THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Knocking out professional military education, or PME, by correspondence is a rite of passage for officers. Without PME complete, you take yourself out of the running for future promotions. Many officers sign up immediately after finding out about a promotion to avoid any stigma associated with doing PME “late.” PME by correspondence means spending a lot of evenings and weekends hitting the books, prepping for tests, and writing essays. The subject matter ranges from pretty interesting to drier than the Sahara desert, but one assignment I completed for Air War College, now called senior developmental education, really had an impact on me.

I don’t remember the exact task or question. What I do remember is that the assignment forced me to reflect back over my entire Air Force career, about 16 years at that point, and think about where I was and how I wanted the remainder of my career to go.

We spend a lot of time as Airmen looking forward—to the next assignment, to the next promotion, to where we want to be in five years. That is a mostly a good thing. It forces us to plan and set goals. It forces us to work hard and improve, and helps us through rough patches. We are better people and create better units by looking forward.

Reflection, on the other hand, seems to be something we only do when we have reached a big goal such as promotion or retirement.

Reflection is important, but waiting for those big milestones may be too late. Too late to decide if we are on the right path, and too late to appreciate what we have and what we have done.

Sometimes, the push for the next new thing leaves little time to savor the moment.

What pushes us can also make us dissatisfied, anxious, or unsure about where we are right now.

To complete my assignment, I thought back to the person who went to see a recruiter, went through Officer Training

School, and commissioned into the Air Force as a second lieutenant. Who was that person? What did she want out of her Air Force career? Would she be happy with the person she was 16 years later? That person, the Jody Zolman who entered the Air Force, wasn’t worried about making a certain rank, getting a certain job, what her next performance report said or how she racked and stacked among her peers. She wanted two things out of an Air Force career, to travel and to have an opportunity for a secure retirement. Simple and easy.

When I looked at my career through that lens, I felt wildly successful. At that point, I had been to eight assignments in six different countries, with temporary duty assignments to five others. I was four years from being eligible to retire. It was kind of a “wow” moment for me. I realized no matter what happened for the rest of my career, I had done, or was doing, what I set out to do.

I also realized that those original goals still felt right to me. This gave me a sense of deep contentedness with my career and has also steered my path since that time.

It has been almost five years since I completed that PME assignment. I have passed the 20 year mark in my career, a point at which I always thought I would retire, but then there was this opportunity at Thule Air Base, Greenland, and I still like to travel.

Col. Falzarano's ‘TDY for a day’: CMAFS edition

— Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado, also frequently known as the mountain, is home to Airmen, Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and civilians dedicated to protecting the United States by monitoring space warning systems.

Col. Thomas Falzarano, 21st Space Wing commander, visited CMAFS Sept. 6, 2019 to see the military and civilian members who work there and understand what they need to keep this crucial mission going.

Falzarano Began his visit by addressing a crowd of military members and civilians, explaining his priorities and goals for the wing. He explained the impact of his three R’s,

respect, readiness and responsibility on the Airmen under his command. He then talked about his hope that those present would focus on creating connections in their offices to help enhance resiliency in their units, emphasizing the idea that individuals can make a great impact on the lives of others by genuinely caring and taking time to listen to what they have to say.

He had the chance to visit the medical and fitness centers, the newly renovated chapel, the Missile Warning Centers and control rooms as well as view the infrastructure. While visiting, he spoke with at least one Airman working in each area, to better understand what their

day-to-day struggles and operations are.

To finish the visit, Falzarano went to Fire Station Two located on CMAFS and suited up with the firefighters to participate in a training exercise.

After the exercise, Falzarano coined each of the Airmen in the fire department, and in return he was coined by the fire chief.

“It’s a privilege to have a wing commander that wants to know more about your job and learn what you do every day,” said Staff Sgt. Josh Scott, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron driver. “It shows a lot about his character, with how he wants to know what we do on a daily basis.”

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR ENFORCEMENT OF REAL ID ACT

The Department of Homeland Services has extended the deadline of enforcement of the REAL ID Act to Oct. 1, 2020. This means that driver’s licenses and identification cards issued by any U.S. state, regardless of whether the stat is non-REAL ID Act compliant, can still be accepted until the new deadline as valid forms of identification by federal facilities, including all Air Force instillations.

