Space Force enlists first trainees to bootcamp Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs FORT MEADE, Md. (AFNS) — The Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. David D. “DT” Thompson swore in the first four Space Force recruits Oct. 20, 2020, placing them on a direct path to Basic Military Training and marking another milestone in the new service’s growth and development. The ceremony at the Military Entrance Processing Station - Baltimore will be followed hours later by a similar ceremony at MEPS-Denver, Colorado, for three additional Space Force recruits. All seven are bound for seven and a half weeks of basic training at Air Force BMT, which is located at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. While the number is modest, the actions are both meaningful and symbolic of the Space Force’s evolution since it was created Dec. 20, 2019, as the nation’s newest military branch. “Today is an important milestone as we stand up the Space Force,” Thompson said. “Until now, we’ve been focused on building our initial ranks with transfers from the Air Force. With these new recruits, we begin to look to the future of our force by bringing in the right people directly to realize our aspirations of building a techsavvy service that’s reflective of the nation we serve.” Space Force bootcamp will capitalize on the existing foundation of Air Force BMT and will incorporate space-specific curriculum to create the Space Force experience. "We're excited to see this happen," said Chief Master Sgt. Roger A. Towberman, Space Force senior enlisted advisor. "The Air Force team at Basic Military Training

has been outstanding and deserves most of the credit for making this happen quickly. To watch these first Space Force recruits take their oath for the first time is something I will never forget. They are the future, and it's incredible to be in their service!"

Stephanie Miller, director of military accession policy, Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Personnel Policy will join Thompson and Towberman, along with MEPS and Air Force Recruiting Service regional leaders, at the Baltimore event. Space Force leadership has previously stated diversity among its ranks is one of its priorities in standing up the new service. Among the new recruits, there are two women and five men; two African Americans and five caucasians. The recruits hail from Colorado, Maryland and Virginia, and their ages range from 18-31. The events in Maryland and Colorado offer a tangible, real-world example of the next phase of the Space Force’s development. After months of painstaking planning and important actions to establish policies, procedures and doctrine, the induction of the seven Space Professionals is evidence that the force is proceeding forward as senior leaders expected. By the end of fiscal year 2021, the Space Force is expected to have about 6,500 active-duty Space Force members. The goal is to have about 2,500 members in space operations career fields in the service by the end of calendar year 2020. Beginning Dec. 1, active-duty senior enlisted Airmen in cyber, intelligence, acquisitions, and engineering career fields will begin transferring, with officers and other enlisted members in those career fields beginning transfers Feb. 1. From there, the size of the force is expected to grow consistently over time until it reaches 6,500.

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — More than 30 officers and enlisted military members were among the first to join the newly formed United States Space Force during an official swearing in ceremony Sept. 3, 2020. Those members were former Airmen with the 20th Space Control Squadron. After being sworn in to the new military branch, squadron personnel exchanged Air Force spice brown for Space Force blue thread uniform insignias and a full color American flag worn on their left shoulder. “I am extremely honored and humbled to be one of the founding members of the U.S. Space Force,” said 1st Lt. Conner Thigpen, 20th SPCS crew commander. “The military provided me with an incredible opportunity and I am excited to continue my service to the nation by protecting U.S. and Allied interests in space.” The 20th SPCS operates the AN/FPS-85 Phased Array Radar located at Site C-6 here. Serving as Eglin’s only space

weapon system, the unit’s missions and designations varied throughout its 51 years of operations. The organization evolved from the 2nd Surveillance Squadron to 20th Space Surveillance Squadron in the 1960s, to the 20th Missile Warning Squadron in the 1980s, to the current 20th Space Control Squadron in the early 2000s. The unit’s new Space Force squadron designation is currently in development and will be released in the near future. The USSF was officially established as the sixth branch of the U.S. military Dec. 20, 2019. “This is truly a pivotal moment in U.S. military history. Much like how the creation of the U.S. Air Force in 1947 marked a national dedication to the development of Airpower, the birth of the U.S. Space Force echoes the same dedication to Spacepower through unencumbered development of space professionals and capabilities,” said Lt. Col. Michael Wilson, the squadron’s director of operations.

