P-S GAR introduces on-base housing resident advocates

By Senior Airman Alexus Wilcox | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In a sweeping response to the military housing health concerns raised by on-base housing residents across the U.S. Air Force in 2018, the Department of Defense enacted the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act in conjunction with the Tenant Bill of Rights.

The bill ensures safe and healthy facilities for residents of military privatized housing and provides additional resources for complaint resolution.

The NDAA requires that every military installation with privatized housing create a resident advocate position to work on behalf of their residents.

“My direct role in the resident advocate process is to be the liaison between privatized housing residents, the military housing office, the privatized housing project owner and the installation commander,” said Christopher Russell, Schriever Air Force Base privatized housing RA. RAs have the responsibility to advocate for resident rights, safe and healthy housing, as well as identifying, validating and assisting in the resolution of resident concerns.

Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, recently welcomed Kyra Mailki, the new RA for the installation.

“I hope that I can help residents feel comfortable and confident with their decision to live on base,” said Mailki. “I intend to accomplish this by working to keep residents informed; supporting their needs

through education, mediation and advocacy; and ensuring that they have a voice when it comes to housing issues that impact their neighborhoods.”

Unlike traditional privatize housing companies, the Peterson-Schriever Garrison RAs support needs specific to their respective installations. Their ability to communicate directly with the installation commander allows them greater flexibility to assist residents.

“My position supports all privatized housing residents on the installation, without regard for rank, branch of service, duty location or family composition,” said Mailki. “Upon request, I can also provide support, in the form of information and/or referrals, for inbound (future) residents, previous residents and other military members living in the local Colorado Springs area.”

Mailki and Russell’s goals are to strengthen the relationship between residents and privatized housing owners, provide leaders with insight into housing issues on their installations and to accurately report issues in order to facilitate long-term improvements and policy change where necessary.

“It is crucial that we support our residents and their families so that they are able to execute their day-to-day missions to the best of their abilities without unnecessary stressors at home,” said Russell.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — High Frontier Honor Guard fulfills a key role in the quality of life for active duty, retiree and veteran families by providing the final tribute for deceased service members on behalf of the president of the United States, and both U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force.

The High Frontier Honor Guard supports a vast area including 41 counties in Colorado and eight in western Kansas. The area of responsibility extends from the Utah border to Colby, Kansas and from the New Mexico border to Longmont, Colorado. This area contains two national cemeteries and an area of approximately 93,000 square miles.

The team is composed of service members from three Colorado installations: Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Peterson Air Force Base and Schriever AFB. The Honor Guard is looking for highly motivated and sharp Airmen and Guardians to help support their mission. All incoming members are tasked to complete 80 hours of basic protocol during the Honors and Ceremonies Course. The course tests prospective guardsmen in military bearing and overall endurance. It also provides detailed instruction on performing a guardsman’s ceremonial duties.

Summer safety tips for Airmen, Guardians and families By 21st Security Forces Squadron PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Summer is here. Parents are putting up their children’s jackets and gloves and taking down their skateboards and bikes. But before you do, ensure you are doing so in the most safest and legal way possible. There are rules and regulations we must adhere by and for a reason. The most important reason is to ensure our kids safety. Here are some helpful safety rules and tips to ensure a safe, happy, and memorable summer:

HUMAN POWERED TRANSPORTATION DEVICES • O perators of, but not limited, to bicycles (including motorized), tricycles and any other human powered vehicles must: • Wear properly fastened and approved (ANSI, Snell, etc.) bicycle helmet.

• Retro-reflective vest/jacket or outer garment containing retro-reflective material during hours of darkness.

• A ll bicycles will be equipped with a white front light (not a reflector) visible for 500 ft and red rear reflector or light clearly visible from a distance of 300 ft.

• Observe the rules of the road and common courtesies.

NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORTATION DEVICES • O perators of but not limited to skateboards, kick-scooters, roller blades, roller skates must: • Utilize designated pedestrian walkways and paths.

• Not utilize installation roadways except for incidental road access associated with all pedestrian related traffic laws.

• Wear properly fastened and approved (ANSI, Snell, etc.) bicycle helmet.

• Wear knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, etc. IAW local installation safety policy.

• Observe the rules of the road and common courtesies.

LISTENING DEVICES Wearing portable headphones, earphones, cellular phones, iPods, or other listening and entertainment devices (other than hearing aids) while walking, jogging, running, bicycling, skating, or skateboarding on roadways or requires the crossing of any street is prohibited to all persons.

CURFEW and LOITERING In accordance with Colorado Springs 9.2.102, Loitering, it is unlawful for any person under the age of 18 years of age to loiter or to aimlessly drive or ride about, on or about any street, avenue, highway, road, sidewalk, curb, gutter, parking lot, alley, vacant lot, park, playground, yard, building, place of amusement, or eating place, whether public or private, without the consent or permission of the owner or occupant thereof, during the hours ending at 6 a.m. and beginning at 12 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and beginning at 10 p.m. on Sunday night through Thursday night.

work in his first eight years in the Air Force, earning himself a Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medal in 2018.

Since arriving at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, in November 2019, New has organized a variety of charitable efforts, despite the COVID-19 lockdown conditions over the past year. On two occasions, he arranged for around 20 volunteers to help a local food pantry organize and process its donations and supplies, replace old shelving, and prepare grab bags for families. Looking forward, New hopes to work with Read Across America and link up with local schools to volunteer as a mentor, opening the door for other service members to give back as well.

“I think people want to be inherently good, and they’re al-

ways looking for ways to give back to the community,” said New. “Everybody wants to help, they just don’t always know how to.”

New comes from Portage, Pennsylvania, a town he described as small and economically disadvantaged; it had only two stop lights during his upbringing there, and he recalls the construction of the first McDonald’s in town as a major event.

Volunteers and mentors who came into his school gave him role models and showed New and his classmates that they could strive for more than they had.

Later, New moved to St. Cloud, Florida, where he attended high school, and he enlisted in the Air Force after graduation. He pinned on master sergeant July 1, 2021, and intends to commission as an officer in either the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force.

“I couldn’t really do anything without the support of the local community,” New said. “I’ve been in [the Air Force for] almost 11 years now, and we really have to look [at] who’s coming in and what we’re going to hand them…make sure we’re taking care of the local community as they’re taking care of us.”
