U.S. Space Command recognizes establishment

John W. “Jay” Raymond, U.S. Space Command commander, recognized the establishment of the nation’s 11th combatant command in a joint ceremony at Peterson Air Force Base, Sept. 9 2019. The USSPACECOM mission is to deter aggression and conflict, defend U.S. and allied freedom of action, deliver space combat power for the Joint/Combined force, and develop joint warfighters to advance U.S. and allied interests in, from, and through the space domain.

Following the formal establishment ceremony in the White House Rose Garden on August 29th, today’s ceremony provided an opportunity for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines to hear from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. and Gen. Raymond on the importance of the USSPACECOM mission.

“The enduring mission of the Defense Department is to provide combat credible military forces that deter war, protect

the nation, and respond if deterrence fails,” said Dunford.

“As General Raymond and others have been saying for years, ‘we can no longer take our access to space for granted.’ Space is a contested domain. The implications to that fact affects our ability to fight and win on future battlefields. In that context, we didn’t re-establish U.S. Space Command simply to compete in space. We formed this command as a foundational element of more effective joint warfighting.”

The USSPACECOM mission is to deter aggression and conflict, defend U.S. and allied freedom of action, deliver space combat power for the Joint/Combined force, and develop joint warfighters to advance U.S. and allied in-

terests in, from, and through the space domain.

“We find ourselves at a strategic inflection point, where there is nothing we do as a joint force that isn’t enabled by space. Yet, simultaneously, we can no longer have the luxury of assuming space superiority,” Raymond stated as he addressed several hundred in attendance. “The mantle of responsibility that has been passed is heavy indeed. This command will have much to do with the preservation of our nation’s ability to preserve peace, assure our freedoms, and guarantee the sovereignty of the United States for future generations.”

With a first Command salute, Gen Raymond’s words were felt deep through the ranks, “Let’s get to work.”

Speak life

By Chief Master Sgt. Jacob Simmons | 21ST SPACE WING PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — I was reminded recently how foolish it was to say as a child that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

I didn’t believe it then, when I said it on the playground in response to a bully, and I don’t believe it now when I hear someone try to tear another down. Even back then, there were lines you couldn’t cross. The wrong poke became, “fight’n words!” For instance, you couldn’t talk about nobody’s Mama.

Playtime ceased immediately and, as our General Goldfein says, “Fight’s on!” You just don’t mess with family. Guess what, you are my Family. And I will fight for you!

Words shape the atmosphere. They are powerful. They are lasting. They change the environment. Words can carve or they can cut: two sides of the same blade. Scripture says that the power to give life and death is in the tongue. So, I ask you, what are your words saying to and about your Airmen, your peers, your leadership teams your family? And what are you saying to and about yourself? What are you setting into motion – life or death? Speak life.

I’ve been told time and again that it’s all about actions and deeds, when it’s our words (both spoken and written… or posted) which flow directly from the abundance of our hearts. I submit that motives are in the mouth, not the hand.

You mean what you say. Speak life.

It’s proverbial to hold our tongues and it’s often wise to withhold judgement. Patience, empathy and a measure of grace can run their course when we simply spend time at someone’s feet before assuming to know what it must be like to walk in their shoes. My dear mother (may she rest in heaven) taught me that if you can’t find something to speak well of

another, then it’s best to just keep your mouth shut. Freedom of speech is NOT freedom from consequence. There are repercussions and effects. Words matter, even when taken out of context. It really doesn’t matter much if words take f light with good intentions; as T.S. Elliott stated, “Most of the evil in this world is done by people with good intentions.”

Speak life.

While physical scars heal and broken bones mend, the emotionally-deep bruise from abuse can be life crippling. But there are those that just feel the need to pile on. Why add insult to injury? It does absolutely no good to kick someone when they’re down. In fact, if we back someone who is wounded into a corner with no other way out, why would it be a shock when they lash out. When someone is hurting, help them up. Talk them off the ledge. Speak Life.

The counter argument I often hear is that we’ve grown too soft and sensitive, too politically correct. That those who manage their mouth are somehow weak. We say that the one who “tells it like it is” had the courage to say what needed to

be said, and somehow, we are all the better for it. The truth may be that they are only telling it like they see it, not how it is. We sometimes put too much of a premium on our own perspective. The truth doesn’t have to hurt. Speak life.

