Building personal resilience

There are multiple definitions of the word resilience: the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; the ability to be happy or successful after something difficult or bad has happened, and positive adjustment in the face of hardship.

Military resiliency often refers to the training programs that support military personnel and their families in the development of mental, physical, emotional and behavioral toughness, designed to help people cope with adversity, adapt to change and overcome challenges.

This means that to be resilient, one has to know how to cope in spite of setbacks, barriers, or limited resources. It is a measure of how much you want something and how much you are willing to overcome obstacles to get it.

Want to bolster your own inherent resilience? Here are five ways to go about it: 1. Pump Up Your Positivity: Resilient people are categorized by accepting negative and positive emotions, even in difficult and painful situations. Resiliency means finding redeeming value in most challenges and finding a silver lining in difficult times.

2. Live to Learn: Use difficult situations as an opportunity to grow and go for-

ward. Ask yourself, “what is this situation teaching me?” Look at challenges as a chance to learn, problem-solve and build self-confidence.

3. Take Care of Yourself: Good health and a regular routine of healthy habits are fundamental to mental and physical resilience. Daily habits count. When you’re caught up on sleep, eating well and keeping stress levels low, you’ll be less fragile and less likely to fall into unhealthy patterns following a serious setback. One of the best ways to nurture that is to take regular mental breaks, for example by developing a regular meditation practice.

4. Hang on to Humor: Playful humor enhances survival. Laughing reduces tension to more moderate levels and psychologically, choosing lightheartedness can be exceedingly empowering.

5. Open Your Heart: Being of service to others is a powerful way of stoking resilience. In studies, researchers found that serotonin, the neurotransmitter associated with feelings of happiness and well-being, is used more efficiently by people who have just engaged in an act of kindness. When adversity strikes, gratitude for the things that are going right in your life helps put misfortune into viewpoint.

Air Force recognizes Energy Action Month 2019

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — October is Energy Action Month, an opportunity to highlight why energy is a critical enabler to combat capability for the U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense, and to encourage smarter energy use and management for installations, ground vehicles, and aircraft. Unveiled this year, the Air Force theme of “Energy Able, Mission Capable” educates Airmen about the importance of energy readiness and resilience for the global mission.

“By prioritizing energy management and resilience, we are building a strong foundation for the future warfighter and ensuring Airmen have energy when and where they need it,” said the John W. Henderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and energy.

Every year the U.S. Air Force spends nearly $6 billion on energy, with approximately 82% used for aviation fuel,

16% for facilities and installations, and 2% for ground vehicles. While energy is a necessary part of operations, as the modern battlefield grows increasingly complex, keeping it secure and readily available can pose serious risks and challenges for troops. Powering aviation assets requires complex fuel planning and logistics, all the way from refinery and storage facilities to fuel convoys and transport to the end-user. As power projection platforms, installations depend on secure, reliable and quality power to ensure Air Force mission assurance.

The Air Force is focusing on energy resilience and optimization to sustain warfighting capabilities in the air and on the ground. For instance, upgraded aircraft aerodynamics increase range and limit the need for aerial refueling. Investments in modern software improve the effectiveness of tankers and streamline mission planning.

Engine sustainment initiatives increase time on wing and prevent some maintenance issues. At the installation level, from new on-site generating capabilities to ensure energy resilient operations, to a record setting year of energy savings performance contracting, the Air Force is prepared to f ly, fight and win from its installations under any conditions.

During Energy Action Month, the Air Force will emphasize the need for smart energy solutions and inform Airmen, Air Force senior leaders, policy makers and aligned organizations about what they can do to effectively distribute, generate, and manage resilient and reliable energy across the enterprise.

SKYWARN® STORM SPOTTER COURSE TODAY

The National Weather Service is hosting a SKYWARN® Storm Spotter course from 2:30 — 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3rd, at the base auditorium.

This course is open to anyone with access to Peterson Air Force Base, and no prior weather knowledge is required. Attendees will learn how to identify and report severe weather phenomena and earn an official SKYWARN® Storm Spotter certification.

SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with between 350,000 and 400,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather. The storm reports submitted by storm spotters help forecasters with the National Weather Service and Air Force provide more accurate forecasts of severe weather.

Energy Action Month: Saving energy on the road

Stop-and-go traffic in Colorado is something most everyone at the U.S. Air Force Academy is familiar with, but there are ways to conserve energy while driving, even in these conditions.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — October is Energy Action Month across the Defense Department and the Air Force Academy is doing its part year-round to safeguard and conserve our energy resources.

Our mission depends on a reliable supply of energy, and using that energy smarter means accomplishing our mission of developing leaders of character in a more efficient way.

All Total Force Airmen here have a crucial role in achieving our energy goals by making energy a consideration in all we do. Every effort counts and small changes in our daily habits lead to substantial savings.

This month, we’ll promote how we can all save energy in our vehicles, office and dormitory, with some useful tips from the Air Force Energy Assurance Office.

This week, we’ll highlight tips to save energy on the road.

Carpool Carpool whenever possible, take public transportation, and bike or walk instead of driving alone. Sharing a ride to work with one or more people can double the vehicle’s fuel economy during the trip.