The mountain’s medical team

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN AIR FORCE STATION, Colo.

— When you wake up on a work day and you’re not feeling too great, it’s pretty easy to walk into the base military treatment facility to get yourself taken care of. However, when you hold a position that puts you at a minimum of 30 minutes away from an MTF, that can provide a bit of a challenge.

Tech. Sgt. Jerrica Wild, 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron independent duty medical technician, and her coworkers ensure medical care isn’t an issue for the military service members and civilians located at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado.

“Our main mission is to provide sick call for the mem-

bers at the mountain and help them feel better so the mission doesn’t suffer.”

Every person stationed at the mountain has a specific job to do, and most positions are filled by multiple people, but commuting to Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado for healthcare puts a strain on their staffing resources.

“It’s easier for them to be able to just stop by our office and have us take care of it,” said Wild. “It’s great to know that these individuals who are out here looking out for national security can count on us to alleviate the pressure of medical care when they need it.”

most enlisted medical technicians. With her extra training and certifications, she is able to see patients, diagnose them and prescribe medications, and get patients the care they need without having to see three different people.

“We are the only enlisted providers in the Air Force,” Wild said. “The training I have enables me to see active duty members for acute issues and provide them with the same care they would get from any other provider.

We have the ability to help lessen the patient load for the providers here at Peterson and act as a medical asset for different squadrons.”

IDMTs mostly exist for deployment settings, according to Wild, where there may be one IDMT to an entire squadron.

They are trained to diagnose, prescribe medications, draw blood and do lab work, work as public health and bioenvironmental agents, dental and pharmacy technicians and provide immunizations.

“We are deemed the jacks-of-all-trades, because we are specialized in a little bit of everything that encompasses a clinic,” said Wild. “It can be a stressful job, and you have to be a forward thinker and very dedicated to making sure that you keep up on all your training and certifications current.”

As an IDMT, Wild is part of a full lockdown medical asset team at Cheyenne Mountain.

“If there is any threat to the United States or anything like 9/11, everyone gets recalled, and those blast doors get closed,” said Wild. “Our job at that point is to make sure that we can provide medical care to any who need it.”

The medical team has flight surgeons, mental health, IDMTs and public health personnel. With the whole team present, they are able to split into shifts to make sure that no one person is overworked.

“The biggest challenge is getting into the mindset of how we would operate under a lockdown situation,” said Wild.

“It’s like working in a deployed environment, just in a hardened facility. It’s just as demanding, just a different setting.”

To prepare, the teams undergo frequent exercises and participate in annual exercises all Cheyenne Mountain personnel go through.

“Sometimes all the work and training can be a bit extreme,” said Wild, “but knowing that we can make an impact like that and having the ability to make a difference to the mission firsthand makes it worth it.”

CMAFS fire department trains hard, works with community

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.

— Fighting fires on Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado, is often unlike fighting fires anywhere else. That should be no surprise, given that CMAFS hosts the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, a massive subterranean facility made of steel, constructed under a mile and a half of rock.

According to David Arcilla, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron installation fire chief for Cheyenne Mountain, preventing fires inside the complex is only part of their job — CMAFS has outside buildings he can manage as normal, as well as 560 acres of forested land he and his team must attend to. They train to fight more typical structure fires and wildfires, as well as fires within the complex.

It’s an important duty station, as the complex serves as an alternate command center for North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command. Preventing fires helps NORAD and USNORTHCOM execute their mission of aerospace warning, aerospace control and providing advanced warning of ballistic missile or air attacks against North America.

The facility inside the mountain provides unique challenges, so the CMAFS fire department runs an extensive fire prevention and education program. Day to day, Arcilla and his team track construction efforts and any activities that might cause fumes to accumulate — underground, ventilation is a critical issue. That’s even truer during a fire response.

“I can’t just pop a door and expect hot gasses to come out,” he says. “If I go to a house fire on Peterson [Air Force Base, Colorado], I can put a hole in the roof, and all of the gasses come out. Here, we have to be more careful.”

