As a reminder, no firearms or ammunition may be present in any temporary living quarter or dormitory.

Postage from Hawaii to Greenland

By Staff Sgt. Alexandra M. Longfellow | 21ST SPACE WING THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Houses are built right on the sand. Canoes and outriggers divide the yards. The sun rises between the islands as neighbors gather to watch the day begin with steaming cups of coffee in their hands. The ocean breeze flows through open screen doors as it finds its way down the narrow beach paths. Sand gently spills over the beach, mixing with the grass.

Airman 1st Class JR B. Henry, 821st Support Squadron postal apprentice, was born and raised in Maui, Hawaii, the 49th state admitted to the U.S. and the only island state in the Pacific Ocean. He is now stationed at Thule Air Base, Greenland, the U.S. Department of Defense’s northernmost installation located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

The climate between the two islands is vastly different, as is the have a significant difference in square mileage also. Greenland is 836,000 square miles with Thule covering only 254 of those. Hawaii has a total land area of 6,423 square miles with Maui taking up 728.

Island fever has never been farther from the truth than when Henry explains the similarities he observes in these two very different islands.

“Both islands are beautiful,” Henry said. “Everyone knows each other, cars are manual and both islands have some kind of shark in their waters.”

Those aren’t the only similarities Henry identifies between Maui and Thule.

“Patient is a common adjective often used to describe people of Hawaii,” Henry said. “We really like to take our time because we want to take in all the views, sounds

and scents the island gives us. Another reason is the postal service.”

Mail may take between three to five weeks to deliver to Hawaii, Henry added.

“It is very similar to how mail is received here at Thule AB, where I work as a postal apprentice,” Henry said. “As mail is received on a weekly basis, it is crucial for me to ensure everyone gets their packages.”

Living in Greenland for a year without family and friends is new and can be challenging for those who are not used to being in an isolated location, Henry explained.

Thule AB is comprised of military members, civilians and contractors, with a small base exchange and dining facility.

“Every time we greet our satisfied customers in the post office, it makes us realize how a simple package can change someone’s day for the better,” Henry said.

Education, caring and helping others are very important values for his family, Henry added.

“My grandparents’ motto is, ‘learn a lot and have fun,’” Henry said. “They also taught me to respect everyone and ourselves no matter what.”

Henry explains the skills he has learned from the Air Force are very similar to the values of his Polynesian heritage.

“The Air Force core values are a part of my everyday life,” Henry said. “And these skills are what make me ‘Built To Last.’”

Henry describes himself as a mostly quiet person, but in May, during an Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month event, he chose to leave his comfort zone

and taught the Hula dance to others at Thule.

“I found my strength and confidence by doing the things I love to do and trying new things,” Henry said.

Henry wants to advise other Airmen to explore new, and sometimes intimidating, duty locations.

“There are a lot of things you can do on a one-year tour here in Greenland,” Henry said. “You will feel miserable if you stay in your dorm. Go on a hike, take an all-terrain vehicle ride, ice skate or sled. Everyone will be your family by the end of your short tour.”

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The U.S. Space Force Commercial Satellite Communications Office recently announced the development of its Infrastructure Asset Pre-Assessment Program.

The objective of the IA-PRE Program is to advance the security posture of current and future commercial satellite communications procurements for the Department of Defense. As the sole authority for procurement of COMSATCOM services for all of the DoD, the USSF must ensure the most secure space systems are available to support the U.S., its allies, and the joint warfighters.

“Cybersecurity is critical to the DoD and its missions,” said Jared Reece, COMSATCOM IA Policy and Compliance Lead, CSCO. “Today, the commercial satellite industry spends countless dollars on cybersecurity to ensure their assets and customers are protected from malicious actors. IA-PRE will help ensure appropriate cybersecurity solutions

are achieved for our customers.”

Among the goals of the IA-PRE Program is to develop an “approved product list” of COMSATCOM assets with cybersecurity posture scores based on standard U.S. government requirements and to enhance commercial asset security posture, reducing administrative burdens to both U.S. government and industry partners.