Perhaps we should all try harder to speak in proportion to the tools we’ve been graced with to hear. Let’s do more listening to people. Let’s find out what the person beside us is thinking about and interested in. Let’s ask them what’s working and what ideas they have to fix what is not working. Let’s hear them out and just maybe we’ll keep them all in! Let them Speak life.

How do you know if you’re speaking life? Watch your words. I mean literally with your eyes, watch them to see where they go and what they do. See if they are falling on deaf ears or if the seed takes root in someone else and grows into the change you’re hoping for.

Our words need to be life giving, uplifting, encouraging and inspiring. We’ve tried it the other way and it hasn’t worked out so well.

Today, if you come to me and say, “I need to talk,” or, “I need some help,” fight’s on and I will be there for you because you are my family.

167th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron mobilizes for Hurricane Dorian support

By Maj. Holli Nelson | WEST VIRGINIA NATIONAL GUARD PUBLIC AFFAIRS CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Six members of the 130th Airlift Wing’s 167th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron mobilized today to support Hurricane Dorian relief efforts over the next two weeks.

The aeromedical evacuation team and ground crew support personnel will be staged out of MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, alongside crews from the Wyoming, Minnesota and North Carolina Air National Guards, to deploy wherever assets are needed in the storm-affected areas to include the eastern seaboard of the United States and the Bahamas.

This mobilization will increase the number of West Virginia National Guard personnel mobilized in support

of hurricane response and recovery efforts to 14. A team of eight Soldiers are currently providing aeromedical evacuation and search and rescue support in South Carolina with two UH-60L Blackhawks and two crews.

"The West Virginia National Guard has a proven track record of being ready and responsive when disasters strike, no matter whether it’s here in West Virginia or elsewhere in the United States," said Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, the Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard. "In times of need, the National Guard synchronizes with local first responders, governments and civilian agencies to provide a comprehensive approach to disaster response and recovery. This mobilization of our Army

and Air National Guard personnel for hurricane response is another great example of the importance and relevance the West Virginia National Guard."

The 167th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron is one of nine Air National Guard aeromedical evacuation squadrons in the Air Force’s inventory. Their primary mission is to provide lifesaving in-flight patient care worldwide in response to contingencies and humanitarian emergencies. These specialized teams, consisting of flight nurses and aeromedical evacuation technicians, can operate on a number of U.S. Air Force aircraft including the C-130H/J, C-17 Globemaster III, KC-135R, KC-10 Extender and the C-5 Galaxy.

MHS GENESIS goes live at

next wave of military treatment facilities

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The Military Health System’s new electronic health care record, MHS GENESIS, went live at four new sites on September 7. David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base; Naval Health Clinic Lemoore at Naval Air Station Lemoore; U.S. Army Health Clinic Presidio of Monterey, all in California; and the 366th Medical Group at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, are part of “Wave Travis”, named for the largest wave participant site.

“It’s important when implementing a solution of this magnitude to remain focused on the customer; our clinicians and patients. It’s really not about IT. It’s about the patient,” said Bill Tinston, Program Executive Officer of the Defense Healthcare Management Systems. The Program Executive Office, Defense Healthcare Management Systems,

is the organization tasked with acquiring and deploying a modernized, commercialoff-the-shelf, single system electronic health record across the Department of Defense.

Once fully deployed, MHS GENESIS will provide a standardized, advanced electronic health record to more than 9.5 million Department of Defense beneficiaries, while providing an advanced platform for approx­ imately 205,000 MHS staff globally. It enables the application of standardized workflows, integrated health care delivery, and data standards for the improved and secure electronic exchange of medical and dental patient data across the continuum of care, from point of injury to the military treatment facility.

Most importantly, MHS GENESIS enhances patient experience of care. In addition, the new system will increase efficiencies and improve patient safety.

MHS GENESIS utilizes the same software under development by the Department of Veterans Affairs for that agency’s new electronic health record system, and will be interoperable by default. When fully deployed, information between the two health care systems will be passed securely, conveniently and easily, helping to ensure a warm handoff of service members into the VA system of care.

MHS GENESIS also enables patients to access their medical records remotely through the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal.