Arcilla, a native of Molokai, Hawaii, has been a firefighter since he first joined the Air Force in 1980. He served for 22 years and earned the rank of master sergeant be-

“Any emergency on base that disrupts mission flow or the normalcy of the base, we respond,” he says. “We’re trained to mitigate, and we get things back to the ready state so the mission can continue.”

Beyond that, he manages staffing, equipment, fleet status, staff readiness and certification. As for certification, CMAFS has historically been on the frontlines in the Air Force. Arcilla’s team has been accredited

by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International and the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Currently, he’s working to train the recently-combined CMAFS and Peterson fire departments to accredit both.

“We’re actively screening every document in both departments and planning for, hopefully, a full accreditation when we meet the board next year,” he says.

The CMAFS fire department also does a lot of work in the community, training alongside fire departments in Colorado Springs and El Paso County, part of what Arcilla describes as

extensive mutual agreements. Their wildfire fighting training saved lives and land in 2012 and 2013, when his department supported efforts to fight massive forest fires in Waldo Canyon and near Black Forest.

“The May 2019 fire at Regency Tower apartments, the high-rise fire, we sent our mobile air unit to fill self-contained breathing apparatus bottles,” he says. “If I’m overwhelmed, we have an agreement where city and county fire departments come and help me, and if they’re overwhelmed, we’ll go and help them.”

Even a lock down is no excuse to skip leg day

The gym inside CMAFS has a weight/cardio room and a spin/aerobics room, while the gym outside has a little bit of everything. The spin/aerobics room has a kiosk that allows people to experience a class without an instructor.

It offers spin, step aerobics, kickboxing and other classes normally available at the gym on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

“The goal is to give everyone the same fitness environment that they would have at Peterson,” said McKinney. “Normally they would need a certified instructor to lead classes, and that’s not always possible, so the kiosk fills that need.”

The gyms also have all the same equipment as the Peterson facility, just in a smaller quantity.

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN AIR FORCE STATION, Colo. — The Air Force places a high standard on physical fitness for Airmen at all levels, and the standards don’t stop at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado.

CMAFS has two gyms available to personnel who want to maintain their fitness: one inside the mountain that is split into two areas, and one outside of the compound. Airmen from the 21st Force Support Squadron make sure that everything stays up and running for the mountain’s personnel.

Airman 1st Class James McKinney, 21st FSS fitness specialist, is one of those Airmen.

“It’s our job to make sure that all the equipment is fully functional for everyone who depends on it. We run routine checks, and if anything needs to be replaced or

The convenience of having a workout space available is the main point of the gyms, according to McKinney, but it also helps in case of a lockdown situation. Should CMAFS have to lock down for any amount of time, military and civilian members can still maintain fitness standards.

If there were a lockdown situation, it could last longer than 24 hours. Understanding that chance enhances the need for the fitness areas inside the mountain, because whether they are locked down for a week, a month or longer, the service members will need to be mission ready.

By Airman Alexis Christian | 21ST SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — For the 21st Comptroller Squadron, everything throughout the year leads up to the big day, Sept. 30, which is the end of the fiscal year closeout.

“It’s a process that goes all year long,” said Gordon Hauser, 21st CPTS civil engineer budget analyst. “It’s not just Sept. 30, that’s just a deadline to work toward during the year.”

Closeout is an important end of year accounting for every dollar spent in the 21st Space Wing and at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. Airmen in the Peterson finance office are behind all of the numbers and balancing that goes on during the year. According to Tech. Sgt. Jillian Novak-Stinson, 21st CPTS flight chief and financial analyst, this event is not just a quick sign off, there is a lot of work and communication that goes into it.

“It’s the last day of the fiscal year for finance, so we have to ensure that all the accounts for everyone on our base are closed and balanced,” Novak said. “It’s a lot of communication, I work on the tenant side of the house and it’s over $2 billion that we manage and we can’t do that in house.”

Novak and Airman 1st Class Kaci Martin, 21st CPTS financial analyst said they work as the go between for the tenant units and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, to make sure that money that has been set aside to pay for certain things has been officially approved.

