Taking a resiliency knee

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Taking a knee in today’s society has multiple meanings. In football, a quarterback takes a knee to officially end a play, or, more recently, to demonstrate a political cause. Some service members take a knee as a loose form of security during a pause in a patrol, or a moment to reflect at the memorial of a fellow comrade in arms.

I’m old school, I believe taking a knee means pausing to reflect on things, taking a breather, or stepping back to consider a situation.

Right now the Air Force is being asked to take a pause to engage with our Airmen. The purpose of this pause is to increase Airmen’s confidence and competence in recognizing signs of distress, and enhance their ability to seek help for themselves and others. I believe this pause is like taking a “resiliency knee.”

I recently took a resiliency knee and spent some time back on the East Coast with my family. As I visited with in-laws, grandchildren, siblings and other family members, I witnessed several examples that will help us all be better wingmen and help us with our resiliency.

Watching three grandkids try to work out who would get dibs on Grammy and Pappy time was the first challenge. All three had specific and different requests, and as a grandparent it was hard to say no to any of their wishes. Luckily for us, a wise parent stepped in and said, “Let’s discuss this to work out a solution.” The parent simply asked their children to consider a couple of key items: you can’t always get your way, what are some alternative solutions, and how can we work together to find a workable solution.

The three grandkids sat with their mother as the facilitator and worked out a solution. They had open lines of communication, listened to each other’s ideas, and to some degree, showed respect for each other. Sounds like a typical day in

a lot of work centers. These actions could help reduce some stress in the work centers and help us all be better wingmen.

As my wife worked through a family issue with her parents and sister, again we had a situation where four distinctive personalities were involved. There was the team player, the head strong, the stubborn, and the “let’s just get the situation done and do it now.”

Did I mention I was on vacation?

As the situation unfolded, it was pretty clear the head strong player wanted things to go their way and that their way was the best way to fix the situation. The stubborn and the “let’s just get the situation done and do it now” were getting frustrated, while the team player tried to keep the peace and work a mutually favorable solution.

While the family situation is still moving toward a workable solution to this day, it’s an example of the dynamics we all see in our work centers. We all have different personalities, we all have different mission tasks with different time lines, and we all have different levels of adapting to stress. As in the previous example, some key elements of leadership or wingmanship come in to play. Listening to the message others are telling you, and understanding their message is critical. The message needs to have accurate information and supporting data. Again, working as a team allows for more open communication.

One last example concerns the communication in my relationship with my wife of 40 years.

My wife and I discussed her stress dealing with the family issues and my stress in dealing with all the work requirements. After 40 years of marriage, I have a pretty good read when my wife needs a listening ear and she has a good read on me when I need to open up. When my wife and I realize we both need to lend an ear, we both listen and didn’t rush to judgment. It can be hard to just listen, but it can go a long

way in helping release stress. It is safe to say we all have stress at home and work. If you don’t have stress, I would suggest you write a book and it will be a best seller.

I think it is important to point out none of us will have 40 years to get to know our Airmen, but it is vital we get to know them as soon as possible. By knowing them we can recognize changes in their behavior and attitude. Often, we need to just be active listeners, which may trigger some to engage and reveal their specific needs.

One of the most important things I have learned during my married years is to not tell my wife what to do. I will offer her encouragement and suggestions, but she does not like the directive approach. In the end, our goal is to help each other, and to look out for each other – kind of sounds like being a wingman.

We will all have the opportunity to be wingmen and offer suggestions on how to turn around the devastating suicide rate with the upcoming resiliency tactical pause. The focus for these small group discussions is twofold: First, to build connections with those in our units; second, to listen to each other on how we can all better support our wingmen and tackle this challenge.

You know best what will help our team and our Air Force, and leadership absolutely needs your open and candid input.

This is the start of a discussion. This is not training. Please engage in this opportunity to invest in those who work alongside you. Considering the current situation our military is facing with suicide, it is vital we all take a resiliency knee.

As Chief Wright stated in his powerful video, “it is our problem.” It is our problem and it is up to us to give our input, stay vigilant, and let our wingmen know we have their backs.