The system will drive better integration and standardization of care, with patients experiencing consistent and high-quality health care regardless of location.

providers. New releases and/or significant upgrades can be expected at least twice a year with smaller configuration changes made more frequently. Depending on the scope and content of the release, these events can be considered minor “go-lives.” They will require some level of build, testing, training, and operational readiness activities.

Following rigorous testing, training and change management efforts during initial rollout in the Pacific Northwest, MHS leaders cite changes in training as key to addressing many of the system’s initial challenges.

“Those initial sites gave us critical feedback that informed significant improvements and upgrades in training, workflows, and overall change management strategy,” said Air Force Maj. Gen. Lee Payne, the DHA’s assistant director for combat support and the MHS GENESIS functional champion. “We’ve improved our computer-based and our instructor-led training, with very positive feedback.”

Payne said the implementation of a peerto-peer support strategy has paid off, as well.

“We are also using a KLAS recommended ‘peer expert’ model where individuals are trained by experts whose job functions are similar,” he explained. For example, an emergency physician will train other emergency physicians; and front desk clerks will teach other front desk clerks, which capitalizes on peer-to-peer support.

Tinston said of the current activity around deploying MHS GENESIS to the next wave of military treatment facilities, “Working with the functional community, we have made significant strides since our initial site deployments. We enhanced our training, as well as ensured the network is ready for full system implementation. We have the right people in place, and I look forward to the continued implementation throughout the Military Health System.”

MHS GENESIS deployment activities for subsequent waves will kick off approximately every three months starting Spring 2020. Full deployment across all military hospitals and clinics is expected by the end of 2023. The next three waves involve additional facilities in California, Nevada and Alaska.

​LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE – EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The U.S. Air Force’s Rocket Systems Launch Program (RSLP) office, part of the Space and Missile Systems Center Launch Enterprise, awarded a $4.9 million contract to Aevum, Inc. today for the Agile Small Launch Operational Normalizer (ASLON)-45 space lift mission via RSLP’s Small Rocket Program-Orbital (SRP-O) framework. The ASLON-45 mission will provide orbital launch services in support of the Department of Defense Space Test Program and other Government agencies; improving the DOD’s real-time threat warnings.

SMC originally selected Vector Launch, Inc. for the award; however, Vector formally withdrew on Aug. 26, 2019. The RSLP used the Federal Acquisition Regulation Part 13.5 Simplified Acquisition Procedures to expedite another award to deliver affordable innovative warfighter capabilities faster.

“We re-awarded this mission in just 14 days, with no impact to launch or mission,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Rose, Small Launch and Targets Division Chief. “My team is working hard to make contract awards faster and this is an outstanding example of how we exemplify resiliency and flexibility in our contracting and acquisition practices,” she added.

This will be the first U.S. Air Force mission for Aevum, Inc. and will be launched from Cecil Air and Space Port in Jacksonville, Fla. The initial launch capability of the ASLON-45 mission is scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.

“The Small Rocket Program-Orbital framework provides orbital launch services to academia, DOD, and other Government agencies for operations, research, development, and test missions and is a shining example of SMC’s drive to provide innovation and partnership across the Enterprise faster than ever before,” said Col. Robert Bongiovi, director of SMC’s Launch Enterprise. “These orbital missions, like ALSON-45, can be used to directly support the warfighter and demonstrate new weapon system technologies and concepts.”

Peterson museum’s POW artifacts: A reminder of Airman resilience

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In the month of September, when our military honors our prisoners of war and missing in action, I always reflect on the Peterson Air and Space Museum’s collection of items brought to us from surviving World War II Airmen. Even though the use of airpower helped the Allied forces secure victory, this became the war in which more American Airmen were captured than any conflict before or since. Some brought back reminders of their imprisonment, and we’re fortunate to be able to share those reminders with our visitors.

U.S. Army Air Corps Lieutenant R.J. “Bud” Gaston from Los Angeles, California made his “Kriegie” [prisoner] cap while he was a POW in Luft II in Sagan, Lower Silesia, which is now modern day southwestern Poland. His sewing talents came from watching his grandmother and an “old country” tailor who altered clothing.

