1st SOPS to receive 2021 AFA Citation of Honor

Sean Carter | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Delta 9 – Orbital Warfare’s 1st Space Operations Squadron was notified of its selection as a Department of Air Force-level winner for the Air Force Association’s 2021 “Citation of Honor” Aerospace Award, April 9, 2021.

The Citation of Honor dedication reads: “For the outstanding contribution of an individual or organization to the development of aerospace power for the betterment of mankind.”

In the squadron’s first year under the newly-formed U.S. Space Force, 1st SOPS members established never-before seen combat readiness standards through state-of-the-art tactics aimed at increasing the advantages of friendly forces over potential adversaries.

Critical to his organization’s success, U.S. Space Force Capt. Andrew Marin, 1 SOPS assistant director of operations, said, “Innovation and great ideas are not rank dependent; so many of our initiatives came from enlisted technicians and young officers – they are the tactical subject matter experts here.”

Furthermore, 1st SOPS was critical in designing a process that helps U.S. Space Command assess risks related to combat and how to best synergize forces across multiple domains—an endeavor which directly shaped a concept of operations for the National Defense Strategy task implementation.

Faces of Space: 1st Lt. Monica Callan

Monica Callan, Space Delta 3 – Space Electronic Warfare, 16th Space Control Squadron electronic warfare operations officer, never anticipated her path as an enlisted pharmacy technician would eventually lead her to becoming one of the first officers in the U.S. Space Force to deploy as a space liaison officer advising U.S. Marines in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command theater. As with many things in life, most plans never work out as they’re written down.

Hailing from the Bronx, New York, Callan’s plan was to go to college and figure out life along the way.

Shortly in to that first journey, she took a detour into the U.S. Air Force.

“I enlisted in 2012 as a pharmacy technician, when I decided I wanted to do something different and I wasn’t getting what I wanted out of college,” said Callan.

Though the military wasn’t initially in the cards for Callan, she received inspiration from her father, a combat veteran who deployed multiple times with both the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps from 2006 to 2014.

“My father had deployed a few times as a law enforcement officer to U.S. Central Command, but was eventually returned home after suffering injuries sustained in an improvised explosive device explosion,” said Callan.

“Because of his experiences, I saw the military as a bigger team that could challenge me. I wanted to be a part of that.”

After spending a few years in the enlisted ranks, Callan applied to and was accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy. She graduated from USAFA in 2018 and commissioned into the USAF as a space officer, landing her first assignment at the “Top of the World,” Thule Air Base, Greenland. While there, she served as a crew commander on the Upgraded Early Warning Radar, and as the deputy flight commander of mission assurance. She currently resides within the 16th SPCS, where she describes her job as something she never thought she’d get to do.

“Honestly I never thought I’d ever get to work in the space career field,” said Callan. “Growing up it seemed like it was for rocket scientists. It’s been amazing to see my crew members learn and gain confidence in what they do and I love helping them and working alongside them on task.”

Self-described as “wearing her heart on her sleeve,” Callan says the best part of her job is the people she works with.

“It’s really about the people for me and it always has been,” said Callan. “It’s awesome getting to really be innovative and work hard toward some difficult problem sets that we are all trying to solve together as a team.”

The teamwork ethic that Callan brings to the fight is one of the characteristics that has been noticed by her leadership.

“Lieutenant Callan is an officer with impeccable character and drive to improve the mission and people around her,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Angelo Fernandez, 16th SPCS commander. “She has an uncanny ability to seek out areas for improvement and find solutions to make it better.”

According to Fernandez, Callan performs at the same level regardless of her work environment.

“Lieutenant Callan has done this while in garrison, and deployed and with her work as a space liaison officer on float with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit traversing the South China Sea,” said Fernandez. “Her relentless work ethic and competency solidified a sustainable support for some of our key mission partners in the Indo-Pacific region.”

Outside of the office, Callan says she enjoys working out, taking spin class, hiking and snowboarding, and is ready to try anything that challenges her.

This mentality worked out perfect when she was selected to deploy as a space liaison officer aboard the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Float 21.1, in the USINDOPACOM Theater.

“My time getting to support the 31st MEU is something that I will never forget,” said Callan. “It was kind of like paying it forward since my Dad got to work with the Marines and I’m glad I volunteered for it. It really opened my eyes up to what our sister services do and I am truly humbled by their daily sacrifices.”

Callan also stated, “I hope I can get the opportunity again to do something like this because it is something I will never forget.”

