Deputy Secretary of Defense updates mask guidelines for DOD installations U.S. Department of Defense GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas —Statement by Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Jamal Brown on the Deputy Secretary of Defense Memorandum for Updated Mask Guidelines for All DOD Installations and Other Facilities: “Deputy Secretary Hicks has directed that all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in indoor settings at Department of Defense installations and facilities in areas of substantial or high transmission, as defined by the CDC, to protect against rising COVID-19 cases.

Today’s announcement applies to all service members, federal personnel, contractors, and visitors when indoors at all properties owned by the Department in those areas, in accordance with updated CDC guidelines.

All defense personnel should continue to comply with CDC guidance regarding areas where masks should be worn. The Department will review and revise all applicable Force Health Protection guidance to address the new CDC guidelines.”

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Frank Kendall was administratively sworn in July 28 as the 26th Secretary of the Air Force, placing him as the department’s civilian leader responsible for organizing, training, equipping and ensuring the welfare of nearly 700,000 Airmen, Guardians and their families.

He replaces John Roth, who served as the Acting Air Force Secretary for the last six months.

“I am both honored and humbled to serve as the incoming Secretary of the Air Force,” Kendall said, shortly following his swearing in.

Kendall’s first official day on the job was both brisk and busy.

By mid-afternoon, he had met with Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks; Under Secretary of the Air Force Gina Ortiz Jones; his predecessor Roth; Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr.; and Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond.

“With Under Secretary Jones, and alongside Gen. Brown and Gen. Raymond, I will be totally focused on ensuring that our Air and Space Forces can fulfill their missions to defend the nation against our most challenging threats, today and into the future,” Kendall said. “I will do everything I can to

strengthen and support the great teams of American Airmen and Guardians who have dedicated themselves to protecting our country.”

In the coming weeks, Kendall will fully define his priorities and focus on posturing both services for strategic competition, modernization and future budget adaptation to address global challenges.

His broad intent for the department was stated during his confirmation hearing with the Senate Armed Services Committee, May 25.

“If confirmed, my priorities would be straightforward and mirror precisely those articulated by Secretary of Defense (Lloyd) Austin as they apply to the Department of the Air Force – taking care of our people, mission performance and building teams,” Kendall said. “Our military is people first and foremost.”

Kendall’s past tenures include Pentagon tactical warfare program director, Strategic Defense Systems assistant deputy undersecretary and most recently, under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics and 10 years as an active-duty U.S. Army officer.

Update: AF Academy reopens to public Aug 2 U.S. Air Force Academy Public Affairs

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The Air Force Academy will open to the public August 2, nearly 17 months after closing to all but official business to safeguard its community during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re excited to welcome the community back to the U.S. Air Force Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Richard Clark, the school’s superintendent. “I’m proud of our Academy team for their incredible work to ensure a safe, successful environment for our cadets, faculty and families. Cadets have been back since last fall and we’ve learned to work in an environment focused on reducing COVID risks.”

In keeping with Defense Department guidance, all service members, federal employees, onsite contractor employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status, will wear a mask indoors at the Academy, according to Col. Christopher Leonard, commander of the 10th Air Base Wing – the Academy’s host unit.

“El Paso County, Colorado is designated an area of high community transmission,” Leonard wrote in a memo sent to all cadets and staff members at the base, July 29.

The 10th Air Base Wing is responsible for the health and safety of service members, families, faculty and cadets who live and work on the base.

With the reopening of the base, the Academy begins a gradual transition to normal operations in hosting the public.

The Academy Visitors Center, with informational displays and presentations, opens weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors are also welcome in the Arnold Hall food court, on hiking and biking trails, and at the stables and golf course.

Visitors may observe the cadet area from the chapel wall, athletic fields from the overlook parking areas, aircraft on permanent static display and ongoing Airmanship training.

Noon meal formations return with the start of the academic year Aug. 9.

Masks Required

Ongoing closures include the Cadet Chapel (undergoing renovation), the Planetarium, and the Harmon Hall Parking Lot. In all cases, services could be limited due to COVID restrictions.

Academy officials continue to monitor and evaluate risks related to COVID closely. As needed, additional measures will be enforced to ensure the success of the primary mission of developing Leaders of characters for the Air and Space Forces.

Academy gates open to visitors 5:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Aug. 2. Visitors are require to have a state-issued ID, Defense Department ID or passport, and random vehicle inspections may be required. Current Defense Department and Academy rules require all individuals to wear a mask inside Academy facilities.

Masks are required for all visitors while on the Academy, regardless of vaccination status and in accordance with DOD guidance.

The Falcon Athletics ticket office resumes regular hours of operation, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, in the Cadet Field House and online.

Air Force football hosts two practices open to the public, 9:30 a.m., Aug. 14 and 21 in Falcon Stadium. The Falcons open the season against Lafayette, noon, Sept. 4 in Falcon Stadium.

Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station is now a Space Force station and Peterson and Schriever are now Space Force bases, the end-result of an Air Force initiative for the burgeoning Space Force to establish its own culture and identity.

Delta 3 welcomes new commander Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Delta 3 – Space Electronic Warfare, held its change of command July 30, 2021, at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado.

During the ceremony, U.S. Space Force Col. Christopher Fernengel accepted command from USSF Col. John Thien, outgoing commander. Prior to taking command of Space Delta 3, Fernengel was the division chief for operational capability requirements for the U.S. Space Force Chief of Strategy and Requirements Office at the Pentagon.

The Space Delta 3 mission, part of the newly developed U.S. Space Force, is to conduct space electronic warfare. Space electronic warfare focuses on enabling and protecting the electromagnetic spectrum which allows space-based communications. Space Delta 3 includes both offensive and defensive space control operations.

Offensive space control is intended to prevent an adversary’s hostile use of space capabilities, while defensive space control focuses on identifying and geolocating interference with U.S. capabilities.

Space Delta 3 is comprised of the 4th Space Control Squadron, 5th SPCS, 16th SPCS and 721st Operations Support Squadron, also located at Peterson Space Force Base, and has about 300 personnel among its ranks.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Having previously been awarded Airmen of the Year by the Peterson-Schriever Garrison 2020 Annual Awards, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Giovanni Pacheco, 50th Force Support Squadron command support staff, has been chosen as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year for 2021.

Out of 35 enlisted Air Force nominees considered, a selection board at the Air Force’s Personnel Center ultimately recognized 12 Airmen based on superior leadership, exceptional performance and personal achievements. These esteemed Airmen represent the Air Force’s major commands, direct reporting units, field operating agencies and headquarters. They have competed up through several levels, from squadron to MAJCOM — all the way to the Air Force branch level.

The Outstanding Airman of the Year Ribbon is the highest personal ribbon of the U.S. Air Force, and is awarded to any enlisted member of the Air Force. It was created in 1968 by order of Secretary of the Air Force, Harold Brown — and the first presentation of the award occurred two years later in 1970.

In October, Pacheco will have been with the Air Force for three years.

“I was performing well, but I was bored and tired of the same old, same old — over and over again,” said Pacheco. “I didn’t feel like continuing with school, but felt that I really wanted to do something with my life. I didn’t have an immediate family member in the Air Force [or military], but I