“Tenants were just added to our checklist for this year, so it’s been a whole new beast,” said Martin. “It can be hard because the tenants may have set aside money to go toward

a project or equipment, and if DFAS hasn’t approved it yet, we can’t count it as fully closed out. So we have to take the accounts and call DFAS for approval to do our part.”

Closeout involves a lot of research and tying up loose ends, according to Martin, and making sure no one is overspending on their budget.

“In basic terms, it’s balancing a big check book. We have to go through and make sure all the transactions have been done correctly and that everything balances out properly,” said Novak.

With a focused team, the Peterson finance office worked some late nights to make sure that closeout was completed, and according to Novak the hours weren’t easy.

“It’s a work day that doesn’t end until headquarters tells you you’re done. You run reports and call to get info from people who have already gone home,” she said. “Luckily it’s just a few days a year, it’s not constant and I have a huge amount of respect for shift workers and people who work 12 hours at a time.”

The hardest part can be new people joining the team, according to Martin. She says you can’t teach people how to do closeout operations ahead of time, because every year is different. You can only learn it by doing it.

“I think it’s something that is important to everyone, everyone it affected in one way or another,” Hauser said. “This year, for instance, the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron is getting carpet, and the dorms are getting a new lock system put in. All of this goes through our office and we account for it all.”

Academy cadet remains resilient despite MS diagnosis

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Garrett Tuin was playing ping-pong with friends last year when he realized he couldn’t see the ball.

He was home from the Air Force Academy on winter break, and his symptoms continued to worsen. Tuin was concerned, but his initial thought was that he scratched his eye while snowmobiling the day before or had pink eye.

“I made an appointment with my ophthalmologist, who ran some tests, and she basically came back and said there was something going on with my optic nerve and while she didn’t want to jump to any conclusion it was a tell-tale sign of multiple sclerosis,” he said.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and often progressive disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. MS symptoms may include numbness, blindness, muscle weakness and fatigue. There is currently no cure for MS. Tuin had long dreamt of becoming a pilot; he knew that would no longer be possible.

He held out hope that further testing would not reveal MS because that diagnosis would end his Air Force career altogether.

“I just kept telling myself ‘you’re healthy, you’ll be fine, it’s not MS,’” he said. “I came back to the Academy, and after a series of MRIs, I was diagnosed with MS in February, and after that, my immediate concern became that I wouldn’t be able to graduate from the Academy.”

Tuin, with the help and support of Cadet Wing leadership, submitted a request to graduate without commissioning. He underwent the Medical Evaluation Board process to begin his medical retirement even as he completed the rest of his junior year and put in his name to become a cadet squadron commander in the fall.

He was home on summer break when he got the call that he would be able to complete his senior year.

“It felt a lot better getting that call than even the call when I was accepted into [the Academy],” he said. “Graduation is going to be the best day of my life.”

Tuin is on medication to treat his MS. He is largely asymptomatic; his vision problems limited to periods of high activity like workout sessions or rounds of golf. Tuin said it was important to him that no special exceptions be made for him at the Academy, and he doesn’t let his diagnosis hold him back from physical or military training.

His resilience has been a source of inspiration for Cadet Squadron 10, where he now serves as their cadet squadron commander. Tuin shared his diagnosis with his squadron mates shortly after taking over the role. In September, the squadron honored him by signing up for the MS MuckFest in Denver to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Forty-four cadets and staff from the squadron raised more than $3,000 for the cause.

“Garrett’s story is truly one of making every day matter and never giving up,” said Maj. Toni Merhar, air officer commanding for CS-10. “My job as an AOC is not to have the cadets work for me. I work for them. And it was an honor to share that journey with him [to get the opportunity to graduate]; it was a big win for the whole squadron.”

Tuin will be medically retired the day after graduation. He plans to stay in the local community and pursue work in line with his management major.

“There was nothing I could have done to prevent this from happening, but I feel like I will represent the Air Force Academy and the Air Force with a lot of pride wherever I go from here – not as a lieutenant but still as a leader,” he said.
