4th SPCS leadership never wants to lose a team member of Justice’s caliber, but they are excited to know he’s off to make a larger impact as a new leader ready to shape the USSF. “I’m extremely excited for Justice’s future as an Officer, although, the Warhawks will surely miss one of our high-impact enlisted leaders,” said Lt. Col. Kara Sartori, Commander, 4th SPCS. “He has done outstanding work for us, training our instructors and tacticians here locally as well as helping out the weapons school to spread the word about our mission. The USSF will certainly benefit by commissioning Justice as an Officer.”

wing, global operations (space/cyberspace) unit and strategic aircraft wing. The trophy’s name is an homage to the Offutt Air Force Base home of USSTRATCOM, south of Omaha, Neb. The 100th Missile Defense Brigade is the only military unit in the Department of Defense tasked with the strategic missile defense of the homeland. In 2019, the brigade proved its capability to defend the homeland and designated areas through a successful flight test launch of two ground-based interceptors, which destroyed their target, a threat-representative ICBM, outside of the earth’s atmosphere.

Also in 2019, the unit provided support to multiple Tier 1 exercises and certified at the highest levels of internal and external evaluations of both 100th Missile Defense Brigade mission essential tasks: defense of the homeland from ICBM attack, and site security of the Missile Defense Complex at Fort Greely.

“This is an outstanding honor,” Hatfield said. “As the chief of the Army says, ‘People first, and winning matters.’ The Soldiers before you, and those who cannot be here today, reflect the interlocked shields of a small group of 300 Spartan warriors who defended their home.

That is really what we do here.

“The interconnected shields are formed by our various missile defense crews at Schriever Air Force Base and Fort Greely, Alaska, the Detachment at Vandenberg Air Force Base [California] and our enterprise of Soldiers, DA civilians, contractors, and access control personnel. Every person has a part of that mission and our success,” Hatfield said.

Wheeler stated that the protection of the nation is the most sacred mission in the DOD and also acknowledged the brigade’s unofficial slogan of 300 Soldiers defending 300 million American citizens.

“That motto says it all,” he said. “To the men and women of the 100th Missile Defense Brigade, thank you for being on the wall and keeping us safe 24/7/365. It is impressive what you do. In the Navy, we call our submarine force the silent service. You represent that same mentality. You do your job without a lot of fanfare, and that is impressive.”

Carter, who was on hand to represent the 24 member Strategic Command Consultation Committee that selects the winners annually, said the Omaha Trophy is reserved for the “best of the best.”

“You should be incredibly proud of what that means when it comes to the global defense and the no-fail mission that you are engaged in,” he said. “It’s named after the largest city in Nebraska, and the name Omaha may not mean anything to you right away.”

“It’s a name that Peyton Manning made famous as a quarterback.

When he yelled the word, 'Omaha,' it was to prepare for action. I like to think that’s who you are,” Carter said. “Every time you go to work and do your job, you must be ready. The American people sleep peacefully every night under the very blanket of freedom that you provide.”