Bud pieced together his cap using materials from his own worn out uniform slacks, GI wool socks, and leather from flying boots cut to create the front bill. He pulled gold thread from a sweater and embroidered the officer’s cap insignia on the front. Gaston was liberated in 1945, after spending almost three years in the Nazi POW camp, still wearing that cap. He donated it to us in 1991.

Lieutenant Elmer “Swede” Olson, a Peterson Field

alumnus, flew 39 combat missions with the 23rd Photo Reconnaissance Squadron before he left Valence, France, on Sept. 21, 1944, to photograph German defenses along the Rhine River. While flying over his first target, his instrument panel was completely destroyed by anti-aircraft weapons.

Halfway through his mission, he received more hits to his left engine. Now f lying with only his right engine powering the plane, he approached the end of his target run. A direct hit exploded the hydraulic tank behind his head, spreading fire through the cockpit, burning his right arm, neck, and face. He bailed out of his burning plane and the Germans immediately captured him. He was imprisoned in Stalag Luft I, in Barth, Germany, until liberated May 5, 1945. He lost 80 pounds in captivity. For his mission, Olson was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. His family donated his decorations, official military photo, and prisoner personnel record. Today, you can witness the courage of that defiant Airman from Cripple Creek, Colorado.

memorates the crew of the bomber he was shot down in over France on Sept. 9, 1943. “Tar Fly” was hit by 88 mm anti-aircraft fire and had to leave the formation to return to England. They were jumped by German fighters, but Tar Fly shot down four of them before crash landing in an open field. A French boy, Rene Psarolis, watched the attack unfold.He spent years researching everything he could about that incident, and in 1999, Rene contacted Bill and sent him all he had found: the gun camera footage showing the shoot down, photographs of the crew, and film showing the crew being marched through a French town as they were taken to Stalag Luft I, where then Tech.

Sgt. Bill Sheave was imprisoned for the next two years.

Both men donated everything to our museum.

In July 1942, Capt. Albert Clark was second in command of the 31st Fighter Group, the first American fighter unit in the European Theater. He was shot down over Abbeville, France. As a POW at Stalag Luft III, he helped 76 Airmen escape on a moonless night in March 1944.

A book and later movie titled “The Great Escape” documented the breakout. He wrote his own memoir, “33 Months as a POW in Stalag Luft III.” When he became the sixth superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1973, Lieutenant General Clark ensured cadet curriculum included the lessons of leadership and survival common to POWs of all our armed conflicts. He started the POW special collection at the Academy. We have his hand built Stalag Luft III model here.

At the Peterson Air and Space Museum, these artifacts have become honored displays of our heritage, and a testimony to the resilience of American Airmen.

Impact of 9/11 remains in youth today

PATRIOT DAY GIVE BACK On Friday Sept. 6, Mt. Carmel honored 400 military & veteran families at our Patriot Day Give Back, an annual event recognizing the sacrifice of military, veterans and their families before and since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

During opening remarks, Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers shared Mt. Carmel’s positive impact supporting the military and veteran community in the areas of career and transition, behavioral health and supportive services. This followed a community information fair and breakfast highlighting Mt. Carmel’s partnered services.

Following opening ceremonies, more than 60 volunteers joined us to present

400 military and veteran families with two weeks of fresh produce, groceries, personal hygiene items and sports equipment, all courtesy of generous sponsors: Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, Feed the Children, and Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.

Extra items from the event were shared with non-profit community partners who help veterans including Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, and others.

BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — When we think of those affected by the events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, we typically think of the generation who were already adults. The truth is the events from that day will forever shake the generations to come.

“I lived in a small town in Texas at the time, and I just remember being scared,” said Airman 1st Class Whitney Hagood, 460th Force Support Squadron customer service technician. “I could not fathom why airplanes were flying into buildings; I could not understand why thousands of people were dying, and the thing I couldn’t understand the most is why someone would do that sort of thing.”

Hagood was 9 years old when the towers fell. This event changed a young girl’s perception, revealing the true danger in the world.

“When I figured out the intentions behind the attacks, I couldn’t believe that such animosity exists,” said Hagood. “I could only wonder how many people were going to continue to die and if I was going to die.

“My mother reassured me that our military would take care of us,” added Hagood.