Handling emergencies one crisis at a time

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — When disaster strikes, the Air force divides into two categories — those who need help, and those who provide help.

Air Force emergency management specialists are among those who provide help. Their mission is to prepare, plan, train, educate and equip Air Force personnel to respond to, maintain mission capability during and recover from crisis situations.

Those situations can include major accidents, natural disasters, weapons of mass destruction and wartime chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosive attacks.

The section conducts several types of EM training: CBRN survival skills and emergency operations center procedures, as well as unit EM representative and unit control center requirements.

“Emergency management wears three different hats: emergency management, hazmat technician and CBRN,” said Staff Sgt. Zachary Griffin, 21st Civil Engineering Squadron emergency management operations noncommissioned officer in charge.

Emergency management specialists are considered a kind of emergency responder, but do not get them confused with first responders such as medical, police and fire department personnel.

“If there seems to be some type of hazmat or chemical related incident, the first responders won’t hesitate to call us to identify the material,” Griffin said.

There are four phases that emergency management specialists are trained for: prepare, respond, mitigate and recover.

“We develop contingency plans for dealing with emergencies and establishing pre-determined mobility, response and recovery procedures that can minimize causalities and damage, and help those affected by disaster,” Griffin said.

CBRN is the most common affiliation with EM. “Everyone typically knows us for CBRN and only see us when they are due,” Griffin said. “I enjoy this part of my job.

We all need the basic knowledge of CBRN.” Griffin was recently an instructor at Silver Flag at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, but his time there was cut short due to Hurricane Michael, which made landfall on October 10, 2018.

“I love teaching,” Griffin said. “With the knowledge I gained during my past deployments, I am able to help people. I appreciate the lightbulb moments with the students during class when they finally understand something that I am teaching.”

POW/MIA REMEMBRANCE WEEK

A pedestrian turnstile is now open near the North Gate from 7:15 — 8:15 a.m. and 3:15 — 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. This turnstile will be manned by members of the 21st Security Forces Squadron to provide circulation control. The turnstile will not be open on Air Force Space Command family days, holidays or during Peterson Air Force Base snow delays.

Only children, parents or escorts may depart or enter thorough the turnstile. All personnel entering the installation must present a military identification card allowing them access to the installation. Children under the age of 10 must be escorted through the turnstile. Children 10 and over must possess a valid dependent identification card to gain access to the installation. Children may not act as an escort for other children, only individuals 18 and older may escort personnel onto the installation if they possess a valid identification card. Additionally, Youth Center employees are only responsible for children registered in the school age program and signed up for transportation to school.

The risk is great, but the work is crucial

— In the office of the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron’s explosive ordnance disposal section, there is a wall that bears the names and faces of every EOD technician who has been killed in action since the beginning of the war on terrorism. On that wall hangs a memorial to one of their own: A1C Matthew Seidler, former 21st CES EOD technician.

Seidler was killed in action in 2012, serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. His name is treated with the reverence due to a fallen brother in arms.

Master Sgt. Kenneth Lewis II, 21st CES EOD logistics section chief said that because of that potentially grave result in making a mistake, they take their training very seriously.

However, the atmosphere isn’t grave inside the sweltering building where the EOD techs work and train. Staff Sgt. Lawrence Gress, 21st CES EOD team member, compares the energy and the camaraderie to what he experienced playing team sports when he grew up.

“It's kind of the same mindset as far as training,” he says. “We’re always practicing, constantly prepping for what I would call the big game, when our response is actually called or initiated.”

He and other Airmen in the EOD career field hold themselves to a different standard of physical fitness. They are required to complete a more extensive fitness test than normal, referred to as Tier Two. It’s a new program for Air Force EOD, and it includes tests of grip strength and endurance, as well as an exercise called “The Gruester,” which incorporates pushups, rolling and sprinting, all done with a 30-pound vest and a 50-pound bag.

“We have to work as a team at all times because we rely on each other to keep each other alive,” says Lewis.

