Barriers to seeking care

Jonathan Eckley | 21ST MEDICAL SQUADRON PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — When our active duty members need medical care, there can be numerous perceived barriers that discourage them from seeking treatment. While folks may be struggling, whether with physical or mental health issues, they may be concerned with the unintended consequences that come with seeking care. Whether it is the space operator concerned with losing their clearance, the security forces Airman wanting to avoid a “Do Not Arm” status or the personnelist who has too much work to leave the office to be seen; the barriers to seeking care sometimes outweigh the desire to be healed. Across the Air Force and the Department of Defense, these perceptions can be one of the contributing factors to some of the highest rates of suicide we have ever had within the service community.

As a patient, I have been there. When I was assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, I worked in Area B and the Medical Group was in Area A. The drive to get

from my office to my doctor was similar to being assigned to Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado and needing to attend an appointment at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. My desire to be present, so my co-workers wouldn’t have to pick up my slack, led to me avoiding care. I went through two significant surgeries in my time there and still managed to be seen less than 15 times in four years. This avoidance to getting much needed care has resulted in significant, long-term issues that will affect me the rest of my life. The lesson learned from this is to not let perceived inconvenience be a barrier in obtaining needed medical care.

So where do we go from here? First, we need to dispel some of the misconceptions people have toward accessing care. For example, while there are no guarantees that seeking mental health care will not impact your clearance, less than 0.5% of members experience any impact; and those that do, the impact is typically related to negative behaviors that may have been avoided with early intervention. Far more common is folks getting care, getting healthy and re-

turning to full duty status with no long-term consequences on their clearance. Secondly, not seeking care due to fear of being away from the office too often can lead to delays that can worsen the medical condition. The better option is to be seen, such as going to physical therapy for a few weeks, and thereby preventing potential issues with your deployability and retainability. Delays in treatment lead to more appointments, more time away from the office, less desirable outcomes, and can cause the member to have to undergo a medical evaluation board. Finally, pride is a significant barrier to seeking care, particularly with higher ranking individuals. The perceived expectation for senior leaders to “have it all together” sometimes deters members from admitting they need help; when in practice, seeking care early helps individuals be more resilient, not only for themselves but also for the people they are charged to lead.

The aim of the Air Force Medical Service is to deliver accessible, safe and quality medical care—what the AFMS calls trusted care. As such, we encourage all members to seek care early and be a proactive participant in their healthcare. This has been shown to increase positive outcomes, allowing more members to return to full service with less long-term impacts on their readiness. EAP HAS NEW WEBSITE, PHONE NUMBER

The Employee Assistance Program has a new phone number and website. The new phone number is 1-866-580-9078 and the new website is www.AFPC.af.mil/EAP. The program will provide the same services and the same access to care provided in the past with continued access 24/7 via telephone, website or in-person.

All Air Force civilian personnel (APF, NAF, Guard and Reserve technicians), and family members will be able to use the program at no charge to the individual or family member. Army personnel stationed at Peterson Air Force base are also covered under the EAP, and need to indicate they are stationed at Peterson AFB when they call to receive services.

HOLIDAY MEALS AVAILABLE AT ARGON DFAC

The Argon Dining Facility is hosting two upcoming holiday meals 11 a.m. — 1 p.m. Nov. 28 and Dec. 25, 2019. These holiday meals are open to anyone with base access. Anyone not enrolled in the meal card program must pay cash. The holiday menus include roast turkey, baked ham or roast rib of beef with a variety of sides and desserts.

The hazardous waste and P2 program manager is offering a quarterly Resource Conservation & Recovery Act training 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Nov. 19 at the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron main conference room in Building 1324. DROP OFF UNUSED MEDICATION ANY TIME

Air Force medical organizations used to have annual “drug takeback days,” but there are now three locations available to members of Team Pete to dispose of unused medications safely. There are boxes that look like blue USPS postal boxes at the Peterson main clinic, the Peterson BX pharmacy and the Schriever Air Force Base main clinic for people to safely dispose of their unused medicaitons.

821st ABG commander visits Canadian Forces Station Alert

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — At the invitation of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Col. Timothy Bos, 821st Air Base Group commander at Thule Air Base, Greenland, visited Canadian Forces Station Alert Oct. 30 2019, to foster the long-standing partnership between CFS Alert and Thule AB, and to learn more about their mission.

