Public Health provides vigorous lifestyle programs

By Airman 1st Class Ryan Prince | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Medical Group Health Promotion office provides a multitude of programs virtually and at their classes in the Peterson Space Force Base fitness center.

The mission of Health Promotion is to provide evidence-based programs to optimize health and readiness; to foster an environment that values health and wellness, empowers individuals and organizations to lead healthy lives and to improve health, mission readiness and productivity.

“Each class is designed to not only increase awareness of the particular subject, but to also help participants learn how to overcome various challenges, how to establish goals, and how to implement small changes to not only be successful in their established goals; but how to progress in those goals safely and healthfully,” said Minda Parsons, 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron Health Promotion flight commander.

Health Promotion conducts body composition and resting metabolic rate assessments to tailor specific nutrition and exercise programs for individuals. For those with an injury or experiencing joint issues, those who want to get started or improve their fitness performance; anyone who needs nutrition counseling for

weight loss or to improve their overall nutrition can make an appointment with the exercise physiologist or registered dietitian.

Health Promotion’s programs include nutrition and fitness optimization, sleep hygiene, stress management, mindfulness, biomechanics of running, cooking classes and more. All classes are conducted by subject matter experts in the different fields relating to the programs.

“This is an organization with untapped potential to affect positive change throughout the garrison by promoting the four pillars of comprehensive Airman fitness,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Joel Foster, 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron commander. “All of the programs impact more than just one area of resiliency; which is why it is such a smart idea for Airman and Guardians to take advantage of what the specialists here have to offer, whether that includes nutrition classes or a tailored fitness program. Not only is this the share path to unit resiliency and operational readiness, but it helps us to become more effective in our personal live.”

The programs are available to all Department of Defense ID card holders.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Schriever Air Force Base, Peterson Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station received new names during the renaming ceremony at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, July 26, 2021.

The installations are now named Schriever Space Force Base, Peterson Space Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station.

The bases’ names changed as part of the overall initiative by the Department of the Air Force to establish a unique identity and culture within the U.S. Space Force, and more accurately reflect the important space missions performed

by Airmen and Guardians stationed there.

U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, Space Operations Command commander, presided over the ceremony, along with U.S. Space Force Col. Shay Warakomski, Peterson-Schriever Garrison commander.

“Although we are celebrating our new designation as Space Force installations today, we are also honoring the rich history we’ve built here on the Front Range and in the Pikes Peak Region,” said Whiting. “Our ties and connections to the past are indelible as Peterson, Schriever and Cheyenne Mountain have long served as the heart, eyes and ears of our national security interest in space.”

Peterson SFB’s history, and it’s evolution from air defense to space warfighting missions, dates back to World War II. Peterson SFB has played a central role in U.S. and allied national defense for decades. Today, Peterson SFB maintains a mission centered on the ability to defy gravity for operations in the air and space domains.

Operations Command, Space Delta 2 – Space Domain Awareness, Space Delta 3 – Space Electronic Warfare and Space Delta 7 – Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance.

“It is incredibly important to illuminate our past and to celebrate the accomplishments of those who have come before us, previous Guardians of the High Frontier, as well as recognize the community relationships both past and present that got us here today,” said Warakomski.

Like Peterson SFB, Schriever SFB has a rich history beginning in 1983. The base was previously named Falcon Air Force Station, an installation intended to provide a back-up control node for support of existing and planned satellite constellations, and to house an operations support center for NASA’s space shuttle.

Schriever SFB’s current mission centering combat power for space is executed by Joint Task Force-Space Defense, Space Delta 6 – Cyberspace Operations, Space Delta 8 – Satellite Communications and Navigational Warfare and Space Delta 9 – Orbital Warfare.

The history of Cheyenne Mountain dates back to 1956, when the initial mission of Cheyenne Mountain was to protect the country against the Russian threat and has since evolved into what it is to today, serving as North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command’s Alternate Command Center and as a training site for crew qualification.

“We have to build upon the legacy and history, the civic relationships and all that has made Peterson, Schriever and Cheyenne Mountain great as we move forward with a vision for the future,” said Warakomski.

Senate confirms Kendall to be Air Force Secretary

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Frank Kendall won confirmation from the Senate July 26 to be the 26th Secretary of the Air Force, placing an official with decades-long service in defense issues in the top civilian job at a time when the department is navigating new global challenges and widereaching modernization efforts.