Gress is from Manorville, New York, and he’s been in the Air Force for four years.

Coming out of high school, he intended to join the U.S. military, but he instead decided to attend college first. While earning his bachelor’s degree in criminology from the University of Tampa, he learned about the Air Force and what it could offer him.

“When school was ending, I still had the passion to join the military,” says Gress. “I was working two lousy jobs, and I basically looked at which one could get me out fastest.

But once I was in and seeing what the career was all about, that's when I knew I really wanted to do this.”

EOD responds to and addresses explosives threats in the U.S. and abroad.

According to Staff Sgt. Kyle Koski, 21st CES EOD team lead, that encompasses any direct attacks or threats, but it also includes responding to any found military ordnance in their coverage area.

The EOD team works from as far south as Pueblo, Colorado, to as far north as Arvada, Colorado, and the Denver area, supporting Air Force installations and the surrounding communities.

“The United States Air Force Academy is where most of our calls come from,” says Koski. “They do a lot of training with cadets.”

The EOD group often cross trains with U.S. Army EOD technicians at Fort Carson, Colorado. Koski says that sometimes the Army and Air Force have slightly different techniques, and exchanging information makes both stronger. The group also provides training to area police and sheriff’s departments, including the Denver and Colorado Springs Police Departments.

“They have a lot of access to training opportunities that we don't and vice versa,” says Lewis. “It’s definitely a focus for us

Training is crucial to the 21st CES EOD section, because when they’re called in, Lewis says it’s likely a worst case scenario. If they

are not competent, confident and capable of making decisions under pressure, people die.

“We’re the ones who are going to make sure that we save lives,” says Lewis, “and sometimes, the risk is great.”

Peterson firefighters are jacks-of-all-trades

— When a person thinks of firefighters, he or she might conjure images of burning buildings, big red trucks or cats stuck in trees, but the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron fire department knows there’s a lot more to a fire department than what meets the eye.

The firefighters on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, train every day to be able to respond at a moment’s notice.

They know how to handle every kind of scenario, from performing first aid to responding to a crashed aircraft.

“Once you reach staff sergeant, most of us have our airport and structural firefighting, emergency medical responder, emergency medical technician and hazmat technician certifications as well as wildland, ice water, swift water, high-angle and rope rescue certifications,” said Staff Sgt. Zachary Baldwin, 21st CES Fire Protection crew chief. “We kind of have to be jacks-of-all-trades.”

Not only do firefighters have a lot of situations to prepare for, but the 21st CES firefighters also have a lot of ground to cover.

“Every single firefighter assigned here and at [Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station] are staffed 24/7 and are prepared to respond to any emergency on or off base,” said Master Sgt. David Webster, 21st CES fire protection flight superin-

tendent. “Besides [Peterson AFB], we also support Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and miles and miles of wildlands, and we are also the Colorado Springs Airport’s sole fire support.”

Despite these challenges, Peterson AFB was named the best fire protection in Air Force Space Command in 2017, and in 2018 Cheyenne Mountain AFS earned the title of the best small fire station in the U.S. Air Force.

Firefighters not only need to constantly improve their education and career, but it is also critical for them to maintain their physical fitness. These Airmen have to be able to act swiftly while wearing gear that weighs anywhere from 50 to 70 pounds, not to mention having to be able to carry people, climb ladders and operate heavy machinery.

“At the end of the day, no one wants to look a person’s family in the eye and say they weren’t physically fit enough to get them out,” said Baldwin.

Webster said that no matter what the emergency, he trusts his wingmen are up to the task.

“I am 100 percent confident in my firefighters,” said Webster. “If anyone calls on their worst day, every single firefighter here is going to answer that call of duty and take care of you and the emergency.”

The Dirt Boyz’ road work produces concrete results

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — For most Airmen, walking around with a dirty uniform is a surefire way to incite the wrath of leadership. However, for the Airmen whose mission it is to keep the roads and sidewalks of Peterson Air Force Base in repair, things are a little different.