The USSF CSCO, in collaboration with the USSF Risk Management Office (Authorizing Official), is soliciting support from the commercial satellite industry to develop a program that works closely with commercial partners to serve their missions and meets DoD goals.

Final submissions of feedback from the commercial satellite industry are due to CSCO by July 2. CSCO officials will review the feedback and provide updates and begin to finalize the IAPRE program in August.

The firearm will not be left unattended at any time, and must be under the supervision of an adult, 18 years of age or older, who is not otherwise prohibited from possess-

ing a firearm. In the event the vehicle transporting the weapon does not have a trunk, e.g., Jeep, truck, etc, the weapon must be unloaded, out of arm’s reach, and within a locked container or secured with a keyactivated trigger lock. Finally, the transport of firearms on a bicycle, motorcycle, or any other two or three-wheeled vehicle is prohibited.

USSF field command structure reduces command layers

(AFNS) — The Department of the Air Force and the United States Space Force have finalized the new service’s organizational structure for echelons below the headquarters, reflecting the newest branch of the armed forces’ guiding principles of being a lean, agile and missionfocused organization.

The USSF field organization will consist of three echelons of command, where the Air Force currently is organized into five echelons. USSF’s organizational structure will initially consolidate and align all organize, train and equip mission execution from former Air Force spacerelated units.

“This is the most significant restructuring of space units undertaken by the United States since the establishment of Air Force Space Command in 1982,” said Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett. “Innovation and efficiency are driving our mission as we position the Space Force to respond with agility to protect our nation’s space capabilities and the American way of life.”

In order of hierarchy, the USSF field echelons are named field commands, deltas and squadrons. There will be three field commands aligned with specific mission focuses: Space Operations Command, Space Systems Command, and Space Training and Readiness Command. SpOC and SSC will be led by three-star general officers, and STARCOM will be led by a two-star general.

Deltas will be O-6 led and will be organized around a specific function – operations, installation support, training, etc. Within the deltas will be squadrons focused on specific tactics. When the field command structure is fully implemented, it will eliminate one general officer echelon and one O-6 echelon of command. Functions formerly performed at the eliminated echelons will be realigned where appropriate within the USSF. “This is an historic opportunity to launch the Space Force on the right trajectory to deliver the capabilities needed to ensure freedom of movement and deter aggression in, from and to space,” said Gen. Jay Raymond, USSF chief of space operations. “How we organize the Space Force will have a lasting impact on our ability to respond with speed and agility to emerging threats in support of the National Defense Strategy and Space Strategy.”

SpOC will be the primary force

provider of space forces and capabilities for combatant commanders, coalition partners, the joint force and the nation. The staff and operations elements of USSF at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, which is also the former AFSPC, will become the headquarters SpOC. There is an existing unit at Vandenberg AFB, California, named Space Operations Command, which will be renamed upon activation of the field command SpOC.

Negatively pressurized conexes ready to save lives

By Air Mobility Command SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFNS) — On June 24, the first Negatively Pressurized Conex ready for operational use touched down at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, with 16 experts from Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina and three members of the program office team to stand on alert status and train additional Airmen on the NPC. The NPC is configured for the C-17 Globemaster III and C-5 Super Galaxy aircraft to safely transport up to 28 passengers or 23 patients, including ambulatory and litter, around the globe, while the Negatively Pressurized Conex-Lite is a smaller variation configured to be used aboard the C-130 Hercules.

The NPC-L system was certified to be fully operational June 25.

Air Mobility Command and Air Force Materiel Command leaders joined forces early April to invite creative materiel and non-materiel solutions to address a joint urgent operational need to move large numbers of COVID-19 patients should the need for that capability arise.

"In less than 30 days, the NPC went from an idea on a napkin to a proven concept ... and only 88 days from that idea to the delivery of an operational system," said Lt. Col. Paul Hendrickson, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center

Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense material leader. "This was made possible by a team comprised of the Air Force CBRN Defense Systems Branch working with the Joint Program Executive Office for CBRN Defense and partnering with teams across the Air Force and Department of Defense."