Stay alive, don’t drink and drive By Airman 1st Class Jonathan Whitely | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — It’s important Airmen drive sober while operating a vehicle as it can affect more than just themselves. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about one in three traffic deaths in the U.S. involve a drunk driver. “There is no legal [blood alcohol content] when you’re driving in Colorado,” said Capt. Jordan Davies, PetersonSchriever Garrison legal office chief

of discharges. “You can be arrested, charged and convicted of [driving under the influence] if you have any level of alcohol in your system [that] impairs your ability to drive, it’s called a DWAI, driving while ability impaired, so you could have BAC of .05, .03, or .02 and still be arrested and convicted of DUI.” For perspective, one drink raises the average person’s BAC to .02. Davies said if convicted of a civilian

DUI, the penalties include fines, jail time, license revocation, mandatory community service, alcohol rehabilitation classes and installing a certified ignition interlock device on a privately owned vehicle, which prompts the operator of a vehicle has to blow into a breathalyzer to start the vehicle. Academy firefighters respond to Wild Horse fire at Fort Carson By Ray Bowden | U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY PUBLIC AFFAIRS U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Firefighters at the Air Force Academy were among several agencies to respond to a wildfire burning on Fort Carson that blackened hundreds of acres Oct. 13, 2020. The Wild Horse Fire still burned Tuesday near Highway 115 south of Fort Carson's Gate 6, but no structures or personnel were in danger, according to a Fort Carson News release. Six firefighters assigned to the Academy’s 10th Civil Engineering Squadron responded to Fort Carson on Sunday to work with other agencies to keep the fire from crossing Highway 115, and provided water to fight the blaze. The news release from Fort Carson indicates the fire likely began Oct. 12 on the west side of Highway 115. “We’re monitoring the fire operations and ready to provide resources if required,” Prettyman said. “So far, the incident command team has not requested anymore support from the Academy.” The Academy firefighters returned to the school early Monday morning. By Oct. 13, firefighters assigned to Fort Carson had established a perimeter and were focusing on “hot spots,” according to another news release from the base. Along with the Academy firefighters, fire experts from the Cimarron Hills Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Fire Department,

BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Colorado Freedom Memorial Foundation unveiled the new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument Oct. 14, 2020, at the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Aurora, Colo. The Woody Williams Foundation, founded by World War II Medal of Honor recipient Hershel "Woody" Williams, dedicated this monument to the Coloradan families who have had loved ones either killed or missing in action. JFCC IMD Airmen transfer to U.S. Space Force

More than 8,500 airmen answered that call, and these five were among the 2,400 selected. “You are volunteers and now you are plank holders who have taken advantage of the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of Space Force standing up our

newest uniformed service,” said Karbler. “I think about your experience in JFFC IMD where we are a small organization but we have a huge strategic impact. You’re going to fit right in the vision and model that Gen. (John W. “Jay”) Raymond has laid out for the Space Force. Your IMD experience is going to set you up for success within the Space Force. We will continue to be strategically important to the nation as we continue to build up the Space Force. “I just want to tell you thank you very much and express my gratitude to you for being one to step out and continue to lead from the front being plank holders in Space Force and being great members of the JFFC IMD team,” Karbler said. Karbler then administered the Oath of Office and the Oath of Enlistment and presented each newly appointed Space Force service member with a plaque. The plaques identify each of these teammates as an official plank holder of the USSF and one of the first to join its ranks.

Following the ceremony, Behrendt said he is happy and excited to participate in such a momentous occasion. “As a graduate from the United States Air Force Academy, that was always the initial direction for me, but I believe space is a critical part of our future as a nation,” Behrendt said. “I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to embark on this adventure, to push the boundaries of technology and to contribute to the Space Force’s success.” The USSF, officially activated Dec. 20, 2019, is a military service that organizes, trains and equips space forces to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. USSF responsibilities include developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power, and organizing space forces to present to the United States’ combatant commands.