Callan will be carrying her space knowledge and work ethic to her next assignment at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, where she will continue to educate and learn from those around her.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2nd Space Operations Squadron, part of Space Delta 8 headquartered at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, operationally accepted GPS III Space Vehicle 05, the newest satellite in its modernized Global Positioning System constellation June 29, 2021.

The satellite enables enhanced worldwide Military Code (M-code) coverage.

Operational acceptance occurs when the satellite is handed from the acquisition community, which purchased the satellite and contracted for its launch, to the operational squadron to execute global operations.

The 2nd SOPS performs the command and control mission for the GPS constellation for both military and civil users.

The satellite is part of the U.S. Space Force’s modernization priorities.

“The capabilities this satellite provides are exactly what we need to protect the interests of the United States in, from, and to space, and to enable Joint terrestrial and space operations,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, Space Operations Command commander. “We must continue to modernize our existing space architectures with new technologies to provide our warfighters with uninterrupted access to the information they need, when they need it.”

“We are very excited because this new block III satellite completes our worldwide (military-code) coverage,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Michael Schriever, 2nd SOPS commander.

“Now we will be able to broadcast the military signal globally in accordance with interface compliance requirements which our team, along with our 19 SOPS counterparts, have been working around the clock to achieve.”

GPS III Space Vehicle 05 is the latest next-generation GPS satellite. It is the 24th M-Code signal-enabled GPS space vehicle on orbit, completing the constellation’s baseline requirement to provide military forces a more-secure, harder-to-jam and spoof GPS signal. GPS III satellites provide significant capability advancements over earlier-designed GPS satellites on orbit, including three times better accuracy; up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities; and a new L1C civil signal, which is compatible with international global navigation satellite systems, to improve civilian user connectivity.

The Lockheed Martin-built satellite, named “Neil Armstrong” after the famous American astronaut, launched June 17, 2021, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The satellite separated from its SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket about 90 minutes into its flight, and then spent the next several days using an onboard rocket to reach its final orbit approximately 12,500 miles above Earth.

Globally, more than four billion military, civil and commercial users depend on GPS’s positioning, navigation and timing signals for aviation, telecommunication, banking, farming and more.

They did this using commercial antennas around the globe in order to download Space Defense data directly from spacecraft. What this amounts to is more resilient communications infrastructure from which Airmen and Guardians can effectively carry out their mission.

Over 800 tests were completed on the Operationally Responsive Space-5, alone, a single-spacecraft constellation with the primary mission of providing space domain awareness.

Another highlight for 1st SOPS took place when U.S. Space Force Capt. Clare O’Reilly, 1st SOPS mission commander, participated in the first USSF Core Values conference. “Guardians from all over the world brainstormed our guiding values, and within 1st SOPS, [we] worked with almost all of our members to bring to life exactly what ‘orbital warfare operations’ look like in practice,” said O’Reilly.

“In this squadron, leadership is not something that solely depends on your rank or your duty title. We empower all Airmen and Guardians with this, to allow them to bring ideas forward and actually have ownership in all aspects of our mission,” said 1st SOPS Senior Enlisted Leader, U.S. Space Force Senior Master Sgt. Richard Justice.

It was precisely because of this mentality that 1st SOPS was able to accomplish the kind of work that ultimately led to AFA’s decision to recognize the unit with the honor.

What exactly does “orbital warfare operations” look like in practice? As part of DEL 9, combat mission crews conduct 24-hour operations to deter, defend and defeat adversary threats in space.

Combat crews, orbital analysts and combat engineers are responsible for planning and executing operations of spacecraft in low-earth and geosynchronous orbits all in the name of protecting and defending U.S. and allied interests in space.

For 1st SOPS, the future of their mission is ever advancing. “It is a privilege to be a part of the Orbital Warfare spacepower discipline; from major training overhauls, to force structure realignments, and innovative teams, the mission area continues to evolve to dominate fielded and future threats,” said U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. Cory Takaki, 1st SOPS flight chief.

mander, is incredibly grateful for the hard work 1st SOPS members like Takaki, Marin, O’Reilly, Flesch and Justice put forth, ultimately leading to the citation.

“The Space Force’s inaugural capstone doctrine challenges us to pursue new and bold ideas, take prudent risks and learn from failure,” said Bell. “Our command team gets to witness this as the women and men of 1st SOPS take daily ownership of this charge – we are extremely proud of the team and grateful that others recognize their dedication to enhancing military spacepower and securing our nation’s interests on-orbit.”

Bell is set to receive the award on behalf of his squadron sometime before the end of the year.