After putting the proof of concept NPC system through rigorous testing that ran from April 21-30; the first NPC-L was delivered June 1, at JB Charleston, followed by the first NPC on June 7, to begin testing and operational utility evaluation.

“Teams from across the country led by the Program Executive Office for Agile Combat Support, gathered at Joint Base Charleston to assess the NPC and ensure it met four main requirements,” Hendrickson said. “The NPC must one, be able to contain the virus from aircrew and the aircraft; two, be usable for aeromedical teams; three, have the potential to be certified airworthy; and four, have the potential to be safe to fly. The NPC has proven capable of satisfying all of those requirements.”

To date, the TIS has successfully transported more than 80 patients. However, it offers AMC and the Air Force limited capability, as each TIS can transport only two to four patients. The NPC will increase AMC’s capacity for patient transport, both now and in support of future requirements.

“The NPC is crucial to readiness as it not only protects our aircrews, aircraft and aeromedical evacuation teams as they transport patients, but it also protects the readiness of the locations we will move patients from,” said Lt. Col. Timothy Mach, AMC Requirements Division chief. “We need to take care of the individual infected by the virus and mitigate the chance of it spreading.

The NPC allows us to perform those lifesaving movements in only hours.”

Parents: Where are your children?

To ensure Colorado laws are being complied with, Peterson Air Force Base has developed the requirements and minimum ages for children to be left unattended. It's important to remember, however, that parents and guardians must consider the physical, emotional and psychological maturity of their children. Some children, because of a disability or psychological problem should not be given the same degree of self-management.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — One of my favorite aspects of this time of year is being able to enjoy being outside. The weather is getting warm, we all start seeing the neighborhood kids in their yards, or out riding their bikes, and throwing the football in the yard, etc. Unfortunately, we also sometimes see young children wandering around the streets alone, or left unattended in vehicles.

To ensure Colorado laws are being complied with, Peterson Air Force Base has developed the requirements and minimum ages for children to be left unattended.

It's important to remember, however, that parents and guardians must consider the physical, emotional and psychological maturity of their children. Some children, because of a disability or psychological problem should not be given the same degree of self-management.

Guidelines of requirements and minimum ages: •• Children ages five and up may be in the yard of residence with adult supervisor having visual sight and/or being within hearing distance.

•• Ages six and up may walk to and from school without adult supervision.

•• Ages seven and up may be unattended outside as

long as they have access to adult assistance.

•• No child under 10 may be left unattended in a car.

For those children 10 and up, the keys need to be removed and the emergency brake should be engaged.

•• Ages 10 may be left without adult supervision in their quarters for up to two hours as long as they have ready access to an adult via telephone. Ages 11 may exceed two hours with ready telephone access to an adult.

•• Ages 12-14 may be left alone without a sitter more than two hours only during the daytime hours and before curfew.

•• Ages 16 and up may be left alone overnight up to five consecutive days; however, there must be some type of adult supervision available to make periodic checks.

•• Youth must be 12 years old (or a 6th grader) and be babysitter trained by the Red Cross, or equivalent, in order to babysit their sibling. An 11 year old may babysit their sibling for a maximum of two hours provided they meet the above training requirements.

When violations are reported to the Peterson AFB base defense operations center, security forces quickly

react and initiate a child abuse or neglect response.

Military offenders are subject to administrative, judicial and non-judicial punishment as deemed appropriate by their commander. Civilian offenders may be subject to prosecution by local authorities.

Don't forget we have a curfew for those old enough to be left without supervision.

In accordance with Colorado Springs ordinance 9.2.102: Loitering, it is unlawful for any person under the age of 18 years of age to loiter or to aimlessly drive or ride about on any street, parking lot, park or eating place, whether public or private, without the consent or permission of the owner. Curfews are is in place Friday and Saturday nights from midnight until 6 a.m., and Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.