Historic agreement opens defense data to academia By Staff Sgt. Rita Jimenez | 122ND FIGHTER WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, Mass. (AFNS) — Data is a commodity that fuels the technological world. Data powers machine learning, drives advances in artificial intelligence and helps corporate and government leaders make better, more informed decisions. One of the largest owners of data, the Department of Defense, known for its steadfast protective oversight of this digital gold, embarked on a historical first this year: a first with the ability to improve the effectiveness, agility, affordability and speed of operations for a myriad of stakeholders. The unprecedented idea started at another new DoD venture located in the heart of academia. Members of the USAF-MIT Artificial Intelligence Accelerator, a new unit under the Department of the Air Force, located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tackled some of the most difficult challenges facing our nation and the Air and Space Forces. The AI Accelerator, a small multi-disciplinary team of Airmen, scientists, researchers engineers and students, works towards creating functional AI systems that can be rapidly adopted by the DOD and society. A functional AI system requires large amounts of data. Making eligible Air Force datasets publicly accessible is an important aspect of researching and developing any AI system. Offering this accessibility was an undertaking that the Airmen at the AI Accelerator deemed necessary. “By making data more accessible and available, we are able to bring the smartest minds to bear on AI challenges that directly impact the Department of the Air Force and the United States,” said Maj. David F. Jacobs, chief legal advisor to the AI Accelerator. “One of the first problems we had to tackle at the AI Accelerator was how to make eligible Air Force datasets publicly accessible so that researchers at MIT and other academic institutions across the United States could work with real data to tackle real problems.” This problem prompted Jacobs to develop a first-of-its-kind Air Force data sharing agreement for research and collaboration. Built upon other government, industry and academic data sharing agreements, this paved the road for terms and conditions under which the Air Force can share data to the broader AI community and contribute to advancements in the field. “Data rights and intellectual property rights are extremely important considerations when developing any AI technology,” Jacobs said, who works closely with Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps, Secretary of the Air Force General Counsel and the Air Force Research Laboratory Legal Counsel on legal issues involving intellectual property, data rights, contracting, cyber law, human subject research and ethics. Accessing large amounts of Air Force data in a centralized and secure way is another challenge for the AI Accelerator. By partnering with the Air Force Chief Data Office, the AI Accelerator uses the Visible, Accessible, Understandable, Linked and Trustworthy data platform, or VAULT, as a means to provide a centralized, secure and accessible place for hosting both public and controlled Air Force data sets. “The VAULT is an enterprise level collaboration environment that resides on both the high side and low side, the NIPR and SIPR net,” said Derek J. Eichin, lead research analyst at the Air Force Chief Data Office. “The VAULT provides multiple tenants, secure spaces or ‘sandboxes’ for various tenants to bring in their data, use our enterprise tools, whether they be open source or licensed software, and store and curate data driven analytics within that architecture.” “The VAULT is used as a catalyst for helping many organizations in the Air Force realize the potential technology and capability that they have,” said Lt. Col. Operation Warp Speed makes swift progress By Terri Moon Cronk | DEFENSE.GOV WASHINGTON — Unprecedented progress has been made recently on Operation Warp Speed - the effort by the Defense Department, Health and Human Services, other federal agencies and private industry to develop a coronavirus vaccine, an HHS official said Oct. 9, 2020. In a telephone briefing with reporters, HHS policy deputy chief of staff Paul Mango said, "We're very, very pleased with where we are." He was joined on the media conference call by Dr. Janet Woodcock, M.D., the director of the centers for drug evaluation research at the Food and Drug Administration, and Dr. Jay Butler, the deputy director for infectious diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mango reminded reporters that four of the six vaccine candidates are in phase III clinical trials, and added that the Food and Drug Administration continues to review vaccine safety information on the candidates. "For all of these vaccines - all six vaccine candidates - we are already manufacturing at industrial scale," he said, "Along the way, we've encountered the normal what I would say scientific obstacles that had to be overcome. We feel very good about having done that. And now we're just waiting particularly for those that are in phase III trials for the appropriate number of events to occur so that those vaccines can be evaluated by the FDA." Progress has also been made on vaccine distribution plans, he said. "We're in the process of actively engaging tens of thousands of provider outlets for these vaccines," Mango said. Article 113 of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice states operating a car, boat or airplane while intoxicated is a criminal act and carries consequences. However, Airmen cannot receive civilian criminal DUI charges and an Article 113 simultaneously. “If you get a military DUI, your base driving privileges may be suspended or revoked and you face anything from paperwork to a court-martial depending on the circumstances.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10,511 people died from drunk-driving crashes in the U.S. in 2018. “It’s illegal, harmful to others and it is detrimental to your career,” said Tech. Sgt. Nicholas Jenich, 50th Security Forces Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of standardization and evaluations. “Airmen should think before they drink and always have a plan.” Jenich said the 50th SFS monitors all vehicles entering and on the installation to ensure the safety of Airmen and their families. “We watch and observe to see if a vehicle is swerving, we monitor its speed and if there are any abnormal changes to the vehicles speed,” Jenich said. “Once we make contact with the driver, we ask a series of questions and run through different tests.” The tests include going through the alphabet, starting at a random letter, balance tests, such as standing on one leg, walking in a straight line for nine steps and turning and the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, when the officer observes the drivers eyes while asking them questions. If the officer has determined that the driver is intoxicated, the officer will take them to the station where