“It was the first time I ever understood the purpose of the military; all I wanted was to help out like they did.”

When Hagood grew up, she did not join the military immediately. For many years, she carried the notion that she did not have what it took to wear the uniform, thinking that she could never be a hero, but still felt a desire to serve her country.

She decided to be a schoolteacher and shape the young minds of children. It wasn’t until after she married her husband that she experienced what it was like to be a part of the military community. After some self-re-

flection, Hagood decided to join the U.S. Air Force in 2018.

“I’m completely proud of the fact that Whitney joined the United States Air Force,” said Mark Hagood, her father. “Whitney needed to find her path in life, and she needed something that also have her a feeling of self-worth. Joining the military fulfilled both of those things and has helped her find confidence in herself.”

Public service, like the military or first responders, is on a volunteer basis. It takes brave men and women to step forward and be on the front lines when called to duty.

Hagood credits the military and first responders for getting the country through that hard time and showing the world there are still good people out there. Hagood believes younger generations are still joining today because of the events of Sept. 11.

“I think terrorism is something that is more apparent now than it was before, and I think it’s always going to be around,” said Hagood. “I believe our military and first responders are needed now more than ever.”

To honor those who lost their lives to the evil of Sept. 11, Hagood only wishes to spend her day in silence and mourn all who were lost.

“I sit in silence and reflect because the world stood still that day, there are no words to explain the horrors that happened,” said Hagood. “I believe the only way to respect those events is by staying silent.”

As we look back on Sept. 11 and the horrors that came with it, we owe a great debt to those who gave their lives on that day and to those who continue to take care of our country and protect the American people — we will never forget.

Keeping the pack strong: Your mental health teams

By Staff Sgt. Mackenzie Mendez | 8TH FIGHTER WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea — Editor’s Note: This is the first article in a series designed to highlight helping agencies and resiliency at Kunsan Air Base.

One in five adults in the United States, roughly 46.6 million, experience mental illness in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The Air Force’s Comprehensive Airman Fitness pillars are key to ensuring Airmen are taking care of each other while maintaining balance in their lives.

The 8th Medical Group Mental Health Clinic is at the center of the Air Force’s CAF model, providing the tools Airmen need to lead a healthy lifestyle while also ensuring the pack is fit to fight.

“As mental health professionals, we are responsible for educating Airmen, frontline supervisors and commanders about the resources available for managing the mental pillar,” said Capt. Josilyn Banks, 8th MDG Mental Health element chief and director of psychological health. “We are trained in conceptualization; analyzing every aspect of an Airman’s life and helping them focus on the whole Airman concept and create balance between all four pillars.”

As a specialty care clinic, mental health only sees a very small percentage of Airmen.

Sixty percent of mental health concerns are resolved at the primary care level with an Airman’s primary care manager or through the Behavioral Health Optimization Program, according to Banks. BHOP is a consultation service within primary care designed to target issues affecting optimal functioning.

Although mental health only sees a small portion of the Kunsan population, early intervention and prevention of stress and mental illness, such as depression, for all Airmen are top priorities for the clinic.

We talk about the concerns and come up with ways to focus on the needs of our location.”

The 8th MDG Mental Health clinic offers numerous classes open to Airmen of all ranks that specifically target concerns and trends seen at Kunsan. These courses cover topics such as relaxation and sleep hygiene, mindfulness and communication, and chronic pain management. Additionally, the ADAPT program provides responsible drinking education to Airmen, both as requested and to those referred.

In addition to classes, professional enhancement courses such as First Term Airmen Course have played an integral part in educating Airmen on maintaining

a healthy work-life balance as well as communicating mental health success stories.

“As our force becomes younger and younger, we want to focus on providing our Airmen with tools to help them manage what is going on in their lives,” said Capt.

Christina Kyc, 8th MDG Mental Health flight commander, ADAPT program manager and licensed clinical social worker.

“We encourage frontline supervisors to get involved and get to know their Airmen on a deeper level. By recognizing their goals and accomplishments, as well as when Airmen are struggling, leaders are better able to refer Airmen to applicable agencies for assistance when needed.”

Recently, Air Force senior leaders implemented a Resilience Tactical Pause with the purpose to increase Airmen connectedness and increase unit cohesion, trust and confidence in command teams while soliciting feedback to evolve the Air Force’s approach to decrease suicides and increase

the well-being of Airmen.