The vote reflected both Kendall’s well-known record in previous active duty and policy jobs and his philosophy for leading the Department of the Air Force.

With his confirmation, Kendall will be able to more fully articulate his priorities and policy preferences for how best to position the Air and Space Forces to contend with China, Russia and other strategic competitors, as well as continue to modernize the force and adapt to budget pressures.

The broad strokes, however, are already known.

“If confirmed, my priorities would be straightforward and mirror precisely those articulated by Secretary of Defense (Lloyd) Austin as they apply to the Department of the Air Force – taking care of our people, mission performance and building teams. Our military is people first and foremost,” Kendall told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing May 25.

“With regard to mission performance, I believe the range and severity of the threats that we face and will face, the rapid pace of technological innovation, and the need to rapidly harness that technology in new operational concepts demand a sense of urgency and a like focus on getting our choices right,” he said during that hearing.

Kendall also committed during his confirmation hear-

ing that he would ensure the U.S. Space Force’s continued growth and evolution.

The two-year-old Space Force, Kendall said in May, is “a critical contributor to our national security. If confirmed, I’ll be honored to have a role in making it a success.”

While the Senate’s action marks the first time Kendall will work directly within the Department of the Air Force, he is hardly unfamiliar with the mission, the Department of the Defense and national security.

He previously served in a number of senior positions for the Department of Defense, including as the Pentagon’s No. 3 official for four years during the Obama administration.

Kendall assumes the seat occupied by John Roth, who has served as Acting Air Force Secretary since Jan. 20.

A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, Kendall served 10 years on active duty in the Army, a tenure that also included a stint teaching engineering at West Point. Kendall spent time in the Pentagon as director of the tactical warfare program before moving to become assistant deputy undersecretary for Strategic Defense Systems. Kendall also worked in the private sector in defense-related jobs, most notably as Raytheon’s vice president of engineering during the mid-1990s.

In addition to graduating from West Point, Kendall earned a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from The California Institute of Technology. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center as well as an MBA from C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

“The mobile app is convenient, accessible, and simple for you to use,” said U.S. Public Health Service Cmdr.

Teisha Robertson, a pharmacist with the Pharmacy Operations Division at the Defense Health Agency. “It’s like a pharmacy-on-the-go. It lets TRICARE beneficiaries refill and track their prescriptions anytime and anywhere.”

The mobile app is free. You can visit the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to download it.

To get started, log in to the app with your TRICARE Express Scripts username and password. If you don’t have an account, you can register for one. Once you’ve signed in on your phone, you can use the app to: Order prescriptions. You can view which prescriptions are due for refill or renewal, and reorder medications. If you have any questions about your order, you can connect with a pharmacist 24/7.

Track orders. You can track your current order’s estimated ship date and then track the order in transit.

Set up automatic refills. If your medications are eligible, you can set up and manage automatic refills through the app. Express Scripts will refill and ship prescriptions when 25% of your cur-

rent prescription is remaining. That way, you never run out of medication.

Pay bills. You can make secure payments from the mobile app. The app will show your current balance on your account. You have several payment options as well as the option to set up automatic payments.

Manage medications. You can set dose reminders that alert you to take your medication. This will help you stick to a steady routine and be less likely to miss a pill.

Move prescriptions to home delivery.

If you have an existing prescription at a military or retail network pharmacy, you may be able to request home delivery.

You can see which medications are eligible for home delivery within the mobile app. As stated in the TRICARE Pharmacy Program Overview, you can get up to a 90-day supply of most medications mailed to you for the applicable copayment with free standard shipping with home delivery. You can also see if your medication is covered through home delivery by using the TRICARE Formulary Search Tool. Keep in mind, some limits on home delivery may apply overseas.

The Rocky Mountain USAF Flight Training Center (aka Aero Club) offers a Private Pilot Ground School about every eight to nine weeks. Cost for the Ground School is $650.

While the course is a Jeppesen online course, you will meet with the instructor about every other week from 6-8 p.m. to go over course materials and have a chance to ask questions.

Completion of this course prepares you to take the FAA Written Exam with the endorsement from the instructor and satisfies the FAA minimum requirement for the Ground School portion.

