— The Space Observer has been an integral part of communication to the local base community for the past 38 years. The paper has documented various incoming and outgoing commanders and command chiefs.

It has paid tribute to the awards and contributions of our Airmen and Guardians. Historical moments were reported, including the formation of the U.S. Space Force, the merging of the 21st and 50th Space Wings into Peterson-Schriever Garrison and the base name change from Peterson Air Force Base to Peterson Space Force Base. As the sun sets on the Space Observer, a new dawn will rise with the Space Orbital on Oct. 7, 2021.

USAF mountaineers discuss resiliency at Wingman Day

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Rob Marshall and U.S. Air Force Maj. Colin Merrin, two mountaineering experts from the U.S. Air Force Seven Summits Challenge Team, are scheduled to speak during Wingman Day, Oct. 7, 2021.

Wingman Day, an Air Force tradition held twice a year, aims to strengthen unit morale and build resilient leaders. The Seven Summits Challenge consists of climbing the highest peak on every continent – a feat that requires a great deal of resilience.

The Air Force team started the Seven Summits Challenge in 2005 with Mount Elbrus, Russia, and completed the challenge in 2013 with Mount Everest, Nepal.

“The challenge was to take the Air Force and (the) American Flag to the highest point on every continent,” said Marshall. “The idea was never for me to climb all seven summits, it was originally just to get a team together to do it.”

The members of the Air Force team changed regularly, but as the team lead, Marshall was always a consistent member. Marshall summited six of the seven peaks with the team, but was not able to join the team in Alaska for the Denali climb in 2008.

“No one was able to completely build their schedules around the climb.

The needs of the Air Force came first,” said Marshall. “Our goal was to be inclusive, so if somebody wanted to come on a climb a few years into the challenge, we would welcome them.”

In May 2021, Marshall set aside time to finally climb Denali, making him the first and only servicemember to complete the Seven Summits Challenge.

Towberman focused on the five objectives outlined in the Space Force’s human capital management plan, termed the “Guardian Ideal,” released earlier in the day.

The Guardian Ideal is the Space Force’s foundational document, outlining the service’s boundary-pushing, innovative approach to talent management from accession to development. It combines aspirations with actions and milestones.

The five objectives described in the Ideal are Connect in a Collaborative Environment, Lead Digital Enablement, Generate and Engage Talent, Develop and Employ Talent, and Integrate Resiliency.

Towberman shared his interpretation of how those objectives apply to Guardians and the future of the force.

“Building diverse teams is central to the Space Force; it’s the center of the Guardian Ideal,” Towberman said. “It’s about teamwork. It’s about love. Nobody lays down their life because it’s their job.”

All Guardians are called to serve, said Towberman, and their commitment is to their teammates. That’s why the Guardian Ideal focuses on developing the individual to be the best version of themselves because strong individuals build strong teams, and strong teams build a strong Space Force.

Towberman closed out his address to the audience discussing integrated resiliency. He shared a recent interaction with a teammate who noticed he was having an off day and asked him if he was OK. “If you never pay attention to what’s normal, you will never know what’s not normal,” said Towberman. “You have to be looking out for each other—always, because that’s how you’ll see the stuff that is not normal. That’s how you’ll notice.”

2021 Fire Prevention Week schedule

Schriever Space Force Base, Peterson SFB and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station are participating in Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 3-9, 2021. This years theme is: Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Fire and Emergency Services from Schriever Space Force Base, Peterson SFB and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station will host a week of activities designed to educate base personnel about simple, but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 3 – 9, 2021.

The Schriever, Peterson and Cheyenne Mountain fire departments encourage all Airmen, Guardians, Department of Defense civilians, contractors and their families to embrace the 2021 Fire Prevention Week theme: Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.

“It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.” said Michael Bryant, 50th Civil Engineer Squadron fire inspector.

“When an alarm makes noise—a beeping sound or a chirping sound—you must take action. Make sure everyone in the home understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond. To learn the sounds of your specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, check the manufacturer’s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online.”

Front Range Fire and Emergency Services are sharing safety tips to help the community “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.”

• A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.

• A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.

• Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.

• All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.

October is Energy Awareness Month

By Abdelwahab Irshid | 50TH CIVIL ENGINEER SQUADRON SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo — National Energy Action Month, also known as Energy Awareness Month, has been observed during October since 1991.

The year’s theme is "Energy Able Mission Capable", which serves as a call to action for Schriever Space Force Base, Peterson SFB and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, personnel to practice energy efficient habits in their daily lives work or at home.

Energy Awareness Month is a time for Guardians and Airmen to put energy efficient habits to practice especially with cooler weather approaching.

The Schriever SFB Energy Team is looking to the base populaces to provide ideas on how to save energy and water through energy management, building optimization, energy resilience and the use of advanced and distributed energy technologies.

Energy and water are critical to the Front Range bases’ ability to accomplish its mission – to provide the global presence necessary to ensure stability, deter potential adversaries and present options in times of crisis.