“The RTP gives us an opportunity to reconnect with helping agencies and focus on continuous resilience and continuous prevention,” said Banks. “By emphasizing the concept of ‘taking care of your people,’ we are one step closer to creating a lasting culture change surrounding mental health.”

The 8th MDG Mental Health clinic staff has three officers and five enlisted members, including an advanced nurse practitioner credentialed to prescribe medications. Enlisted mental health professionals also have the capability to teach and treat patients under their commissioned counterparts’ licenses.

“Due to the provider extender culture, we have been able to triple our access to people on base,” said Banks. “It extends our capabilities, trains our technicians and creates a more well-rounded office. It also increases our presence on the base by giving our technicians the tools to help and educate Airmen about mental health.”

Airman 1st Class Tyler Digby, Staff Sgt. Avery Morehead, and Master Sgt. Wynee Diaz — each of these Airmen had just a single moment to react, and each individually saved someone’s life in a moment of crisis.

For their actions in these moments, Airmen from the 45th Space Wing were recently awarded Melbourne Regional Chamber Valor Awards, which honor local first responders and military members.

After each citation was read, each Airman came on stage and humbly accepted their award.

Airman 1st Class Tyler Digby For Digby, 45th Security Forces Squadron installation entry controller, it started out as a normal perimeter patrol on a Sunday afternoon across Patrick AFB beaches.

Around 1 p.m., he immediately responded to a call stating that multiple children were being swept away from the beach by rip currents.

When Digby arrived to the scene, people were already providing assistance to those affected. Approximately five minutes later, he received another call for someone being pulled away by rip currents. Then another. And another.

Digby assisted his supervisor, his flight chief, Brevard County Fire & Rescue, Brevard Ocean Rescue and Patrick AFB Fire Department for a total of 12 calls.

“It was just back to back for two hours,” said Digby.

On the last call he and his supervisor were alone. Out in the distance they saw a man bobbing his head up and down in the water, trying to keep from sinking into the depths below.

Digby immediately took off his belt, holster, plate carrier, boots, and socks and plunged into the water. As he was wading in, he called to some surfers nearby to send their board his way. He battled waves and waters approximately 10 feet deep for what felt like hours. While the surfers were making his way to him, he used his strength to keep the man above the waves.

When the bystanders reached him, Digby heaved the man on the board. Away from land and with the team’s emotions high, he calmed them and directed the team back to shore.

Crawling back onto the beach, Digby then provided assistance to the other people who helped him, before he allowed himself to be checked by first responders.

“It was pure instinct,” said Digby. “Honestly, I wasn’t even thinking about what was going to happen to me. I was just fo-

cused on getting out there, getting to him, and getting him back.”

Digby was awarded the Medal of Valor.

Staff Sgt. Avery Morehead Staff Sgt. Avery Morehead, 45th Security Forces Squadron military working dog handler, and Military Working Dog, Tigi, were patrolling Manatee Cove on Patrick AFB when Morehead heard the call that a seven year old was unconscious on the golf course.

He responded to the call in less than 60 seconds to find bystanders performing chest compressions on what turned out to be a 70 year old man.

He immediately took over, performing chest compressions for minutes. Patrick AFB Fire Department arrived shortly after and checked the man’s pulse. It was weak.

Morehead’s chest compressions were the only thing keeping the man alive.

Then Brevard County first responders arrived, switched out with Morehead, and defibrillated the man three times before transporting him to a local hospital.

Morehead’s actions were critical in saving the man’s life.

“As soon as I saw that they were doing chest compressions on him I knew from that moment, that was it,” said Morehead.

“It was just ‘go in and get the job done,’ “said Morehead.

Morehead was awarded the Life Saving Medal.

Master Sgt. Wynee Diaz While deployed in Afghanistan, Master Sgt. Wynee Diaz heard an explosion.

The base was under attack.

Diaz looked outside and saw a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer in a state of shock. She immediately left shelter, grabbed the SNCO and pulled her inside. Diaz stayed by her side until the attack was over.

“I wouldn’t have done anything different,” said Diaz. “Our priority is to take care of each other. We’re all brothers and sisters out there."