City Works Eatery the next food hall slated for downtown By Matthew Schniper | Colorado Springs Independent While COATI continues to enjoy its grand opening revelry, the Springs will see its second food hall open downtown sometime after the turn of the year, tentatively, in the form of City Works Eatery at 19 N. Tejon St. The 28,000 square-foot project comes courtesy Sam Guadagnoli (Cowboys, Blondie’s and more surrounding nightclubs) and his nephew Chuck Schafer (Purple Toad, Prime 25). It will feature a total of nine vendors, with indoor community tables, streetside and balcony patios, VIP rooms and a vintage motorcycle museum. The sole outside vendor will be 5 Star BBQ, while the owners will partner up on: Roll It Up (lobster rolls, egg rolls “with a flare”); Ból (ramen style noodles); Mac Out (build-your-own mac and cheese); Big City Deli (a traditional New York-style deli with meats, cheeses and more for sale); The Crispy Chick (“everything fried chicken”); and Scooters (a vintage-style ice cream and candy shop). That leaves just one yet-to-be-named stall that will sell salads, fresh juices and the like, as well as a final concept from Schafer called Longboard Tacos (Baja California-style street tacos). That will actually be only one of three Longboard locations to come by summer, says a PR rep, noting another near Prime 25 and the third off of Interquest Parkway. Not all details are finalized yet for City Works Eatery, so the PR rep couldn’t yet explain exactly how the different kitchen entities will interact in relation to internal oversight (i.e. will there be separate kitchen managers and/or an executive chef overseeing the full vision?). But it sounds like there will be separate kitchen areas as well as use of neighboring Cowboy’s kitchen, I’m told. What immediately differentiates City Works Eatery from COATI is that COATI opened with partial

intent as an incubation space for different vendors to rotate in over time and try out brick-and-mortar (some coming from food trucks, for example). It’s run out of a central prep kitchen with its own staff supporting the individual cook spaces of each vendor; it does operate its own bar. The vendors are otherwise their own businesses. City Works, by contrast, aside from its sold outside vendor (the barbecue entity) appears to be

multiple concepts by the same ownership (who already hold a deep portfolio of restaurants and nightclubs, most nearby). Basically it looks like a way to create the food hall atmosphere and experience but without herding a bunch of separate business owners to the space. We’ll be curious to see if it feels like its own standalone self, or an extension of the existing Guadagnoli block.

The second challenge problem addressing an alternative to GPS through magnetic navigation was presented at the international conference JuliaCon, a conference dedicated to the Julia programming language. “At the conference, we presented the challenge problem,” Jacobs said. “Here’s what we’ve done so far. Here is some very valuable Air Force data, have at it and see what we get.” In the AI community, winning a challenge problem is for bragging rights. It is for smart minds who want to be

leaders in the field and advance technology for everyone. The C-17 Globemaster III scheduling challenge was the first of its kind in the Air Force and brought together more than 50 Airmen and DOD civilians to tackle the problems given. The magnetic navigation challenge reached outside traditional Air Force channels to embrace a broader group of academic minds. The team from Arizona State University put forth a very solid submission. Some of their proposed solutions and results won the AI Accelerator’s challenge, and showed Air Force leaders that sharing their data can bring about faster, more innovative results. “Data is now recognized as a strategic asset to the Department of Defense,” Jacobs said. “Datasets for AI training and algorithmic models will increasingly become the DOD’s most valuable use of this strategic asset. The Department of the Air Force is setting the groundwork for smartly sharing data to train AI for immediate and lasting military advantages.”