Don’t be idle Roughly 15 percent of the energy from the fuel is used to move your car down the road or to run accessories, such as air conditioning. The rest is lost to engine inefficiencies and idling. So don’t idle – it’s expensive and depending on your vehicle, can uses up to one gallon of fuel each hour.

Idling pollutes and accounts for more than six billion gallons of gas annually in the U.S. Idling can threaten your health as inhaling vehicle emissions increases the risks of respiratory illnesses.

Consolidate Combining errands into one trip saves time and money. Your fuel economy is worse when your engine is cold than when it’s warmed up. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multitasking trip covering the same distance. Planning your trip can reduce the amount of time you drive with a cold engine and the distance traveled.

Calm down Don’t be an aggressive driver. Drive at the speed limit as all vehicles lose fuel economy at speeds faster than 55 mph. Driving 65 mph instead of 75 mph can reduce your fuel cost by 13 percent. Driving at 55 mph would reduce your fuel cost by 25 percent.

Leave that air conditioner alone Decrease your use of the air conditioner and close the windows. Air conditioner use increases fuel costs from 13 to 21 percent.

If the weather is cool, use the vehicle’s flowthrough ventilation instead of rolling down the windows or using the air conditioner.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s nomination for Col. Linell Letendre, head of the law department at the Air Force Academy, for promotion to brigadier general.

The confirmation was announced Sept. 26.

Letendre has also been selected to be the Academy’s dean, a position she will officially assume Oct. 17.

The Academy announced April 26 that Letendre was the remaining finalist in the selection process for dean. That announcement followed an exhaustive panel process, in coordination with Air Force senior leaders, in which more than 40 applicants were vetted and evaluated.

By Michael Peterson | 30TH SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Scott Bailey, 30th Space Wing historian, is operating in an interesting time at Vandenberg Air Force Base. As the Air Force pursues one of its core missions to Maintain Air & Space Superiority, Vandenberg’s Western Range and space launch operations are at the forefront of change in the pursuit of cost-effective modernization in the space domain.

For Bailey, who has worked as an Air Force historian since 2009 before coming to the 30th Space Wing in April 2019, changes are a notable and expected part of his career, as he works to preserve the official record of his unit’s operations.

“In essence, this office is the institutional memory of the Wing,” Bailey said, describing how constant turnover of commanders and personnel within units can create gaps in continuity with their past and heritage. “What I do as the Wing Historian is take the past legacy of accomplishment, and tie that to current and future operations and the mission of the Wing.”

To illustrate this point, Bailey motions to a Wing briefing slide detailing contributions to the Apollo 11 lunar mission in 1969. The contributions were made by Detachment 30 of the 6th Weather Wing, which was assigned to Vandenberg AFB at the time.

“With the Apollo mission, the Wing provided meteorological support for the atmospheric re-entry and Pacific recovery site of the Apollo 11 Command Module after their journey to the moon,” Bailey said. “So I can take this

legacy of accomplishment with the moon landing, and associate that into the current and future operations of the Wing as they support public and private partnerships and the commercialization of space – how the Air Force is now supporting that role to go back to the moon.”

This correlation of past heritage to today’s Airmen and leadership is accomplished through five areas of responsibility for the 30th Space Wing History Office.

“What I leverage are the historian lines of effort,” explains Bailey. “Document the official record of 30th Space Wing operations, make information available to decision makers and action officers, provide training and education involving past and current wing operations, inspire today’s Airmen with Airpower heritage, and provide historical and archival reference material for researchers.”

Using these lines of effort, the Wing operations chronicled and shared by Bailey will become heritage for a future generation of Airmen and commanders to learn from – utilizing the history of the 30th Space Wing during an era of rapid commercial space expansion and innovation to help develop the next exceptional leaders in the space domain.

“I’m seeing over the next couple of years, there’s going to be a big push here at Vandenberg to provide support for the commercial ventures into space and it’s going to be huge. The foundation for America’s future in launch operations is contained in the legacy of accomplishment at Vandenberg, a legacy showcased by the History Office.”

AFRC restructures the enlisted grade force

AIR FORCE RESERVE COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

ROBINS AFB, Ga. — On Oct. 1, more than 3,500 enlisted Reserve Citizen Airmen will see upgrades to their grade authorizations.

MAJCOM senior enlisted leaders and other key members reviewed, evaluated and restructured the enlisted grade authorizations as part of the Enlisted Grade Council, established in 2016. The council grew out of a continuous process improvement event to ensure skill levels met AFRC readiness requirements for the AF Reserve. The new grade restructure gives senior leaders more flexibility to meet mission requirements and gives Airmen more opportunities to promote. It also aligns with Lt. Gen. Richard Scobee’s strategic priorities of reforming the organization, building resilient leaders and accelerating readiness. Scobee is the Chief of the Air Force Reserve and commander of the Air Force Reserve.

“With the restructure of the AFRC enlisted grade authorizations, we are in a position to promote the right Airmen, into the right vacancies, to capitalize on that individual’s leadership potential,” said Air Force Reserve Command Chief Master Sgt. Timothy White.