Diaz doesn’t consider what she did in that moment to be extraordinary. Instead she shifts the focus to those still deployed.

“There are people still out there,” said Diaz. “A care package, or even a simple message goes a long way.”

Diaz was presented an Award of Merit.

It’s because of their ability to stay calm under pressure, demonstrating immeasurable courage, that three people are alive today.

After the ceremony, Digby, Morehead, and Diaz walked through the parking lot in their uniform, got back in their cars and prepared for the next day.

The 'total force' family

Scott Hollister looked out at the audience during his promotion ceremony with tears in his eyes and a smile on his face. Focusing on his family in the front row, his voice broke as he spoke to his brothers, Capt. Ryan Hollister and 1st Lt. Taylor Hollister.

“This means a lot to me because… my two brothers,” said Scott. “Ryan, he’s prior enlisted also, and what’s cool about this is that he’s cyber, I’m space, and Taylor, he’s on his way to pilot school. You’ve got air, space and cyber space.”

The three brothers share a special bond, one that was encouraged in their family background.

“We’ve always been outdoor enthusiasts.

We grew up in the Boy Scout program and each of us went on to earn our Eagle Scout,” said Scott. “We have fond memories of our father taking us out on awesome camping, caving and hiking trips.”

Scott recalled one particular incident that he felt drew them closer together as brothers.

“We decided to go to Aspen, Colorado, and hike the Maroon Bells,” said Scott. “We made our way up the first peak and realized that the traverse to the next peak was going to require actual rock climbing gear. Taylor and I were not prepared and decided to make our way back down to camp. Before we started our descent, we handed Ryan one of our two-way radios.”

While Scott and Taylor were napping at the campground, they heard Ryan call for help over the radio. According to Scott, their adrenaline was pumping as they prepared for a worst-case scenario.

“We realized that he was safely down from the mountain, but was very dehydrated and could not make it the rest of the way to the camp,” said Scott. “Taylor, who was a high school cross country athlete at the time, packed some water and started running up the trail to help Ryan. Once they arrived back to camp, Ryan told us his experience from the traverse and it turns out he truly thought he was not going to make it. This was an eye opening experience and an important lesson learned; never go alone while doing high risk activities.”

The brother’s adventures didn’t stop there.

When Scott was a junior in high school, he decided to enlist in the Air Force right after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. His older brother, Ryan, enlisted shortly after him.

“Taylor, after seeing his two older brother’s join, decided he wanted to fly in the Air Force at a very young age,” said Scott.

“We have all had a desire to do something bigger than simply going to school and getting a job after college. I think we have

After sewing on the rank of technical sergeant, Scott commissioned through the Deserving Airman Commissioning program. He left his position as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of training at the 19th Space Operations Squadron - 310th Space Wing - and went to the 380th Space Control Squadron as a new lieutenant. He then moved to the 379th Space Range Squadron, working as a Range Control Officer, and is now a traditional reservist with the 26th Space Aggressor Squadron at Schriever AFB. “Ryan and I always had leadership qualities growing up,” said Scott. “Once we realized what it took to be an officer, we knew it was our calling. We both learned so much from being enlisted Reserve Citizen Airmen and truly believe we were the backbone of the Air Force. There’s no doubt that we took the qualities we learned and are using them to be the best officers we can be.”

According to Ryan, it was humbling to see his brother pin on the rank of major, especially a year ahead of the curve.

“It’s a testament to his dedication, hard work and patriotism,” said Ryan. “I know he’s worked hard and sacrificed a lot to get where he is now, and he’s a great example to his family and those he leads. For him,

it’s all about the people he serves."

Even through the successes the brothers have experienced in their military careers, Scott said they have each encountered difficult trials that taught them to be resilient leaders.

"I believe this is what has made us who we are today. We realized that everyone around us has their own personal issues and are dealing with things that we couldn't possibly understand," said Scott. "Because

of this, we have come to learn what servant leadership really is. Taking care of people will always be our priority."

Scott's son, Trey, is currently in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and plans to attend college while sticking with the program. His goal is to commission, said Scott, and follow his passion in building or architecture as a Civil Engineer officer, continuing the family's legacy of service.