Through improved energy efficiency and increased utilization of renewable energy at the Front Range bases and their geographically separated units, the installations gain two advantages: Strategic Advantage - Diversifying our energy supply to incorporate alternative energy sources like renewables, LED’s and ground source heat pumps, so that we can continue operations in the event of a commercial grid failure.

Force Protection Advantage - Transforming energy usage and innovating base systems improves our energy

resiliency, reducing vulnerabilities to base Guardians and Airmen, providing a reliable source of energy and water to base facilities.

Transform the way you use energy by implementing these tips: Report lights left on to your civil engineer customer service and base energy manager. Automatic controls or a different type of lighting system may fix the problem.

2. Use natural daylight and reduce or eliminate artificial lighting when possible.

3. Close your blinds and drapes at night in the winter to keep the cold air out.

4. Don’t set your thermostat to a colder setting than normal to cool faster. It will not cool faster and will just use more energy.

5. When you leave the room, turn the fan off. Letting it run wastes energy and does nothing to cool the room.

In fact, the heat from the motor actually warms the room a little.

6. Set the fan speed of your central air conditioner on high. When it’s humid, set the speed on low; you will get less cooling, but more moisture will be removed from the air which will make it feel cooler.

7. Don’t speed. For every mile-per-hour over 55 mph, the average vehicle loses almost two percent in gas mileage.

8. Conduct a simple do-it-yourself energy audit of your home or office to pinpoint where energy is being lost.

Most of his career, however, was spent on active duty as an Air Force special operations pilot.

Marshall said the impact of completing the challenge helped shape his life off the mountain as well, and attributes his lessons learned to a phrase he coined: ‘active resilience’.

“Active resilience, to me, is regularly and repeatedly building your resilience through intentional challenge,” said Marshall. “It doesn’t have to be a tall mountain.”

The goal of finishing a book within a week or waking up early every day to run are just some of the smaller ways Marshall continues practicing active resilience in his daily life.

“Those little challenges are what keep me sharp – what keeps my mood positive and healthy,” said Marshall.

Marshall initiated opportunities throughout his career to pass on his knowledge of the outdoors and unique ways of overcoming adversity.

He also served as a business and leadership instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy and focused on growing the academy’s mountaineering program into one of its largest clubs.

“That was my favorite opportunity to teach young men and women – future Guardians and future Airmen – how to reach the summit of a peak in all kinds of conditions, and how to grow personally and professionally from it,” said Marshall.

Merrin, another member of the Air Force team, will be sharing his experiences at Wingman Day as well.

Merrin was with the team when they completed the challenge on Mount Everest in May 2013. He recalled many climbers operating with blinders on – experiencing life in a bubble – with only one objective in mind: getting to the summit.

“Sure, we were there to climb the mountain, but there were so many neat things along the way that you could pick up and take away from it,” said Merrin. “That’s the case for any goal that you set out to do. It doesn’t have to be mountains.”

Merrin is currently the director of staff for Space Delta 2 – Space Domain Awareness at Peterson SFB. He first heard about the team in 2008 when he was stationed in Montana.

Air Force Maj. Andrew Ackles, a member of the Air Force team and friend of Merrin’s, reached out to invite him on the 2008 Denali climb, but a scheduling conflict hindered Merrin from joining. Merrin kept in touch with Ackles in hopes that another opportunity would arise.

Over the next few years, Ackles and Merrin climbed several impressive mountains together including Mount Rainier in Washington as well as the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc of the Alps in Europe.

Merrin also went on to summit Aconcagua, Argentina – one of the Seven Summits.

By late 2012, the team was starting to plan the Mount Everest climb. Ackles offered up Merrin’s name to Marshall, and in early 2013, Marshall set up an ice climbing trip in Ouray, Colorado, to examine Merrin’s skills.

“They had a lot of people interested that didn’t have any mountaineering experience. So they had to be selective about who they brought on the team for safety reasons,” said Merrin. “After that, (Marshall) was like, ‘oh yeah, this guy is definitely coming’.”

Merrin’s motivation to join the Mount Everest climb was not because it was one of the Seven Summits or the highest point on Earth. It was what the Air Force team stood for that inspired him to accept the invitation.

“There are plenty of mountains that are fun to climb and great to experience,” said Merrin. “But it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down to be a part of

Despite Merrin feeling physically fit and mentally capable to conquer Mount Everest, a respiratory infection forced him to stop climbing at 28,000 feet during the final push to the summit. Merrin contracted the illness after sharing his water with someone who needed it.

“I think that has changed me quite a bit, as far as how I approach goals in general,” said Merrin. “Life is really about experiencing a broad range of things.

Don’t be afraid to fail.”

Merrin said that the journey to the many personal summits in life may not always go according to plan, no matter how much we prepare, but for the aspects that are outside our control, the only decision we can make is how we choose to react to them.

Marshall and Merrin’s advice to others is to deconstruct a problem into smaller pieces rather than look at it as a whole. Much like they conquer mountains, the two mountaineers say life’s problems are best solved one step at a time.

“The summit isn’t the end all be all and that’s a hard lesson to come by,” said Marshall. “When I was younger it was all about getting to the summit and now, it’s very cliché, but the journey is what’s important. You can’t climb Mount Everest in a day.”