The approved grade changes apply to all statuses within the enlisted Reserve force (Active Guard Reserve members, Air Reserve Technicians, Traditional Reservists and Individual Mobilization Augmentees). The AFRC enlisted grade council will chart the changes and will periodically review, evaluate and manage the enlisted force structure to utilize the Reserve force more efficiently, White explained.

The command chief handles management of the AFRC council with the command’s chief enlisted managers. Final

approval of the grade changes rests with Scobee.

However, not all enlisted grade authorizations will be upgraded. There will be a reduction in grade authorizations for 2 percent of the enlisted force. Personnel currently in those grades will not be impacted. Any desired position moves will be managed by AFRC’s Manpower, Personnel, and Services (A1) directorate, local force support squadrons and Reserve Integration Office detachments.

“The changes on October 1 serve to create a more efficient enlisted force, increase mission readiness and enhance force development across the command,” said Chief Master Sgt. Eric Smith, Chief Enlisted Manager Command and Special Staff, at AFRC Headquarters. He also worked closely with senior leadership on the enlisted grade review. According to Smith, the enlisted grade council will continue to meet regularly to review this restructure.

“I am proud of the deliberate, readiness-focused results the AFRC enlisted force restructure provides to our Reserve Citizen Airmen,” White said. “The opportunity for more than 3,500 enlisted Airmen to be challenged with new rank and responsibility only encourages strategic depth and accelerated readiness to meet our command’s mission.”

With the implementation of the new enlisted force structure finalized, AFRC is now shifting focus to the officer corps, with an officer force structure/force mix initial review initiated in July to begin the process of ensuring accurate force mix across all ranks.

More information regarding the enlisted force structure will be provided through force support, RIO detachments, CEM and MFM channels by October.

Ascension Island's hydroponics lab is revitalizing life on the volcanic island

There was even a movie about future human inhabitance on Mars! But how would that happen? How would we be able to sustain growing food? Mars, a dry and dusty planet, would not be able to support human life organically.

And just like the case would be on Mars, the food choices on Ascension are very limited and depend completely on what supplies are flown to the island.

“If you’ve ever been to Ascension Island, or even looked at photos online, the island doesn’t differ much from Mars,” said Cathy Little, agricultural specialist at Ascension Island AAF. Supplies including food are flown to the island because Ascension’s water cycle, soil and topography make it very difficult for anything to grow on the island – what does grow, you cannot or would not want to eat.

Until recently.

Hydroponics, or the process of growing plants in sand, gravel, or liquid in the place of soil, can be seen in the movie The Martian. Though it seems like something only a screenwriter could come up with, the agricultural team on Ascension Island has taken the idea and run with it.

“The hydroponics lab isn’t a laboratory in the traditional sense,” said Little. “Our facility is an 8,721 square foot greenhouse that has two vine crop bays and one leaf crop bay.”

In the greenhouse, the team on Ascension uses two different systems to grow fresh produce on the volcanic island. For vining crops like tomatoes and peppers, they use a nutrient

injection system, bucket system and Perlite, which is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content. For leafy crops like lettuce and herbs, they use a nutrient film technique, where a very shallow stream of nutrient-filled water is re-circulated past the bare roots of the plants.

Though the lab has grown over the years, hydroponics is not new to Ascension Island.

“During World War II, the shipping of fresh vegetables overseas was not practical and remote islands where troops were stationed were not a place where they could be grown in the soil,” said Rick Simmons, hydroponics expert in a 2008 article. “In 1945, the U.S. Air Force built one of the first large hydroponic farms on Ascension Island, using crushed volcanic rock as a growing medium.”

“Growing conditions haven’t changed since World War II; therefore the need for hydroponics still exists,” said Little. “Just as it was in 1945, shipping fresh vegetables to a remote island is not cost effective and with the lack of arable soil on the island, we face the same dilemma as our forbearers – how to reduce costs and meet the nutritional needs of the troops and contractor personnel stationed here.”

With the revitalization of the hydroponics lab, Little thinks a shift could be on the horizon for Ascension Island.

“In addition to having a virtually limitless supply of fresh produce and reducing the cost of transportation, morale is greatly improved knowing that produce, picked that very day, is awaiting everyone in the base dining hall,” said Little. “Hydroponics allows us to meet demands, reduce costs, and provide nutritional value for our personnel.”

The 45th Space Wing's Ascension Island Auxiliary Airfield looks quite similar to Mars, per5 it's physical characteristics. Food must be flown in because the topography of the island isn't able to grow food organically. However, a team from the 45th Mission Support Group's Detachment 2 has revamped the hydroponics lab so that fresh vegetables can be grown and consumed by the 700 inhabitants of the volcanic island.

Ads the team continues to experiment with different plantings, they hope to expand the size of the lab and the list of what they’re able to grow.

“If we were to operate at a full greenhouse capacity, we could produce enough

fresh produce to feed the entire population of Ascension Island,” said Little. “That’s about 700 people.”

For the 45th Space Wing’s Ascension Island Auxiliary Airfield, neither the sky, nor Mars, is the limit.