While at CFS Alert, the northernmost permanent settlement in the world at 82 degrees north latitude, Bos received a mission overview, toured the facilities, and ate lunch with RCAF Airmen and civilians.

“The partnership between the U.S. at Thule and Canada at CFS Alert goes back to 1956, and is critical for the success of both our missions. We operate in the same harsh Arctic environment, so we face very similar challenges and can

learn a tremendous amount from one another,” Bos said.

“I was amazed at the close-knit family atmosphere at CFS Alert, given that they operate with less than 100 personnel. Everyone on base has two or three different jobs. I also laughed when Alert personnel told me how much they loved staying overnight at, a sprawling Thule AB during their transits to and from Alert.”

Bos was transported to CFS Alert via a RCAF C-130 Operation BOXTOP mission, which provides cargo resupply and personnel movement through Thule AB. BOXTOP is a semi-annual event that occurs in the spring and the fall, depending on the weather. During the operation, more than 100 Canadian Forces inhabit Thule AB for the two-week resupply mission of CFS Alert and Eureka, a town in Nunavut, Canada.

During these missions, crews battle strong winds, low ceilings and visibility, and a slick runway as they make the 440 nautical mile flight north from Thule to Alert. Arctic weather conditions are extremely difficult to predict, and bitter cold temperatures can hinder operations.

Operation BOXTOP began in 1956 and has continued to enable the transport of critical resources to the northernmost inhabited place in the world.

“Thule AB and its personnel take pride in their key role of being the sole supply chain link for Canadian Forces Stations Alert and Eureka,” Bos said. “Additionally, BOXTOP provides Air Force personnel with a unique opportunity to witness joint logistics along with the challenges of operating in the Arctic.”

Construction to begin on new military working dog facility

The current kennels were built in 1981, and the new kennels will use more recent developments in construction to give the dogs a higher quality of life.

By Griffin Swartzell | 21ST SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Military working dogs and their handlers on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, will soon operate out of improved facilities.

Construction of a new security forces kennel, located near the baseball fields, is set to begin in late November.

Master Sgt. Derek Copeland, 21st Security Forces Squadron kennel master, said that this new facility has been in the works for six years. When it’s finished — tentatively scheduled for December of 2020 — it will replace a facility that has housed Peterson’s military working dogs since around 1981.

“It's an old building that we have right now,” said Copeland. “This upgrade will increase the quality of life for the dogs.”

While the current kennel facility was built to specifications when it was initially constructed, new technology and building standards have made it possible to give these working dogs more comfort in their downtime. The new kennels will have a variety of amenities and considerations. They’ll be staggered and have solid walls so the dogs are separate from one another. Each kennel will also include a concrete dog house to give the dogs somewhere dark to rest. They’ll

also have more temperature control than the current facilities, with under-floor heating and air conditioning.

“These dogs work out in the elements during the summer, so if we make it too cool back there, they don't get acclimated properly,” said Copeland. “Typically, we run the kennel within 10 degrees of the operating environment, so that way, they can become properly acclimated.”

The new facility will also be better for the SFS mission and maintaining staffing uptime, both for Airmen and dogs alike. It will include a full veterinary suite for treating dogs

on-site when it’s impractical or non-viable for them to be transported to Fort Carson, Colorado. It will also include expanded office space for SFS Airmen, as well as larger conference and handler rooms, and more equipment storage. Additionally, features like a kitchen, a shower and laundry facilities will allow Airmen to operate 24 hours if needed.

“We don't classify it as us getting an upgrade because we'll work out of anything,” said Copeland. “It's more about the dogs.

They're the ones working more than we are.

So giving them a better quality of life when they're on their downtime is the end goal.”

Carmel is also a collection site for 4KidzSports, a local non-profit that provides gently-used sports gear to help youth advance their lives through their faith and participation in sports, music, the arts, academics, and leadership training. Finally, Mt. Carmel collects non-perishable foods year-round to provide a hand-up to veterans and their families in need.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — According to the thrift savings plan website, all TSP participants must have validated contact information and use two-step authentication to log into the TSP My Account beginning in December 2019.

“It’s a security measure,” says Vic Villarreal, 21st Force Support Squadron personal financial readiness leader. “In today’s world of high tech and hackers, it’s another layer of security and protection against fraud. It’s in line with what other financial agencies do.”