“They call us Dirt Boyz because we're not afraid to get dirty,” says Senior Airman Lemuel Travis, 21st Civil Engineering Squadron heavy equipment operator. “At the end of day, we come out with dirty uniforms. That's how you know that the job's done right.”

Travis, originally from Augusta, Georgia, has been one of Peterson’s Dirt Boyz for three years now. He does a little of everything: repairing potholes, sweeping the flight line and removing snow in wintertime.

“If we’re not maintaining the roads, they get in really bad shape,” says Staff Sgt. Corey Griffin, 21st CES heavy equipment supervisor. “If we don’t fix the roads, if we don’t clear the snow, people can’t come to work and continue their missions.”

All summer, the Dirt Boyz work under the blazing sun, and when the snow comes, they work 12-hour shifts in the freezing cold to clear the roads. It’s hard work, but Travis says it’s satisfying to see his work make tangible changes in the community.

Travis said he always wanted to be in CE and is currently pursuing a B.S. degree in civil engineering alongside his work.

He’s grateful for the opportunities CES offers him to explore different specializations and opportunities, something he would not have gotten had he gone to college instead of enlisting.

He also says he finds that the work challenges his problem solving skills. Every job is a little different, and every Dirt Boy approaches their tasks differently, but the mission objective remains consistent.

Colorado’s climate presents unique challenges for the Dirt Boyz and the roads on base.

“The main enemy of roads is actually water, because it can expand the cracks in the road surface, especially during the winter,” Travis explains. “As water melts, it gets into the cracks and freezes, expanding them even more.

Also, during wet season, the road surface becomes looser, increasing wear and tear.”

Lt. Col. Timothy Fryar, 21st CES commander, said he was grateful that Falzarano spent the day with CE, and had never seen a wing commander spend the whole day learning about what they do.

“The diversity of CE is crazy, it contains

13 Air Force Specialty Codes, so for him to be able to spend a full day with us, talk to the Airmen and find out why we are here and why it’s important is so critical,” said Fryar. “He will take this information and have a better understanding and appreciation for what we do every day. That way if we are ever under question, he is there as our defender, and that’s what every squadron needs.”

TRANSITION SPOTLIGHT A hand-up for Danielle

In 2017, Danielle McCarthy’s son returned home from college to Montrose, Colo., to care for her as she recovered from complications related to a medical procedure.

At the time, Danielle was responsible for the care of her husband, Air Force Reserve and Army Veteran David McCarthy, Jr. Tragically, David passed in 2017 from the effects of Gulf-War Syndrome. In the wake of tragedy, Danielle was forced to sell most family belongings, cash out her last $2,000 of pension, and relocate to Colorado Springs for medical care and to rebuild her life. In a short time, she launched a new business and now serves on several community boards. However, this past July, despite her best efforts, she was unable to pay her rent and looked to Mt. Carmel for help.

“There are a lot of great organizations that help veterans. But it was nice to walk into Mt. Carmel and just say, ‘I just need this boost up. That’s all I need,’ and I wasn’t made to feel I’d done anything wrong,” said Danielle. “Please understand - it does mean a lot. It is the small, little things that matter. Being back amongst veterans is amazing to me. What you do does make a difference; you made the difference that prevented me and my two sons from being homeless. Thank-you.”

Following a year of medical challenges, in August, Danielle successfully ascended the incline in Colorado Springs, gaining 2,000 feet elevation in less than a mile at grades of 45 to 65 degrees, to 8,590 feet. Mt. Carmel is grateful for the opportunity to lend a hand-up to Danielle and her children.

Most problems start small, so if the Dirt Boyz can find them early, they can fix them before the constant flow of cars turns a little crack into a big crack.

Travis also notes that the Dirt Boyz are a close-knit bunch. Due to the nature of the work, he and his group have a lot of cama-

raderie and mutual trust in one another.

“When you work with heavy equipment, you can't hear anything around you,” he says. “But we always have each other's back. That's what I like about the shop. That's what I like about Peterson.

Everyone here, we get along. And we don't complain about the work either. Everyone loves to do their job.”