After you pass your FAA Written Exam, you will have two years to complete the flying portion and pass the Check ride with an FAA DPE for your Private Pilot License requirements.

• EXTENDED DUTY CARE: Available during non- traditional hours for parents working temporarily extended or additional shifts to support the mission.

• DEPLOYMENT CARE: Air Force Family Child Care Deployment/Remote Child Care Support will provide additional child care hours for deployments/remote assignments.

Families are authorized 16 hours for pre-deployment, 16 hours each month of the deployment/remote assignment, and 16 hours post-deployment.

• AF FCC Deployment Child Care Support may be used once the member has orders and ends 60 days upon return from the deployment. AF FCC Remote Assignment Child Care may be used each month that the member is on remote assignment.

• Care is dependent on the availability of funding and availability of FCC providers.

• ANG/AFR HOME COMMUNITY CARE: Allows ANG/ AFR parents to use licensed and affi liated EDC homes during drill weekends.

• Care is dependent on the availability of funding and availability of FCC providers.

• RESPITE CARE: EFMP Respite care program is designed to assist Air Force families with short- term specialized child care (to help reduce the stress associated with caring for an exceptional family member) • DAF/A1SOC AND AFSVC/SVPY are launching an AF Family Child Care Initiative to increase the number of quality, available, and affordable child care spaces with an emphasis on recruitment and retention of FCC providers who provide full time child care. This will be implemented until September 30, 2021.

• INCENTIVE 1 - If a provider enrolls any child(ren) from the active CDC Unmet Need or any children who were supplanted from child care and the provider is providing full time care for these children, the provider will receive a onetime payment of $200 per child. Note: if the child(ren) do not remain enrolled for at least 3 months, the $200 payment is subject to repayment.

HEALTH PROMOTIONS CAMPUS DINING – A DINING OPTION FOR ESM MEMBERS • EVERYBODY LOVES CHOICES. Especially when it comes to food.

• Now active duty airmen have more choices as far as where to “spend” their ESM (Essential Station Messing) allowance. Here at Peterson AFB they take their meals at the Aragon Dining Facility.

• Now airmen have more choices under a Campus Dining System. They can eat at The Hub’s Dining Room, at the Colorado Pizza & Sports Grill in the back of The Hub, at the Greenside Grill & Smokehouse at Silver Spruce Golf Course, and at the Strike Zone Café at the Bowling Center.

• Campus Dining allows airmen to “spend” up to $6 for breakfast, $12 for lunch and $12 for dinner at any of the NAF dining facilities. Any amount over that set rate will be paid for by the ESM member. All airmen have to do is present their CAC at the register when paying. It’s important for airmen to know this new Campus Dining System does not impact their Dining Facility ESM. However, it does impact their food choices.

• The goal is for airmen who are authorized ESM members to have access to “healthier” food options where they work and play. Some food choices, like a large pizza or the Super Sampler at Colorado Pizza & Sports Grill, would not qualify for those “healthier” choices. Nor does “healthier choices” include special functions, alcohol, energy drinks, smoothies, specialty coffees, or juice bar. Please check with the wait staff before ordering.

have trained together. The training consisted of familiarization with litter carrying and radio etiquette, as well as other briefs throughout the day.

“We are very excited to build a platform of joint training with our sister service and look forward to future training opportunities across the Colorado Military Health System,” said Charity Harmon, 21st MDG medical emergency manager.

With COVID-19 cases in Colorado Springs declining, the medical group trains to ensure Airmen are ready for a “new normal” by building upon their skills to analyze their current disaster response and improve on their current planning, response and recovery operations.

“We have such a unique opportunity to expand our communications and preparedness across the Front Range,” said Harmon. “It is important that we take advantage of these opportunities to practice how we play with other agencies. Getting back to basics is one way we will facilitate building working and training relationships.”

The 21st MDG mission is to provide support to power by cultivating a thriving team through developing resilient and agile professionals who optimize medically ready forces, deliver trusted care and community health support.

“I believe this training will help me in the future by better preparing for the unknown,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Elsie Nelson, 21st MDG medical records technician. “Practicing skills we do not use every day will help us be more confident when it comes to an emergency situation and understanding our roles and responsibilities.”