The traditional login method with a member’s username/account number and password is enhanced by adding a one-time verification code members receive through email and/or text each time the account is accessed. Someone who tries to fraudulently log into an account won’t be able to gain access without the username/account number, the password, and the one-time code.

Account holders who want to learn more about what they can do with TSP accounts can now find a series of educational and informational videos on YouTube under the TSP4gov account. These videos provide an in-depth look into retirement investment planning and answers questions that TSP investors care about the most.

The video page contains episodes for new employees, seasoned investors, and both military and civil service employees. There are TSP webinars, ‘learn how to manage’ TSP accounts, investment options, and participant testimonials — more than 60 videos and growing. “Although these are tools for people to utilize at home,” says Villareal, “we encourage people to come in and ask questions to get individual answers, and that’s for everyone, to include DoD civilians — not just junior Airmen or people in financial trouble.”

Also, annual TSP contribution limits will increase to $19,500 starting in January 2020.

The annual “Catch-Up” contribution limit, which allows people over the age of 50 to invest a little more and catch up to those who started investing earlier in life, is rising to $6,500 as well. The 2019 limits for TSP contribution and “Catch-Up” contributions, set by the Internal Revenue Service, were $19,000 and $6,000 respectively in 2019, so both have gone up by $500. Contributors are reminded to carefully calculate their contribution over the course of the calendar year.

In the event contributions are maxed out prior to the end of the calendar year, agency matching contributions for remaining pay periods will be affected.

“Let’s say in October, you’ve met the $19,500 annual limit, and you were getting five percent matching contributions,” says Villareal. “For the pay periods in November and December, you would not be able to contribute any more. Therefore, you would not be receiving any additional matching funds.”

By Matthew Schniper | Colorado Springs Independent Till Kitchen and parent company Altitude Hospitality recently announced that it will relocate to a new spot in the Broadmoor area in summer 2020, while repurposing its existing location into a yet-to-be-named, “family-friendly, open-air dining experience and entertainment complex, featuring pickleball courts, bowling, shuffleboard... and plenty of outdoor games.”

Smørbrød has been replaced by The Roswell (634-2727) at 2727 N. Cascade Ave. It serves a mix of starters, soups, salads, pizzas and sandwiches in the $7 to $13 range. Smørbrød owner Jay Gust, of Pizzeria Rustica and TAPAteria, has retained a small ownership stake here, consulting on the menu. But the primary proprietors are Ross Seville and his wife Lauren Lea, and Michael Head and his wife Tara.

Like Gust, both Seville and Head each bring about 30 total years of industry experience, ranging from time at The Ritz to Patty Jewett. Gust calls the menu a “compilation of American classics” and Seville adds the “primary idea wasn’t to reinvent the wheel, but make great, classic food,

easily accessible, but taken up a notch by Jay.” Seville calls The Roswell an “elevated neighborhood [spot] ... safe, clean and a fun place to go,” News travelled quickly earlier this week about a kitchen fire that has temporarily put O’Malley’s Steak Pub out of commission.

The beloved steakhouse in Palmer Lake, popular in-part for its grill-your-own-steak concept, has already seen a wave of community support.

Among that support, a loyal patron has started a GoFundMe page to help owner Jeff Hulsmann reopen as soon as possible. The goal is a modest $2,500.

O’Malley’s has stood for over three decades in the area, open daily year-round until 2 a.m., usually.

On the Indy’s last formal visit in 2016, I commended the awesome staff for handling a loud Broncos game-day crowd with grace. Not that I don’t cook enough at home, but I recall enjoying the novelty of prepping my own food at a large hibachi-table-like setup, and enjoying my buffalo burger.

Here’s hoping Hulsmann reopens quickly.

Are you sad or are you SAD?

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — It’s that time of year again, when the warm summer fades into autumn chills and frosty winters. The skies become grayer and the sun barely shines. For some, autumn and winter are welcome breaks from the summer heat; but for others, the change in seasons may cause dread.

Some individuals suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, also referred to as Depressive Disorder, with the seasonal pattern. As the name suggests, it’s a form of depression that occurs during the seasonal change, particularly after summer until spring.

SAD occurs more often in northern regions, such as Europe and Canada.