Combined Force Space Component Command established at Vandenberg AFB

By Maj. Cody Chiles | COMBINED FORCE SPACE COMPONENT COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, Commander, U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM), ordered the establishment of two subordinate commands to support the warfighting efforts of the command — Combined Force Space Component Command (CFSCC), and Joint Task Force Space Defense (JTF-SD), immediately following the establishment of USSPACECOM Aug. 29, 2019.

Raymond appointed Maj. Gen. Stephen N. Whiting as CFSCC Commander, and Brig. Gen. Matthew W. Davidson as the Deputy Commander; with a mission to plan, integrate, conduct, and assess global space operations in order to deliver combat relevant space capabilities to Combatant Commanders, Coalition partners, the Joint Force, and the Nation.

Upon establishment, Whiting appointed Chief Master Sgt. John F. Bentivegna as the CFSCC Senior Enlisted Leader.

Bentivegna will advise the Commander on matters influencing the health, welfare, morale and effective utilization of more than 17,000 CFSCC personnel.

CFSCC will plan and execute space operations through four distinct and geographically dispersed operations centers, including: the Combined Space Operations Center (CSpOC) at Vandenberg AFB, Calif.; Missile Warning Center (MWC) at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colo.; Joint Overhead Persistent Infrared Center (JOPC) at Buckley AFB, Colo.; and Joint Navigation Warfare Center (JNWC) at Kirtland AFB, N.M. Additionally, the CFSCC will execute tactical control over globally dispersed Air Force, Army, and Navy space units that command satellites in every orbital regime.

“It is an honor and privilege to take command of CFSCC. We are at the dawning of a new, exciting, and challenging era for space; and CFSCC will lead USSPACECOM’s efforts to better integrate space warfighting effects into the operations of terrestrial warfighters,” said Whiting. “Through our tactical units and operations centers, CFSCC will provide space capabilities such as space situational awareness, space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, environmental monitoring, military ISR, navigation warfare, command and

control, and PNT in support of USSPACECOM and the other Combatant Commands.”

As one of its primary roles, CFSCC will plan, task, direct, monitor, and assess the execution of combined and joint space operations for theater effects on behalf of the Commander of USSPACECOM in order to directly support ongoing operations in other Combatant Commands.

CFSCC will also provide support to, and receive support from, partner Coalition operations centers including the Australian Space Operations Center, Canadian Space Operations Center, and United Kingdom Space Operations Center.

Additionally, CFSCC will build capacity through Coalition, Commercial, and Civil partnerships to achieve combined force objectives.

Furthermore, CFSCC will execute command and control of assigned multinational forces in support of Operation Olympic Defender (OOD), as directed

by USSPACECOM. “Through the standup of the CFSCC and multinational force agreements in OOD, we will out-pace competitor nations in developing our space capabilities, generate greater space force capacity than our competitors, and integrate highly advanced multinational space capabilities with terrestrial coalition warfighting capabilities,” said Davidson.

“Last month the United Kingdom formally announced their decision to join Operation Olympic Defender, our named operation for space; and we are excited the Royal Air Force is now providing an officer to serve as the Deputy Director of the CSpOC. The U.K. is a close ally and trusted partner in space; and we are looking forward to additional allies and partners joining OOD in the near future. We are unequivocally stronger together.”

On 18 July the former U.K. Defense Secretary announced the U.K. formally accepted the U.S. invitation to join OOD; and the U.K.’s intentions to send additional U.K. personnel to join other international space operators at the CSpOC at Vandenberg AFB. Space operators from Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom are currently stationed at Vandenberg AFB, work-

ing alongside U.S. space operators in CFSCC’s CSpOC. Additionally, national liaisons from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are stationed at Vandenberg AFB in USSPACECOM’s Multinational Space Collaboration office.

“Space has become exponentially more congested, contested, and degraded domain during the past several decades.

Due to emerging threats, and advances in technology, it’s imperative that we partner with allies and like-minded nations to preserve access to space, and leverage coalition space capabilities to ensure warfighters down range have the systems they need to defeat the threats they’re facing,” said Bentivegna. “The establishment of the CFSCC is the result of years of working alongside allies and partners in and through space. As a coalition we will continue to defend our nations’ interests throughout the space domain.”