“People living in locations close to the equator experience very low rates of seasonal depression due to their exposure to consistent sunlight year-round,” said U.S. Air Force Capt.

Abigail Wolfe, 86th Medical Group licensed clinical psychologist. “In Germany, daylight hours become significantly shorter in the winter months and SAD appears to be linked to diminishing daylight.”

Melatonin, a sleep-related hormone, and circadian rhythm can be disrupted by the sudden change in sunlight exposure.

Serotonin, a chemical in the brain that affects mood, is thought to play a role in SAD. Lack of sunlight can cause a drop in this chemical, which may trigger depression.

“The decrease in sunlight may disrupt the body’s internal clock, reduce the levels of feel-good neurochemicals--such as serotonin--and disrupt the hormones that regulate sleep patterns and overall mood states,” Wolfe said.

Symptoms may be similar to other types of depression such as feelings of hopelessness, despair, apathy, lack of motivation, wanting to oversleep, anxiety, and lethargy. Similar to a physical injury, the disorder should be treated and cared for properly, but it’s important to note the symptoms can be on a spectrum.

“For those mildly impacted, basic interventions such as maintaining a regular sleep and exercise schedule may prove effective,” Wolfe said. “The use of light therapy employing a SAD lamp that emits at least 10,000 lux has proven to be an effective way to deal with this condition, and symptoms that come with it.”

People on a mild level of seasonal pattern depression may

benefit from taking Vitamin D supplements, exercising regularly, maintaining a good sleep schedule, and eating nutritious foods.

For severe symptoms such as suicidal thoughts or behavior, anxiety, eating disorders, alcohol dependency, or substance abuse, it’s a good idea to seek professional help. Ramstein Air Base has various options available such as the mental health clinic, Military Family Life Counseling and Chaplains.

“People with more severe symptoms of depression may

require a higher level of care including talk therapy and medication,” Wolfe said.

No one is ever alone in their internal battles, even if it might feel like it. SAD is common and there’s no shame in experiencing it. In the U.S. alone, SAD is estimated to affect 10 million people, which means 1 in 30 people suffer from it. Just because it’s not visible doesn’t mean it’s not real.

“The important takeaway point is: resources are available to help people struggling with symptoms of seasonal depression through the dreary winter months,” Wolfe said.

Nitty gritty and deployment ready

By Senior Airman Clayton Wear | 30TH SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — The 30th Civil Engineer Squadron conducted over 96 hours of bivouac, or deployment condition, training from Nov. 4 – 8, 2019, at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, Calif.

While at March ARB, the 30th CES engineers performed various tasks, such as digging trenches, fixing a simulated bombed airfield, and setting up an aircraft arresting system.

“All of our trades come together so that we can build, restore, and keep airplanes flying from the ground up,” said James Haleski, 30th CES readiness and emergency management flight chief. “The truth is, we came down here because we don’t have the assets and equipment to provide this quality of training and atmosphere for our Airmen at Vandenberg. They get handson with all of the specialized equipment they will be using down range that we do not on home station.”

Through the refreshed Prime BEEF (Base Engineer Emergency Force) program, all civil engineers in the Air Force are required to receive 96 hours of training every 36 months. To assist Vandenberg Airmen with this specialized training requirement, the Regional Training Site at March ARB provided Vandenberg engineers the opportunity to get hands-on time with the equipment they would have access to down range.

“Often times when CE units deploy, we go to a location that doesn’t have anything. We have to set up tents, get power and welcome those follow on forces,” said Senior Master Sgt. Christopher Huller, 30th CES operations flight superintendent. “Some of us older engineers have deployed a lot, and we have a lot of experience to teach our Airmen what to expect down range.

If we send guys down range who have not had this training, it slows down the entire process. That’s why we are here.”

In order to attend the training at March ARB, the 30th CES Airmen were required to complete all the normal pre-deployment steps such as chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense training and other computer-based trainings. This not only increased their training and readiness, but it also enhanced their ability to execute the mission.

“Readiness has many faces. I always hear ‘I did my CBRN training, my SelfAid Buddy Care, or my deployment folder is up to date’, but readiness is about our ability to execute our assigned missions no matter where we are,” said Haleski. “Seeing these guys come down here is about watching our seasoned senior non-commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers mentor, mold and train our up and coming Airmen so that when they do get sent down range they get off the plane ready to execute their mission.”
